Page 2 Travis Says, SURFSIDE DEPUTY REPORT DEPUTY T. OSTGAARD FEBRUARY 9 th 15 th, 2017 On 02/09 a member of the water crew found a baggy with crystal like objects inside it. The baggy was turned over to me and I field tested a small amount of the powder inside the baggy. The test was positive for methamphetamine. I put the baggy in to evidence for destruction. On 02/10 and 02/11 I had calls involving a house in the block of O St. The calls were civil issues. On 02/11 I was dispatched to the block of I St. for a shots fired call. There were two reports of shots fired in the area, possibly coming from G St. A state trooper and I checked the area. We did not hear anything and I did not get any further reports. Traffic warnings: 5 -Citation: 4-Civil issue: 2-Suspicious circumstances: 1 Noise complaint: 1 SLOW DOWN!! 25 mph in all Surfside areas other than I Street North of the mini-mall! Emergency? CALL 911!!!! For non-emergency calls, call the Sheriff s office at If it s Travis you need to speak with leave a message at the business office and he ll return your call.

Page 5 Just a reminder. All dogs are required to be on leash in Surfside if they are not in your home or in a fenced yard. There are many reasons to keep them leashed, not only for their safety but for those around them. Leashed dogs are less likely to be hit by a car. Even well trained dogs can find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. Leashed dogs can not be stolen. Dogs are stolen for all kinds of disgusting reasons, abuse, puppy mills, research and used as bait dogs. Leashed dogs are easier to keep an eye on if they make a mess. Regardless if the dog is loose or not you are responsible for cleaning up after them. Leashed dogs can t get lost! It s the best way to keep them safe and avoid tragedy. Leashing your dog lessens the possibility of a fight. Just because your dog is friendly doesn't mean other dogs they encounter are. A leashed dog lessens the chance that they will eat something poisonous. Leashed dogs won t be a pest to other people. Not everyone is a dog person. It is polite to keep your dog out of the neighbors yards and not let them run up and greet everyone they see. Leashed dogs won t be the cause of an accident. Even if your dog doesn't get hit by the car, a car swerving to miss your dog may get into an accident. Leashed dogs lessen the chance of a bite. All dogs have the possibility of biting. Leashing your dog prevents wildlife attacks. Keeping them beside you greatly reduces that chance. Leashed dogs are less likely to get into danger. A city dog may not be used to the great outdoors. They could encounter strong currents, loose rocks on a cliff or hunting traps. Leashed dogs can t damage property. You can be held liable if your dog damages someone elses property in any way. Dogs can cause all kinds of trouble in someone elses yard before you track them down.

Page 7 Living With Wildlife A continuing series on local wildlife Facts about Deer Please Don t Feed the Deer Surfside Homeowners Association understands you have a soft heart and good intentions, but feeding deer is not in their best interests, or yours. Depending on what you feed them, deer may actually be harmed by your feeding. Some foods will kill them within a few days or debilitate them enough to be easy targets for predators and automobiles. Feeding is a way of domesticating deer. Tame deer create a host of other problems. Because they no longer fear people, they become vulnerable to hunters. They are emboldened to eat the shrubs in your vicinity. They will bring more deer into your yard and more deer ticks. And, concentrations of deer attract coyotes and wolves who will kill your pets along with the deer. Deer adapt very easily to people, but they don t need to be fed by them. They survive fine on their own. Better, in fact. Usually the weather controls deer populations, but deer fed by people increase regardless of the weather. This leads to overpopulation and disease. Deer browsing in the back yard may be charming, but Lyme disease and road kill are not. Please don t feed the deer; let nature do its job. Source: CAI

Page 8 PIEROGI CLASS The Community Relations Committee's Pierogi cooking class at the Oysterville school last Saturday was hosted by Louise Purdin. 12 students learned to mix and roll dough, prepare the potato & cheese, then fill and pinch the dumplings for boiling. We made close to 12 dozen, then cooked and served them with sour cream and onion/butter sauce. Everyone took some home supposedly to share. Watch the for more cooking events with the CCR!

Page 11 Architectural Committee Just a reminder if you are planning on installing a fence or a shed, a garage or a house or even doing a little remodeling all building plans must be submitted to the Architectural Committee prior to any construction. The committee usually meets weekly on Tuesdays at 9 a.m., dependent upon if there s anything on the agenda. All applicants are encouraged to attend the meeting (if possible) to answer any questions that may arise. The building packets are on our website at or you can pick one up from the business office. Two (2) sets of plans must be submitted to the committee. Once approved, you will get a copy of the plans that have been stamped so you can take them to the county for their approval. For more detailed information on the Architectural Committee duties and guidelines you can find them on our website or call the business office with any questions.
