2 G.S.Paws online - January - March Greetings Fellow GSPCC Members! I am thrilled to be writing my inaugural President's Message that will be included in GSPaws issues moving forward. This is an opportunity for me to update you on what's going on with our board and our club and stay connected to you, our valued members. As we surface from the icy cold winter we've had, we can look forward to an eventful Spring and Summer! Our National Specialty Show Committee has been busy planning our upcoming National Specialty Show as well as a Regional Specialty to be held in Ste. Foy, Quebec on August 1st and 2nd. We can also look forward to our Regional Specialty Show and Booster to be held in conjunction with the Erie Shores Kennel Club shows June 6th and 7th in Ontario. New to our roster of conformation shows this year is a Regional Specialty on July 19th in Surrey, B.C., to be held in conjunction with the Sporting Dog Club of BC's shows. In the field, our annual Field Dog Tests will be held on May 16th and 17th in Grand Valley, Ontario. We are in need of volunteers to help out at our field tests. If you are interested, please visit our website's events page and contact the test secretary. We have several other events and initiatives in the works that I will share with you in my next Message so stay tuned! 6 G.S.Paws online - January - March Field Test Season by Heather Brennan As we come once again into field test season, it seemed an opportune time to discuss all the benefits of getting out with your dog and seeing his natural instincts in action. We re very lucky in that the GSP is one of the few sporting breeds that has not seen a huge split develop between field and show lines. The majority of GSPs have enough basic instinct that, combined with good training, they can develop into a good companion hunter. This doesn t mean they all have the potential to earn their FDX or become dual champions but they can definitely offer a fun day afield for dog and owner. It s impossible to find enough time to do everything your dog can do. Between work, family, and other commitments, there is a limit on how many ways you can spread your time. If your main canine interest is conformation, obedience, agility, dock diving, or something other than field work you may find it difficult to find enough time to pursue field work with your dog. However, even if you choose not to pursue field titles on your dogs, you should consider at least attending the occasional field test to see dogs in action. You might ask yourself what relevance a field test has if that is not your chosen sport and hunting does not interest you. However, our breed standard was designed to create a dog that could hunt all day. The same traits that make him a good hunting dog will give him more stamina and agility in just about any sport you choose to pursue with your dog. These same physical traits should make him a good choice in the conformation ring as well. If you are a breeder, you will likely sooner or later have at least one (and more likely lots) of puppy buyers who are looking for a companion on weekend forays into the field. Understanding what a good gundog does in the field will make you a better breeder. It may also open your eyes to a new sport that you find much more interesting than you expected. Even if you would never go hunting, a field test gives you a chance to watch your dog work a field. It s positively beautiful and exciting as they quiver on point, waiting for the bird to be flushed. The intensity of a good dog on point is a great photo for anyone who loves photography. For those of you already involved, I would like to suggest a new goal. We have a serious shortage of field test judges. If you enjoy field work and have put an FD title on a dog, consider going further and apprenticing. Even if you don t end up becoming a judge, apprenticing gives you an opportunity to learn from experienced judges which can only improve your own work with your dog. More than one person has gone to watch and ended up wanting to participate. Field tests are lots of fun. Everyone is friendly and supports one another. It is a great way to spend a day and everyone is welcome. Many children are in attendance, so don t feel you need a babysitter to attend. Just come out and join us.
