4 GAUTENG ACCOMMODATIONS ACTIVITY1 A & B: READING PARAGRAPHS A Sipho looks at the mat close to the door of their house. On the mat sits a red cat. No, not one cat, but two cats. The one cat is big and the other one is small and it could be her baby. A baby cat is called a kitten. B As Sipho looks closer he can see it is not the kind of cat that he sees every day near their house in Soweto. This is a very special kind of cat, perhaps a wild cat. They look like the ones he saw during the Easter holidays near his mother s family farm in the Eastern Cape. These cats do not have any patterns on their reddish sand-coloured fur coats. They have long black tufts on the tips of their ears that exceed half the length of the ear. They are slender cats with long legs and a short tail. 5 Name of Learner: Grade: Surname of learner: Chronological age: years months CALCULATIONS FOR ACTIVITY 1 A: READING SPEED (See Manual page 5) Step 1: To calculate the reading rate or speed (Activity 1A), take the total number of words read by the learner in the passage and divide it by the number of seconds taken to read the passage. Multiply by 60 (because there are 60 seconds in a minute). This will give you the number of words per minute. Reading Speed: Number of words read 60 Total time to read passage (seconds) X 1 = words per minute Step 2: Consult the NORM TABLE ANNEXURE A for the READING PARAGRAHS (page 9 manual) to determine the reading age of the learner Reading Age = CALCULATIONS FOR ACTIVITY 1 B: READING ACCURACY (See Manual page 6) Step 1: To calculate the reading accuracy (Activity 1B), count all the words in the reading passage. Calculate all the errors that the learner made. Take the total number of words read and subtract the number of errors to get the total number of words correctly read.
