1 What the Teacher Needs to Know about Feature H: Other Long Vowel Patterns (Description pp , Word Lists pp , , 213) Although new vowel patterns are introduced throughout the study of this feature, students return to previously learned vowel patterns for purposes of making comparisons and to reinforce their understanding of those patterns. This is in contrast to more traditional approaches to spelling in which students learn about one pattern one week, then move on to another pattern the next week but do not revisit previously learned patterns. The order of the vowels you study can vary. It is not necessary to start with a then move to e, i, o and finally u. The e sorts can be especially challenging since there are two ways to spell the short e sound. For the final e sort (e, ee, ea, short ea,?), have students sort first by sound, then by pattern, and finally by sound and pattern.
