Many comments were made that the cluster members worked so well together and that things went so flawlessly. Many members spent multiple days assisting and it was great to see some of the members that are not able to attend many shows during the year. 3 AKC Delegate Meeting June 13, 2011 Legislative Caucus 7:30 a.m. Sheila Goffe, AKC Legislative Liaison reported 1100 bills were introduced, eighteen states are still in session and special sessions do allow dog bills PUPS Bill (federal) is same as addressing high volume breeders, which does include own/co-owns 50 puppies offered for sale or sold USDA standards as a wholesale breeder will probably end up in the 2012/2013 Farm Bill (Agriculture Appropriations) which is up every five years TX 1451 is on the governor's desk - 11 intact cats/dogs and 20 cats/puppies sold in a year will need license from the state and you will be considered an USDA commercial wholesale breeder. The administration and inspection will be self-funded with a projected $100 license fee and a $1 million dollar budget. MI 4714 mandate banning all of the bully breeds is still in committee AKC PAC solicitation of individual members can occur but not directly from the club, delegates are encouraged to speak to individual club members Legislative Education Programs - 2 of the 4 programs are available in downloadable powerpoint format - the first being Overview of Legilation and the second Why Breed Specific Laws Do Not Work. Each is approximately fifteen minutes longer and available for viewing to any venue that you may choose to show it to. This can be found in the tool box in the Government Relations webpage. AKC Government Relations Department annual Legislative Conference will be held in Raleigh, NC at the Embassy Suites near the airport. It will be a one and a half/day conference held on August 27/28. Contact Patty Van Sicklin at AKC for registration. NAIA website has a letter downloadable to encourage veterinarians to act legislatively A Texas Delegate Legislative Caucus has been formed and the model of contacting legislators is encouraged for other states at a grassroots level. Talking points include unfunded projects and anti-dog positions NAIA Conference November in Harrisburg, PA withe the theme of celebration of the purebred dog with speakers including Julian Prager and Cindy Miller Humane Relocation - with the importation of foreign dogs it will be encouraged to have 48 hour quarantine and health certificates issued as many imports do not have any version of immunization and also there is the possibility of importing infectious diseases that are not known to this country that could affect humans as well as other animals CT Federation was able to get 15 day health certificates and also re-newable health certificates; defeated was a proposal for HSUS education in schools Canine Health Foundation 9:00 a.m. Pioneering Research for a Healthier World of Dogs Dr. Warren Page 3

4 CHF is the largest organization in the world that solely funds dog research, $2.8 million has been invested, mapping of the dog genome is important as it is 85% the same as humans, $1.6 million in grants for % of Americans own a pet with 77.5 million dogs, $22.4 billion in spent on family pets in a year Delegate Meeting 10:00 a.m. Gina DiNardo explained the reasons for the change in the Gazette and ran through the format of the new magazine explaining the benefits and also the savings. Lisa Gonzalez, Vice-President of Marketing gave a presentation - Imagine the Future information presented included kennel inspections, canine health research, lost dog recovery program and search and rescue programs. Research shows that AKC has a low awareness of what it does with the general public. There are 142,00 casual breeders that breed three or more litters a year which represents 80% of the registry. Marketing surveys show that there are 300,000 new people interested in participating in some type of AKC event. Operation Jumpstart will be an ad campaign in major magazines to increase AKC awareness and registrations. Three ads are available for viewing on the website at his time A new therapy title THD will go into effect Monday, June 27, A recognized therapy certificate will be needed with documentation of 50 hours of service, A vote to have board members that had served two terms have to stay off the board for four years before reapplying was defeated. Readings for the September vote include: restriction of a member that has mis-appropriated AKC clubs at any level, the right of a delegate to appeal removal from the delegate body, establishment of a reserve best-in -show and removing closing date language in regard to eligibility in the novice class. The reading for additional group placements was pulled from the agenda Respectfully submitted Wayne Harmon CMKC Delegate When temperatures climb and the summer sun beats down, conditions are ripe for Minnesota lakes to produce harmful algae blooms, some of which can be harmful to pets and humans. What: Harmful algal blooms (HAB) are bluegreen (cyanobacterial) algal blooms containing toxins or other noxious chemicals, which can pose harmful health risks. Why is this a concern? People or animals may develop skin irritation or upper respiratory problems from exposure to HAB, and in extreme cases, dogs and other animals have even died after drinking lake water containing these toxins. Where: Severe blue-green algal blooms typically occur on lakes with poor water quality (high in nutrients), and look like green paint, pea soup, or a thick green cake (see photo gallery below for examples). HAB often result in extremely low water clarity (less than 1 foot). There is no visual way to predict the toxicity of an algal bloom What should I do if I suspect a HAB on my lake? When these conditions are present, people should avoid contact with the water and they should prevent animals from swimming in or drinking the water. Scientists do not yet know what causes some blooms to produce toxins while others do not, so the safest course of action is to avoid contact with all blue-green blooms. Who should I call? If you believe you or your pets are experiencing adverse health effects due to contact with, or ingestion of, lake water/ algae, you should seek medical attention immediately. Sonbar's You Yearnivpuzzles picked up a 4 point major from puppy class at the Cluster(she's 6 months 2 weeks old), Sonbar's Undeniably Unique picked up a 3 point major from BBE.at the Cluster Ch Sonbar's Seventh Son of Djakomba (Sam) is the sire of Laura Mae Hesse's puppy dog Laurel S'Simply Goes too Far, he won 2 majors, 4 points each, from puppy class (He's almost 7 months old), and Sam's the sire of Laura Mae's bitch, Laurel S'Salways Wonder & Amaze. She picked up a major from BBE. Way to go Sally!!
