The All-Orp The Official Publication of The United Orpington Club Fall 2012 Dedicated to all Orpingtons large fowl and bantam and to the breeders if this fine fowl Presidents Message As I write this for the fall newsletter it s the last of August. In western Oklahoma we had a very week about 2 or 3 weeks ago hit us. On Monday 108, 112, 115, 114, 113 and 108 and on Sunday we had a cool front come through and it was like 85. On two of those hot days we didn t have any wind, I wet down around my pens and if the wind blows it works ok. I lost a lot that week. I think I lost like 15 of the chocolate bantams, I don t think the English type bird s does heat very good. Seem like there is always someone calling or ing wanting to know where to find birds, chicks or eggs. This is good to have more folks getting into orps. I sent member Fred in Iowa some chicks for his little ones to grow out and be there 4-H project to show at their county fair. He sent me pics and you might have seen them on the board. Now this is what it s all about. To see the smiles on their face is priceless. We have become sister clubs with England and the Aussies. It means we will send them our newsletters and we will get there s. I wrote a deal for their newsletter and we should be getting some from them. I m sure Christina will tell you all the stuff on that. Thanks to her for getting the ball rolling and the board passing it. There is some talk about trying to get the chocolate bantam into the standard, if you might be interested please get in touch with Christina or myself. I do think they might have a chance. They will have to be crossed with our US black bantams hard for 5 years to pull it off. Remember to attend those county and state fairs, this is where many people see these birds, ask questions and get interested in having poultry. I m sure I have forgotten something I wanted to say, I ll get it next time. INSIDE THIS ISSUE Presidents Message 1 Vice Presidents Message 1 Secretary Message 2 Recording secretary 3 Treasurer Report 3 Crystal White Orpingtons 4&5 Member ads 8 Australian Club 7 Members write 6 Vice Presidents Message Well here we go again fighting the heat and trying to find ways to cool our birds. Heat stress has undesirable effects on our birds even if they live. Egg production goes down and of course those birds that we are conditioning for shows just absolutely stop growing and putting on weight. There is a lot of research that would show the life expectancy of the bird is lowered Secretary Message as the birds feel the stress of heat even though they survive. Fall shows coming up soon and our birds look not so good but maybe they will pull it out in the last quarter. Out club is growing well and I would like to remind everyone to get their dues sent in. If anyone has questions about the club or Orpingtons, I will be glad to assist in answering those questions and if I can't then we will research the issue and try to get you an answer. Good luck to everyone with your birds and I look forward to seeing you at the shows. Roy J. Autrey "the chickendoc" Don Chandler
Page 2 Secretary Message Hello UOC members, It has been a somewhat mild summer as far as heat goes. We started out cool and wet. We have been running in the mid to upper 90 s most days and it has finally cooled down into the 80 s. With having higher heat for our area and no rain, everything dried out. When I walk on areas of my lawn it sounds as if I am walking on gravel. I am hoping we get rain soon! There was a huge fire seven or so miles east of Cle Elum. Several people lost their homes. It was scary to see the smoke rolling over the hills in the distance. We have a lookout point right behind our property. From there at night, you could see hot spots flare up. They finally were able to get the fire contained. My family was lucky to not be impacted by the fire. I have been busy helping friends that were impacted. It feels as though I have been away from my computer forever. Thanks to everyone for ing me that was concerned! I do appreciate it. I would also like to announce that the United Orpington Club, has become sister clubs with the Orpington Club of Australia & The Orpington Club of the UK. What this means is, we share our newsletter and information (happenings, etc.) and in turn they share there's. Each club also sponsors awards for one another. We have been talking back and forth for months. The vote was taken by the officers and directors. Linking together formally is a great way to learn more about the breed and what is going on with Orpingtons around the world. In this edition is a word from the Australian Orpington Club. I hope everyone enjoys the knowledge we will learn from each other. Welcome! Tricia Pittman has an idea to take donations for UOC junior members. Similar to a trust fund. Giving the children incentives if they exhibited birds and also paying for their membership to the UOC and possibly the APA and ABA junior programs. There would be several mores details to work out. This is just the beginning of her idea. I would like to hear what the membership thinks of this? I think it is wonderful way to get the All- Orp Juniors involved and rewarded the ones that have been involved the whole time. Right now we have 159 members. Keep in mind when you are at the next show or poultry event to mention the UOC. I would love to meet the goal of On page four and five I have typed up an old article about the famous Crystal White Orpingtons. Thanks Harry and Gayle for providing the information!! Please look at your address label and if you are expired or getting close to expiring please renew your dues. You can mail me a check or money order or go to the website and pay with PayPal. If paying by PayPal there is a fee involved. Anyone that wants their newsletters by only please contact me. This saves the club a lot of money on supplies and postage. In turn we can use those funds for show prizes, etc. If anyone has pictures or articles you would like to see in upcoming All- Orps please contact me. Let s have a great fall show season. Get out there and show your Orpingtons. Christina Korfus Buff Orpington Bantam, Old Cock. Best SCCL at the Illinois state fair. Exhibited by; Jon Alden. Bred by Doug Akers Photo: Jon Alden
All-Orp Recording Secretary Message We just got back from 5 days at the Minnesota State Fair 4-H Livestock Encampment. While there we did interviewing, organized and ran the Poultry Poster competition, worked in the judging ring, helped judge the Chicken BBQ contest and assisted in getting pictures and sending out thank yous to plaque sponsors. In the Bantam breeding pens, there was a nice trio of White Orpingtons which received a blue ribbon. Zachary and Alyssa Weber, grandchildren of UOC member Luverne Bergs, showed breeding trios of LF Orpingtons. Zachary received a blue ribbon on his nice pen of LF White Orps. Alyssa was one of only 6 out of 44 4-Hers showing LF Breeding pens to be called back for final judging with a flashy looking trio of LF Buff Orpingtons. UOC member, Beau Schacherer was also called back on his LF Buff Orpingtons and went on to win the Reserve Champion LF Breeding Pen. Orpingtons put on a good showing at the Minnesota State Fair Livestock Encampment. We hope everyone is making plans to attend the UOC National Meet in Hutchinson, Minnesota, Oct , The showroom will be open Friday, Oct 26 from 11 AM to 10 PM. There will be over $400 in cash awards plus plaque and ribbons. There will be special plaques in memory of Cecil Moore for the Champion LF Black and White. 4 Page 4 Crystal White Orpingtons Reprinted from poultry success volume by staff correspondence We take pleasure in illustrating on this page the beautiful 1907 Madison Square Garden the first prize Crystal White Orpington cockerel which was also the first and special prize winner at Chicago in This bird was bred by Mr. Kellerstrass at the famous Kellerstrass Farm. Kansas City MO. We also show a typical Crystal White Orpington winner and layer bred by Mr. Kellerstrass. It is not too much to say that Mr. Kellerstrass is now easily one of the leading and most successful breeders in America and has perhaps during the past two or three years raised more good prize winning birds on his farm of something over forty acres located near Kansas City, MO., devoted exclusively to the raising of White Orpingtons than any other breeder on this continent. The Kellerstrass Farms are not only producing thousands of fine species of White Orpingtons each year. But are selling these, not only in all parts of America, but making shipments to all parts of the world. Reference has been made frequently in the poultry press as well as in the leading dailies of the country, to a sale of some choice birds made by Mr. Kellerstrass to Madame Paderewski. These birds were sent to the country estate of Madame Paderewski at Riond Bosson. On Lake Geneva, Morges Switzerland as the foundation for a great prize winning strain of birds for the leading shows of Europe and Great Britain. We are just in receipt of a copy of an original letter received by Mr. Kellerstrass from Leonard W. Lott of New York of recent date, which will be read with considerable interest by our readers in this connection. Earnest Kellerstrass Esq., Kansas City, MO., My Dear Mr. Kellerstrass: - Last week I received an interesting eight-page letter from Madame Paderewski and believe you will be concerned to know that the pen of Crystal White Orpingtons and doing well, and in Madame s words, I already have nine beautiful chickens that fill my heart with joy whenever I look at them. Some of the other varieties that Madame Paderewski purchased in this country are not satisfactory and it does seem disgraceful, no, dishonest to impose her All- Orp confidence. In addition to being a true fancier, Madame Paderewski is exerting every possible effort in producing an entirely new variety suitable for the climate and conditions of Poland, her native country. If her poultry manager, Mr. Archer is successful in originating such a breed, the birds will be sent to Poland where they need eggs and chickens so much as millions of Polish money go yearly abroad, spent on the very same products which in Denmark- a country ten times smaller than Poland-brings millions to its inhabitants. Would write you further but must catch the train to the Paterson N.J. show. Close with the information that Madame Pederewski will return to America shortly. Yours, Leonard W. Lott, N. Y. No bird ever produced in America has been exhibited before as many people and has been written up, not only in poultry journals, but the leading dailies and other publications of America as Peggy, the famous $10,000 White Orpington hen bred and owned by Mr. Kellerstrass. Peggy is said to be the Mrs. Vanderbilt of the chickens of the United States. Mr. Kellerstrass values Peggy at $10,000 and refused a cash offer from Madame Paderewski of $5,000 for this bird alone. Five of her children constitute that pen Mr. Kellerstrass sold to Madame Paderewski for $7,500 Peggy is 97.3 perfect. Because of the unquestionable supremacy which Peggy enjoys in the hen world a magnificent portrait of her has been painted by a celebrated western artist, and is the only hen which
All-Orp Crystal White Orpingtons. from pg. 4 was ever known to enter a state house for honorable position among its governors; this portrait being hung in the Missouri state house at Jefferson City among the pictures of other individuals who have helped to make it famous. It will interest our readers to know that Peggy was recently the honoree of a hen party, held at the capital of Missouri, at the climax of which a solid gold leg band set with diamonds was presented to her. Mr. Kellerstrass has not been making exhibits at any of the poultry shows this season entering for prize money, leading it entirely to his customers throughout the country to enter the birds they purchased from him or hatched from eggs he furnished, giving in this way his customers an opportunity to take the leading prize winning positions with their birds at the shows in all parts of the country. Peggy and a number of her children have, however, been exhibited at a number of the leading state fairs throughout the country, particularly through the southern states and at a number of the leading poultry shows simply as features of attraction to draw crowds. For those exhibits in every case Mr. Kellerstrass has been paid a handsome sum by each of the fair or show organizations, and in making these exhibits has accomplished what no other breeder ever before attempted, namely: received payment for exhibiting a group of birds. In every case this exhibit has created the greatest of attention, drawing thousands upon thousands to see the wonderful Peggy and her children; and the birds have been illustrated and written up by leading daily papers in the principal cities in the country in a way that no other poultry or just chickens have ever been honored or given publicity before. It is probably true during the last four months In these exhibits that Peggy has been interviewed and seen by perhaps several millions of people in various sections of the country and has undoubtedly appeared before more eyes than any other chicken of any description ever before produced in this country. One of the leading dailies, recently commenting on Peggy, has the following to say: But, like everything else, the poultry business has undergone a great change within the past score of years and this fact is being brought home in a Page 5 startling manner through the exhibit of Peggy. From a sort of side issue on the farm poultry raising has developed into an important industry, and a hen with the blue blood in her veins is today worth more than the entire flock of half a dozen farms in the old days. The man who has perhaps done more to develop the fine poultry business in America than any other is Mr. Earnest Kellerstrass, Of Kansas City, Mo. The Kellerstrass farm is acknowledged to be the finest of its kind in the world, and its owner is without a doubt the best known poultry breeder in the country today. On this farm there are about five thousand chickens ranging in value from $10 to $10,000 each. The Kellerstrass birds, as already indicated, this season are not entering to competition at the shows, but are exhibited for the purpose of advancing the interest of Orpingtons and to show the people of the different state the best flock of birds of this class in the entire world. Another one of the famous Kellerstrass birds is Princess Louise, a prize hen that laid 236 eggs in one year and is valued at $1,500

Judge said He probably would have been Grand Champion if Tyler would have shown him. Second picture is of Sierra with her Champion Bantam hen. She got a second look for Grand champion but didn't make it. Can't thank you enough for what these chickens have done for my kids. Oh if I didn't tell you on the phone hens and roosters show against each other, not separate. It was 104 today so I took them inside if they are not bright enough let me know and I will get some better ones when it cools down next week. Thanks again. 7 All-Orp Australian Orpington Club Hello Orpington lovers across the sea The season is about to change to Spring in Australia. At the moment it is August and the Australian Orpington Breeders are busy pairing up their fowls to hopefully breed a champion for next years shows. The Orpington Fowl is enjoying an increase in numbers right across the country with the Orpington Club also benefitting by having a vibrant membership. They hold an Orpington Club of Australia National Show every year and intend to supplement it with a Northern State and a Southern State Feature Show. In a country as vast as Australia it is hard to have anything national because of the distances between cities so the two features accommodate for the out of the way places. In the last few years the shows held by the Orpington Club have had very good attendance. The National Orpington Club Show last year had 373 Orpingtons. ( Bantams and Large fowl plus coloured non cook colours) This year the Northern Feature displayed 176 Orpingtons, the Southern Feature had 132 and the Canberra Royal National all breeds show had 190. The Orpington Club Australia has 80 financial members at the moment with plenty more to come, ( the financial period has just begun ) We have a close relationship with the UK Orpington Clubs. Both the Orpington Club and the Buff Orpington club share newsletters and year books. We occasionally swap trophies as well via the post. It adds a new dimension to receive a trophy from overseas. This has given the Australian Orpington Fanciers a huge benefit. The swapping of show results, photos of winning birds and the friendships made have been a great experience. We are looking forward to sharing our Orpington shows, results and photos with you via the internet. There is a club web page that is easily accessible. It can be found at, Page 7 We have a club newsletter that comes out four times a year. We will also be happy to send this to you to feature anything from it in your newsletter. Thank you for sharing your club with us, we are looking forward to seeing your fowls featured in our newsletter in News from our Sister Club section. Jack Gilliland District #12 I am happy to say that we have had the most rain this summer than we have had in 10 yrs. everything is nice and green and thankfully we only had a few extremely hot days. I did lose two hens to the heat. The young ones tend to take the heat better. Due to a mild winter this past year we have lots of (Skeeters). This poses a greater chance of fowl pox which is a lot tougher on the younger birds than the adults. Some people try and vaccinate. Also they use flocks of chickens in FL and Al to test for West Nile Virus to see if it is prevalent in the area as it is carried by Skeeters too. They have been announcing on our news here that it is in our area. It does not affect Chickens, just horses and people. We will have several shows coming up soon in our District starting in December. It should be a very exciting year. I am hoping to show a few if they are in good shape then. I hope to see many of you there so we can visit. I look forward to seeing your birds. On a personal note, I have had a few health issues during the summer but am so thankful to say the Good Lord has brought me through again. Life is such a great adventure. Never a dull moment. My grandchildren are a great blessing to me and Papa. We are off to Guatemala on another mission trip and when we get back I am going to start hatching a few chicks.
