1 Oct : 2018 MILTON ULLADULLA DOG TRAINING CLUB INC President s Report Another busy and enjoyable month with our dogs at Milton Ulladulla Dog Training Club. A big thank you to Jan Kielly for holding a second training workshop on 22 September. I was very pleased that so many members attended, and from such a variety of our classes, from Quick Start through to Class 4. Jan gave us lots of training advice, demonstrating the various exercises with her own dogs. We received excellent feedback from our members who attended the workshop and those who had an individual lesson with Jan in the afternoon. Hopefully we will be able to organise similar training workshops for members in Thank you to our demonstration team members who spent a very enjoyable morning with the Milton Ulladulla Seniors Respite group at Burrill Lake Community Hall on 25 September. This is our second visit this year and everyone loves the company of our dogs. Special thanks to Diane for liaising with the Respite group to arrange these visits. The team will be in action again on 9 October with a visit to Sarah Claydon Retirement Village. Would you like to become involved in the management of your Club? The Club is run by a Committee, and all positions will be declared vacant at the AGM to be held in the next few weeks. 3 Oct: 2018 Dogs and cats protected in spring? Ticks RSPCA Remove your pet s collar and run your fingers through your pet s fur, including under the legs, between the toes and in folds of skin, feeling for any lumps or inconsistencies. Paralysis ticks, when engorged with blood, have a blueish to light-grey/grey colour. You can easily search for an image of the paralysis tick online, to see exactly what to look for. If you find a tick on your pet, remove it immediately and keep your pet calm and quiet. When removing a tick, it s best to wear disposable gloves and remove it by its head at the point of insertion into the skin (don t squeeze the body) because if its mouth parts are left in, they are likely to cause a local infection. Ticks may be small, but they can be deadly. Making sure you protect your pet from these pests is imperative, especially at this time of year, when ticks are actively prowling to find a host. There are many types of ticks, and several of them have the potential to cause illness in cats and dogs, with paralysis ticks being the most dangerous of them all. These little critters attach themselves to your dog or cat, bury under their skin, and inject a deadly poison into your pet s body while they feast on their blood. Luckily, there are a few simple ways to help your beloved pooch or kitty stay safe this tick season. Firstly, if you are in an area with ticks, use tick control products to provide one line of defence. There are many such products on the market, so it s best to talk to your vet or pet product retailer to find the right one for your pet. Don t be tempted to use your dog s tick control on your cat, though, as these can be highly toxic to cats. Avoiding walking in tick habitats such as bushland and scrub, as well as keeping your lawn short and removing compost material, will help reduce exposure to ticks. Most importantly, searching your pet every day for ticks is the optimal way of preventing tick paralysis. No doubt your dog or cat will love the attention and a good rub, so this should be enjoyable for them, too! When searching your pet for ticks, look for a small, round or flat shape sticking out of your pet s skin they might look a bit like a skin tag. These creatures especially like to dig in behind ears or on the face and neck, so pay extra attention to these areas. 3 A tick remover is a handy tool to have on hand it lifts the tick out easily. Use antiseptic to clean the area after removal, and place the tick in a zip-lock bag to show your vet. Remember to continue to search for more ticks as your pet may have more than one. If your pet has been bitten by a paralysis tick, don t offer food or water or give anything orally as they cannot protect their airway when they swallow (as a result of the toxin). Take them straight to the vet as a matter of emergency - tick paralysis is a life-threatening condition, and every minute can count. Even if you can t find a tick on your pet, there are certain symptoms to look for that give an indication that your pet might be suffering from tick paralysis. These symptoms include: weakness or loss of coordination in the back legs or not being able to stand; a change in the sound of their bark or voice; retching, coughing or vomiting; excessive drooling; loss of appetite; and difficulty breathing. If your pet displays any of these symptoms, rush them to the vet immediately. The best line of defence against all types of ticks is prevention. Being tick-aware and proactive is the best way to protect your beloved pet from suffering the effects and potential lethal consequences of tick paralysis this season. 4 Oct : 2018 Essentials that all children should know NEVER approach a strange dog unless the owner is present. ALWAYS ask the owner before you pat or play with their dog. TAKE care not to get dogs over-excited when you play with them don t scream or wave your arms. Don t grab or cuddle a dog around the neck, as this can frighten it. LEAVE dogs alone when they are eating or are near their food. DON T surprise a sleeping dog. SOME TIPS Why you shouldn't let dogs play with sticks: Dogs love sticks, but sticks don t always love dogs! Dogs are frequently injured from chewing sticks or chasing sticks Both chewing and chasing sticks can cause severe and potentially fatal problems. If your dog impales himself on a stick, immediate veterinary attention is critical 4 Hot weather and your Pet Supply fresh cold water in the shade Place ice blocks in your pet s water bowl Ensure your pet has shade and limit exercise during the hot parts of the day. It is best to walk only early in the morning or very late in the evening Keep animals quiet and in a room with cool surfaces such as tiled floors. Provide a bed so they have an option of somewhere comfortable to sit if they want to. Consider a wading pool for your dog; many love to lie down in the water. Place it in the shade.

Tia gained qualifications in Open Jumping, 2 Master Jumping passes and 2 Open Agility passes. Lua gained qualifications in Master Agility, passes in Master Jumping, Open Agility and Open Jumping. Lua was also part of the 4Paws Loyalist team who won Division 4 at the Flyball Nationals held in Kiama September. Congratulations to Karen Gould and Harmon who have gained their Community Companion Dog Title Karen wrote On the 1st September Harmon and I travelled to ACT Companion Dog Club for a obedience trial chasing our third pass in CCD. He was working really well then as we were completing our figure 8 at the end of our heel pattern, the largest crow I've ever seen came to land on the fence of our ring. Naturally my gundog spotted it before anyone else and therefore went into pointer mode missing a sit. Luckily a steward persuaded the crow to leave and naturally Harmon watched its path to further down the area, the judge allowed me a bit of time to get Harmon's focus back on me before we continued. He passed with a score of 86, he wasn't fully focused on me for the remainder of the trial, keeping an eye out for the crow which did return to sit in a nearby tree during the stays. We are now going to work on our off lead work and continue to work on the whining he has started do- Harmon with his Title ribbon and certificate Bailey with her Rally O Ribbons and Certificates 6

He came from Townsville that day and there was an Aussie Shepherd puppy on the same flight as well. He is now 12 weeks old and is having such a great time experiencing new adventures, we are starting on life skills so we are toilet training, learning how to get on with other dogs (including my own), how to negotiate stairs, wait at the door, sleep in a crate and play with all the toys that I have managed to buy since I knew I was getting a puppy. Eventually he will be trained in agility but at the moment we are getting exposure to all those things that will happen in everyday life. After settling in his personality is starting to shine through he loves to play with all kinds of toys but bark is the best, loves to Gorgeous Puppy Spy Keep Well Sending positive keep well wishes to Rico, whose owner Jan Lyall has been through a very worrying time recently. Rico has had some major health scares in the past month but pleased to report that all is going well at the moment. Farewell Jemmie Thinking of member Jackie Koppman who recently lost her very special Kelpie 15 year old Jemmie. Sincere thanks to Rosemary Rixon who has kindly taken on the job of cutting up the training treats we sell on Sundays. Showground Management Committee Members may not know that the Showground itself is run by a volunteer Management Committee made up of members of the various users of the ground. Thank you to Dog Club members Colleen Ringe and Lynette Johnston who represent our Club on the committee. The Showground Management Committee AGM was held on 24 September and Rachael Martin was elected as the new President. Colleen has taken on the job of Assistant Treasurer, but unfortunately no-one was available to take on the role of Secretary which remains unfilled. Current requests include; improved lighting for the agility fenced area, water connection to enable a tap inside the fenced area and mulch for the dog park. We have also made a formal request to Council through the Management committee for Council to allocate a future budget to ensure the public dog park is properly maintained. Dog Club contributes an annual ground rental fee to the Showground Management committee which covers all our current use. If we hold separate major events, such as our ADAA Agility Event then we pay separately for that hire.
