May Smile-O Gram The Smile-O Gram Delaware Valley Elementary School 244 Routes 6 & 209 Milford, Pennsylvania (570) Vol Issue 9 Our School is a Magic Place! May 2016 D.A.R.E. Graduation By Connor Gaughan If you are a fifth grader you are in luck because May 31 is the D.A.R.E. graduation. Well if you don t know what dare means it means Drug Abuse Resistance Education. We were taught about how to lead safe and healthy lives. We learned about peer pressure and to live more useful lives by being drug and violence free. Well, after our D.A.R.E. graduation, I hope you will be hungry. Sheriff Phil, our DARE instructor, will be bringing a 18 foot Italian sub for us all to enjoy. Field Day By Nate Anderson I can t wait until DVES Field Day because it is really fun. We all like field day because we get to do a lot of fun things. Don t forget that field day is on June 1 st and 2 nd. I really want to have a great day to play some games with my friends and have as much fun as I can. This year it will be a little different. We will have an assembly, workshop, and pool or turf time. This will be the last field day for all the students in this Delaware Valley Elementary School. The new school will open for the school year in August located in Matamoras, PA. Field Day By Paige Willis Did you know that on my birthday, it is also Field Day? It will be the best day of my life. On Field Day we go outside and do all kinds of activities. The field day this year will be an assembly. We get to go to a workshop and maybe the pool. It sounds like it will be fun. Field Day/my b-day are on June 1 st. I will have a great time on this day!
Gettysburg Here We Come! By Alexis Grimes and Cassie Marmora The DVE-TV kids will be traveling to Gettysburg, P.A. on June 3rd & 4th! I would like to tell you a little bit about the trip. Some of the ways we raised money for the trip were, selling candy bars, and selling Smencils (pencils that smell good). The Tricky Tray was another fundraising event that helped us get our money to go on the trip. The trip is about 3 to 4 hours and to drive back it is 3 to 4 hours. During the ride, snacks are needed to keep our stomachs full. Every year the DVE-News/TV coaches take their 5th grade News and TV reporters on a trip whether it is at a faraway place or nearby. Some of the places they will go visit is A trolley to Eisenhower Historic Site,The Black Cat Tour with Spooky, Shriver House, Hershey s Chocolate World, where they will see a 4D Chocolate Mysteries Show and Create Your Own Candy Bar. This trip will be the biggest yet, and will surely be the most fun trip as well! National Hug Your Cat Day By Cameron Busch Did you know that on June 4, it is known as National Hug Your Cat Day? This would be a great day to show your purring, cuddly friend some love today in honor of this occasion. In Ancient Egypt, cats were admired and even worshipped as symbols of grace and poise. National Hug Your Cat Day is the perfect chance to give your cat all the attention to thank and hug them all those times they have cuddled up next to you after a long day. Did you know that showing your furry friend some affection is actually healthy for you? Studies have made known that hugs and affection from animals can lower blood pressure and reduce stress. I have a cat named Charlie. He s my favorite best friend. He nibbles my finger all the time. When he licks my fingers it tickles. It feels really neat when he purrs and it vibrates when I hug him. My cat Charlie is the best. He s nice to me. I love him. National Chocolate Ice Cream Day By Jack Sullivan National Chocolate Ice Cream Day is on June 7 th. We celebrate one of the most popular ice cream flavors. Thomas Jefferson liked chocolate ice cream while aboard the ambassador to France during the 1780s. It is likely that Thomas Jefferson brought ice cream to America. Today the U.S. produces 1.6 billion gallons of ice cream each year. Whether you want chocolate ice cream in a cone, cup, a sundae, or a milkshake indulge in a scoop (or two). So go out and buy yourself a chocolate ice cream now! The Last DVES Day of School! By Nate Anderson I can t wait until the last day of school, but also I m going to be a little upset. It s the last time I will be in this elementary school. The main reason I want to go to the middle school is to see what I is like. The reasons why I am upset is because the elementary school is being knocked down and because in the middle school, they say they are much more stricter. The other reason is I hear that they give a lot more homework. I really don t look forward to doing all that home work that they will be giving me. I look forward to summer vacation and having fun. I guess going to the DV Middle School isn t really all that bad and I am looking forward to it.
Flag Day By Emily Henn Have you ever heard of Flag Day? Well Flag Day, celebrated on June 14, is in honor of our American Flag. Also for all the people who served for our country. People who severed for our country are very special people because they saved lots of lives, and they put their lives out there for people. The American flags are blue, red, and white. The flag has fifty stars in honor of the states, and there are white and red strips. Father s Day By Leah Weinreb Did you Sunday June, 15 is Father s Day! Well know you know! This Father s Day treat your one and only unique father to something great! May I suggest a nice breakfast, or a nice homemade or thoughtful gift? You can even treat him to a nice dinner at his favorite restaurant? Either way I think your father will be very happy and considerate about what you decided to give him. Wishing every dad a great Father s Day! Ice Cream Soda By Olivia Coehlo Have you ever heard of an Ice Cream Soda Day? On June 20 th we have this holiday. We celebrate the fun of ice cream and soda together. Since it is hot and muggy outside, the ice cream soda can cool us off. The choice of ice cream is yours, but chocolate and vanilla are the most common flavors. Just because there is a most popular feel free to get creative with the flavors of soda and ice cream. Cool off, and have fun! World Turtle Day By Eddie Nieves Do you like turtles? Well I love turtles! For those turtle lovers out there, this is the day for you. World Turtle day was on May 23. This day is for the turtles to help them survive, and thrive. There are many different ways for celebrating World Turtle Day, for instance there s either dressing up like turtles, or saving them on roads. So people help the turtles on this day to help them survive in the wilderness for many more generations.
Chick Hatching Third Grade - Mr. Brocious and Mrs. Lawson Fourth grade Mrs. Genovese and Mrs. Thompson Mr. Brocious Class The Chicken Egg Experiment By Logan Olsommer, Frankie Pedone, and Michael Brown Chickens are hard work. They eat and drink a lot. They develop very quickly. They start with the fuzz and then they get feathers. It is awesome. They are loud. They are fun to play with too. You would love to have chickens. Here are some fun facts about chickens. 1. Chickens have a great memory 2. Chickens have great vision 3. Chickens can feel pain or distress 4. Over 952 million hens are used a year for eggs 5. Chickens love to play 6. The largest chicken egg weighed nearly 12 ounces 7. The temperature has to be around 100 degrees 8. You turn the eggs for 18 days 9. Boy chicks have lighter feathers Chicks By Julia Keller My class is hatching chicks. They are so cute too. When they are in the egg, the temperature has to be about degrees. It takes 21 days for the chicks to hatch. After the chick hatches it usually has to rest for an hour. The chick has a little fur or fuzz on its body and it is really slimy. After about 1 or 2 days, it starts to get fluffy and even cuter. At one point Mr. Brocious let us take some home and got to take home two for the weekend. When I got to school after that weekend, our teacher was dying the chicks with food coloring, mine were green. We had to bring them back on Wednesday the 18 th. The end.
Mrs. Lawson s Class By Marissa Gates, Grady Kean, Theodore Lee and Alina Kanet In our class, we hatched baby chicks. They are awesome and funny. At DVES, we will give away the chicks to someone who would like to have them. You need to take six eggs if you want them because chicks need company. If nobody wants them, we will send them to a farm. It took them 21 days to hatch. Before they hatch, they are in an incubator. When they hatch it takes about one hour for them to turn fuzzy. They are exhausted from all the strength it took to break out of the egg. They rest for about 30 minutes. Two days later we got to hold them. They were soft and warm. Hope you like the article. It took hard work and effort to make this. It was all worth it for the chicks. Mrs. Genovese s Class By Connor Mills, Autumn Lewis, Samuel Yost, and Summer Seeley Mrs. Genovese s fourth grade class completed an Embryology project where we hatched baby chicks. Mrs. Thompson s Class Mrs. Thompson s fourth grade class had the wonderful experience of hatching chicks as part of their Embryology project.
