1 Proud owners, top animals and striking breeds Part 2 The Crossroads of America Poultry Club show 2006 Text and photos: courtesy Poultry Press The Crossroads of America Poultry Club show finally became a reality on November , 2006 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds at Indianapolis, Indiana. What started out as a dream, a lot of discussion, a lot of work and a dream come true finally happened. Americas National along with being an exhibitorfriendly atmosphere finally arrived and we had hoped for a 10,000 bird show and surpassed that with 11,640 birds. We want to thank the American Bantam Association and American Poultry Association for allowing us to hold your national meets. Along with that, we want to thank all the breed clubs and all the other clubs that had meets with us, thank you. The exhibitors started arriving on Wednesday, and Thursday was absolutely a mad house. We had signs on each end of the rows to tell what was in each row. Everything was in alphabetical order according to breed and varieties. From the beginning of section A to section C it was approximately four hundred feet long. Now you know why everyone looked exhausted. It was hard to ask people to take a week s vacation from work to do this show but that s exactly what a lot of you did. We moved in there on Monday night and I arrived back home on Monday AM the following week. Our judges for the open show (left) and Junior Show (right below). They had their hands bull with the number of birds that they had to judge. They all did an outstanding job. This show was a learning experience for new people but equally for those of us that have been showing for a lot of years. If you wanted to see birds that you have heard about but never seen then, this was the place
2 to be. As most of you know, when you read Poultry Press, You see names all the time and you finally get to meet and see. You finally got to put a face with that name. Wasn t it great to be able to meet so and so, after all those years? I ve been blessed all those twenty plus years traveling all over the country covering shows that I ve been able to meet so many people over the years. Left: One of the awards tables. It took four tables just to get all the plaques on. It was an eye catcher and all of us received a lot of compliments about the plaques. The plaques were for best of breed and reserve of breed. There were two given to each breed club on bantams and large fowl if they had both. I know the sales area was very busy during the three day show and I can t imagine how many dollars exchanged hands during the weekend. This is what this show was all about, bringing people together from all parts of the country and Canada. This way people could see what they are buying instead of sending a letter and money through the mail, and waiting for the birds to be shipped. You know what you are getting there. The Super Grand Champion of the show and Grand Champion Waterfowl was the Brown African old male (photo right) by Bruised Acre Birds Tom Kernan. The Reserve Super Grand Champion of the show and Grand Champion Large Fowl was the Dark Brahma cock by Dan Delaney. (picture below) The grand champion trio of the show was the Brown Red Modern Bantam (photo right, the male only) young trio by Tom Anderson. The Reserve Grand Champion trio of the show was the White Plymouth Rock Bantam young trio (photo left) by Bruce and Lowell Sherman.
3 The Grand Champion Large Fowl trio was the RC Rhode Island Reds by Adrian and Mary Ann Rademacher. The Reserve Grand Champion Large Fowl trio was the White Crested Black Polish Young trio by Joel and Ellen Henning. The Grand Champion Waterfowl trio was the Black Cayuga (photo left) young trio by White Feather Farm Chris LaGerould. The Reserve Grand Champion Waterfowl trio was the White Call (photo right below) young trio by Charlie Hodum. The Grand Champion display of the show was the White Cochin bantams (photo right) Bruce Robinson. The Grand Champion Large Fowl display was the SC Light Brown Leghorn by Don and Miki Schrader. The Grand Champion Guinea Display was Lavenders by Duane and Phyllis Urch. The Reserve Grand Champion Guinea display was Pearls by Don Perrin. The Grand Champion Turkey display was Narragansetts by Danny and Norma Padgett. by From all our working committees and all the workers that has anything to do with the show, we say thank you for showing at Americas National and supporting the future of the fancy the Juniors. (photos left and right) It was a lot of work but it was well worth it because it was so successful. Thank you to each and everyone of you for showing, visiting, donating awards, sponsoring the show, and setting up and tearing down. We appreciate each of you. Until next time, best to all. Below follows some more photos of the birds at the show.
