To be voted on in September. If passed you can show one class dog and one class bitch and the one awarded BOW, will receive one point. See full report on pages 5 though 9 of this newsletter. Cluster Report: The 2018 Summer Solstice was a huge success. Held entries and were up a few days. All four days, plus the specialties was 4,827. The largest increase in dogs was in German Shepherds. It worked well. Judges and exhibitors were positive with the show hospitality, the food needs improvement next year and health clinics need to e better organized. Barn Hunt and Dock Diving were a huge success. Many people worked hard to do a great job. The show photographers office manager, Shirley the office manger had breast cancer surgery and therefore the photo s getting out to exhibitors were late. Bill Meyer (original photographer) has passed away, and his son Dan Meyer took the photo s this year and next year will have everything on digital. The dates for the 2019 Cluster will be June April Obedience: Will be held April 6 and 7. Two trials Saturday and Sunday. Two judges have been contacted. Chuck Kline (local) and Susan Oviatt-Harris (Colorado). Thank you to Annette for all her work. Wayne says he created a bit of a mess and Annette hung in there. A huge thank you to Gretchen for her many years of service in Obedience, we accept your resignation in the leadership role. We greatly appreciate all you have done. August Obedience: Judges are hired. The German Shepherd club wants permission to hold an all breed Obedience trial on the same date. CMKC will not be giving permission. Agility: Diane Clyne has asked that we purchase a program to help with tracking the agility trials. For a fee of $150 for one year or $300 for three years. It was unclear as to when the 12 month period begins, calendar year!3

or from date of purchase. They offer a 30 day trial. If it is a calendar year beginning January 1, 2019 we will approve purchase for 1 year, plus the 30 day trial. If Ava (person to input data) does not find this program acceptable within the 30 day trial, we will not purchase it. Motion to approve, Wayne, 2nd Tim, all in favor. Wayne will contact Diane Clyne. Kids Fair: Karen will be setting up at the Isanti Fair Grounds on July 20th and it will run from 8:00 to Noon. She is looking for more volunteers. 5 AKC Delegate Report by: Wayne Harmon CMKC Delegate AKC Education Summit June 10, 11 & 12, 2018 All-Breed clubs were invited to send one member of their club to attend. Three hundred eighty six clubs were represented. Departments representing AKC responsibilities spoke throughout the day. Programs included: Evolution of Dog Sports Doug Lundgren All info presented on this day will be available on akctv.org/edsummit. There will also be a webinar on June 27 for attendees to ask live questions. 60.2% of American households own a dog. AKC is promoting Purpose Bred Dogs based on conformation, instincts and temperament. AKC is now supporting 17 titling sports, over 13,000 events representing 56% of the entries. Trends include getting a dog that is based on that breed s function. 70% of those pursuing dog acquisition believe that adopting a shelter dog is the best way to get a dog. 38% of millennials own a dog (15% of new conformation participants), 26% of Generation Xers (36% new in conformation and 36% of Boomers own dogs (representing 49% of new conformation participant). Millenials value experience over possessions, they have a fear of missing out and are interested in participating. Because of their sense of entitlement they do not want to pay their dues, concerned about cost versus value, prefer convenience and rapid gratification. Their values will not change with age. This generation is connected to phones and social media. They do not respond to messages more than five words, not into branding, growing up as culturally diverse and will change jobs frequently. 27% enjoy sports, interest is in the internet, 7% are involved in sport, 37% are inactive. Cost of a sport is a factor. Prefer activities that are pass/fail over competition. A change is breeding practices is needed. Breeder s of Merit include 6.3% of registrations of purpose bred dogs. 42% of their registrations are limited. There are has been a decline in dog registrations for more than fifteen years. An increase in registrations started in 2014, many new breeds were added as well as the Breeder of Merit program. Motivations for becoming involved in dog activities include: fun, social activities, sense of improvement and physical/mental activity improves health. In 1994, AKC added agility which was the first activity in which non-purebred dogs could participate. Canine Good Citizen (CGC) has just awarded its millionth certificate. Rally started in 2005 and was planned to be used as a lead-in activity to obedience. It has turned out to be a sport on its own. The STAR program was introduced in 2009 which is a puppy socialization program. Only 10% of AKC registered dogs ever compete in an activity. Farm Dog Certification is increasing. Trick titles are sustaining and growing strong. There is a new Versatility Dog Program and temperament test. The Challenge for AKC is how much change is needed? AKC s plan is to promote sports, training and education by promoting multi-activity events, life-long enjoyment, diversified events, passive transition to events and reduce bureaucracy. AKC needs to tell its story because many clubs do good things that are not shared. They are encouraging multi-sport events, encourage social engagement and promote club membership. AKC is successful if: our events are welcoming, a need to be inclusive, reduce burden of participation, understand the competing of time for our events, have AKC breeders embrace new breeders. AKC Club Development Glen Lycan The department is to provide support for clubs with the goal of addressing lower entries, increased expenses and dwindling membership. A membership coordinator is a 2018 goal.!5

Guy Fisher spoke to having the department offer assistance in planning, choosing optimal dates, adding optional events, communicate successful event information, update manuals, support best practices, promote club outreach and develop club brochure. A panel of show chairs explained events that they had added to their shows and shared which were successful. To find out more of the suggestions check out the akctv.org/edsummit Club Development video. Junior Showmanship MariBeth O Neill A suggestion is to require RHP. Adding 4-H only events is also seeing success. Jackets for Juniors is a program in which show clothes are donated to junior participants. Pizza and ice cream are also appreciated. Scholarships have been successful also. Several clubs have been successful with PeeWee competition. AKC is encouraging 4-H outreach including free registration for all 4-H participants and free CGC tests. Participation is also encouraged for Trick Dog, Farm Dog certification, ACT and Junior Showcase. A Junior Showcase includes obedience, rally and agility competition. The Junior Ambassador program encourages activities in purebred events. Included in the ambassador program are conformation, obedience, rally, agility, dock dogs, barnhunt, FAST CAT, WAE, weight pull, open show and scent work. Juniors are able to earn pins by participating in community events, assist in dog events and participate in dog events. Breed Preservation Mark Dunn 80% of registration are represented by 50 breeds. 100 breeds are going down in registrations. 36.8% of puppies were individual registered based on litter registration complements(2008) which accounted for 1.7 million registrants. Herding group registrations continue to go up, lead by the German Shepherd Dogs. Toy group registrations continue to go down. Scotties have dropped significantly in 2008, 1000 in In that same period limited registrations went from 4.5% to 9%. Limited registration usage Sporting breeds 4% 6% Toy breeds 4% 9% Working breeds 5% 9% Herding breeds 6% 7% Non-sporting 5% 9% Terrier breeds 6% 12% 9% of the puppies registered in 2008 were bred, 3% were shown. Although registrations are starting to increase, 109 breeds are below registrations numbers from Representatives for the Scottish Terrier Club of America, Otterhound Club of America and Dandie Dinmont Club of America presented information regarding surveys of members/owners and preservation plans being developed. The three most important factors were supply/ demand, number of breeders and health of the breed. German Shepherd Club of America represented a breed that was being successful. Schutzhund was re-introduced in They have 6000 national club members and 120 specialty clubs. It is important for parent club members to encourage breeders to breed to the standard. 17 breeds did not have a national last year. Breeding used to be considered animal husbandry, it is now considered a sport. Judges Education is not to be based on what is popular, but what is correct. Club Communications Brandi Hunter AKC will be presenting four webinars regarding social media. The Communications Team is also preparing an I- book. Use social media for press releases and pitch new concepts, the key is to respond quickly. Follow up twice and then leave alone. Have talking points at hand. Facebook continues to be the best. Designate one person to be the contact person. Post anything that has puppy pictures. Include community based articles. Instagram covers 800 million people,71% of business/organizations. Facebook has 2.2 billion users (hitting the population of years of age). Twitter has 360 million users, 68 million in U.S. and limits to 280 characters. A panel of participants described how they used social media.!6

Government Relations - Sheila Goff At this time there are two regional representatives, with two more to be added. AKC needs updated club information for legislative liaison. The department has seven staff members and is a one-stop-shop at akcgr.org There are several 20 minute videos available to be shown at club meetings going local is problematic for AKC because the legislation is difficult to track. Importation of retail rescue language is to be added to the 2018 Farm Bill. AKC is working to develop a detection dog breeding program. There eventually be a registry of service dogs. AKC CHF will be having their annual conference August 9-12 in St. Louis. This organization has funded 42.1 million in research. AKC Delegate Committee Meeting June 11, 2018 Companion/Performance Committee Agility entries continue to go down. There will be a National Obedience Championship and National Rally Championship to be held in Ohio in early July. The number of rally events is limited to twelve a year. There is a recommendation to change it to be unlimited so it will be like obedience. The Junior Showcase events continue to increase. The rally ROC will be changed because it is unachievable. Three different proposals are under study by staff. This information will be presented at the July board meeting and presented at the September delegate meeting. A discussion was held regarding deaf dogs competing in obedience as they already are eligible to compete in agility, rally and tracking this will also go to the July board meeting. The discussion continued to review previous dalmatian club concerns. The biggest concern centered around the fact that deaf dogs do not pick up on warning signs from other dogs. Developing a Lifetime Achievement Award for tracking, adding a fifth level to Trick Dog tell a story with a musical narrative 5 titles have been awarded at this time, must send in a video. Orlando will have a national championship of trick dog. 300 trick dog title applications are being received weekly. The Family Dog Program will be a re-branding of CGC variations and tricks. As of June 1 anyone can enter the agility Premier Class. Several changes have been made to clean-up some of the iffy parts of agility ex: four paws, handler touch, wrong exercise. The CGC-Urban will be made uniformly for the entire country. In the last three years there have been no new obedience/rally clubs, 5 new agility clubs, 2 obedience and 1 tracking club have been dissolved. Five new all-breeds club have been added and 4 dissolved. Obedience entries have been going down for the past five years. May obedience events from 2017 to 2108 are up 14%, Open B has a 30% failure rate, Novice A entries are up. Share information, not complain. All-breed clubs are continuing to drop obedience. An obedience/rally- all-breed presentation is being prepared for the next meeting. A survey is being prepared for obedience clubs that are consistently being successful. All info from AKC will be transferred to the Cloud by the end of the year, staff will not be able to take on any new tasks. The search engine is slowly being improved. Several staff members have been terminated due to launch, several others are ready to walk and the Marketplace people are being treated unbelievably bad. The state search. The launch was completed by an outside contractor from Costa Rica. The Good Dog Program was tabled Achiever Dog Certificates 23,00 have been issued encourage work in different areas of the sport (one year trial basis most people do not know why they are getting the award) Addition of a Versatility 1 (multi-event) and Versatility 2 (breed purpose driven) award.!7

Conformation Carmen Battaglia Only half the breeds show up at most shows, 15 breeds do not have a national, shrinking gene pools, majority of breeders are not breeding for show, 60 breeds are on track to be extinct, 50% of breeds are low-entry (less than 3500 entries annually), 80% of the low entry breeds have less than 1000 entries. 60% of the puppies registered by litter are not being registered individually. 3 low-entry breeds have over 40% limited registrations. The document that Dr. Battaglia presented at the November board meeting is available online and is being published in four parts by Canine Chronicle. A Canine College class will be developed for structure/health/standards Junior Showmanship participation 70% girls, 30% boys suggestion to have a Best Senior and a Best Junior A delegate google group will be started July 1, invitation will come from Amy Hammernick(moderator). The suggestion was to have more dogs registered. Welcome to the Dog Show pamphlet was circulated, adapt/adjust for each show. Rosette/ ribbon sub-committee working on aligning ribbons to not be dated, save money for the club will need a change in dog show rules. The Junior Ambassador Program encourages participation with youth organizations, a pin can be earned The 1+1=1 will be implemented for all breeds a dog show rule change is needed; 2 shows in one day limit judges to 100 dogs per show (175 limit still in effect) will make shows more efficient Canine Extravaganza promoting participation in many different events for new people, Legislation Caucus June state/federal bills introduced, 400 regulatory HR477 establish a domestic detection breeding program - Rep.Mike Rogers Senate 2738 standard for behavioral training for service dogs, emotional support dogs not included, USDA has agreed to not use third parties to inspect, HSUS has introduced legislation in Ohio to regulate dog breeding through a constitutional amendment NH- legislation introduced that anyone that has an intact bitch is a breeder, anyone owning 7 dogs high volume breeder Updated legislation liaison information is needed.
