A Message from the Executive Director PHYSICAL & MENTAL HEALTH BENEFITS OF LIVING WITH PETS Decreases blood pressure Provides companionship Increases physical activity Increases oxytocin production Reduces minor health problems Reduces stress My dog has my back... He saved our marriage... She is my lifeline... We hear this from the veterans who have adopted from ARF. We ve witnessed first-hand the powerful bond between pets and veterans progress beyond simple affection and demonstrate magical healing powers. Matching veterans with pets is a natural development in our work, and we have been able to place more than 166 pets with military families in the past two years. We have heard heart-wrenching stories from veterans of perimeter checks during the middle of the night, emotional numbness, and many who sleep with guns under their pillows and incredible stories of the positive changes brought on by adopting a pet. Recently, a young veteran arrived at ARF to adopt a dog. He nervously scanned the adoption area to ensure his personal safety, afraid someone may jump out from one of the surrounding hallways to attack him. His fears were eased when we brought out Otto. The five-year-old pit bull mix went straight to him and licked his face: love at first sight. It s no surprise that Otto s presence soothes, but Otto and his veteran other benefits were unexpected. A pet can draw out even the most isolated personality and help traumatized veterans overcome emotional numbness. Training a dog can improve a veteran s ability to communicate and bond. Some participants report they are finally able to sleep, knowing a naturally alert ally is standing watch. Our follow-up report tells us Otto s unconditional love and companionship have all but erased our veteran s night terrors. PTSD is an anxiety disorder that can develop after experiencing a traumatic event. An estimated 20% of Americans will experience PTSD at some point in their lifetimes. That s 31.3 million people who are bombarded by intrusive thoughts, avoid people, places, and things, and experience hyper awareness. They may have nightmares, find that they are no longer close to people, and constantly feel on guard. ARF is unique in our role as an organization with depth of experience in both sheltering work and life-enriching programs connecting pets with those in disadvantaged circumstances. Researchers are accumulating evidence that bonding with dogs has biological effects, such as elevated levels of the hormone oxytocin. Oxytocin improves trust, the ability to interpret facial expressions, the overcoming of paranoia, and other pro-social effects the opposite of PTSD symptoms. I will never forget meeting Otto s veteran, whose forearm bears the tattooed names of his fallen comrades, or the day he arrived to take his new best friend home. He couldn t stop smiling as he held Otto s leash and it seemed that for a moment, all the world was right. We will continue to rescue those precious animals who have run out of time, and provide emotional support and companionship to those in need. We hope you will consider a gift this fall to help a pet not only heal and find a home, but also provide an antidote to isolation, a gateway to trust, and a catalyst for physical and emotional healing. Together, we can make the difference. People Rescuing Animals...Animals Rescuing People. Page 3 Fall 2015

Saving Lives Because of You... Many of the animals ARF helps are homeless, rescued from public shelters before they run out of time, needing our help to find them just the right homes. Others need help to stay with their loving guardians through our community outreach programs designed to keep families together through times of financial crisis. All have one thing in common: each was given a second chance because of you. You can help special animals like Abraham and Villie at arflife.org. Second Chances - Abraham Stop the car! The neighbor frantically waved her arms as she ran toward the sedan pulling out of the driveway. The distraught meows were barely audible over the noise from the engine, but it was clear something was terribly wrong. They searched, and finally spotted the small orange kitten trapped in the wheel well. Officers arrived to dismantle the front of the car to carefully free the badly injured kitten. Covered in grease and shaking, he looked up at his rescuers with eyes full of gratitude and let out a soft meow. Even after Abraham s dramatic rescue and emergency surgery to amputate his leg he still wasn t safe. A neverending stream of animals arriving every day at the public shelter made space scarce, until ARF s team arrived to rescue him for the second time. Safe at last at ARF, he was able to heal and captured the hearts of our staff - one of whom fell in love and couldn t resist making him part of her family! Together Forever - Villie The ARF Emergency Medical Fund not only provides high quality, affordable medical care for low-income residents of Contra Costa County - it keeps families together. When Michael noticed his beloved ARF dog, Villie, didn t seem quite like himself, he was able to bring him to ARF s Clinic for testing, which revealed that Villie had a manageable chronic disease. Michael and the Clinic staff were able to work together to outline a treatment plan for Villie, who is thriving. This meant the world to Michael, who adores his fawn-colored pup. My dog Villie has been a life saver and a valued part of our family for a decade, Michael says. While I m grateful for the help the EMF program provides, it s the trust, quality care, expertise, communication, and education from ARF that s given him a continually glorious life and made me the best possible dog owner. I am so appreciative of him and ARF every day. Not only did ARF help me rescue him, he rescued me. Abraham recovering at ARF Villie and Michael Page 4 Fall 2015

Connecting Hearts Burt Adopted July 2015 Burt was one of a litter of five puppies ARF rescued from a public animal shelter. Now center of attention in his new home, his family says: He s a cuddle bug. Full of energy! Crystal Adopted March 2015 Crystal has eased her way into our hearts. When she came to us she had a frightening story to tell. She had no fur on her back or belly, presumably having licked it all off under the stress of her ordeal (she was found stray before coming to ARF). She has not shared with us her story and we have agreed not to ask. She has been very busy growing in her new coat and she takes great pride in it. We tell her often what good work she is doing and how pretty she is! We have long been associated with ARF as a camper and knew when the time came that we would want to adopt from ARF. Thank you all for helping Crystal find us. She is a purrrfect fit! Rocket Adopted June 2015 When first bringing Rocket the kitten home, the biggest challenge was our dog Indy s adjustment to a new member of the family. After three days, they are now buddies. ARF is thrilled to be chosen by Diablo Magazine readers as Best Animal Shelter for Best of the East Bay 2015! Page 5 Fall 2015

Inspiring Learning Humane Education: Making the Connection The little girl stood at the back of her class, too nervous to come forward and pet the friendly dog with the rest of her classmates. Rosie relished the attention from the children as they stroked her soft ears, scratched her back, and even practiced shaking hands with her. You don t have to pet her if you re afraid, ARF s educator explained gently, taking the girl aside. Rosie was once scared of people, too! But she s learned that they re kind. Listening to Rosie s story how she was once abandoned, lonely, and scared and is now an ambassador of kindness the little girl realized Rosie had a story of her own, with feelings, and fears, just like her. Inching closer, she reached out to softly pat the speckled fur. Sensing her new friend s trepidation, Rosie gently licked her hand. A smile slowly spread across the girl s face. Not all children have learned empathy for animals or had the chance to experience a bond with a special dog or cat. ARF s humane education programs make these important connections and ignite a lifelong love for animals. Support ARF s humane education programs and make the world a kinder place, one child at a time. BEST. SUMMER. 8 One Cat Saves 31,000 Lives Foraging for food at the stadium, the tortoiseshell cat took a wrong turn and suddenly found herself on the field, surrounded by spectators and players in the middle of a televised A s game. Frightened by the roaring crowd, she tore across the baseball diamond, leaping at any means of escape and eluding players and umpires who tried to capture her. Exhausted and scared, she slinked toward the dugout where she hesitated at Tony La Russa s feet. Somehow, she must have known he would keep her safe. At that moment Evie chose Tony. He and his wife Elaine, animal lovers with many of their own at home, took responsibility for finding the little stray cat a home. They were dismayed to learn not a single animal shelter in the area could take her in and promise she wouldn t be euthanized. After her ordeal and dramatic rescue, Evie was left with no chance for survival. And so ARF began, motivated by one cat and carried out by a small group of dedicated people who cared. On May 7, ARF celebrated twenty five years since Evie s journey from scared stray to beloved family member and the more than 31,000 dogs and cats who have been saved as her legacy since that inspiring moment on the ballfield. Like Evie, every one of them has a story. Henry, rescued because the public shelter lacked the medical resources to treat the deep wound on his front leg, is healthy and enjoying life with his new family. Kisses, who once wandered the streets as a pregnant stray, is a beloved, oversized lap dog and her puppies are safe in homes of their own. And Jones, a shy kitten who was overlooked at the public shelter and nearly ran out of time, has flourished with the love of his new family who can t imagine their lives without him. This year marked the best year for adoptions in the organization s history. ARF found homes for a remarkable 2,601 dogs and cats, increasing adoptions 14% over the previ- Page 8 Fall 2015

One Cat Saves 31,000 Lives ous year s record without sacrificing quality of care. Every tail wag, kiss, and soft nuzzle is precious as we consider what their fates would have been if not for Evie, and for ARF s friends who make these rescues possible. Today, many dogs and cats like Evie are still waiting to be rescued. Imagine how your gift today could change their lives and keep them all SAFE. Foster for ARF and Watch Love Grow! Jake s Angel Jake; (inset) Karl and an ARF pup Page 10 Jake, a 9 year-old Aussie rescue, loves going to work with his dad in San Francisco. But one summer day, a contractor accidentally left a door open and Jake slipped out undetected. His guardians frantically combed the city for him, calling his name and asking everyone they met if they d spotted the brown and white pup with soulful eyes. Just as they began to fear the worst, their phone rang. Karl Perazzo, percussionist for Santana and a good friend of ARF s who can often be found playing in the All-Star Band at Stars to the Rescue, spotted a terrified Jake running down the freeway and immediately knew he had to help. He stopped the freeway traffic, chased Jake down, and was able to charm him into his car by calling, Hey buddy, wanna go for a walk? No thought to risk, Karl put his life on the line to rescue Jake. Once Jake was in the car and out of danger, Karl took him to the recording studio and placed a call to his family letting them know he was safe. You don t have to be a rockstar to make a difference in the life of an animal. Follow Karl s lead and make a difference now at arflife.org. Fall 2015

Letters to ARF - Pet Hug Pack Each year, thousands of children, seniors, veterans, and others in need experience the wet noses and unconditional love of ARF s renowned therapy animal team, the Pet Hug Pack. Bring the magic of animals to those who need it at arflife.org. Dear ARF, I wanted to share with you that I encountered a dog from your Pet Hug Pack, Thelma, at Kaiser the other day. My mother has been hospitalized there for two weeks as she fights a rare and aggressive type of cancer. Although she is sleeping a lot from her medication, the visit was great for my dad who is there with her every day. He lost his yellow Lab ten years ago and the visit took his mind off of everything for a brief moment where he could just focus on Thelma and have a conversation that wasn t about cancer, for once in a long while. It brings me comfort that other families like mine who are so worn from caring for their loved ones will also be sent four-legged angels to comfort them. Thanks for everything you and your team do. Stephanie B. Thelma A Poem for Maddie Pet Hug Pack makes friends everywhere they go! PHP dog Maddie recently celebrated her 9 th birthday, and was gifted a beautiful poem from Neil, a friend she d made from PHP s visits to Cal Berkeley. My favorite therapy dog Maddie is turning 9 today, She always makes the stress of midterms and finals go away. She loves sweet potatoes, belly rubs, and playing... chase, And when I pet and hold her she has a big smile on her face. She puts her paw on my heart to say I love you, And she gives me lots of kisses too. She is a gift to everyone she meets, And seeing her at the Pet Hugs events at Cal is a real treat. I have been missing her since the end of last semester, And look forward to seeing her in September. Happy 9 th birthday to a very special therapy pet, Whose unconditional love I will never forget. Neil and Maddie share a pet hug Page 11 Fall 2015
