1 What the Teacher Needs to Know about Feature C: Word Families and Short Vowels (Description pp , Word Lists pp ) Word families are groups of words that share the same rime, like -at. The 37 most common rimes are found on page 98 of Word Journeys. Words found within word families differ only in their onset (rat, sat). If this feature is examined by studying same vowel word families (at, an, ap), students can apply their knowledge of beginning and ending consonants studied in Feature A. If this feature is examined by studying word families with different vowels (ap, ip, op), students shift their focus to the short vowel sound. A combination of these two ways at looking at words should be used as you are working with your students on Feature C. For students to understand short vowels, have them isolate the vowel sound by separating one word element at a time. Example: fat at a pig ig i Make sure the students feel, see and hear the placement of their tongue, lips and mouth when saying the short vowel sounds.
