1 Inside this issue: Thank You s 2 Fur Ball 3 Mutt Strutt 4 Tis the Humane Season & Don t Shop...Adopt 5 Donation Form 6 Welcome Home! This is Miles first holiday season with us; and we re so excited! We adopted Miles from the WCHS two months ago and we can t imagine life without him. He s done a great job adjusting to his new home- he loves going on walks in the back yard, taking cat naps in front of the fire, and playing with his new best friend, Apollo, our pug. Miles has lots of energy, which has helped to give Apollo some extra pep! When Miles isn t being adventurous, he s a little snuggle bug. He loves to be wherever we are and to curl up with us at night. We re so glad that we adopted Miles and we can t wait to celebrate the holiday season with him! Thanks to the WCHS for taking such great care of him! -Sarah, Michael, and Apollo Annual Membership going up to $40, but why should I become a member? Our low membership fee means the world to the animals at WCHS. The Whitman County Humane Society is a nonprofit organization supported primarily through the donations of caring residents. 1. The animals need your support. Membership dues contribute to routine, ongoing costs to care for the animals. 2. There's strength in numbers. The size of our membership demonstrates our importance in the community. This is vital in grant applications to enhance the fulfillment of our mission goals and in building relationships with other city and county entities. 3. Our members are our best source of volunteers. Increasing our membership with active and caring individuals naturally increases our volunteer ranks. This allows us to provide more services to the general public at an affordable cost.

WCHS earned $4000 by running the National Lentil Festival Beer Garden in August. We extend a huge shout-out to the following volunteers, without whom we couldn't have done it: Becky Bitter, Kellie Bracht, Geoff Caldwell, Kylene Daschofsky, Leticia Fanucchi, Nickol Finch, Nikki Finnestead, David Frye, Peter Fuerst, Tim Gehring, Colleen Harrington, Kath Harrington, Tom Harris, Steve Hines, Kayla Jones, Ezekiel Juel, Evan Juras, Amy Kaucic, Jan Luft, Kelly McGovern, Pat Meier, Amber Morczek, Logan Morris, Jean Norris, Wendy Ortman, Katelynn Piazza, Dan Port, Lauren Port, Linda Rogers, Joan Rutkowski, Kelly Sebold, Leslie Sprunger, Traci Topping, Natasha Volkova, Cyndi Vollmer, Dan Vollmer, Susan Wang, and Audrey Zoesch. Special thanks to the Pullman Chamber of Commerce for allowing us to help out! WCHS thanks Dissmore's IGA staff and patrons for another great pet food and supply drive this October! WCHS Football Parking Volunteers! WCHS is grateful to the part-time staff and volunteers who have gone out of their way to assist Pullman Kiwanis and the WSU Cougar Athletic Fund with football gameday parking this fall As of this writing, WCHS has earned $3022 for these efforts! Our thanks go out to volunteers Becky Bitter, Calli Carroll, Kim Devich, Ezekiel Juel, Jan Luft, Kelly McGovern, Cresta Parker, Dan Port, Linda Rogers, Kelly Sebold, Cyndi Vollmer, Dan Vollmer, and Susan Wang volunteering over 232 hours over six Saturday s. ~ In Memory of Joey D ~ Page 2 The Show was On at Pullman Civic Theatre WCHS thanks the PCT for their benefit performance of "Sylvia" on October 8, 2015 raising approximately $100! Dash has been with WCHS since June of He is incredibly smart, inquisitive and loves his raw hides and other interactive toys. He prefers to be with his family and close friends, and loves to cuddle and go on walks. We'd like to place Dash in a quiet home without other dogs or young children. Cats are a "maybe"; his previous owner reported that he chased cats, but he's had a couple of successful interactions with a foster parent's very confident and very dogfriendly cat. Dash would do best in a home with someone who is familiar with positive methods of dog training; Dash is currently "in training" with WCHS's volunteer Behavior Club and has plenty of experience under his belt! Please let us know if you'd like to meet him. Joey D, a longtime patron of the WCHS, recently had an unfortunate accident and has followed his Kidney and Beanie to that dog kennel in the sky. You brought so much joy to Fred and Fran and will be missed.

4 Page 4 Thank You for Attending the 7th Annual Mutt Strutt! And the Morris Animal Foundation Fun Run/Walk! Saturday, 9/12, was a beautiful day and a terrific chance for dogs, their owners, vendors, and/or runners to have a great time supporting Pooch Park at Pullman and WCHS. $5 from each fun run/walk entry benefited WCHS, and over $3000 was raised to fund installation of a new, improved entry system and finish off the shade structures at the park. 5 Page 5 WCHS is searching for a permanent homes for a mother cat and kittens who have all tested positive for Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV.) FeLV is infectious to other cats so would be best in a home without other cats or in a place where they can be safely quarantined. FeLV+ kitties live about 2 healthy years on average and still deserve forever homes! More information about FeLV+ cats can be found at bestfriends.org/resources/felv-faqs. Please contact us for more information about how to adopt one of these kitties, who are often at risk of euthanasia at shelters because they must be kept quarantined from FeLV negative cats and can't be allowed outside. The adoption fee for FeLV+ cats and kittens is discounted to $30 (plus tax). Catelyn Leia ~ Tis the Humane Season ~ Whether you are a cat person or a dog person, or someone who connects with animals generally, I'm sure you'll agree that they bring something special and essential to our lives -- a kind of innocence and an in-the-moment experience that we humans often lack. Though still in its infancy, research is finding out more about what our pets do for us: the science shows that cat owners are less likely to have heart attacks, and dog owners have lower blood pressure and lower heart rates. But there are other gifts as well. Our pets help us to connect with the natural world in a fundamental way. We see the world anew through their eyes, and appreciate that we are just one small piece of creation and the environment. They also help us to develop and deepen empathy and compassion, which is particularly important for children. And they help us connect with what really matters -- loyalty, goodness, and abiding affection for others. Pets help our human experience to be more humane. Period. So as I reflect on the holidays and about what I'm grateful for, I think about the gifts that my shelter pets have given me. I think about how drab life would be without them. Even the gratitude that I feel about what they bring to my life is a gift -- it spills over and spreads. Yep, my gratitude quotient is higher because of my pets! I'm declaring this the humane season, and I hope that you'll join me and make a contribution to the humane society's work. It would be such a help! Of course, if you have room for one of our shelter pets in your loving home, we would be very grateful. ~Becky Bitter~
