Dear Friends and Supporters, While every day at ARF holds its own special magic, this year brought new levels of excitement and opportunities to save lives. As we were rescuing and finding loving homes for more than 2,600 animals, our programs reached new heights while responding to an unprecedented number of animals in need from natural disasters. 2,602 cats and dogs adopted Chloe brings our family so much joy. I can t imagine life without her now. ARF continues to stand ready to assist animals across the country from hurricanes or horrific wildfires, while maintaining our commitment to excellence and service to all animals in need. Our remarkable board, staff, and outstanding volunteers never once questioned the additional work, but only asked what more we could do bring aid and comfort to these animals. In addition, ARF also earned the highest possible four-star rating from Charity Navigator for the tenth consecutive year. Only one percent of charities reach this milestone and we are proud that 87 cents of every dollar goes directly to our programs. This rating symbolizes our promise to you in effectively stewarding your gifts to benefit animals in our care and sharing the love of a companion animal to those in need. On the pages that follow you will read about lives changed because of you. We are truly grateful for your continuing partnership and support of our goal: People Rescuing Animals...Animals Rescuing People. With gratitude, Elena Bicker Executive Director Chloe Rescued Adopted
People Rescuing Animals... Adoption Adoption is not only an animal s destination, but a journey we travel with them. When we walk into critically crowded public shelters, we don t always know what path brought an animal there but we know where they re going. We heal their bodies and spirits. We help reveal their true personality, unburdened by pain or fear, which endears them to their perfect family. With the wag of the tail or soft purr, they let us know they re ready. It s time for a forever home. Foster Foster families are an important partner in ARF s adoption success. Often, animals need a quiet space for surgical recovery or enhanced socialization in a home environment. Kittens and puppies need controlled access until they receive all vaccinations not to mention a little extra play time! ARF s extensive foster network allows ARF s loving care to extend beyond our physical walls and offer more animals a care plan tailored specifically to their needs highlights 305 rescue runs 137 dogs & 74 cats 100,638 volunteer hours 5,115 low-cost spay/neuter surgeries 369 foster families saving 2,452 lives treated through ARF's Emergency Medical Fund 42% increase over last year 150,625 lbs of pet food to low-income families sponsored by fostering 981 cats and dogs
Pet Hug Pack Pet Hug Pack offers love and compassion with the nudge of the nose or extension of a paw. These specially selected animals bring comfort and companionship to those in need including isolated seniors, hospital patients, stressed college students, and children struggling with academic or social skills. Humane Education Plant a seed and watch it grow! ARF s humane education programs teach respect and affection for animals from pre-school interactions to teen pet-care programs. Our annual camps and ever-growing community and family programs generate smiles, empathy, and a new generation of animal lovers. Dogs4Diabetics This new partnership brings animals and insulin-dependent diabetics together in innovative care solutions for this growing epidemic. Working with Dogs4Diabetics, we identify shelter dogs suited for lifesaving medical alert assistance training highlights 10,126 children reached by humane education programs L6,299 Pet Hug Pack visits reaching 522,819 people in need...animals Rescuing People
Transforming lives "Thanks to ARF, in the night when the demons come I don't have to be alone anymore." David Fuller and Katie 2017 Pets for Vets Graduates Pets for Vets What started as a program offering military veterans emotional support animals and free veterinary wellness clinics grew into a pioneering program transforming rescue dogs into trained service animals. Just like battle buddies in combat, these dogs become invaluable partners for veterans facing physical and emotional challenges in civilian life. And, unlike many service dog options that cost thousands of dollars and involve long waiting lists, ARF creates these animal-guardian support teams at no expense to the veteran. In exchange, our veteran-dog teams complete service training together, deepening the bond and commitment to the relationship. Following our first full class of service dogs in 2017, we ve seen an overwhelming interest. Positive word-of-mouth referrals from fellow veterans are our greatest mark of success highlights 8 Pets for Vets program graduates 32 Free V.A. animal wellness clinics
Keeping pets in homes Pet Safety Net In a perfect world, loving families never surrender pets to shelters. We work toward that goal every day providing educational or financial support for pets in families suffering hardships. ARF s intervention and practical assistance allows families in crisis to keep animals near, often when they need them the most. ARF Dog Training Training solves most common behavior complaints through compassionate education. Guardians and dogs celebrate when habits quickly transform from annoying to amazing with basic manners. Whether it s puppy playgroups or agility, ARF offers training classes available for a broad variety of skills. Disaster Relief ARF s disaster teams deployed more than ten times in From largescale hoarding situations to a cross-country air evacuation from a Category 5 hurricane, rapid applied to both the responses and succession of events. Weeks after ARF coordinated Hurricane Irma evacuations, we activated rescue teams closer to home with the NorCal fires. By providing evacuations, care, food supplies, and medical essentials, we not only removed animals from danger but provided a larger staging area for pet reunions and boarding. While disasters are the most unfortunate aspect of our jobs, we re proud to respond when called upon in times of need. ARF Emergency Medical Fund (EMF) Veterinary expenses often make the difference between an animal staying in a home or being surrendered to a shelter, especially among struggling families and seniors on fixed incomes. ARF provides affordable, non-emergency care for pets to families experiencing serious financial crises.
