your legacy could help us make a difference for dogs
a message from the chairman of the KCCT Dear Reader, Thank you for taking the time to read this legacy document, which tells you about the Kennel Club Charitable Trust, what it does, what it has achieved, and why it is so necessary. A dog s love is unconditional, and the comfort and joy they bring to people s lives is beyond measure. We depend on them for their loyalty and companionship, but let s not forget they depend on us too. We are one charity, a dog charity which looks after the health and welfare of all dogs. We make a difference by funding a wide variety of work ranging from research into canine diseases, dog welfare organisations and the promotion of support dogs, all of which give dogs a healthier, happier life. Thank you very much for any support you are able to give. Yours sincerely, Mike Townsend Chairman of the Kennel Club Charitable Trust There are many ways to donate to the Kennel Club Charitable Trust, yet there s one way to ensure your love and passion for dogs lives beyond your lifetime. A donation in your Will in the form of a legacy can help the Trust continue its important work. I hope you are inspired enough by the information enclosed to make a gift that shows how much you care about the future happiness and welfare of dogs. your legacy - page 2
why give your gift to the Kennel Club Charitable Trust? Established in 1987, the Kennel Club Charitable Trust has dedicated itself to its sole mission, making a difference for dogs. The Trust has three objectives, all aimed at fulfilling this goal. Science - research into diseases and other health conditions in dogs Support - The training of dogs to help humans Welfare - The rescue and re-homing of dogs which need help Your kind support means the Trust is able to achieve these objectives by making grants to many organisations that make a huge difference to dogs lives. Since its foundation, the Charitable Trust has given grants worth over 8 million to organisations to help dogs lead healthier, happier and more fulfilling lives. By keeping in mind the Charitable Trust in your Will, you will be playing an integral role in our mission to keep improving the health and welfare of dogs for the future. we ve given over 8 million to help dogs lead a more fulfilling life dedicated to making a difference for dogs since 1987 every goes to help dogs dogcharityblog.org.uk your legacy - page 3

science how you can help us support them: Kennel Club Cancer Centre at the Animal Health Trust The Kennel Club Charitable Trust recently awarded 40,000 to the Animal Health Trust to help it in its cancer research and thus support the oncology unit at the Kennel Club Cancer Centre. Cancer is the most common disease causing death in dogs. However, with the right facilities, expertise and treatment, it is also the most curable chronic disease in these companion animals. The Kennel Club Cancer Centre at the AHT will help many more pets to beat cancer. It will also help to better understand the disease and educate vets treating cancer, which will help to improve the situation for hundreds of animals, and their owners. The Kennel Club Cancer Centre will make a significant difference to the AHT s well-established cancer research programme by furthering the understanding of the genetic factors causing the condition. A gift in your Will is a wonderful way of helping us continue working with scientific organisations, such as the AHT, whose work is vital to the healthy future of dogs. for up to date charity news visit the dogcharityblog.org.uk together with the AHT we re helping more pets to beat cancer every goes to help dogs dogcharityblog.org.uk your legacy - page 5

support how you can help us support them Hearing Dogs for Deaf People Hearing loss is a major public health issue affecting more than 10 million people in the UK that s one person in every six. One charity which helps people deal with the condition is Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. A 30,000 grant was awarded by the Kennel Club Charitable Trust to Hearing Dogs for Deaf People to help towards the training of three new hearing dogs, which will each be partnered with a deaf person to enhance and promote their independence by alerting them to everyday household sounds and danger signals in the home, work place and in public buildings. Michele Jennings, CEO of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People said: As the only charity in the UK to specialise in this kind of training for hearing dogs, we would like to be able to extend the number of partnerships across the UK and this funding is a great step towards helping more people. Donations, such as a gift in your Will, could help us provide much needed funding for more vital support organisations like Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. we ve given 8 million to help dogs lead happier and healthier lives every goes to help dogs we ve helped create life-changing partnerships dogcharityblog.org.uk your legacy - page 7

welfare how you can help us support them: West Yorkshire Dog Rescue West Yorkshire Dog Rescue differs from many rescue charities in that it only uses foster homes, rather than kennels, to accommodate dogs. This prevents the stress and behavioural changes associated with kennel life and ensures that dogs in their care get proper exercise, resulting in happier, healthier dogs. West Yorkshire Dog Rescue relies on donations and the Kennel Club Charitable Trust awarded a grant of 4,000 to the charity in 2012, allowing it to purchase a van to enable them to transport dogs between foster and forever homes. The charity rehomed 234 dogs last year. One of these was Jess, a 10 month old Border Collie who didn t have the best start in life but is now thriving with her new best friend, 6 year-old Neve Barraclough from Tingley, West Yorkshire and her family. A gift in your Will could help us provide support for more organisations like this which keep dogs in warm, safe environments while waiting for a permanent home. the trust has given grants to over 100 canine rescue organisations every goes to help dogs we couldn t do all our work without the generosity of our donors dogcharityblog.org.uk your legacy - page 9
leave a legacy help change dogs lives forever As you have read on the previous pages, the Kennel Club Charitable Trust helps change dogs lives for the better. We are proud to be able to help make a difference for dogs, and this is only possible with the help of people like yourself. Any gift you leave, large or small will help us make a difference for dogs and we would like to thank you for showing your support. The Kennel Club Charitable Trust has been continuously working towards improving the health and welfare of dogs since its beginnings in You can help us carry on this work by leaving a gift in your Will. You can find the forms about how to remember the Kennel Club Charitable Trust in your Will on the facing page. your legacy - page 10

leaving your legacy to the canine world We understand that your first priority is to provide for your loved ones in your will. However, you may have a little extra to offer to a cause which you hold close to your heart, forever leaving a lasting legacy. A few things to consider 1. Decide who you would like to remember in your will. You also need to consider who you want as executors of your will. These are the people who make sure all your wishes are followed through. 2. Visit a solicitor to help you write your will. If you do not have a will already a solicitor will be able to make sure everything you want to include is included and it is all written down correctly. If you already have a will and would like to include the Kennel Club Charitable Trust it s easy for the solicitor to add your gift by using what s known as a codicil. 3. Keep your will somewhere safe. Your solicitor may be able to store a copy for you but always have another copy of your will the whereabouts of which someone else knows. 4. Let us know your intentions and to give us the opportunity to say thank you, please fill out the Legacy Pledge form enclosed at the back of this booklet. To find your local solicitor, simply visit
