1 Scents & Nonscents August, Things An AKC Agility Trial Secretary Wants You to Know Teaching People and their Dogs for over 50 years. Inside this issue: Herding Seminar 2 News Notes 3 June Minutes, con t 4 Call for Stewards! 5 The Pres Sez June Meeting Minutes Brags Double Q July Meeting Minutes July Minutes, con t Meeting Schedules Back Cover Page Know the rules! The current Regulations for Agility Trials can be downloaded off the AKC website. And I have often have some extra copies that I am happy to share with new exhibitors especially as well. 2. Fill out those entry forms completely and legibly, making especially sure that your dog s registration number and your phone number and address are correct. And please double check the amount of the entry fees you owe and who the check should be made out to! 3. Trial entry services such as Oaklines and LabTestedOnline, which quickly print out completed entry forms ready for the exhibitor to sign and drop in the mail, are wonderful for both exhibitors and trial secretaries. Oaklines is free (the site owner requests donations via PayPal), and Lab- TestedOnline charges a $10 annual subscription fee. It only takes a few minutes to set up an account and input your dog s and your own information, and then all you need to do when you want to generate an entry form is enter the name of the show, dates, classes entered, and entry amount, and hit print. Completely and accurately filled out every time, and easy to read to boot! 4. If you decide to enter a trial electronically, via an online entry service such as the one offered by AKC, please make doubly sure you fill in all the information fields correctly. I recently had an electronic entry I was downloading crash my trial software program because the owner forgot to include the dog s height measurement and jump height. Another exhibitor accidentally put the name of her dog s dam where the owner s name was supposed to go, the end result being that the dog ended up being listed twice in my database, which wouldn t allow me to input entry information under either one until I had tracked down and eliminated all the redundant information. Check those trial entry confirmations I send you, and let me know of any changes or corrections as soon as possible (it is always much easier to fix things before the trial!). The most important items for me to have recorded correctly are the dog s registration number and the classes/jump height entered. 5. Keep careful track of the qualifying legs and titles you earn, so that you can enter your dog in the correct classes. You don t need a fancy record book hold onto your qualifying ribbon labels and the summary of qualifying scores that you receive by after the trial, or even take a snapshot of the posted results with your cell phone. And you can access your dogs AKC records for free simply go to set up an account using your address and a password, and then you may check your dogs records at any time from a computer or mobile device by signing in and clicking Manage My Dogs. 6. I really wish the AKC would do away with Novice A classes in agility (just agility--obedience and rally are fine). Not that I have anything against newbies I love them! but there are way too many people losing qualifying legs/titles because they do not understand the rules concerning eligibility for this class. In a nutshell: neither the dog nor the handler (who must own or co-own the dog, or be a member of the owner s household) can have ever earned an agility title, ANY agility title. And, as soon as the dog earns an agility title, ANY agility title (including FAST and T2B), it must be entered in Novice B in all its remaining Novice classes from then on in. So say your Novice A dog earns a Novice FAST title, but not Standard or JWW, your first weekend out. You must then enter him in Novice B in Standard and Jumpers for the remainder of his Continued on p. 4.

3 Newsnotes From the Neighborhood Your Editor The SDOC Agility Fun Match is scheduled for Saturday, August 29 at the Sheriff s County Posse grounds. There will be 2 rings running at all times, Standard and Jumpers. There will be a Novice course and an Advanced level course in each ring, designed by AKC Judge, Linda Kipp. Each participant is allowed 2 minutes per run with Course Walk Thrus each hour. Food and toys are allowed as long as no food is dropped in the ring! Registration forms may be found on the SDOC webpage. This is a great opportunity to practice in a trial environment prior to the SDOC September agility trials. Don t forget that the SDOC Obedience Fun Match will be held August 30, also at the Sheriff s Posse Grounds. This is just one week before SDOC s Labor Day Trials and is being held at the same venue as our Trials so this is a perfect time and place to practice. Conformation practice and CGC/CGCA testing are also being offered in addition to obedience and rally! Entry forms are on the Club website. Also, remember that we need lots of Stewards for these matches as well as the Trials so be sure to let Dede know if you can help out at either one! Her phone number is ! SDOC WEBSITE ADDRESS IS Be Sure to Check the Website for complete class information, class applications and special updates. Nosework drill will resume at 3:00 pm on Wednesdays starting on August 19. The Rio Grande Valley Golden Retriever Club is holding a Yard Sale on September 12 from 8 a.m. to 12 noon. Location is: 9417 Freedom Way NE. Should be some good stuff there so be sure to check it out. Lobo Lure Coursing will be holding their Fall Coursing Ability Tests in Rotary Park in Bernalillo on September 26th and 27th (2 tests/day), and then the following week on October 3rd and 4th in Alamogordo in conjunction with the Chaparral KC all breed shows and obedience trials. The premiums should be out soon on their website, newmexico-sighthounds.jigsy.com/events If you ve never done this before with your dog, give it a try! You MUST have proof of vaccinations which must be presented on the first night of you class at SDOC. If you do not have them, you ll need to go home and get them, and you may miss the first and very important class. One good way to keep them will you is to make a copy and keep it in your vehicle. Another is to take a picture with your cell phone and keep it on that. What would we do without cell phones?! The October dog shows in Los Lunas have a new superintendant (Foy Trent) and a new name: The Cottonwood Valley Long Weekend. The shows are being held October 9-11 this year, and will still include obedience and rally! Check Foy Trent s website at for the premium. Training Year (per the SDOC Training Regulations) For these purposes, the training year will be from December 1 to November 30 of the following year. The total hours of any class which begins on or before December 1 will be credited to the following training year. Page 3

If in doubt, enter Novice B! 7. You can always ask, but please don t be upset with me if the answer is no. I ve had exhibitors that did not realize until the morning of the first day of the trials that their dog was in the wrong class or the wrong jump height, and I ve fixed it for them. On the other hand, if it s not something I am required to change (i.e., not my mistake) and I am too busy, or if it s something I absolutely cannot do (e.g., changing your dog to a lower height class or switching between regular and preferred midway through the trials), yelling at me or running off to appeal to the judges or trial chairman isn t going to help you. 8. I cannot change anything that is written on a scribe sheet without the judge s okay. So if there is a mistake on your scribe sheet, there is not much the secretary can do about it, especially if enough time has lapsed so that the scribe and the judge no longer remember your run. Likewise, there is nothing I can do about a bad call on the judge s part. If you have a concern about your run or your score, try to talk with the judge as soon as possible. 9. FAST classes are a lot of fun. From a trial secretary s standpoint, however, not so much. It easily takes twice as long to score FAST than any other class, and both scribing and scoring errors Scents & Nonscents

5 Call For Stewards By Dede Brownstein On September 5 th, 6 th and 7 th, SDOC will be hosting our Labor Day Obedience and Rally Trials. In order to have a successful event, we will need volunteers to serve as stewards. Why steward? Here are two important reasons. First, you will perform an indispensable service to SDOC. After all, we cannot have a trial without stewards. Second, you will have an opportunity to personally benefit from this experience. There are many important points you ll learn about which will be of value to you as you continue to compete in Obedience and/or Rally. 1. You ll find out about ring procedures. 2. You ll become more familiar with the intricacies of the exercises at the level in which you re stewarding. You ll have a chance to interact with judges, which can not only be really fun but will make you more comfortable when you show because you ll realize that they re human beings with faults and failings just like everyone else. Plus you can watch your fellow SDOC members and exhibitors go through their paces close up and, albeit silently, cheer them on. You ll even get a free lunch! There are 3 stewards for each obedience ring and 4 to 5 for Rally, so take your pick and add your name to the Steward Sign up sheets at SDOC or call Dede at I cannot encourage you enough to take advantage of this opportunity. You ll be glad you did! are very common. That s the reason FAST scribe sheets are usually printed onto NCR paper (those yellow carbonless copies) so that exhibitors can check for themselves after their runs. 10. And, speaking of NCR paper, those yellow copies are provided to exhibitors for a reason. They cost extra and typically need to be sent out to be printed, so if a club is nice enough to provide them, please take them and check them for accuracy immediately after your run. 11. Finally, keep in mind that agility trials are supposed to be fun for both you and your dog! I m including two of my all-time favorite quotes from judges briefings. The first is, Be fair to your dog. You entered this trial; the dog is your guest. And then, Remember that, no matter what kind of a run you are having, there will come a day when you would gladly trade every ribbon and award, and even that MACH bar, for one last run with your dog. (I can t remember who said the first one, but the latter quote is from Blair Kelly. Thank you Blair truer words were never spoken.) 6 The Prez Sez By Jeff Robb It's August and things are starting to get busy. We have both our Agility and Obedience Fun Matches this month. Please contact the Fun Match Chairs and offer to help (Lisa Frankland for Obedience and Phyllis Collier for the Agility match). We always need help setting up and packing up for the matches. The German Shepherd Club is also having a Fun Match, Sunday 8/9 so be sure to take advantage of all these matches to get ready for the Fall Trials. To order SDOC t-shirts and sweatshirts, contact Estelle Metz Stay warm or be cool, in style! Speaking of the Trials, They are coming up quickly as well Obedience over the Labor Day weekend and Agility mid-september. The Obedience Trial Chair is Dora Cressey and Melanie Mead is our Agility Trial Chair. Please contact them and volunteer, even if only for an hour or 2. Again, always need help setting up and packing up after the Trials, we are in special need of stewards for the Obedience Trial - please contact Dede Brownstein. Hoping for good runs for everyone. A few weeks ago a small group got together and replaced some of the training room mats and retaped the entire room. Many thanks to: John Clendenin, Len Stans, Maggie Gee, Jane Winkler and Toi Tschohl. Looks much better and torn mats have been replaced, so tripping is much less of a hazard. Hope I didn't forget anyone. We continue to work on improvements for safety and security. If you have experience in this area, please contact me (jeffreym.robb@verizon.net or Suzanne Ratchner (ratchner34@msn.com) to help. Our Nose Work Instructor resigned, so classes are canceled for the time being. A group is working on developing a plan for classes in the near future stay tuned to our web site/yahoo list/facebook for developments. Finally, it's time to think about the election of next years officers/board members. Betty Pearson is organizing the Nominating committee. If you are willing to serve in one of the positions, or know someone who is willing, please contact Betty. Page 6 Scents & Nonscents

9 DOUBLE Q SDOC Board Meetings are held on the Agility Yard Work Day -- Calling all Agility Enthusiasts and Dog Aficionados The Agility group will be having a work day on August 22d and want (i.e., NEED) your help. We will be building new jumps for the yard and will even show you how to build your own jumps!! Early is always better in the heat, so let's start at 9:00 am and hope to be out by 12:00. Hope to see you there. Please ALWAYS check doors! (And other things!) The most serious thing for the club is the door issue. All of us are responsible for checking all of the doors every time we leave. Whether we think that we have used them or not, just give a yank on both the training room door and the restroom door as you leave. That simple thing could save the club great losses! The other two issues that continue to plague are: *The poop problem: All of us need to take a quick walk around the perimeter and pick up poop before we leave the field, every time. Personally, I don't think it is intentional negligence. I think we get distracted, dog wanders off, we don't notice... Litter and weeds can be added to the poop collection and we will all appreciate it! *Water bowls: Please dump them out when you leave. Birds and rodents and their droppings need to be discouraged from the field for both sanitary and dog-focus reasons! *Tunnels and equipment: Please make sure that all equipment is either safe to use or inaccessible when you leave! Sorry if this seems like nagging, but it is really important for the safety of our dogs and our club! And a final note! Let's all remember that we are all volunteers. Basically, training directors and head instructors who teach year-round receive the same benefits as first time assistants. That is the way it should be. That is the way to encourage the growth of our program. It just helps if we mix in a little patience, kindness, and attention to details. And a final, final note, thank you all for what you do for the club and the agility program. We do absolutely depend on you all! And let's not forget a big Thank You to Laurel Drew for taking care of the newsletter for us. Thank you, Laurel! Peggy Chandler & Barbara Petersen SDOC Agility Co-Directors chuckchandler1@comcast.net & Bep2003@aol.com & Tuesday prior to General Membership meetings at the SDOC Training Building.
