1 DSB WEEKLY NO. 701 September 26, 2005 Dr. Christopher Squier Attends 50 th Year Jubileum At Semmelweis University, Budapest, Hungary Dr. Christopher Squier, associate dean for research and graduate studies, has been incited to attend the 50 th year Jubileum at Semmelweis University in Budapest, Hungary. It is a 50 th year celebration of the dental department at Semmelweis University. The celebration is being held September In 2001, Dr. Squier received an honorary doctorate from the Senate of Semmelweis University. Dr. Squier has collaborated over the past decade with a number of faculty members from their dental school on tobacco research associated with oral lesions and tobacco control in Hungary. Jamie Sharp Adopts a Greyhound: The Sequel Therefore to this dog will I, Tenderly not scornfully, Render praise and favor. (Elizabeth Barrett Browning, To Flush, My Dog [1844] Jamie Sharp, one of the College of Dentistry s newest retirees, is also a new dog owner. In August she adopted, Dash (racing name: Hyland Platte), a red brindle greyhound, from the Quad City Greyhound Adoption organization. Although Jamie and Dash were both nervous when they first met, they have since become well acquainted with each other. Jamie describes her new dog s personality as happy and outgoing, attentive and perky. Dash seldom barks and when she does, it s because she s happy. (Cont. on page 2) Oakdale Plaza Invites You to Their Grand Opening, September 29th, 3:00-7:00 p.m. See Their Invitation on Page 3 (online only) 1 The College of Dentistry Welcomes Dr. Karen Wolf The Department of Periodontics welcomes Dr. Karen Wolf as an adjunct assistant professor. She will be working with the D3 students on Tuesday mornings. Dr. Wolf may be a familiar face to collegiate faculty and staff. She was a dental hygienist in Periodontics during the early 1990s. She then received her DDS from Iowa in 1998 and certificate in periodontics in After graduation, Dr. Wolf joined the Valley Periodontics practice in Appleton, Wisconsin. She has recently moved back to our area and is now an associate with Dr. John Morgan in Cedar Rapids. Please make Karen welcome and come visit her. The College of Dentistry Welcomes Dr. Michael Spector Dr. Michael Spector will be joining Family Dentistry September 19, 2005, as a clinical assistant professor. Dr. Spector graduated from Temple University School of Dentistry in 1999 with a DMD. He also got his M.S. and specialty certificate in periodontics in 2002 and his certificate in the AEGD program in 2003 from Columbia University School of Dental and Oral Surgery. For the past two years he has worked as a general dentist, most recently at Hoffman Estates in Illinois. Please welcome Dr. Spector to the College of Dentistry. UI Wellness Offers Health Recipe Resources This month, UI Wellness offers some excellent health recipe resources, including information from the National Cancer Institute, Web MD, and Shape Magazine. Look for recipes that include fruits and veggies, chile peppers, figs and other good foods. To learn more, go to Iowa vs. Northwestern Tickets/Bus Trip Available For Hawkeyes Who Want to Attend Nov. 5 th Game The Department of Family Dentistry still has five tickets remaining for their bus trip to the Iowa vs. Northwestern football game on Saturday, November 5, The cost of this trip will be $85 per person, which includes a ticket to the game and the bus trip. The bus will leave from the DSB parking lot. If you are interested in joining the fun, call Jean or Cheryl at ASAP. Go Hawks!
2 Cont. from page 1 Jamie Sharp Adopts a Greyhound For Dash, becoming acclimated to her new life with Jamie is an ongoing process. Although she had never lived in a house before, she is adjusting nicely. Because she had never eaten from a person s hand, Jamie taught Dash to take a treat. Dash also learned other rules of the house, such as picking up her crumbs after eating and staying off the furniture. She did, however, claim Jamie s bed for her own, at least until Jamie let her know she must share. (Jamie reports that Dash is now very good about staying on the other side of the bed. Her dog sleeps crosswise and sometimes in a spread eagle position!) Dash has good oral health, with only a little recession on one molar. Greyhounds have notoriously bad teeth/gingiva from their track diets and lack of oral care. Dash s teeth were cleaned by a vet before the adoption; now Jamie brushes her dog s teeth twice weekly. During their walks, Dash has become acquainted with other dogs and children in the neighborhood. Walking her dog has been challenging, says Jamie, because Dash becomes focused on looking for critters and is very good at spotting them because of her peripheral vision. In the back yard, she has successfully chased down two squirrels (one gave her nose a battle scar) and one bird (which no doubt is still recovering from the tachycardia-inducing event). It is customary for greyhounds to have ear tattoos and Dash is no exception. Her left ear s tattoo records her litter number, which is registered with the National Greyhound Association. Her right ear s tattoo includes her birth date and birth order. Jamie has done a bit of research about Dash s lineage. At she discovered that Dash s mother and father have produced 478 offspring. Her dog s paternal grandfather, Molotov, produced 7,024 offspring, and her maternal grandfather, who was worth $58,000, produced 3,170 offspring. Devoted greyhound adopters share a universal concern for the disposable nature of the greyhound racing industry. Over 10,000 cousins and siblings are too many, even for Dash! No racing information about Dash has yet been discovered, although Jamie s dog does have a racing scar on her side. Traditionally, greyhounds begin training for races when they are one year old. At 18 months, they will go to the minors and if they win/place/show, they will be sent to the majors. Jamie has discovered that Dash s mother ran in 89 races and won 8. The prevailing thought about Dash is that she didn t make it out of the minors. Greyhounds often have very unusual and unique names: ML Sonic Boom, Johnny Cascade, DK s Prime Time, or Amelia s Boogie. Jamie has discovered that there are at least 12 other greyhounds with the names of Dash or Dasher. As this sequel goes to press, Jamie and Dash continue to become better acquainted and Dash is learning to deal with separation anxiety issues when Jamie is away. To become better acquainted with Jamie s new pet yourselves, go to page 4-6 of this issue (online only) to see photos of Jamie and Dash!
