1 Teacher Guide Teacher Answer Key and Kentucky Core Academic Standards for RPA 1 Grade 3 The Grade 3 Reading Proficiency Assessment consists of twelve Multiple Choice Questions and one Short Answer Question. Remind students that they are to record their answers on the Student Answer Sheet only, except for the Short Answer Question, which will be written on this packet. Before Administering the Assessment Print all Student Answer Sheets and test booklets according to CASCADE directions. Copy the student pages. IMPORTANT: Use photo setting or print and photo setting and do NOT make photocopies of photocopies so that the students will be able to see the pictures clearly enough to answer questions. Arrange for accommodations for ECE and ESL students as indicated on the IEP or PSP. Directions for Administering the Assessment Explain to the students that this assessment will help determine what they know now. Encourage students to do their best. Remind students of appropriate test-taking procedures. They should answer EVERY question and leave no blanks. If they are unsure of an answer, they should determine a best guess. Review how to record answers on the scan form. Distribute assessment material and review directions. Monitor students during the assessment. When finished, test booklets should be collected and students should work on other material until all have completed the assessment. Collect student answer sheets and check for stray marks before scanning. After Administering the Assessment Score the Short Answer Question. Scan student answer sheets in the LEXMARK Scanner according to directions. Analyze the data from the CASCADE reports. Results should be used to determine what next instructional steps are needed to move students toward attainment of reading standards. Student assessment materials should be collected and not sent home. The assessment materials must be kept secure in order to be used for future assessments. 3rd Grade RPA #1 1

SAQ possible answers/look-fors: Bao Han realized that his father was right about the old horse still being useful. He realized this after the old horse found the way safely home during a snowstorm. The old horse had been on this same journey many times and knew the path home, even if it was snowing and hard to see where you were going. 6 Grade 3 RPA1 Physical Features Loggerhead Sea Turtles Adapted by JCPS 1 Loggerhead sea turtles are amazing to watch. They have a heart-shaped shell that is over two feet long. The color of the shell is reddish brown. The shell is hard so that it can protect the turtles soft bodies. Loggerheads have a large head and their mouths are very strong. They are very good swimmers because they have strong flippers. Nesting 2 Loggerhead turtles live in the ocean. The turtles come onto land in order to lay eggs and build nests in the sand. They return to the same beach where they were born to lay their eggs. Each turtle lays over 100 eggs in its nest. After the loggerhead turtles cover them with sand for protection, they return to the sea. The eggs are left on their own. The Eggs Hatch 3 The turtle eggs are white and about the size of a golf ball. It takes two months for the eggs to begin hatching. The baby turtles have a sharp tooth that helps them break out. Next, it takes several days for the babies to dig out of the nest. Once they are out of the nest, they race to the ocean. The ocean is a long way from the nest. It is a hard journey for the baby loggerheads because many are eaten by sea gulls or crabs. An Open Ocean 4 The baby turtles that make it to the ocean swim for miles and miles until they reach the Gulf Stream. The Gulf Stream is a large flow of warm water in the Atlantic Ocean. It forms an area known as the Sargasso Sea. There are a lot of algae, called sargassum, living there. Young loggerhead turtles stay in the Sargasso Sea for ten years because they can eat the algae. Shallow Waters A Loggerhead sea turtle uses strong flippers when swimming. 5 After about ten years in the Gulf Stream, the loggerheads move to water that is not very deep, called the shallows. In the shallows, the turtles feed on crab, shrimp, and jellyfish. The food is easy to find there. Therefore, the young turtles spend another ten years or more in the

7 RPA 1: Grade 3 shallow waters eating and growing bigger. The loggerheads mate there and then go back to the beach where they were born, to nest and lay their own eggs. Volunteers Help 6 A group of volunteers, or people who work without pay, got together about five years ago to help protect the sea turtles. They did this because the number of living sea turtles was getting smaller and smaller. The volunteers take turns guarding the beach to keep poachers (people who break the law by hunting wild animals) from killing the female turtles as they come to lay their eggs. They also watch the nests all night to make sure the eggs and the baby turtles are not harmed. 7 The volunteers want to keep these turtles alive because they been on Earth for thousands of years. They don't want the turtles to die out. They feel wonderful and know their work has been successful when they watch the babies dig out of the sand and run to the ocean. 9 Grade 3 RPA1 A Chinese Fable: The Old Horse Knows the Way by Heidi Chang 1 Bao Han s family lived on a farm in the countryside. Every year before winter, Bao Han and his father journeyed to the city. They sold rice to the shopkeepers. 2 Father, must we bring the old horse this time? Bao Han asked. He had just finished loading the bags of rice onto the wagon. We do much better with just the young horse. 3 No, we will bring the old horse, too, his father said. He has made this journey with me longer than you have. It would not be right without him. Bao Han thought his father was unreasonable but put a harness on the old horse, too. 4 It is early to be so cold, Bao Han s father said. I hope we do not have problems with the weather. I want to make it safely back home. 5 That is why we should only bring the young horse. He is the only one that can make it through a snowstorm, Bao Han said. Bao Han s father did not answer. He just gave the reins a good shake, and both of the horses started down the road. 6 When Bao Han and his father finally arrived at the city gates, the sky had turned gray. 7 This is not good, his father said, as they began to unload their bags at the store. I think it s going to snow. They knew they had to get home as soon as possible. Bao Han still believed it was a mistake to bring the old horse. 8 By sundown the snow was falling hard. Bao Han and his father could no longer see the road. They wandered for hours. 9 Father, I think we are lost, Bao Han said. What shall we do? 10 Untie the young horse and tie him to the back of the wagon.

10 RPA 1: Grade 3 11 What? He is the only one strong enough to get us through the snow! 12 Do as I say! Then get in the back and lie under the blanket. Bao Han did as his father said. Now only the old horse was pulling the wagon. 13 Go to sleep. Tomorrow we will be home, his father said. Bao Han did not see how that was possible. But the blanket was warm, and he fell asleep. 14 The next morning, Bao Han awoke to hear his father calling him. He quickly sat up. It had stopped snowing. They were home! Father, how did you know which way to go? he asked, surprised. 15 I didn t, he smiled. It was the old horse. He knew the way. 16 Now Bao Han understood why the old horse meant so much to his father.
