1 (Untitled) By Courtney Omai Mililani Middle School, 7th Grade Chapter 1 : Narrator (cockatiel): June 13, 1990 is but a memory. A memory that plays over and over in my head. The more I watch the more I miss my Caroline. Sweet sweet Caroline. She was my first owner, the one who started it all. Oh how I miss her so. Background noise: Flick, flick, flick. Caroline s mom: Sweetheart there s one more present. Caroline s dad: Open it darling ( a gesture with hands ) Caroline: ( Takes cloth off cage and becomes shocked. ) Background noise: silence Narrator (Cockatiel): Because of the silence, I start to whistle the tune happy birthday as taught. During the tune, Caroline's face begins to thaw from her shock look and then forms into a giggle of pleasure. The crowd also begins to smile, giggle, and chat among themselves. Later, Caroline and her friends go and play outside while I sleep. Chapter 2: Narrator (cockatiel): The next day Caroline wants to introduce me to the rest of the family. She gets her parents to bring me into her room while I m sleeping. Caroline: Wake up little birdie, wake up. Cockatiel: Opens eyes. Caroline: Ah! Good morning Mr. Sunshine! Cockatiel: Confused by Caroline s sudden words, I figure out that Mr.Sunshine is me. Caroline: Mr. Sunshine, I wanted to show you the rest of the family. ( Caroline bends down and picks up Scraps, another one of her pets. ) Mr. Sunshine meet Scraps, he was my first pet that I got. Next is Angel, she s downstairs. ( Caroline moves Mr. Sunshine from the bed to the downstairs living room. She stops at an isolated table on the side

2 of the room. ) This is Angel. Angel, meet Mr.Sunshine. Chapter 3: Narrator (cockatiel): Thirteen years later Caroline turns eighteen and is going to college. But during those thirteen years I have come to know Caroline, her family, and pets well. I remember that whenever I woke up there was fresh vegetables in my cage, and that I was given the chance to fly around the house to stretch out my wings. But I mostly remember the times when Caroline would sing a song while I whistled to it. But now Caroline will be going to Harvard University and her parents will be going as well. Unfortunately, they will not be taking Scraps, Angel, and me with them. So we were taken to the vet to get our needed shots and then taken to the Humane Society just a few months before Caroline goes to college. Chapter 4: Narrator (cockatiel): Just eighteen months after being taken to the Humane Society, I had a new owner. There was a couple that came into the room where the birds are held. They chattered among themselves and to one of the humane society workers. background noise: tap, tap ( the sound of shoes walking closer ) mumbling. Narrator (cockatiel): The couple stops at my cage and observes me for a moment. Then they mumble something to the worker and leave. Just minutes after I was taken outside where I met the couple again. I was put into the car and driven off to the couple s house. Once inside the house I was greeted with soothing music. The couple went ahead of me bringing me along with them. The music stops and is replaced with chatter. After the conversation I had finally met my new owner. Chapter 5: Narrator (cockatiel): I find out that my new owner s name is David. He is ten years old and is usually home alone which explains why I m here. David doesn t talk nor do much. All he does is play his instruments. Though I must give him credit, he s a very talented boy. My name is no longer Mr. Sunshine but is now Beethoven. There s not much to do so I just listen to the music. Beethoven s Inner Voice: I must speak, I have to do something, I can no longer bear this silence. Beethoven: Whistles along with the music. Narrator (cockatiel): A few moments while I m whistling along with David s music he realizes that he s not the only one playing the song. David stops his playing and walks

3 toward the cage. David: Was that you? Narrator (cockatiel): In response to David s question, I whistle the same tune I was recently whistling to. David s face changes from observant to impressed. Chapter 6: Narrator (cockatiel): After that incident with David and I, the two of us have been practicing songs with each other. Flick, flick, flick. I release myself of the trip down memory lane. Beethoven s inner voice: I do this everyday, I go over everything from the past, from the time I met Caroline to today. It s been about two and a half years since I was separated from Caroline and I still miss her. But now I have a new owner, one that needs me more than ever. David, he s a very lonely child and needs all the company he can get, even if that company is a bird. Being with David has been lots of fun but he is nothing like Caroline. She was the best owner I ever had, not because she took good care of me but because she did the right thing. By taking me to the Humane Society I was able to meet David who I enjoy very much. And for what she did I will always remember Caroline in the best way a pet can.

4 Hawaiian Humane Society Voice for Animals Manuscript By the Aliamanu Boys and Girls Club of Hawaii Narrator: See right there? That s Snowball the kitty. Her owners recently abandoned her and she has nowhere to go tonight. Then it started to rain. Snowball went to sleep shivering. When she woke up the next morning she was dripping wet and a girl was walking past her. Esther: I found this little kitty on the side of the road and I m wondering if I can get information to adopt her. HHS: Sure, that s no problem. So I just need you to fill out a stray form. Just give me your information, as much as you can about the kitten, where you found it, and if you want to adopt it please check the box that says If not found, then like to adopt. It s called the finder wants. Go ahead and fill that out for me and I m going to see if she has a microchip. Nope, no tag. Since she doesn t have a microchip, we only have to hold her for 48 hours, we ll do a lost and found just to make sure nobody s got a claim on her, and then we ll contact you after there s a sterilization, we ll do the de-fleaing, give her a set of vaccinations and then she s ready to go. Sound good? Esther: Thank you. Narrator: Snowball the kitty loved her new owner, her new home and her new life. And they lived happily ever after. The end!

5 (untitled) By Kayla Centaure Moanalua High School, 9 th Grade Narrator: We are at the swap meet. Here we meet a little five year old with a big heart. Isabella, being a strong little girl, drags her mother to a stall where a man was selling animals. Isabella: Mommy! Look at the puppies!! Mother: Yes, Isabella, I see them. (Mother smiles at her daughter) Isabella: They don t look right. Look! That black puppy is bleeding! (Isabella s mother, quickly realizing what is going on, goes to talk to the stall owner while Isabella looks into the crate that s holding the puppies.) Mother: Excuse me sir, but are you the owner of this stall? Kaveha: Yes Maim, that d be me, was da problem? Mother: May I see that black lab s vaccination papers? Kaveha: Uh...Sorry Aunty...I don t seem to have the papers.. (Looks around warily) Mother: Alright, Isabella, come here please! Isabella: Yes Mama? I m sad; those puppies had scratches all over them! And they stunk. I don t think puppies are supposed to smell like that, Gracie s puppy s had a nice smell.. Mother: ShhShhShh Isabella. Come along now; let s go sit on that bench. (Mother whips out her phone and decides to call the HHS) Mother: Hello? Operator? Operator: Yes what seems to be the problem? Mother: My daughter and I just went into a stall selling animals at the swap meet at Aloha Stadium and I am concerned about them. I wouldn t have spotted them had it been for my five year old little girl, but the puppies were scratched up and were laying in their own feces, the stall owner also had none of the appropriate papers for the animals. Please send someone to get them, I m very concerned. We are currently sitting a little bit away from the stall on a bench. Operator: Don t worry; well dispatch someone momentarily to check them out. Thank you very much for this call. (Call ends and stage goes black. Time change, a week later at Isabella s home in their living room.) Mother: Isabella!! Come here quick! Isabella: What s up Mama? Mother: Here, watch the news! News Reporter: On another note, today the Hawaiian Humane Society and the Honolulu Police Department has arrested eight men for running, and buying animals form a puppy mill. We only found out about these people a short week ago; where a
