I hope you remember him as he is a super dog. He is thriving as are we. He loves to travel and go anywhere we go. He seems to never have met another dog or adult that he doesn t love. He adores our cat and our grandkids and is kind and gentle with both. The grandkids adore him right back and keep trying to convince us to leave him at their house (no chance of that happening). Baxter s joy knows no bounds when he is excited. He is a dog that radiates such enthusiasm that one can t help but laugh with his excitement. Baxter loves his pink ball and it is his constant companion. Since we no longer have cows Baxter has taken it upon himself to heel us and herd his pink ball that is his job and he is very good at it. He herds his pink ball all day long and we accommodate him by throwing it down the hill over and over again. He has us well trained. Baxter has given us more joy than we ever imagined and he is a happy dog, which thrills us. He is safe and loved, gives us as much love as we give him, and is a joy to be with. Thanks for making our lives and Baxter s very happy. LS Nickersons Thanks to Joan Rutkowski for her hard work in securing a $2000 Bernice Barbour grant. WCHS was recently notified that the Inland Northwest Community Foundation grant was successfully renewed for the third year. The grants supports WCHS programs that have a direct impact on animals, including the Spay/Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP fund) and the Hope Fund for veterinary care of injured/ill stray or sheltered (unowned) pets. Santa Paws Is Coming to Town! Visit our trees of giving at local merchants near you and help brighten the holidays for the homeless pets of Whitman County by donating supplies needed to help support WCHS all year long. WCHS is especially looking for the following items: nonclumping clay cat litter, dish soap, dog toys (especially plush, squeaky, and/or KONGs), dry dog food, KMR DRY kitten formula, paper towels, POWDER laundry detergent, rake/flathead pooper scoopers, toilet paper, and trash bags (13 and/or 55 gallon). Trees are located at: Barnacle Bill s (Pullman), Dissmore s IGA (Pullman), Food Center (Endicott), Grange Four Star Supply (Colfax), Hulbert Hall, Johnson Hall, and Johnson Tower (WSU Pullman campus), Pets Are People Too (Pullman), Primeland (St. John), Rosauer s (Colfax), Safeway (Pullman), Shopko (Pullman).
Page 2 Dear Members, Board of Directors President Amy Williams Vice-President Susan Wang Secretary Jan Luft Treasurer Tom Harris Board Members Debbie Bikfasy Nickol Finch Tim Gehring John-Mark Mahnkey Steve Martonick Kelly McGovern Gene Siple We want to thank you for the vital support your annual membership provides. It has literally helped us take care of over 300 animals so far this year and adopt our shelter animals into loving homes. As always, we will contact you when your membership is due to expire. As 2012 draws to a close, we are looking to the challenge of continuing our services in 2013 and inviting members to donate to our year-end campaign. Your donation will help us shelter, feed, and care for the many animals we take in and provide support that improves their lives and adoptability. Your support will help dogs such as LuLu, who was brought to us after her owner left her behind. Lulu has a severe case of lateral luxating patellas, which will cause debilitating arthritis in her knees later in life. As a no-kill shelter, we know it is worth the wait to find the home that can support the needs she ll eventually have. For now, LuLu is pain-free and bounding around like any other happy one-year-old, just waiting to bring her love and energy to a new home. We provide haven and care for pets like Lulu because we know there are loving forever homes out there for all of the dogs, cats, and other companion animals we shelter. But it costs money to do this more than we are able to bring in through adoption fees and other service charges. If you are able to donate, we invite you to use the enclosed donation form and envelope. If you have questions, please don t hesitate to call us at (509) or us at admin@whitmanpets.org. On behalf of our homeless animals, thank you for your support! Sincerely, Staff Brittany Bryant Ambrose Chong Kylene Daschofsky Mango De Silva Mike Peet Kristin Rolfe Joan Rutkowski Publication created by the WCHS PR Committee and Kelly McGovern, printed by j & h Printing Whitman County Humane Society So Long, Farewell, Auf Wiedersehen, Goodbye! WCHS bids our wonderful, versatile volunteer Robert Liebermann a fond farewell as he leaves the Palouse to return to Alaska and work with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. A little over a year and a half ago, Robert adopted our beautiful orange cat, "Mr. Q," who had been abandoned at the shelter outside the outdoor dog runs. Robert has been a fantastic, deeply valued volunteer who spent many weekends at the shelter caring for our adoptable dogs and especially the kittens and cats searching for new homes. In addition, Robert served as a Lentil Festival Beer Garden volunteer for two summers and recently spent some chilly Saturdays as a WSU football parking volunteer. We wish Robert, Mr. Q, and their best friend Fran well as they move on to the Great White North! Thank you, Robert! WCHS offers our deepest condolences to the family of AnimalHaven Benefactor Carollee Webber It is with a sad heart that we would like to acknowledge that Carollee Webber, passed away on Tuesday, November 27, Carollee was a passionate contributor and believer in WCHS mission. We will post a full tribute in our Spring newsletter.
Page 3 Editor s note: Nala s new owner recently sent us this letter, which we wanted to share because she was such a special dog to us. Hi Brittany, Nala is doing great! She is really enjoying all her new toys and her cozy beds that we have for her both up and downstairs. She took some time getting used to the stairs, but is managing great now. Nala is taking full advantage of the backyard and is funny to watch as she can keep herself entertained for quite some time with a tennis ball. She is also doing well on her walks, and we are using a gentle leader like you advised. Nala has a new playmate named Abby. Our friends who live close by bring Abby over and we take Nala to their home and it is cute to see the dogs get along. Oh, Nala does fine with our bunny & really has no interest in her. The bunny just runs around Nala and they check each other out. I am so grateful we found such a sweet dog that fits with our family...thanks for taking such good care of her while she was at the shelter! Have a great day, Jamie Animal Blessing at Sacred Heart Catholic Church! On Sunday, October 14, Sacred Heart held its second Annual Blessing of the Animals in honor of St. Francis of Assisi. We thank Miranda Harpel Hill-McGaw, Elizabeth Siler, and everyone at Sacred Heart for all of their assistance in putting on this event! Our thanks also go out to everyone who stopped by with their pets and gave free-will offerings, raising $133 to benefit WCHS.

So Many Thank You s. Page 5 Thank You, Birch & Barley! WCHS was honored to be the beneficiary of Kegs for a Cause at Birch & Barley, 1360 Bishop Boulevard, on August 30. $1 from each draft beer sold in the bar and on the patio came to benefit WCHS. Over $100 in donations were raised, making for a great night despite WSU s loss to BYU. Special thanks to co-owner Josh Clark and manager Jill Bielenberg for making this great evening possible WCHS looks forward to partnering with you again! Thanks to Rico's and their patrons for donating $278 in proceeds from trivia nights. 50/50 Raffle Winner!! Karen Leggett was our 50/50 raffle winner. She won $ of the $504 pot. She is generously giving back and dividing her winnings among 3 local groups, with $52.50 to the Dog Park. Thank You, Pullman WSECU Members! The Washington State Employees Credit Union (WSECU) ran a Charity of Choice campaign this summer as part of their effort to increase membership. WSECU promised to donate $25/new member to a charity voted upon by existing WSECU members. WCHS came in first at both the Grand Avenue and WSU campus locations and was fortunate to earn the $7200 pot!! Thank You, My Office Bar and Grill! The WCHS Dog Park Committee extends its great thanks to My Office Bar and Grill and Valhalla Bar and Grill owners Heather Goodrich and Jeff Packer, New Belgium Brewing, and Odom Distributing for donating and raffling off a Fat Tire bicycle! The grand prize winner was Hilda Gonzalez of Pullman. $1009 was raised, which gets WCHS that much closer to opening the dog park in 2013!
Page 6 Thank You, Dissmore s! WCHS wrapped up another wonderful pet food and adoption drive at Dissmore s in early October. Over two pallets of needed pet food and supplies were generously donated by Dissmore s patrons. We thank Assistant Manager Mike Rudd, Store Manager Trev McCuaig and all of the other amazing staff at Dissmore s for making this event run so smoothly! See you in the spring! Thank You, Palouse Empire Fair Volunteers! August and September were busy months for WCHS volunteers, as we were spread at events throughout the county! Our thanks go out to the following staff and volunteers who spent their days and nights at the Palouse Empire Fair outside Colfax, spreading the word about WCHS to residents throughout the county: Brittany Bryant, Ambrose Chong, Kylene Daschofsky, Mango DeSilva, Nickol Finch, Jean Norris, Mike Peet, Linda Rogers, Kristin Rolfe, Joan Rutkowski, Gene Siple, Susan Wang, and Amy Williams. Volunteers we could not do it with out you!! Thank You, WCHS Football Parking Volunteers! WCHS is grateful to the part-time staff and volunteers who have gone out of their way to assist Pullman Kiwanis and the WSU Cougar Athletic Fund with football gameday parking on October 13, November 10, and November 23. As of this writing, WCHS has earned $1000+ for these efforts! Our thanks go out to 10/13 volunteers Kylene Daschofsky, Heather Kehret, Channing Koster, Robert Liebermann, Chelle Manus, Jan Luft, Linda Rogers, Kristin Rolfe, Susan Wang, and Sally Wurster and our frozen 11/10 volunteers Anna Clarke, Robert Liebermann, Jan Luft, Chelle Manus, Kelly McGovern, Linda Rogers, Cyndi Vollmer, Dan Vollmer, Susan Wang, and Amy Williams. Dog Park Craft Fair Thanks! The WCHS Dog Park Committee would like to thank the volunteers who staffed our informational table at the Autumn Craft Fair at Beasley Coliseum. Volunteers included Doug Hobart, Judy Hobart, Kelly McGovern, Linda Rogers, Susan Wang, and Amy Williams. We extend our special thanks to the Craft Fair organizers who generously donated space for our table and to Lauren Young for organizing the effort. The offleash play area was able to raise $315 in funds! Remember that the facility will be opening in summer 2013, and WCHS is always looking for donations to finish off the job! Thank You, Jess Ford Thanks to Jess Ford for tree planting/weeding at the dog park: Rick Fargo, Jeff Groat, Jim Jess, Ryan Lamance, Andrew Seaman, and Lorraine Valdez.
Page 7 Tax Time 2012 Is Coming: Ways to Help WCHS As 2012 winds to a close, it s the perfect time to consider making a donation to Whitman County Humane Society. Here are a few of the ways you can help: Donate toward our Spay/Neuter Assistance Program Fund. One way that s proven to reduce the number of homeless pets is simply by spaying or neutering them. This fund, completely separate from general WCHS operations, provides vouchers of up to $50 to pet owners to cover up to 75 percent of the cost of spaying or neutering their pets. Please help others do the right thing! Donate toward our Hope Fund. This compassion fund allows WCHS to accept and treat injured or ill but adoptable! pets without owners who would otherwise be euthanized. WCHS has accepted two Hope Fund pets this year from Uniontown and Spokane. To donate to any of these special funds, please use the enclosed donation form or visit I would like to continue to support the Whitman County Humane Society Please cut and return to P. O. How to balance puppy vaccination schedule with socialization Reconciling the need to protect puppies from pathogens until they are fully vaccinated with the importance of early and proper socialization can be difficult, writes veterinarian Jeff Kahler. Owners should avoiding taking puppies to parks and other public areas where disease potential is unknown, but they can introduce their pet to others that are also following appropriate vaccination in a controlled environment, Dr. Kahler recommends.
