Andy has built some bird cages for use at club events that use a lot of birds. We will store them in the club trailer. They have a drop shute to load them into a bird bag with less stress to the birds and escapes. Food and water containers can be put in them to keep the birds healthy until they are released. After the meal, the meeting was called to order by President, Sam Thompson. The club would like to thank Sam Thompson for serving as club President for the past 2 years. Also, we would like to congratulate our new President, Andy Lewandowski, and our new 1st Vice- President (field trials), Rich Lamb. 3 P A GE 3 The Dog-Gone News G.M.B.C. FUN FIELD TRIAL SATURDAY FEBRUARY 26, 2011 OTTAWA FIELD TRIAL GROUNDS STARTING AT 8:30 A.M. Come join us at the Greater Milwaukee Brittany Club Fun Trial. This is a great opportunity to meet other club members and exercise the dogs. We will be starting at 8:30 A.M. DIAPER DERBY - For puppies under 6 months of age. Firing blanks is not required or encouraged PUPPY - For puppies 6-15 months. Blanks fired if bird contact is made. SHOOTING DOGS - For dogs 6 months and older. The dog must give a finished performance, point staunchly, and be steady to wing and shot. DERBY - For dogs 6-24 months of age. The derby dog must establish point, but is not judged for steadiness to wing and shot. Blanks fired if bird contact is made. HUNTING DOG - For dogs 6 months and older who DO NOT have an adult AKC placement. The hunting dog must establish and hold point until the handler flushes the bird(s). Steadiness to wing and shot is not required. SENIOR DOG - This is a 10 year or older dog stake. It is to be judged on the dog s ability to hunt, handle and point birds. ENTRY FEES - All stakes are $10.00 per dog, except diaper derby, which is $ birds will be provided in all stakes. (If trial becomes a training session, fee will remain the same to cover the cost of birds.) Contact Chris Sennott at or CGSENNOTT@COMCAST.NET to register or if you have questions. Please register early so we can plan for the number of birds to purchase. However, don t stay home because you forgot to register - we ll register you at the trial. If you would like to bring a salad or desert, we would greatly appreciate it.

On Jan.15th & 16th, Petey passed 3 out of 4 UKC Novice Obedience trials for his UKC CD title at Car Dun AL dog training Club in Huntley, IL. Actually, Petey passed 4 out of 4. I was the one that failed us in one trial by telling him down too many times on the long down honor. So, technically, I failed us. We ll see if we can break his record of 7 titles in one year, as we are off to a GREAT start! The 2011 American Brittany Club Summer Specialty, hosted by the GMBC this coming summer, is now collecting trophy donations. To sponsor an entire class (1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd & 4 th place) is $ I am the Event Planner and our Show Committee is Julie Asmus, Debbie Lewandowski, and Jeff Jarmuskiewicz. Debbie Jagielski is the 2 nd VP. Tom and her are chairing the July 2, 2011 big event. Also, Debbie J. will be in charge of the July 1, 2011 GMBC Specialty Show and the Raffle. We cannot hold a raffle on the day of the ABC Specialty (July 2, 2011) because the American Brittany Rescue has its Raffle that day. On Sunday, we plan on holding a $50/$50 raffle. I can t tell you how excited we are, as a committee, about having our GMBC host this extremely important National Event! 17th Annual Spring (Obedience) Fun Match on Saturday, April 2, 2011 Held at the Kennal Club of Fort Atkinson, WI Details will be posted in March s Dog Gone News! 6 P AGE 6 A Hunter s Dreamland (The events in this story are not fictional. Names have been eliminated to protect those involved.) The Dog-Gone News Twas the 10 th of December and they were headed for South Dakota. Normally they would have been there and back weeks ago, but health reasons delayed their annual trip. They would be hunting the first few days like they always did - a man, his wife and their dogs. Their South Dakota friends three boys were all grown and moved away; so they won t be joining in as they have for the last 15 years. The boys tolerated hunting with them; following dogs around, instead of driving the fields and posting shooters. At times, they left the dogs in the car and did it the local s way. The first day of hunting brought frigid temperatures along with mph winds. The man hunted; the wife drove the car. She picked him up at the other end of the ditch, field, slough, etc. The man appreciated not having to walk back to the car; getting into a warm vehicle wasn t so bad either. The dogs didn t care. In spite of the weather, the man got two birds. The wife told him that he didn t have permission to shoot her birds for the day and that she would make it up during the week. They laughed. She hadn t been alive long enough to be ready for that. The all-age dog passed her by and tackled the bird from behind. His momentum slid him across the ice about 8 feet. You could see him put on the brakes to go back for the bird. The two dogs retrieved the bird together. The men also got a covey of skunks, four in all. Two escaped. This happened right in the spot they were headed to hunt. They hunted the field from the opposite end and after a short hunt they smelled the familiar odor coming from an abandoned barn. They decided it was time to quit for the day and then headed for the lodge to do what hunters do at the end of the day. The second day was cold but calmer. Five minutes into the first field, the all-age dog ran behind a deadfall and did not reappear. The man and his wife headed in the all-age dog s direction and found him pointing - his eyes riveted on the direction of the scent. The man shot the bird, and the dog retrieved it, after making sure it was dead. You know - the death grip! They got five birds that day and five the next. On day four, the couple met their friend to hunt a huge operation that also provided a house for lodging. Even though they shot birds off of it, the birds weren t there in the numbers anticipated. This was mainly due to the flooding, now iced over, which had obliterated the cover. They hunted there for two days. In one spot, the five year-old locked up and only the wife was around. At first she stepped on the bird. It was buried deep; she kicked it three times before it flew. It flew low and just in front of the traveling dog until it was out of shooting range. Dirty bird! That was no first year pheasant! In another spot, they hunted with the all-age dog and the friend s nine month old puppy. A pheasant that was only winged landed on an ice pond and started running. Both dogs ran after it. The fully exposed running rooster caused the puppy to hesitate. The next morning, they dined at the local eating place. The waitress told them where they could get permission to hunt, that they were lousy with birds. The group was heading to one of their usual spots when the friend suddenly pulled over on Main Street and parked in front of the Bank. The couple was puzzled when their friend brought out his camera and entered the Bank.

7 P AGE 7 The Dog-Gone News They thought he would be arrested for planning a heist. Then they saw the signs in the windows Remington and Federal. They now realized that the bank was currently the sporting goods store. They joked around about guns and banks and soon they were taking pictures of guns in front of the bank. Before long, the clerk, who had tried to sell the friend a gun, joined them in front of the bank, with the gun, and an offer. You can t do this in France. On day six, the threesome headed back to the previous-days hunting spots. Both men had good places to hunt in that area. The number of birds stunned the dogs into steadiness. The eight and nine year-olds were flawless; doing it all without command. The next day, the group hunted in places where the snow was completely beaten down with bird tracks. Hundreds went up at a time. Not much got pointed; but boy, oh boy, was there shooting and missing! The first challenge was trying to decide which bird to shoot. When one did get dropped, it took awhile for the scent of the departed birds to dissipate before the dog could zero in on the wounded or dead bird. There were some tremendous tracking situations where one doubted the dog was on the right bird, but they persisted and were rewarded with the retrieve and many good boys and girls remarks and pictures! The wife shot her limit that day; a first for her. Two of the birds were shot over the all-age dog. One was tracked by the friends older dog since she was closer - you can t lose any time with these birds. With that one in the vest, the older dog went off on another successful mission; this time tracking a sneaky run-a-way. The man became known as the pheasantator, as he was relentless in pursuing a downed bird. If he saw blood or evidence of a broken wing, he knew that bird would not survive. At one of the new hunting spots, the landowner said Shoot them all, we have too many. The hunters got the message that the locals do not have a high regard for pheasants like the hunters do. The friend chose this spot to hunt his puppy because he wanted to get her on a lot of birds.

8 P AGE 8 The Dog-Gone News Now let it be known that this pup will hold point for you to flush and shoot; but these birds were flushing wild and she tried to catch them all. Her very patient owner walked in her direction, as she was wearing a Garmin. At one point, the owner doubted that it was working properly since she appeared to be at opposite ends of the compass on several occasions. It was clear he would not catch up with her while on foot. So, they all got into the car and drove in her direction. When the pup was spotted, one call of her name stopped her in her tracks. The pup looked back and forth several times - from her owner to the direction where the birds flew. Her face said didn t you see them? They went this way! Finally, she decided she needed this guy to feed her supper so she reluctantly came to the car where everyone told her she was a good girl. The group headed to the Yellowstone. They had one more day to hunt. It proved to be short as they were near their possession limit; but it was as exciting as any other. The almost three year-old and the five year-old recognized the competitor in each other; and boy, were they flying - each showing off their ground speed and drive. In short order, six birds were taken over the show offs. Sadly, the five day limit was reached before noon; and they all agreed it was one of the best hunts ever. The Dog-Gone News ACT 90 Puppy Mill Bill Update As you may know, ACT90, commonly known as the Puppy Mill Bill passed unanimously in late The advisory board, which I am a member of, met many times in approximately eight months to draft the minimal standards of care which is now ATCP 16. ATCP 16 relates to the licensing and regulation of dog dealers, breeders, dog breeding facilities, animal control facilities and animal shelters. The Agriculture, Trade & Consumer Protection Board held a hearing in November and with a few minor changes, approved ATCP 16 to move forward in the process. Presently, ATCP is before the Senate and Assembly. They have several options beyond passage of the Rules (ACTP 16) and we are waiting to see how they will choose to proceed. With so many new legislators in office, it is difficult to know what will happen but without the passage of ATCP16, the Bill (ACT90) has nothing enforceable. First, unless you sell at least 25 dogs, from more than 3 litters, a year, this bill will NOT affect you. Also, this does not affect you unless if you are a dog dealer who sells at least 25 dogs in a year that you did not breed and raise. I sincerely believe that anyone taking reasonable care of their dogs has nothing to fear from the Bill. I attended a large meeting with opinions ranging from stating it was common sense to the other opinion of not liking the Rules. But this was from a person who tethers (which is allowed) his dogs year round and boasts that he cleans and levels the dog area twice a year (no other cleanup) with a bobcat. He stated that he already gets complaints. I think it s fair to tell you that there is an active group who does not support the Bill. I believe they have that right but I have read and attended meetings where they give a very negative interpretation to the Rules which I believe builds fear and inaccurate information in the dog community. An example in the Rules states the dogs to have potable water free of contamination. Potable means drinkable. This group stated that by putting antibiotics in the water contaminated it and your dogs could be seized. These statements are absurd and totally without merit! I would prefer that people have the facts and then decide for themselves how they feel about the information. To that end, I will forward to anyone the entire document and you can let me know of any areas of concern. It s not difficult reading, just lengthy. Lately, the area of greatest concern is the PRIMARY ENCLOSURE sizes. This is about the floor space where the dog lives and there are two sets. One for dogs getting at least 30 minutes of exercise a day and the other for 120 minutes of exercise a day. What is proposed is minimally larger than what has been the USDA Regulations for at least 17 years. The opposition group is using fiberglass crate sizes as the acceptable floor space usage even though the crates are for transportation and temporary housing of dogs for the sizes given on the labels. It s not that crates can t be used; they just need to be of sufficient size for dogs living in them 23 hours a day. Again, I will forward the draft to anyone contacting me.
