Founder Laura s original Coco - RIP NOVEMBER & DECEMBER 2010 NEWSLETTER #19 Breaking News! : page 1 New Kitty Kottage special facility for special needs: page 2 Results of Scavenger Hunt fundraiser in November: page 3 Adoptable Cat Haven cats and Coco s kittens: page 5 Coco s Canadian Connections!: page 9 Coco s has received funding for rental of a second Coco s house and a second full-time vet! Our new vet s name is Dr. Leticia Mora. The addition of Dr. Mora and having two houses close to each other will allow our clinic to expand, and provide more room for rescued kittens, many of which require initial segregation due to contagion issues. The funds have been provided by a small U.S. foundation that wishes to remain anonymous. By now, the names Rob and Jeri from Dallas are familiar to our readers as a very generous couple who have given Coco s so much help and support. They are now donating several pieces of labratory equipment that will make our vets work even more effective: a brand new microscope; an autoclave; IDEXX blood lab; and a heart monitor machine, including ECG. The vets will continue to work out of the original clinic building and one room will house the laboratory equipment for their use. This set up leaves plenty of room for living and play space for rescued kittens, along with segregation areas. The incredibly generous donations of funding and equipment will mean Coco s can rescue even more kittens to bring to health and ready for adoption. As well, our hardworking vets will be able to spay and neuter even more cats and dogs, and get timely lab results which, in many cases, will speed up treatment and recovery.

Two amazing Coco s volunteers, Roz and Dave, have built a facility for kitten care on their property. They will care for special needs, newborns and other Coco s kittens! Isn t it beautiful? The cottage has two separate areas so that newborns and special needs can be cared for at the same time. What an amazing idea and what an amazing facility Roz and Dave! We thank you and the kittens thank you! How about sending us an update of your experience in a month or two?

We thought we d bring you up to date with the fantastic results of our November fundraiser. Our scavenger hunt teams were very impressive with their inventive and fun costumes! A great time was had by all and we were thrilled with the amounts raised (all in pesos): Scavenger hunt: $20,262 Sales of burgers (sponsored by buyplaya.com): $1,700 Donations: $5,429 T-shirts and calendar sales: $1,394 Total money raised from the raffle: $27,161 Generous 20% of bar profits from Zenzi: $2,330 Sales of Coco s Shots: $440 Rob (right) and Laura with our first prize raffle winner. Rob donated the laptop! GRAND TOTAL: $58,716 pesos!

Our 2 nd anniversary party and silent/on line auction is planned for March. We ve been collecting some amazing auction items but we still need more! NOTE TO PLAYA BUSINESSES: We need more auction items and if you wish to participate, your logo will go on all promotional materials for the event! Contact details are at the end of the newsletter. Full details of date, time and location to follow P.S. 5 Sweet kitties available for adoption! Our mission We are a non-profit organization with a no kill policy, dedicated to reducing and controlling the cat population in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. We achieve this via our TNR (trap, spay/neuter and return) program for feral cats, and our rescue, treat, spay/neuter, and tame program for kittens under three months. We aim to find a permanent loving home for all the rescued kittens in our care. Is your new pet in this group? Have a good look and when you can see one or two in your home, just get in touch at info@cocoscatrescue.org and we ll bring you and your new pet(s) together! The first seven photos are beautiful cats from the (now closed) Cat Haven at Peanut Pet Shelter. They are all healthy and ready for adoption! We are also committed to education which encourages responsible pet ownership and challenges negative associations with feral cats and consequent cruelty. We provide free or low cost spay/neuter surgeries and basic pet care to those on a low income. Our long term mission is to greatly increase the number of animals that we are able to assist and expand our model to embrace other local areas in need of our services.

MORE CAT HAVEN ADULTS To adopt a cat from the PPS Cat Haven, please contact Coco s! Contact details are at the end of the newsletter.

And here are Coco s kittens, also healthy and ready for adoption: WEEKLY KITTEN CUDDLE DAY EVERY FRIDAY FROM 2 4 P.M.! Then taxis pass by all the time so it s easy to get back to town. Coba, female, 2 months Dusty and Willow, females, 4 months Coba was born with severely deformed back leg, but is mobile. She needs to be an inside cat in a loving and caring home, perhaps where she is the only pet. THE KITTENS WOULD ADORE YOUR LOVE AND ATTENTION! EVERYONE IS WELCOME! Mishu, male, 2 months Noir, female, 2 months

Phoebe, female, 2 months Rascal, male, 2 months Reeefa, female, 6 months WON T YOU PLEASE CONSIDER ADOPTING REEFA? SHE MAY NOT BE A GLAMOUR PUSS, BUT SHE S A DARLING SWEET CAT. SHE NEEDS AND DESERVES A FOREVER HOME! Contact Laura at info@cocoscatrescue.org when you re ready to bring one or two of these darlings home!

There are two very special animal rescue groups in Canada that are helping find homes for Coco s kittens. The first, Whitecourt Homeless Animal Rescue foundation (WHARF) recently welcomed these 14 kittens at their facility in Edmonton, Alberta: Coronita, Marita, Box, Cozie, Edward, Bella, Jorge, Fernando, Sambuca, Sqwinkly, kaya, Mimo, Piolin and Zola. They were able to travel unescorted through our humane partner, Cats and Dogs International (CANDi), another Canadian group that coordinates free flights for dogs and cats in need, through Air Transat. Six more Coco s kittens are scheduled to go to Edmonton in a few weeks. We cannot thank our wonderful Canadian friends enough for all their help and support! In the kitty playroom at Coco s before leaving: This is what it looks like when 14 kittens are taken to the airport! Our wonderful volunteer Cryss was in charge.

More kittens and supplies for the flight! Below, all 14 kittens and some rescued dogs from Cancun are loaded for transport to the plane. Contact info for Coco s Cat Rescue: Cell phone: (From N. America, dial: ) info@cocoscatrescue.org Information regarding our financials, municipal and tax status is available upon request. Newsletters will be published once or twice a month, except December. We love to get stories and information from our readers: please send to thepagesmx@hotmail.com. Submissions welcome; cat humour, rescues and life-with-acat stories will be featured whenever available!
