1 March 2014 Issue No: 85 MUDTC Newsletter President s Message All Dog Club Correspondence should be addressed to: The Secretary PO Box 274 MILTON NSW 2538 Or info@mudtc.org. au Phone: Or FOR INFORMATION UPCOMING EVENTS AT THE SHOWGROUND MILTON SHOW 28 FEB 1 MARCH NO TRAINING 2 MARCH RELAY FOR LIFE MARCH TRAINING AS USUAL Welcome back to dog training at the Club in 2014, and a big thank you to all our Instructors and Volunteers who have returned to our Club this year. We could not exist without you all. In January, on Australia Day, Diane organised a demonstration of obedience, agility, weave poles and fly ball at the Lions Club Australia Day event at Mollymook. Our small group did the dog club proud and there were lots of positive comments after we had finished from members of the public. Thank you to Diane, Jenny, Rosemary, Kylie, Mark, and first time member Penny with her dog Sam. Also many thanks to Janet for the commentary and to Margaret, and Tony Rolfe, for taking photos. Also on Australia Day, Rick s demo team once again attended Sussex Inlet, and again this was a huge success. The crowd loved the dogs, big and small, slow and fast and while it was very hot, all handlers and dogs worked really well. At Sussex Inlet, first time team member Pat took part in the Clicker demonstration with her young dog Buddy and Angie joined us for the second year with Skye. Thanks to all those who represented our Club and helped out on the day setting up the arena and the sound system and took photos. A reminder that our Club competitions will be held in July and during the coming weeks there will be a list of exercises we will be judged on, so there will be plenty of time for training. If you have any questions please see Diane. Flyball members Danielle with Tia, Jenny with Pippa, Kylie with Ash and Jackie and myself with Wizz and Mikki competed at the Canberra Show last weekend. We had a fun time, and congratulations to those team members who achieved places in several of the Divisions. Tazzie was a great crowd pleaser in the flyball demonstrations on the Friday of the Show. See Tazzie in actionhttps:// &set=o &type=2&theater The Milton Show is on 28 th Feb and 1 st March and we will be holding a fun agility competition on the Saturday. On Friday the demo team will be in the dog show area on the eastern side of the Showground, at about 1 pm and Saturday the Dog Breed Show will be on in that area as well. Please come along and support our Club, or compete on these days. Happy and successful training. Regards President Rosie Milton

3 MUDTC Newsletter Page 3 of 6 IF TRAINING IS CANCELLED DUE TO WET WEATHER IT WILL BE ANNOUNCED ON 2ST & POWER FM THERE WILL BE A NOTICE ON OUR WEB SITE FACEBOOK PAGE AND MEMBERS WILL RECEIVE AN AGM The Club s Annual General Meeting is on Sunday 16 March at 10.30am, following training, and all members are encouraged to attend. All positions are declared vacant at the AGM and election of office bearers for the coming year takes place. A position nomination form is included in this Newsletter. An information sheet about the various positions is available at the Clubhouse if you would like to view it, or please speak to your instructor or any committee member if you would like more information. The Club holds management committee meetings once a month, usually on the second Sunday after training. Any member is very welcome to attend these meetings, or if you have a matter you would like discussed, and can t attend a meeting, please talk to your Instructor, or a Committee member, or send a message via to info@mudtc.org.au Club Championship Each year the Club has a Championship competition day open to any Club member. Separate competitions are held on the same day for advanced and less advanced dogs. Advanced dogs and their handlers compete in the Open Championship for the Lyn Brookes and Marion Mann Trophies, and less advanced dogs compete in Novice Championship for the President s Trophy. It is planned to hold the Championships during July and the date and full details of the exercises will be available as soon as possible. Both Open and Novice will include a compulsory heeling pattern, on lead in Novice and off lead in Open. A heeling pattern includes sit, drop, stand exercises as well as turns, plus a figure 8 in Open. A separate Club Agility Championship, when members compete for the Tessa Rudd and Penny Cullen Trophies is held over 4 Sundays during the year. Understanding your dog s body language is important, here is a simple diagram which gives a few examples
4 MUDTC Newsletter Page 4 of 6 Please don t take your dog with you when you pay at the Clubhouse counter as it can get very congested. If you have the correct change, or want to prepay for lessons, you can pay Margaret or Tracey at the New Beginners Table. Problem Classes Last Sunday, Instructor Natalie held the first of a series of classes to look at specific problems. The first session was on guarding and Natalie gave us some very useful tips on how to avoid your dog guarding his food bowl, or a favourite toy. The Club is very grateful to Natalie for this initiative. If members would like more of these sessions on any dog behaviour problems, please speak to Natalie or your class instructor. Never let the lead tighten as this simply ends up as a tug-of-war and the pup will pay even less attention to you. Use your focus word & treat liberally when the pup loosens the lead use plenty of treats or a toy motivator during training. To make come when called worthwhile for your pup never use an angry or scolding voice to call your pup, make returning to you a fun game and very rewarding, make yourself the best thing since sliced bread in your pup s eyes, use exciting and very tasty treats for this exercise. Remember there are many, many fascinating things over there and what you have has to be of greater value to the pup. The bottom line is that all early training must be happy, great fun and offer a greater reward that whatever else is in the pup s immediate environment. A noisy, busy environment makes it even harder for the pup to concentrate on you. So start your training at home and progress slowly to places where things are happening. Extract from Yaps & Yelps Journal NSDTC Training Your Puppy To get and keep their attention YOU have to be more exciting and interesting than anything else in the world around your pup, regularly practise the watch exercise you learned in class. Click and reward with treats and praise as soon as your pup looks at you always use a happy and enthusiastic voice tone when talking to and praising your pup, make training fun - bounce around, run for a couple of steps, clap your hands, generally be a bit silly & light-hearted during early training. So Cute!
5 MUDTC Newsletter Page 5 of 6 MEMBERS CORNER No Training Classes Sunday 2 March WANTED Members to join the Club s demo team. Quiet dogs for meet and greet at Sarah Claydon, and Dogs for event demonstrations Practice held at 8am on Tuesday mornings at the Showground Welcome A very warm welcome to our new members, we hope you enjoy being a member of the Club. It was a record enrolment day on 2 February. Welcome back also to our existing members and their dogs, great to see you all again. Photo Shoot 23 March Members of the Bay & Basin Camera Club will confirm later this month their attendance at training on Sunday 23 March for a Pet Portrait and Pets in Action day. We will be given a disc with a copy of the photos and these will be made available to members. More information will be provided at announcements on Sunday mornings. Farewell Sadly Belinda s terrier Candy succumbed to a snake bite earlier this month, and Mark s pensioner Jack a cross Maltese was put to sleep at the grand age of 15 years. Thinking of you. Sunday Program Please arrive early so you can socialise your dog and be ready to line up for announcements at 8.45am as classes commence right on 9am. Agility classes are held from 9am to 10am, although this year they may not be held on every Sunday. Please check with President Rosie to see if your dog is eligible for agility. An agility course is set up from 7.30am for advanced handlers. Fly ball classes are now being held from 10am to 11am, when instructors are available. ADAA Agility Competition Our Club will run its second Australian Dog Agility Association event in August this year. The competition is run in Milton so it gives everyone an opportunity to either compete, or go along to watch the dogs in action, without having to travel. Our first event last year was a brilliant success, thanks to Jenny Marshall s fantastic organization. It is great to see Jenny back at training again with her new Kelpie puppy, Keeper.
