1 G.S.Paws online OctDec 2014 Visit us on Facebook Canis Iupus familiaris + Phasianus colchicus = Got em By the Shorthairs Established in 2005, this small group of friends and GSP owners provides support and access to activities that help to alleviate the symptoms of the well- known bird fever that hits Alberta every year in the fall. This fever is not gender specific, and has been known to affect both humans and dogs. Symptoms include the inability to sleep in on weekends, difficulty in concentrating at work, unexplained excitement at the sight of a shotgun, severe cravings for the smell of gunpowder, and inexplicable deafness to anything other than the sound of a shotgun blast. The fever has cost the loved ones of those affected many hours of lost chore time, and household maintenance has suffered severely over the last decade. As a result, many us who are unaffected by the fever have joined together with those suffering to provide some much needed relief in the lives of those who have the affliction. On Nov 19 th, 2005 the first organized activity took place at the Stavely Pheasant Derby and it was there that Got em By The Shorthairs was formed. Fun is the main goal of our group. Squatters weekend is the first official event during the year. We kick off the summer on the July long weekend by getting together at FeatherQuest for a weekend of socializing and dog activities. Walks and swims, bird work, hay rides, a seriously competitive washer toss tournament are just some of the activities. Sitting around the fire pit reminiscing of hunts of the past and exaggerating the accuracy of ones shooting ability makes for entertaining evenings. The Delburne Canada Day parade plus the annual sighting of the fireflies and the shorthair weekend picture are all part of the festivities.

2 G.S.Paws online - October - December After a summer of individual pursuits in CKC field tests and field trials (both as participants and judges), conformation and obedience events, NAVHDA events and tests, in the field hunting for fun or in the whelping box raising the next generation of fur members; the whole group gathers together once again to participate in derbies and hunt festivals. What are derbies and festivals you may ask? Alberta is blessed with an abundance of those who suffer from bird fever. The result is a lot of people province wide that dream up activities to help our hunters get their fill of their favorite pastime hunting. Currently, Alberta has two annual derbies to partake in. Derbies are competitive team hunts, where teams of up to 6 hunters and two dog handlers are supplied with 10 hen and 40 rooster pheasants which are released on assigned plots of land. After a period of waiting for the birds to settle (or fly off), teams set out to hunt down as many of the roosters as they can. One of the roosters sports a color coded band. Get the band and your team is entered for a draw for a cash prize. Prizes are awarded for most roosters shot, the longest tail feather, and the good sportsman award for the team that had a really, really bad day. Festivals, on the other hand, are part of the Alberta Conservation Association s attempt to do some re-population of pheasants in areas of the province. One must register many months in advance for the opportunity to be assigned plots of land where birds have been released at some point during the day or evening previous. A maximum of 4 hunters are allowed on the land, and you are hunting off your game bird licences so all daily and possession limits apply. Hunters are allowed a maximum of three hunt times throughout the festival week. Our first organized event, the Big Country Oilman s Pheasant Derby in Patricia, AB took place on Sept. 27th. Our 5 gunners, 1 junior hunter, 1 dog handler, 11 GSPs and photographer arrived in preparation for the event. Friday evening is one of friendly boasting and the assignment of our team marshal and land draw for the next day s hunt. We were lucky and received a flat piece of land with a dry creek bed through the middle. Great for our senior GSPs of 13+ years and for the aching aging hunters as well as the photographer who broke her foot this summer! Our 40 pheasants were released and the hunt began Wiley running birds dodged the dogs and the hunters. There was no place for the birds to hide, yet they disappeared. 5 hours of hunting with experienced and inexperienced hunters and dogs produced only 27 birds. The highlight; however, was watching Andrew (our junior hunter) shoot his first pheasant and having his dog Jetty retrieve it to hand. Great job you two!! As always, we gather for the team photo, propose a toast to our hunting companions who work hard for us in the field and those who were on the hunt with us in our hearts. 3 G.S.Paws online - October - December Next on the fall agenda saw a few of our team members participate in a couple of pheasant festivals around the province. Stettler organized their first festival this year. It s a huge undertaking getting these events up and running, and we look forward to being able to participate for many years to come. The Taber Pheasant Festival followed closely behind. This festival has been a constant in the lives of a couple of our members since its inception in This year Dale, Jassen, and Janna were joined by Bill and Bryce. Both these gentlemen own 5 mo. old Firepoint puppies bred by Jassen and Janna. Cooper and Olive were participating in their first ever pheasant festival and they did great! The weather co-operated for the most part, and the birds were plentiful. Limits were reached far too soon and had senior dogs giving the hunters grief for missing the birds we were no longer able to shoot. The two 13 year old girls, Asia and Raesa, hunted like two year olds. Asia was battling a vestibular episode and Raesa was recovering from a pinched nerve in her back, but the smell of birds healed all ailments. I have never seen such big doggy smiles. Old Rae The final event of hunting season is the much anticipated Stavely Pheasant Derby. This year saw the 10th anniversary of this beloved weekend. Bill and Dale have participated all ten years. This year was the 9th year for the Got em By The Shorthairs team. It was a bit of a scary week leading up to the derby, as snow and cold temperatures threatened to put a freeze on the fun. Luckily southern Alberta is blessed with chinooks, and one decided to push its way into the area the Saturday morning of the hunt. Clear blue skies, light winds and a balmy -4 temp made for a pleasant day in the field. And a great day it was! The birds co-operated and the dogs and hunters worked well together resulting in a team record 38/40 roosters bagged. The day ended far too soon, and leaves behind good memories and an intense yearning for next year s event to hurry up and arrive. Shotzy Supervises All Social Events

4 G.S.Paws online - October - December This article jokingly starts off poking fun at the hunters in our group, but the reality is we are a group of GSP lovers who go to extreme lengths to get our fur kids as many opportunities as possible to go out and hunt - something they are bred for and love to do. We are blessed here in Alberta with an abundance of available land and an understanding and tolerance for the sport of hunting. We also understand that hunting is not for everyone. Whatever your chosen sport is to share with your GSP, we wish you much enjoyment together. After all, isn t spending time with your fur kid what it s all about? 5 G.S.Paws online - October - December GSPCC Regional Specialty at Caledon KA all breed show Our club held a Regional Specialty in conjunction with the Caledon Kennel Association at the Toronto International Centre on Saturday November 29th, followed by a Booster Show on Sunday, for a 4th year in a row. Our members and friends have come to expect this yearly event and once again brought a great display of GSPs. Our specialty judge was Ramón Podesta and our sweepstakes judge Julie Pullan. We appreciate and thank everyone for their donations to the prize fund; Francois Bernier and Jocelyne Paul (Bajnok Reg'd) for the lovely Oakhill pottery, to Nancibeth Koutstaal, Lyndsay Ferguson, Katie Dowson (who also came out to watch the show all the way from Alberta), Heather Brennan and Mike & Maria Foster. Many thanks to everyone who contributed to the raffle and the pot luck lunch, it is always lot of fun.
