2 Shetland Sheepdog Club of Northern California Minutes of the General Meeting April 30, 2016 Location: Round Table Pizza in Fremont The meeting was called to order by President Yvonne Samuelson at 1:00 pm. President s Report: Yvonne said that the Board should be a working Board, i.e., everyone on the Board should also be doing a job for the Club in addition to serving on the Board. Right now, everyone (or nearly everyone) on the Board is a working member. This practice should continue. Correspondence: Trudy Kerr reported that we received the following correspondence from the AKC: A notice that the results of our March 2016 agility trial have been processed. An inquiry about Hot August Nights Agility (a multiday agility trial which takes place at Terry LeClair s property in Shingle Springs in August). SSCNC sponsors one of the nights. Patsi Nelson was contacted and the issue was straightened out. Treasurer: Kathy Rosdail said that we had a lot of expenses in February due to the Specialty. We made a donation to Eve Saks (Sheltie Rescue Alternative). We made a nice profit on the March agility trial. Membership dues are due now. A lot of members haven t paid their dues yet. Kathy passed out a sheet showing the status of dues payments for each member.

3 Dues increase by $1 if they are not paid by May 1 st. Kathy asked if the Club should keep this arrangement. The members in attendance agreed that no changes should be made. In order to be run for a spot on the Board or to be nominated from the floor, you must pay your dues (in addition, you must be a member in good standing and not owe any money to the Club). Mark Hersman, Ann Baillet and the Rozenoffs need to contact Kathy R. regarding the awards at the February Specialty. Membership: Cathy Dupree has changed her address. Her new address is: Cathy Dupree 1724 Dalia Lane Manteca, CA Please add her new address to your records. Anita Rasmussen will issue an updated roster in June. In order to appear on the new Roster, you need to pay your dues by June 1 st. Anita has a list of members in good standing (34 total). Breeders Referral: No report. Agility Trial: Patsi reported that the next SSCNC Agility Trial is July 2 3. Currently, it is scheduled to take space at Cabernet Indoor Sports in Livermore. However, Lorie Abbott (show secretary) is looking for a different location because Cabernet is very expensive, which makes it difficult for agility trials held there to make money. If a substitute location cannot be found, we will stay at Cabernet. Ways and Means: Yvonne said that we need a volunteer for Ways and Means. Ways and Means organizes prizes for Raffles and for meetings. Dianne Boross expressed an interest. [Note: Per the January 23, 2016 meeting minutes, Anita, Kathy Coon, Lynn Azzopardi, and Tom True had previously volunteered to be on the committee.] Education: Yvonne volunteered to join Johanna Primeaux on the education committee. It would be nice if we had a performance member on the committee as well. Special Awards: Anita would like to sponsor 3 new awards: Most Grand Champion points on a single dog/bitch Top 20 (could be multiple winners) Century Club (could be multiple winners). Johanna suggested putting the names of past Century Club winners on the award. Everyone should think about new awards for special awards. The more the merrier. Also, awards have disappeared and need to be replaced. This is especially true of the performance awards. Lynn will make a list of the missing awards. Lynn if you have an idea for a special award. Awards are for members of good standing. If you are not a member of good standing and you are eligible for an award, you can purchase your award.

4 October 2016 Specialty: The Specialty takes place on October 22 nd. Nancy Rynewicz and Sharon Sampson are co-chairs. Nancy said that, now that the National is over, she and Sharon will be getting together to work on the Specialty. The judges have been fixed on the AKC Event calendar. Marianne Dub will be the Obedience Chair Rebecca Logsdon may be the Rally Chair (depending on her schedule). We will need a new ring steward for Conformation because Kristal Brown is moving. The members discussed the travel plans and accommodations for the judges. Oakland is the preferred airport. There are members who can pick up the judges from there (San Jose is more difficult). The preferred hotel is the Courtyard Marriott in Pleasanton. We will also need to arrange transport to and from the hotel and to the airport. Nancy and Sharon will discuss. The lunch will be for judges and stewards only. We still have time to add Juniors to the October Specialty. Our judge, Joanne Pavey, doesn t do Juniors. Maybe we could ask Janet Hitt? February 2017 Specialty: The February Specialty takes place Friday, February 17 th. Kathy R. and Anita will be co-chairs. Kathy R. said that we will be in Expo Hall. The Obedience and Conformation rings will both be in that Hall. We don t have a layout yet. We will need to get extra matting for the rings. Kathy R. notified Santa Clara Valley KC that Amy Gau is available to judge other breeds and juniors. October 2017 Specialty: Trudy said that the Sweeps judge will be Renee Guillierie Yvonne suggested having Specialties on both Saturday and Sunday in October Kathy C. said that people are so wiped out after the end of the Saturday Specialty that having another Specialty on Sunday is just too much. Plus, entries drop on Sunday because people are tired or got their titles already. Also, Saturday is such a long day, with the Rescue Raffle and Parade, the meeting and judges voting following the show. See New Business below regarding changes to the Judges Committee schedule. Puppy Picnic: The Puppy Picnic takes place June 18 th at Niles Community Park in Fremont. The Picnic will start at 10:30 am. The meeting will start at 11:30 am, following by lunch. We won t be renting the park. We just need to make sure we show up early enough to get a good spot. It will be an informal gathering. It will be an opportunity to practice with our puppies. It could include older dogs too. Johanna suggested round robin judging. That way, everyone has a chance to go over the dogs. Kathy R. suggested signing up if you want your puppies to be judged. Otherwise, you can just play or just have a few, selected people go over your puppy. Yvonne asked if anyone has a barbeque. We used to do barbeques at our picnics. Johanna started a list for the potluck at the Puppy Picnic. It will be bring your own drinks.

5 Match: The Match takes place August 13 th at Niles Community Park in Fremont. We need someone to chair the Obedience/Rally workshop. We don t make money if we don t have Obedience/Rally. Patsi volunteered to chair the workshop. Tom True will bring the equipment. As a judge, Trudy suggested Ann (Portuguese Water Dogs). We will also do Juniors. We have at least 2 members who are sponsoring Juniors. Whoever judges conformation at the Match will also need to judge Juniors. After some discussion the members came up with a list of conformation judges to consider, including Stuart McGraw (Borzois), Jennifer McFarlin (going for her judgeship), Kathleen McKnight, Dale Root (Goldens Pam Strametz significant other), Cindy Robinson, Cindy Frusetta, Jan Martin, Lisa Tatsuno, Mark Hersman. The membership voted for 4 the person with the most votes gets conformation, the person with the second most votes gets sweeps. The members present voted as follows: #1 Cindy Frusetta #2 Mark Hersman #3 Dale Root #4 Kathleen McKnight Johanna volunteered to handle the potluck. Please Johanna to let her know what you want to bring. She will then be able to tell you if someone else is bringing the same thing. Nominating Committee: The Nominating Committee submitted the following nominations for the SSCNC Board for : President Vice President Treasurer Corresponding Secretary Recording Secretary Sergeant at Arms Director Director Director Director Johanna Primeaux Halina Christie Kathy Rosdail Trudy Kerr Rebecca Logsdon Tom True Mark Hersman Kathleen McKnight Anita Rasmussen Patsi Nelson Yvonne noted that, per the Bylaws, the President should be a member of all committees but she was not part of this committee s discussions. Nominations from the floor can be made during the May meeting. Any member in good standing can nominate someone from the floor. If the person being nominated is not in attendance, the nominator must present a written statement of acceptance from the nominee. If you are a member in good standing, you can nominate yourself. Per the Bylaws, the immediate Past President is automatically on the Board, if he/she wants it. If the Past President wants to continue on the Board, he/she becomes one of the 4 Board of Directors (in this situation, the top 3 vote-getters for Board of Directors will get on the Board, instead of the top 4). There was a discussion amongst the members regarding the Bylaws provisions and its affect on voting and on the Board.

6 We may have extra people running for office this year, for the first time in a long time. This is a good thing the slate presented by the Nominating Committee isn t meant to be automatic. Plus it shows a lot of interest in the Club. If you would like to be on the Board, consider running. There may be someone on the Board who would appreciate a break. Trudy said that the ballots are always mailed to all the members. Only the ballots from members in good standing are counted. New Business: Voting for Judges: To make the meeting after the end of the October Specialty shorter, Yvonne suggested that the Judges Committees meet in June and present the slate of judges for voting in August, instead of October. Kathy R. made a motion: Judges Committees for conformation/sweeps and for obedience/rally will choose slates in June and the membership will vote on those slates in August. The motion was seconded and approved by the membership. Rebecca can publish the judges and their bios in the July Bulletin, so everyone can get an idea who the judges are prior to voting. We can always revote for judges in October if there is a problem. Yvonne said that if we get our judges in early, we will have a better chance of sharing judges with Del Valle and/or Santa Clara. This, in turn, will reduce the cost of our Specialty. Anita, Halina, Johanna and Kathleen McKnight volunteered to be on the conformation/sweeps Judges Committee. Marianne and Nancy volunteered to be on the obedience/rally Judges Committee (we need two more people on this committee). ASSA: Kathy R. attended the ASSA meeting at the National: o The ASSA is trying to get the 2014 and 2015 handbooks out this year. You do not have to be an ASSA member to be in the handbook. Everyone can post in the handbook. There is an ad for the 2014 Handbook in the catalog for the National. You can also download the forms off of the ASSA website. o Kathy R. learned that not all ASSA-affiliated Clubs have conformation/performance/pet sheltie enthusiasts in the same Club. SSCNC, Sac Valley and Northern Nevada are unusual. Woofstock: Anita said that, according to the Woofstock premium list, we are providing crate pads to Best of Breed, Winners Dog and Winner Bitch all 4 days (so 12 pads total). The members agreed that they still want to do this. A motion that Anita order crate pads for Woofstock was seconded and approved. Anita will order the pads from Pet Edge (bright colors). Topics for Future Discussion: Kathy C. suggested discussing puppy prices and stud prices at a future meeting. Good of the Order: Kathy R. thanked Yvonne for judging at the National. Overall, the event turned out well. Kathy chaired the herding trial at the National and they had a very big entry. Thank you also to the SSCNC members who were on the host committee for the National, including Diane LaClare, Pat Mahoney and Bonny Silva. Education Quiz: Johanna ran a quiz at the end of the meeting. The prize was a Round Table gift card. Kathy C. won the quiz.

9 THE 2016 NOR CAL SHELTIE PICNIC DATE; JUNE 18th, 2016 PLACE: NILES COMMUNITY PARK (FREMONT, CALIF.) TIME 10:30am we will start the meeting which will run until 11:30 am., short meeting! Then a pot luck lunch. Please bring a dish to share with everyone and your own drinks. At 12:30 we will have an educational demonstration on how to stack a sheltie table and going over the head and structure and how to measure a sheltie. After that people who would like to participate can have people go over their dogs and they can go over other people's shelties. We would love to have people interact asking questions of club members doing the demonstration. This is just going to be a fun day with your dogs. Bring your puppies or older shelties of any age. Bring your family, and friends. And of course bring Food! This is an informal get together. Bring your own chair, your own drinks, a few tents and tables would nice if we need them. Tom True Article 4 Section 4 of SSCNC BY LAWS (A) (B) (C) (D) The Committee shall nominate one (1) candidate for each office and for the other positions on the Board. After securing the consent of each person so nominated the committee shall immediately report their nominations to the Recording Secretary in writing. Upon receipt of the Nominating Committee s report, the Recording Secretary shall (before the May meeting) notify the general membership of the candidates so nominated. Additional nominations may be made at the May meeting by any member in attendance provided that the person so nominated does not decline when their name is proposed. Furthermore, if the proposed candidate is not in attendance at this meeting, their proposer shall present to the Recording Secretary a written statement from the proposed candidate signifying their willingness to be a candidate. No person may be a candidate for more than one position. The additional nominations which are provided for herein may be made only from among those members who have not accepted a nomination of the Nominating Committee. Nominations cannot be made at the annual meeting or in any manner other than as provided in this section. It is the understanding of the Nominating Committee, if nominated from the floor at the May meeting the current President may run against the newly proposed candidate for the position of President. If the current President is defeated in the election, (he/she) is guaranteed an automatic position on the Board if (he/she) chooses to take it, thus eliminating one board position.
