1 Push-In and Connect Key Events START: Read 1 Guide for Repeated Interactive Read-Alouds Corduroy Lost and Found By: Don Freeman Push-In Story Problem Target Vocabulary Read 1: STATE STATE: Show cover illustration and identify title and author. The title of the book is Corduroy Lost and Found and the author, or the person who wrote the story, is Don Freeman. STATE: Purpose of Read 1 This is Corduroy (cover). It looks like Corduroy is happy and is looking at the large, full moon. I wonder why Corduroy is happy observing the moon. Let s read and find out. Read 1: TEACH TEACH: Push-in story problem that s connected to the story purpose by using the think-aloud strategy (I wonder, I noticed, I was thinking.). Corduroy finds out that Lisa s birthday is soon and he wants to get her a special present. I wonder what Corduroy will get for her. TEACH: Push-in and connect key events that relate to the story problem. Page # Events Page # Previous Event/Explanation 2 Corduroy s ears perked right up when he heard that it was Lisa s birthday. 5 Corduroy slipped out of bed, crept through the apartment, and out into the hallway. 7 Corduroy thought Lisa might want a game for her birthday. 1 Lisa and her mother talk about Lisa s birthday on the bus ride. 4 Corduroy could not fall asleep because he worried about getting Lisa a present for her birthday. 7 Corduroy said the buttons inside the elevator were like a game. 2 8 Corduroy thought Lisa might want a rocket ship for her birthday. 11 Corduroy saw the present he wanted to give Lisa for her birthday: the biggest and prettiest balloon. 18 A woman asked Mr. Gonzales how much money Corduroy cost, but he said the bear was not for sale. 21 Corduroy was sad and sleepy. He fell asleep thinking about balloons and home. 25 Mr. Gonzales gave Corduroy and a large yellow lollipop to Lisa. 8 Corduroy said the elevator moved up like a rocket ship. 12 Corduroy could not catch Lisa s balloon; the big beautiful balloon kept evading Corduroy s grasp (front cover flap) A dog picked Corduroy up with his mouth. When a car drove by and a tall stack of newspapers were thrown on the sidewalk, the dog dropped Corduroy. Corduroy landed on the tall stack of newspapers and Mr. Gonzales found him and placed him on a shelf until the owner came to claim him Corduroy heard Mr. Gonzales tell the woman that Corduroy was lost and waiting to be found. Then he remembered Lisa and the balloon Lisa was putting signs up to look for Corduroy and she asked Mr. Gonzales if he would post a sign for her. TEACH: Push-in target vocabulary using PAT. STATE: Story Problem Corduroy finds out that Lisa s birthday is soon and he wants to get her a special present. I wonder what Corduroy will get for her. Read 2: TEACH TEACH: Push-in characters thoughts and feelings (as they connect to key events) that relate to the story problem. Page # Events Characters Thoughts and Feelings 1 Lisa held onto Corduroy so he would not fall. Corduroy is probably thinking about how Lisa cares for him and how much he likes to go places with her. 2 Corduroy s ears perked right up. I m thinking Corduroy s ears perked right up because he is worried or concerned that he does not have a present for her. He probably feels nervous because he doesn t know what to get her. 4-5 Corduroy was awake and Lisa had gone to bed. He is probably thinking, Oh no, I don t have present for Lisa. What am I going to do? I bet many thoughts are racing through his mind. Maybe I should sneak out of bed Page 5

6 7-8 Corduroy saw buttons in the elevator and then it went up and then down Corduroy saw the moon rising over the building. 12 Corduroy walked out of the lobby onto the sidewalk. 14 The dog dropped Corduroy on the sidewalk. 16 Mr. Gonzales placed Corduroy on a shelf Mr. Gonzales told a lady that Corduroy was lost. and go find a present for her. Hey look at all of these cool buttons; this looks like a game. I bet Lisa would like a game for her birthday. Ooh this feels funny, like I am moving upwards, kind of like a rocket ship. That s an idea, I wonder if Lisa would want a rocket ship for her birthday. Oh my goodness, that is the biggest most beautiful balloon I have ever seen. I know Lisa would love a big beautiful balloon. Ok, I am going to get that for her. This area looks very familiar, but something is different oh wait Lisa s balloon is getting away. I need to hurry and get it. What s going on? I m scared. Look, Corduroy has a very sad look on his face. I bet he is thinking he will never find his special friend, Lisa, again. Corduroy looks very worried. I m lost? Lisa must be very worried; I am scared. What s going to happen to me? Sometimes when things get lost, they are not found. Will that happen to me? Oh no I forgot about Lisa s present. I don t see the big beautiful balloon. What am I going to do? 21 Corduroy was sad and sleepy. Remember, he did not sleep all night. I bet he is exhausted or tired. I bet Lisa misses me, I know I miss her and I never got her the big yellow balloon. I hope she finds me soon. 22 Corduroy is waking up when he hears Hey I know that voice; its Lisa s voice. I hope she finds me. I knew she missed me. Lisa s voice. 27 Lisa and Corduroy are hugging. I am so happy to be back with Lisa. And all she wanted from me for her birthday was a hug. That is exactly what I want right now, too. I love my special friend Lisa. 9 Pull-Out Characters Feelings Key Events START: Read 3 Guide for Repeated Interactive Read-Alouds Corduroy Lost and Found By: Don Freeman Pull-Out Story Problem Target Vocabulary Read 3: STATE STATE: Show cover illustration and have the children recall the title and author. Remember, the title of the book is Corduroy Lost and Found and the author, or the person who wrote the story, is Don Freeman. STATE: Pull-out story problem. Corduroy wants to get Lisa a birthday present but gets lost. STATE: Purpose of Read 3 Remind children that Corduroy wanted to get a gift for Lisa but he couldn t find exactly what he wanted. However, Corduroy learned that he didn t have to get Lisa a present to let her know she was his special friend. Read 3: TEACH TEACH: Pull-out key events and characters thoughts and feelings. Read a few passages that prompt children to respond. Ask questions such as What is happening here? Then, connect character s feelings to that event, How do you think felt when that happened? Page # Possible Descriptions of Events Possible Descriptions of Characters Thoughts and Feelings 1-5 Corduroy found out it was Lisa s birthday. Instead of going to sleep that night, he went to find Lisa a present. 6-8 The elevator door opened, he saw all of the buttons inside the elevator, and he He loved Lisa so much he wanted to get her a special gift. That night he was so nervous that he couldn t sleep and decided to go get her a gift. He thought that elevator was big and bright; maybe he would find something in there to get Lisa. He saw the buttons and thought, Wow this looks like a game; she likes Page 9

10 felt the elevator move upwards Corduroy saw the present he was going to get Lisa, but it kept evading his grasp A dog grabs him and drops him when a stack of newspapers bounces onto the ground Mr. Gonzales tells a woman that Corduroy is not for sell; he is lost. He does not see the balloon anymore and falls asleep Corduroy recognized Lisa s voice. Mr. Gonzales saw Lisa s Lost Bear sign and handed Corduroy and a big yellow lollipop to Lisa. games. Maybe she wants a game. Then the elevator moved up, and he thought, This is cool; it is like a rocket ship. Maybe she wants a rocket ship. That is the perfect gift for Lisa. He has never seen such a big and beautiful balloon. Wait, it keeps getting away from me. Please let me get it. I really want Lisa to have the best gift. He is probably getting worried that he cannot grasp it. Maybe he is confused. There was so much commotion and everything is happening so quickly. sad and afraid, knowing that he is lost; worried that Lisa will not find him; heartbroken that he won t be with his special friend anymore He is concerned that he will not be home in time for Lisa s birthday. He was relieved when he heard Lisa s voice. Corduroy was reassured that Lisa missed him as much as he missed her. He was thankful to be back with Lisa and realized that being with and hugging Lisa was the best present for both of them. TEACH: Pull-out target vocabulary. Provide opportunities for children to use target vocabulary. Read 3: ASK ASK: The final why question leads to the main idea.
