Many thanks to Lorna Coloccia who has volunteered to produce and disseminate the newsletter for our club on a quarterly basis. The newsletter will be sent to you by and posted on our website, moversandshakers.org We are working on more activity involvement as a club. We are not asking you for any commitment outside your comfort, but we will be asking what you would like to do with your dog through a questionnaire. Hopefully, we will be able to select from your choices some fun events that you suggest as well as some educational workshops and seminars. Someone once asked, why would I join a club just because I have the same kind of dog as everyone in that club? I have often thought of how I might have answered that question. I don t know. Finally, it occurs to me that the answer may just be the same answer as why did the chicken cross the road? Of course, it is to get to the other side. Being part of a club of PWD owners helps get me to the other side of that road I may be trying to cross. Many times I have thought that my dogs had unique or special problems. Turns out, lots of PWDs do that or this or this and that. We may be a little similar in our uniqueness. With compassionate help from other owners, I can connect and move on to the next challenge in each of my three dogs lives which will most likely be somewhere on the other side of the road from here. I am looking forward to another great water season with hopefully some brags after the trial.. Jill Birthday Bash & Grooming Demonstration 20 Membership All clubs need active and willing members to participate in club events and enjoy their PWD s has set a recent milestone with increases in membership and participation in our 1st major club event THE SPRING SUPPORTED ENTRY Everyone had a terrific time watching some of the best dogs in the nation compete in all venues The membership meeting was also very well attended. 2 2 Supported Entry Weekend in Review The Portuguese Water Dogs took Concord North Carolina by Storm this year with a record entry in all venues. Cabarrus Arena is a beautiful facility offering a 4 day show hosted by Two All Breed Clubs service both North and South Carolina. The Breed Ring was dominated by the Westminster BOB winner CH Eureka Timberoak Surreal This beautiful girl should be the #1 PWD now after the 4 day cluster Congrats! The classes were dominated in DOGS by Liz Volz and her beautiful boy s Gremlin & Renzi Best of Winners for all 3 days when they were entered. Lovely to have LIZ and Benny make the trip all the way from Connecticut. They also took Winners Bitch (5pt major) with Arianna (coowned with Robin and Greg Illchuk). Our very own Sandy Christy was thrilled to add CH to the name of the beautiful girl Ceira. The Sweepstakes judge was Breeder Renee Reiherzer (DeLeao PWD s) She did a wonderful job and selected Aviators Freebird@ Blackwater as Best Puppy in Sweeps owned by Sarah & John Brock from Georgia. Jill & Dan Flebotte owned the Veteran Sweepstakes Winner GCH Cove s End St Elmo s Fire. Congratulations to one and all Special Thanks to our Chair Person CONNIE REGO for her hard work in making this show a major success! Connie and her boy Ruebin also did well in the Obedience Ring! As usual, we were well represented in the AGILITY Venue with many of our great PWD s having qualifying runs! PLATINUM BREEDER OF MERIT Dr. Linda Fowler The first NAUTIQUE PWD litter (14 pups) was born in Linda has behind many of the top PWD s in the breed and continues to serve as one of our Breeder/ Judges. Her nomination and selection to be on the judging panel for her 4th National Specialty in 2019 sets her apart as someone very special. She is a true treasure, mentor, friend and colleague to all people in the breed and she is also one of the greatest lovers and protectors of our dogs and all they should be.

3 3 Website If you missed the Know Your Board game beginning in January extending through the general membership meeting of March 31, 2018, you might want to look at it. It s on the website and you can get to know the officers and board members. Also, on the website is a special place for Brags. If you and/or your dog have any achievements, awards, accomplishments that you would like to share with the membership or the internet world, please Jennifer at jmwenk@jenniferwenk.com and let her know what it is. Almost anything that your dog does in any venue is brag worthy. All you have to do is tell Jennifer and the world of the Movers and Shakers will know. Our Club WEBSITE is a focal point for all official communication. It is where the WATER TRIAL PREMIUM List can be accessed, pictures, videos of past events are posted and official documents can be viewed as well as the Very Important CLUB ROSTER. In order to view the club roster you must have a password and id. The 2018 Roster contains all the s and PWD Names for each owner and it is NOW AVAILABLE for you to view and/or print. It is super easy to obtain am ID and PASS- WORD by just submitting an online request from the WEB- SITE. Facebook JOIN the Movers and Shakers PWD Group The Movers and Shakers Facebook Group is a closed group on facebook and you are invited to join! As a group member you are encouraged to post information you would like to share with fellow club members. 6 6 Summary of Movers & Shakers General Membership Meeting March 31, 2018 J. Flebotte, President, called the meeting, in conjunction with the Supported Entry at the Cabarrus Arena in Concord, NC to order at 3:05 PM. The previous meeting minutes from the November 28, 2017 were distributed for review to the Membership prior to the meeting. PRESIDENT S REPORT J. Flebotte reviewed the concept of the Know Your Officers & Board Quiz which was offered to our Membership on the website. Only one member entered, and she is the award winner. In order for all to participate, she conducted an interactive presentation of the information with prizes, etc. VICE PRESIDENT S REPORT Not Present No Report SECRETARY S REPORT/ MEMBERSHIP L. Fowler reported that so far this year we have increased our Membership to over 70. Over $1000 has been donated to the Trophy Fund. The new Members present, Greg and Robin Ilchuk, were introduced. TREASURER S REPORT J. Flebotte reported that the Club has $ in the checking account and $22, in the money market/savings account. COMMITTEE REPORT S The success of the Supported Entry was reviewed by C. Rego. She shared with the group that if we want another Supported Entry next year, they need to appoint a new Chair and decide on a site. The Club thanked her for her efforts as Chair. Work for this event next year needs to begin in October. S. Melson submitted a Water Trial report which was read to the attendees (see attached) that reviewed the progress on the planning. J. Flebotte also informed that we have re-introduced the concept of a Water Committee, to assist in the operations of our Trials. Committee membership is: Pam Fowler Chair, Marcia Bingham, Cristi Wetherholt, Need a new member to volunteer?, Water Trial Chair, Water Trial Secretary C. Rego has volunteered to conducted our Sunshine activities. She reminded Members to report known life events illnesses/family deaths/ etc., as well as dogs passings, so that the Club can acknowledge appropriately. OLD BUSINESS C. Rego distributed the STAR awards to the qualifying Members. She also queried as to whether continuing on with this type of award or exploring other options. J. Flebotte announced that under the Awards Section of the website, we will also be posting Brags. J. Flebotte reviewed the new fund raiser the Club participated in last October PETS FOR VETS. Details, pictures, etc. can be reviewed on our website. Louise Mowbray also introduced a new program in the area for inmate trainers. The club will need to get more information in the future. NEW BUSINESS & ANNOUNCEMENTS J. Flebotte announced that the April/May Water Workshop filled by January 1. The Board unanimously selected Sandy Melson as the 2017 recipient of Member of the Year Martha Ruskai announced that she is working with the Courier as an article reviewer. The meeting was adjourned at 3:55 PM The next face-to-face meeting will be held in July in conjunction with our Water Trial. However, there might be a need for a teleconference meeting during the Second Quarter. Attendance: 22 Members

9 9 STAR Awards Program Congratulations to all of our 2017 STAR AWARD receipents! Our PWD s love to work and we celebrate their accomplishments (not to mention their owners hard work). The Movers and Shakers has a STAR award program for all dogs who attained a new AKC/ PWDCA (only) title(s) for a calendar year. Eligible members must have renewed membership for the year prior to the deadline or joined the Club prior to April 1 of the year of the award. Eligible dogs must be owned by and reside with the member. The award will be printed with the dog s call name, the new title(s), and the year up to 18 characters - TOTAL, (which includes 4 for the year). If the dog received more than one title you can include it, but not to exceed the specified number of characters. Please list only AKC/PWDCA titles. 11 11 READY..SET...GET WET Tips fro m Judy Murray Winter is officially Over and we are all anxious to start working our dogs in the water. Judy has offered her insights on how we can be more successful this summer and enjoy our time working our dogs. She views Training as the key to Success in anything but especially water work. Good training includes being positive and excited and provide the dogs with detractions so they do not get bored or tired. The use of the famous purple heads are well know in the Delmarva Water Training site. Obedience commands (Sit and Come) are essential for water work. Because Judy is not equipped with 3 arms, she uses cheese and hot dogs because they can go in your mouth as treats for the dogs. Milk Bones are used to encourage jumping off the boat since they FLOAT! Another key factor is to introduce puppies early to the water Judy recommends carrying them into the water and letting them paddle. Training Routine the Week before a TRIAL RANDOMIZE Treats Do not Treat every little thing Fewer treats in the week before a trial Do NOT Over Work the DOG with too many Repetitions If the Dog does it right ONCE - STOP and move to the next exercise Repeat an exercise only if it was not performed correctly When traveling to work in the water people tend to OVER WORK the dog Early in the season - Go Slower with shorter swim distances. Do not expect a complete run through conditioning takes some time PLAY and MOTIVATE it is a Partnership and built on respect and fun Review the RULES (especially Apprentice) Handlers are often at fault for not understand ing the rules (touching the dog, crossing the 3 ft line etc) Dog Management on the TRIAL WEEKEND Keep the routine the same warm up the same Feed the same as your normal schedule Use FANS and COOL MATS (I do not recommend ICE) Get yourself and your dog wet on hot days (as allowed by the on site judge) CRATE you dog to allow adequate rest (physical and emotional)

12 MEMBER OF THE YEAR SANDY MELSON Once upon a time, our family wanted to get a dog. I wanted a little non-shedding dog, my husband wanted a big dog who would play in the lake, and my son just wanted a puppy. My husband called from work one day to say someone had brought a Portuguese Water Dog to the office, and it was the perfect breed for us. I did some hunting on the internet and found a breeder close by who knew of a litter on the Northern Neck. Before she would give me Jan Mosher s name, she wanted to come by and visit. I had no idea at the time we were being scrutinized and vetted. I guess we passed the test contact Jan and Norm of eight, but Jan said she for one who was very speher with a family who forget the next words that show her. I had never kind. Ol Salt Sandpiper by the was at her first dog show at Comer and Jan kept telling Mejias was handling her, as we were when she won my, the puppy won! I didwere all puppies. Two of her puppies became grand champions, and many have other titles. We went on to host water camps at our home since Ken and I have made wonderful friendships because of our work with this breed. This breed has given me dogs that are a tremendous joy and comfort. I have some of the most endearing memories because of this breed. We all look back on how this breed changed our lives, but I am not sure anyone s life has been changed more than mine because of this breed. 13 13 Water Manual Changes New WWDX Certificate This is a new, optional certificate (not title). WWDX is not required for persons to move on to CWD. Anyone that already has obtained a WWD title more than 30 days before your trial will be considered a non-regular entry. This certificate is not retroactive, therefore anyone who has already passed WWD more than once will still need to pass two times (for a total of 3 passes under 2 judges and at 2 sites) before they earn WWDX. Because WWDX is a certificate and not a title, only "WWD" may be used in the dog's official title. Grievances We have also made changes to the Grievance process (including a new Witness Form and an updated Grievance Form). The new rules require grievances to be filed on the day of the trial----no later than one hour after the conclusion of judging for the day. You will also need to have at least 3 Host Committee members on the site for the entire time of the trial, up to one hour after the conclusion of judging, in case a grievance is filed. Grievances pertaining to anything that occurs on an official practice day immediately preceding a trial must be filed on the first official trial day of the weekend. In the case of any grievances or aggression incidents, please DO NOT modify the online forms in any way. If something does not apply, simply state "N/A " on the form. JUDGES The Board has approved updated requirements for anyone wishing to become a new water trial judge. Going forward, potential new judges will be required to perform their observational and provisional assignments under a "Supervisory" judge. The updated judge's list is available on the PWDCA website. Anyone with ** next to their name is designated as a Supervisory Judge. There is also a new application form that the prospective judge needs to complete, as well as questionnaires for observational, provisional, and supervisory judges to complete that should be submitted with your trial report. Should you get a request from someone to do an Observational or Provisional Assignment, please made sure to review the new requirements. Also, please note that Charles White has retired from judging; we were very fortunate to have him judge so many of us and we wish him the best as he plans to spend more time training his dogs.

21 21 PAGE 21 MAY 2018 Fruit and Yogurt Popsicles Yogurt is packed with both calcium and protein, so it makes a great base for puppy popsicles. Mix in some fresh berries, such as strawberries and blueberries, which are packed with vitamins, and you ll have a healthy treat for your pet in no time. Ingredients 1 cup plain non-fat yogurt ¼ cup fresh blueberries 2 cups fresh strawberries 1 banana, peeled and cut into chunks 1/2 of a peeled cucumber Directions 1. Place all ingredients in blender and blend until smooth. 2. Pour into ice cube trays and freeze. 3. Serve to your dog.
