1 Koi Ahoy Volume 27 Number 11 November, 2016 Jean Jahr, President Bob Haugland, Editor Pauline Sakai, Photos Trey Yellott Make Camellia Great Again! We ll Be Active in the AKCA Fund Raising Efforts for KHV Research See flyer at right The Associated Koi Clubs of America are very active and generous about fighting the threat of the Koi Herpes Virus. They give grants for KHV research all the time. So much so that the coffers are low and they have started a national fund raising campaign. Camellia Koi Club is one of many members of the AKCA, we support them and they support us. We ll be passing the hat, or fish bowl, at meetings. We ll accept small donations, spare change or whatever you can help out with. We ll forward the collections on behalf of Camellia Koi Club. This is all tax deductible so if you can offer a sizeable amount you can write a check for the fish bowl or mail it directly to the address at the right. Please mention Camellia Koi Club on your check. November, Spaghetti Contest, Vote for New Officers, Visit Two Fantastic Ponds, Road Trip to Lodi Start simmering that sauce because the Spaghetti Contest/Camellia Koi Club meeting is November 13. We start out at the pond of Jerry & Phyllis Kyle, 327 Del Mont St., Lodi There you will be greeted by giant boiling pots of pasta for which we will sample sauce recipes for the contest. Last year we had four wonderful choices and Sandy Mascadri was crowned Queen of Sauce. Should you choose not to enter a sauce creation, you can opt to contribute to the potluck in another way. After slurping up tons o pasta & sauce, you ll be given the opportunity to vote for your favorite. We will also vote for new officers. Running unopposed, so far, are: Sam Niebank, President. Audrey Sinor, Secretary. Georgia Vonk, Treasurer. We have two openings for Board of Directors and three candidates: Rebecca Lippert, Trey Yellott, & Jerry Kyle. Once all of the commotion has settled down, we walk around the corner (about 200 ) to the pond of Jack & Barbara Flockhart. There we ll see another fantastic pond & koi collection and have dessert. The results of both polls will be revealed and we ll crown another Queen or King of Sauce. Here s your link a google map to fun: , ,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x809aa05d93985b4b:0xde ca78618e!8m2!3d !4d STAMP OUT KHV PLEASE DONATE HERE ANNOUNCING OUR AKCA PROJECT KHV FUND RAISING DRIVE Please help us sponsor research to stamp out KHV and protect our beloved koi from this killer disease All funds go 100% to KHV Research & Education All donations are tax deductible Federal TAX ID# Make checks payable to and mail to: AKCA Project KHV P.O. 2 Koi Ahoy, November, 2016 page 2 Boon s Pond, October 30, 2016 Sounds like a wine from the 70 s right? Nope. It s Keith & Jayne Boons 2500 gallon liner pond in Antelope. The pond is protected by multiple dinosaurs, but they were no match for the wily otter that visited once. Ask either Jayne or Keith to tell you the story. When the Board convened at noon it was raining pretty good. By meeting s end it was sunny and pleasant. Dr. Sanders, at left with Count Cubillo, shows up driving her clown fish car. It s no laughing matter though as she is seriously a DR4FISH. Twenty- two additional little clown fish doctors got out of the car too, but we don t know where they went.
3 Koi Ahoy, November, 2016 page 3 DR. Jesse Sanders She gave us a power point presentation of Fish Vet Adventures. She started her career on the east coast and showed some slides of her and her team that gave a large shark a physical prior to shipping it off to another aquarium. By the time she got to Koi Adventures, it got a little gory. She showed photos of a goldfish with a large tumor on one eye. The tumor was so big that the fish couldn t swim correctly. The cure was to remove the eye and tumor together. She showed before and after pictures, so not as gory as it could have been. She has done numerous abdominal tumor removals with much success, if caught early enough. One photo showed the removed tumor next to the dead koi, both looked to be about the same size. Here s a You Tube link to a 5 minute video of a successful tumor removal that actually took about a half hour. Warning: This one is indeed blood n guts. Top 5 Mistakes That Fish Owners Make, and it s worth the time to watch. There s a link below to make it easy for you. mc_eid=3957dde2bc A link to see the mouth surgery that saved a goldfish named Lemon. This is actually still photos on one of her newsletters so you ll not only see how she saved this little guy s life, you can click the proper spot and get her monthly newsletter too. oral- reconstructive- surgery/?utm_source=avsnca+newsletter&utm_campaign=61e05d _CAMPAIGN_2016_10_28&utm_medium= &utm_term=0_191a1d488b- 61e05d &mc_cid=61e05d0260&mc_eid=3957dde2bc Upcoming Stuff The Christmas Party is Sunday, December 4, 1:00pm, at Ginger s Restaurant in Roseville. The cost is $12/person and you ll be able to order from a menu. Drinks, tax, & tip are included, but if you want a cocktail or brew, that s on you. The ever exciting White Elephant Gift Exchange is on tap too, so start collect them elephants. More details in the next newsletter. Annual Dues are still only $30 per family. This is a bargain folks, especially when you consider that the club kicks in $10 per person for the Christmas Party dinner. We take our Non- Profit status seriously! The easiest way to pay is to write a check for the dinner and dues together. Do it now and put it in your wallet so you can hand it to Georgia at the next meeting. AKCA-KHV Committee Report...Jerold Kyle Committee Chair We are off to the races. The word is hardly out about our goal of continuing to raise additional funds in order to be partners helping Oregon State University's ambition of stopping this deadly virus that is harming the Koi we love and clubs and individuals are already responding with donations. Dr. Ling Jin, DVM and Project leader/ Teacher at OSU reports they got their paper on ORF6 protein expression accepted in Virology and will send us a copy as soon as they get it from the printer. What excites me is she reports she is working on a KHV mutant that may be used as a vaccine. It is painstaking and slow but continually positive and most important we be in position to be of further help when current grant runs out this next June.
4 Koi Ahoy, November, 2016 page 4 Camellia Koi Club Report to AKCA.....by Jerold Kyle Club Rep The CKC enjoyed yet another club meeting at yet another recently new member pond. Jessie Sanders, DVM, CertAqV, from Soquel, CA, traveled to Sacramento area and demonstrated how important it is for all of us to have a relationship with a Vet who cares about Koi. The Question and Answer period after her presentation was great with so many members having so many questions for someone who was worth listening to. With so many qualified certified AKCA KHAs and now a nearby Vet to refer to, the CKC continues to attract new members and grow. Next month will be election of new officers and reports on both a Pond Tour and a sanctioned Koi Show in KP 101 It s Getting Colder Every Day by Bob Haugland Maybe today s high will be 72º, which isn t too bad, except that the overnight low was 48º. The pond is 63º in the morning and 65º by midday. Since the koi are cold blooded, their metabolism slows as the temperatures drop. So does everything else in the pond, plants, algae, chemical reactions, other animals. Other animals in my pond? The Boons have a turtle, but that s not what I m referring to. There are bugs and stuff in your pond. Dragonfly and mayfly larvae, red worms, snails, even water/earth worms. Then there s the stuff that s even smaller; hydras, crustasions, little microscopic scary looking things that your koi slurp up from the algae. Even the bad guys; flukes, various protozoas, and bacterias, these are all animals, and they re all cold blooded. They re going to winter over in your pond, one way or the other. Every time someone has a pond infestation of flukes, or bacteria, or whatever, the question is always, Where did they come from? I haven t bought a fish or put anything new in my pond for over a year! Sometimes the only answer is that they ve always been there. Most koi ponds are harboring many of these bad bugs, but in small numbers that aren t a threat to our fish. Koi have a natural immunity to disease and external parasites. Even the slime coat, which isn t actually a part of the fish, has cells and antibodies that ward off invasions from small attacks from small creatures. It s when we allow these little microscopic villains to multiply and mount an organized attack that the koi get sick. So all year long we feed our babies proteins, vitamins, probiotics and stuff to keep them plump and healthy. We back flush filters and do our regular water change outs. Now it s time to do our Fall Spring cleaning. It s time to flush out those villains and not allow them to winter over and cause trouble next year. You know the drill, get all of the dead vegetation out of the pond, and keep it out all winter. If you have rocks or other décor in the bottom of your pond, that s a haven for the bad guys. Pull them out and leave them out, or at least wait until next spring to put them back in. I know that this idea goes against the grain for some people, but the cleanest, healthiest ponds don t have anything in them but water, fish and a few drains and returns. Once the pond is physically clean, do the same to the filters. Don t just back flush for a few seconds because that s what the instructions say, back flush until it runs clear. Better yet, take it apart and remove the mulm and yuck. To preserve the bio- converting bacteria, rinse with pond water or well water. The bio- converting bacteria is a microscopically invisible slime coat on all of the solid surfaces, it s not in the mulm- yuck. Once the pond and filter are physically clean you can consider a chemical attack on the bad guys. A potassium permanganate treatment might be called for. If you ve never done this before, get your Koi Buddy to help you get started. An over dose of PP can be lethal to your fish. This would also be a good time to start using those KoiZyme or MedZyme type products that will continually cultivate the good bacteria s and discourage the bad ones.
