1 Sept: 2018 MILTON ULLADULLA DOG TRAINING CLUB INC President s Report August saw a very early start to the fire season in 2018 and I am sure all members would join with me in thanking everyone involved in volunteering their time to fight the fires and provide back up support to the fire crews. Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the helicopter pilot tragically killed when fighting the fires to the west of Milton With Milton Showground being used for the helicopter landings and evacuation it was not possible to hold our ADAA Agility competition there as planned for the weekend 18,19 August. We are extremely grateful to Tony Hardman and Kirra Dowling from the Mollymook Oval Management Committee for making their grounds available at very short notice. Everyone loved the new venue and we are investigating whether we will be able to use the Oval again next year, possibly earlier in the year, for our 2019 event. A huge thank you to member Jenny Marshall for her wonderful organisation of the 2018 ADAA agility weekend. There is a tremendous amount of work involved in putting on such an event, which once again was a great success. Also thank you very much to the members who worked so hard before and during the event; Jenny Patch, Cheryl Ball, Janet Smith, Jan Lyall, Rosie Milton, Belinda Smithers, Bea Mies, Diane Richmond, Janis Price, Kylie White, Mark Wilden, Warwick Taylor, Danielle Butson, and to all Club members who donated slices and cakes for the catering and prizes for the raffle, we had 42 prizes and raised $485. Thank you to sponsors K9 Kellandy (vouchers) and Man s Best Friend (dog food) for their generous donations; Mollymook Caravan Park for supporting us again with the donation of an accommodation package for the raffle, Kylie White for the donation of an amazing cake in the shape of a dog, which was raffled separately, Sue Swaney for the MUDTC dog bowls, Connie Kluck for donating her entry fee for prizes and Jenny Marshall who prepared lots of home-made dog treats as prizes for the competitors. I would like to let members know that committee resolved at its last meeting to make a donation of $100 towards the Farmers Drought Appeal. Life Member, Instructor and Equipment Officer Mark Wilden has recently resigned from Dog Club. I give my sincere appreciation on behalf of all members for Mark s dedication, help and support over the past 8 years, we will miss him and hope that Mark will return to Dog Club in the future. 3 Sept: 2018 MUDTC Annual ADAA Agility Competition 18 & 19 August marks the 6th year that MUDTC has organised an ADAA Agility Event and once again this year s event was a great success. Club committee and event Secretary Jenny Marshall would especially like to thank our Sponsors: Mollymook Caravan Park K9 Kellandy Mans Best Friend dog food Sue Swaney bowls for prizes Various club members who donated prizes and items for the raffle Connie Kluck who was unable to attend due to the smoke impacting her health so donated her entry fee to be used for prizes All the Club members who worked so hard before, during and after the event to ensure it was a success Thank you to Tony Hardman and Kirra Dowling (Mollymook Oval Management Committee) and MURLFC for use of the grounds The number of entries over the 2 days was 595 over 22 classes. There were 46 Handlers with 76 Dogs entered, and there was a large contingent from Shoalhaven Dog Training club in Nowra. Jan Lyall busy selling raffle tickets Bronze Handler Award presented to Danielle Butson Our club members were well represented over the weekend with some great results and while some did not have success they enjoyed themselves. Some highlights were, Danielle Butson with Tia Maria and Reedyvale Kahlua were the only dogs to get the distance challenge in Gamblers and Placed 1 st and 2 nd and also had some Qualifications and places in Advanced and Open Jumping and Advanced Agility. Reedyvale Kahlua also gained the final qualifications for their Gamblers Dog Title and their Agility Championship one of the highest awards that can be gained. Danielle was also awarded her Bronze Handler Award presented by ADAA this is achieved by getting 100 qualification cards Warwick Taylor competed at his first trial and had great success with 5 qualifications and several places. Beate Mies also competed with Bonita and Mia and you can read Bea s wonderful story of the weekend on the next page. Other club members competing were Kylie White with Zing, Belinda Smithers with Kelly and Captain, Rosie Milton with Dan and Tazzi, Jenny Marshall with Keeper, Sue Swaney with Bonnie and Lass and Rachel Haynes with Turbo and Star It was a great weekend despite the wind and we were lucky not to be impacted by the smoke. Thanks everyone Jenny Marshall 3
4 Mia, Regular Senior Australian Agility Dog (R-SAAD) Finally! 4 Sept: 2018 Training and working a Beagle is a challenging and sometimes (very) frustrating endeavour. Their ground-engaging noses largely prevent the smooth running of an agility course as there is a myriad of smells to be followed. Mia, 5 years old, was beautifully trained in obedience and agility by my dear friend Beth, who sadly passed away last November. Despite all efforts, and in the face of grave illness, Beth pursued her dying wish to obtain that last qually towards Mia s next ADAA title. The 2017 Milton ADAA trial had added 2 new clear round cards to her existing stash (4 down, 1 to go) but it wasn t to be Beth and Mia were regular visitors to Milton, and the MUDTC double-header agility trial always called for an extended long weekend, during which Mia and Bonnie could play to their hearts content - the well-worn race track in our backyard is testament to their eagerness to chase and play together. At Brush Farm obedience school, in November 2013 Bonnie was a 12-month-old puppy who wanted nothing more than introduce herself to every dog on the grounds, mostly with little success as she was big and quite boisterous (in the best sense of the word, I might add) Mia, despite her small size, was allowed to play with Bonnie after class. The following week, Beth and Mia joined Parramatta International Canine Sports, and to the dogs delight, they now had more opportunities to run (and generally distract each other from their chosen sports, i.e. flyball for Bonnie and agility for Mia). Shortly after Mia s 4 th birthday last year, while Beth was undergoing medical treatment, Mia had her first epileptic seizure, and these kept coming, every 3 weeks or so, in clusters of 3 and 4 fits during a 24-hour period. Witnessing this is very stressful, and I cannot imagine how Beth must have felt when she was battling with her own physical and mental pain. I feel privileged to have known Beth, and thank her for her trust in me to take care of her precious dog. With Bonnie s help, Mia adapted very quickly to life in Milton. Needless to say that I constantly worry about Mia s condition, and the daily routine of having to administer anticonvulsant medication keeps me on my toes. Being not very experienced at trialling, those toes (with the attending feet and body bulk) had to go into overdrive on the weekend of Aug 18/19, with 4 runs by 2 dogs at 2 different levels of agility over 2 days = 16 different courses! Both Bonnie and Mia gave me some beautiful runs and Mia in particular resisted the urge to run off and further hone her already refined olfactory system, resulting in one clear round and certificate in intermediate agility. Yeah, last quallie down next title gained: For you, Beth! Bonnie collected 2 quallies, one in Elementary Jumping and one in Starters Agility no title yet. So, here s to tackling 16 different courses at any given trial, probably for quite some time yet. Bea

We have a ute and trailer available, but an extra trailer would be great. If you can help please see Warwick, Janet or Jenny Patch at training on Sunday or contact via to info@mudtc.org.au - thanks.
