1 G.S.Paws online Oct/Dec 2013 Visit us on Facebook Taber Pheasant Festival 8 Days, 30 Release sites, 3600 Pheasants The Taber Pheasant Festival is organized by the Alberta Conservation Association. Hunters register on-line for arranged hunts on one of the 30 pieces of private land generously donated by landowners in the area. A.C.A. brings in over 3500 pheasants that are released throughout these properties. All hunting regulations, licences, and bag limits apply to the hunts. This year s festival saw over 600 hunters register for hunting spots. Registration spots were filled in 3 minutes 14 seconds! Many hunters were disappointed. We were lucky! I thought I had hung the computer.i hadn t. Jassen Jackman, Janna Jackson, Dale, and I had secured the maximum 3 hunt spots allotted. This year the weather co-operated and we were assigned some wonderful hunt sites; although, the 7 ft cattails did give the older dogs a bit of grief. Two of the three days had us reach our bird limit far too soon. We were having trouble spacing out our bagged birds so that all the dogs got a chance to hunt. Day 3; however, was a different story. The birds had outsmarted us all! I even put the camera away for a while as Janna and I headed out carrying the guns and hoping for some luck. None was to be had that day. In between hunts we enjoyed the wonderful hospitality at Jassen and Janna s, visiting and running our dogs together. Since the inception of the Taber Pheasant Festival in 2011, we have always looked forward to and took pleasure in these hunts. The A.C.A., Town of Taber, and the surrounding communities have always been extremely welcoming to the barrage of blaze orange clad strangers who take over their community for 8 days in October. The mentored hunt allows novice hunters the chance to try a real hunt, shooting real birds over trained hunting dogs. The festival banquet and training seminars also provide chances to visit with fellow hunters and make new connections with people outside our community of dog people. Plan to attend but be prepared. 4 G.S.Paws online - October - December We held our Regional Specialty in conjunction with the Caledon Kennel Association for the 3rd year in a row and had our best ever entry. 14 for the regular & veteran sweepstakes and unofficial for the specialty. We look forward to welcoming members and friends that come out to show their dogs at this club event. After the show we held a potluck lunch and raffle, a big thank you to all who came out, brought food and donated to the raffle. Marked catalogue pages are included in this newsletter. Our club s booster show was held the following day.

5 G.S.Paws online - October - December Planning is well underway for the 2014 German Shorthaired Pointer Club of Canada National Specialty. The Specialty will be held on Saturday July 12th, in conjunction with the Evelyn Kenney Obedience and Kennel Club shows July 11 through 14th. Judges for the event are pending CKC confirmation, names to be released once we receive official approval. The Westwinds Sporting Dog Specialty will also be held on this weekend - along with four all breed shows, allowing six sets of points in one weekend. The GSPCC will boost obedience trials on Friday July 11th, and Rally Obedience trials on Sunday July 13th. The GSPCC will host an informal barbeque banquet the evening of the Specialty, and we invite everyone to attend. We are presenting our trophy donation list for your consideration, and thank you in advance for your generosity to assist in the success of the 2014 National Specialty. 9 G.S.Paws online - October - December A man in Grand Rapids, Michigan incredibly took out a $7000 full page ad in the paper to present the following essay to the people of his community. HOW COULD YOU? By Jim Willis, 2001 When I was a puppy, I entertained you with my antics and made you laugh. You called me your child, and despite a number of chewed shoes and a couple of murdered throw pillows, I became your best friend. Whenever I was "bad," you'd shake your finger at me and ask "How could you?" - but then you'd relent, and roll me over for a belly rub. My housebreaking took a little longer than expected, because you were terribly busy, but we worked on that together. I remember those nights of nuzzling you in bed and listening to your confidences and secret dreams, and I believed that life could not be any more perfect. We went for long walks and runs in the park, car rides, stops for ice cream (I only got the cone because "ice cream is bad for dogs," you said), and I took long naps in the sun waiting for you to come home at the end of the day. Gradually, you began spending more time at work and on your career, and more time searching for a human mate. I waited for you patiently, comforted you through heartbreaks and disappointments, never chided you about bad decisions, and romped with glee at your homecomings, and when you fell in love. She, now your wife, is not a "dog person" - still I welcomed her into our home, tried to show her affection, and obeyed her. I was happy because you were happy. Then the human babies came along and I shared your excitement. I was fascinated by their pinkness, how they smelled, and I wanted to mother them, too. Only she and you worried that I might hurt them, and I spent most of my time banished to another room, or to a dog crate. Oh, how I wanted to love them, but I became a "prisoner of love." As they began to grow, I became their friend. They clung to my fur and pulled themselves up on wobbly legs, poked fingers in my eyes, investigated my ears, and gave me kisses on my nose. I loved everything about them and their touch - because your touch was now so infrequent - and I would have defended them with my life if need be. I would sneak into their beds and listen to their worries and secret dreams, and together we waited for the sound of your car in the driveway. There had been a time, when others asked you if you had a dog, that you produced a photo of me from your wallet and told them stories about me. These past few years, you just answered "yes" and changed the subject. I had gone from being "your dog" to "just a dog," and you resented every expenditure on my behalf. Now, you have a new career opportunity in another city, and you and they will be moving to an apartment that does not allow pets. You've made the right decision for your "family," but there was a time when I was your only family. I was excited about the car ride until we arrived at the animal shelter.

10 G.S.Paws online - October - December HOW COULD YOU? By Jim Willis, Continued It smelled of dogs and cats, of fear, of hopelessness. You filled out the paperwork and said "I know you will find a good home for her." They shrugged and gave you a pained look. They understand the realities facing a middle-aged dog, even one with "papers." You had to pry your son's fingers loose from my collar as he screamed "No, Daddy! Please don't let them take my dog!" And I worried for him, and what lessons you had just taught him about friendship and loyalty, about love and responsibility, and about respect for all life. You gave me a goodbye pat on the head, avoided my eyes, and politely refused to take my collar and leash with you. You had a deadline to meet and now I have one, too. After you left, the two nice ladies said you probably knew about your upcoming move months ago and made no attempt to find me another good home. They shook their heads and asked "How could you?" They are as attentive to us here in the shelter as their busy schedules allow. They feed us, of course, but I lost my appetite days ago. At first, whenever anyone passed my pen, I rushed to the front, hoping it was you - that you had changed your mind - that this was all a bad dream...or I hoped it would at least be someone who cared, anyone who might save me. When I realized I could not compete with the frolicking for attention of happy puppies, oblivious to their own fate, I retreated to a far corner and waited. I heard her footsteps as she came for me at the end of the day, and I padded along the aisle after her to a separate room. A blissfully quiet room. She placed me on the table and rubbed my ears, and told me not to worry. My heart pounded in anticipation of what was to come, but there was also a sense of relief. The prisoner of love had run out of days. As is my nature, I was more concerned about her. The burden which she bears weighs heavily on her, and I know that, the same way I knew your every mood. She gently placed a tourniquet around my foreleg as a tear ran down her cheek. I licked her hand in the same way I used to comfort you so many years ago. She expertly slid the hypodermic needle into my vein. As I felt the sting and the cool liquid coursing through my body, I lay down sleepily, looked into her kind eyes and murmured "How could you?" Perhaps because she understood my dogspeak, she said "I'm so sorry." She hugged me, and hurriedly explained it was her job to make sure I went to a better place, where I wouldn't be ignored or abused or abandoned, or have to fend for myself - a place of love and light so very different from this earthly place. And with my last bit of energy, I tried to convey to her with a thump of my tail that my "How could you?" was not directed at her. It was you, My Beloved Master, I was thinking of. I will think of you and wait for you forever. May everyone in your life continue to show you so much loyalty. The End

14 G.S.Paws online - October - December Pumpkin Dog Cookie s 1 cup canned pumpkin (no seasonings) 1/4 cup of water 1.5 cups of whole wheat flour 1 cup of rice flour 1/2 cup of wheat germ 1/4 cup Brewers yeast 2 tbsp. garlic powder 1/4 olive oil Combine the dry ingredients then mix in the wet ingredients. Roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness and cut out treats. Bake at 325 F on a greased cookie sheet for 15 minutes. Apple and Banana Dog Treats 1 1/2 of oatmeal flour 1/4 cup of quick cooking oatmeal flakes 1/4 cup flax seed 1 egg 1 small jar of banana and apple baby food 1 teaspoon of honey 1 1/2 teaspoon of water (more or less) Preheat oven to 325 F Mix the oatmeal flour, oatmeal and flax seed together in a large bowl. Add the egg, baby food and honey to the powdered mixture and stir. If the mixture is dry, add the water. Sprinkle the counter with oatmeal flour and roll the dough out into a thin sheet. Either cut the dough into biscuits using a cookie cutter, cut the dough into round shapes using the baby food jar as a cookie cutter, or use a knife to cut the dough into squares. Transfer the cookies onto a cookie sheet and bake in the oven for minutes. The cookies are ready to come out of the oven when they feel semi soft. Allow the cookies to cool on a cookie rack. Some baby food manufacturers use corn syrup as a sweetener, if your dog has corn allergies, substitute for 1/4 cup of apples pureed in a blender plus 1/2 a banana.

First Place winners of each class will compete for Best in Sweepstakes and Best of Opposite Sex in Sweepstakes.
