FROM THE PRESIDENTS DESK Our September meeting turned out to be a great day, despite the damp weather. It was good to see a few members made the effort to get into the Rock n Roll theme on the day. A good roll up, including new member Greg Hollingworth, joined in the impromptu discussion on various problems breeders have experienced with Peter giving example of his gecko trap. Seems a few members on the coast are experiencing the perils of these introduced pests. The table show was once again well supported with our Trainee Judges Geoff & James casting their eye over the 2 classes and providing their views on the birds benched. A good discussion was had on the colour of the Alumina Cock benched by James and the various forms of the Black mutations. It is always a pleasure to visit Peter & Judy and once again his resident flocks of Chestnut Breasted, Double Bars and Red Brows paid a visit to his garden feeder. This month we venture to the Pettigrew s for our Annual Auction/Sale Day. This is your opportunity to share those spare quality birds you have with fellow members to assist with their own breeding program and if you are looking for that special bird or pair to finalise your breeding team for the year; here s your chance. This year we will may run a slightly different format to the auction. Details will be finalised on the day. Come along to share with fellow members and grab that something special. This year we have been invited to join the Carnival Show to be held on Sunday 23rd October at Jimboomba in conjunction with fellow specialist bird clubs (see ad in ZT). The purpose of this day is to bring everybody together into one location once a year, is primarily based on families and friends and building and forging friendships and creating new ones that will further develop our bird clubs into the future for everybody. It is planned we will hold a display of all the current mutations to promote the club and the Zebra Finch Fancy. We would be looking for members donations of pairs of birds for the display. If you can assist in anyway please contact Paul or myself for more details. Next month we will have a social outing to the Oxley Common. Thanks to Paul & Kym for sourcing this new venue. There are full barbeque and undercover facilities. So why not come along enjoy the social activities and the local bird habitat. More details in November s Zebra Times. At the September meeting is was decided that from January 2017 your Zebra Times will be delivered in electronic format only. Please ensure that you provide your current address with your membership renewal if you wish to continue receiving Zebra Times. The committee is also looking into the club becoming incorporated. Currently we meet many of the criteria but there will be some changes to how the club operates in the future to become compliant with the new laws. This will be share with the membership once finalised. Now with the breeding season in full swing I expect we are all busy ringing our 2016 champions. Don t forget now more than ever our birds require daily attention and tit-bits to ensure the young develop to their full potential. It is also a time of frustration as some pairs fail to perform as we expect. Don t give up, return to the basics and things should turn around. Page 3
Minutes for the SEQZFS 18 September 2016 General Meeting. The meeting was held at the residence of Peter and Judy James and was themed 'Rock and Roll'. Morning tea was served on arrival and the table show was set up. James Castle brought his own marquee and set up a sales table of bird related items. The table show was judged first by trainee judge Geoff Stolberg assisted by James Castle. Class 1, black series, was won by Jenny Stolberg while class 2 was won by Tim Hartung. An impromptu discussion followed on James Castles' alumina cock body colouring. This was followed by a general discussion on current breeding problems being experienced by members. A talk was given with a demonstration by Peter James on manufacturing a simple sticky trap for gecko and cockroach problems. Lunch was served then prior to the meeting being opened. Tim Hartung opened the meeting at 1240hrs and thanked the hosts for their hospitality. He also thanked those members who had taken the trouble to attend with a rock and roll dress theme. New member Greg Hollingworth was also welcomed to his first meeting. The Attendance as per the attendance book (14). Apologies Rebecca Mason, Anthony Dean, Kev and Arlene Phillips. Minutes of the previous meeting...the Minutes of the August meeting appeared in the Zebra Times for members perusal. Moved... Ron Watt Seconded... Paul Williams that the minutes were a true record. Carried. Business arising from the minutes...the printing of the Zebra Times has been approved to be printed at the office of the Local State Member at Mt Omaney. Tim Hartung advised that an interstate judge, Sean Chandler from LMZFS, had been arranged along with the probable attendance of Shane Wright from VZFS, who will assist Sean as a trainee judge. President Tim also reminded members that a new show secretary was required at the upcoming AGM in January. Secretaries Report.. Inwards corro...reciprocal club mags, web enquiries, Fed '16 results. Carried. Reports... [A] Ring Steward...Kev Phillips was absent but had previously advised that the 2017 rings order had been placed. [B] Historian/Librarian... Nil. [C] Website... 5 Tim advised that the agenda item for a 5 year moratorium had been defeated, the 'frosted' and the 'opal' standards had been dropped. The president urged members to embark on a programme of breeding both red chested [greys] and opals. WAZFS at Mandurah Fed '17 would be displaying demonstration classes of both carabel cocks and hens and red chested zebras. Fed '17 would run from the 25th to the 28th August. President Tim also reported on the visit by Frederik and Karine Divert from France at Bathurst. Frederik had participated in the judging process as part of his research on zebras in Australia. Judges Panel rep Geoff Stolberg spoke briefly on the Fed '16 Judges Panel meeting. He said that his proposal of having 'trainee Fed Judges' assisting the normal 2 judges as a stepping stone from club accreditation to Fed accreditation was well received and would be at the discretion of the host club. Geoff Stolberg further advised that he had nominated himself as the coordinator responsible for the implementation of the proposed Federation Judges Training Manual, based on the current SEQZFS and WAZFS training manuals. Both Tim Hartung and Geoff Stolberg would produce separate reports for the next ZT magazine. John McMahon added that members could look at the Fed results and see where QLD was weakest. He encouraged members to work together to strengthen the weak classes. General Business [1] October Meeting...Members were reminded that good birds were required for the auction and to avoid bringing 'pet shop' birds as this did not improve the QLD team as a whole. The meeting would be at John and Robyn Pettigrews' and entries would be on the day. [2]...Members were reminded that September was the cut-off for any possible constitutional changes. Tim advised that he would be proposing that the magazine become electronic only and that membership remain as it currently is. The topic of incorporation was raised and discussed. President Tim Hartung advised that he had already made some preliminary enquiries and sought approval of the members to continue. Approved. October Meeting...This will be the normal Auction Day meeting at the home of John and Robyn Pettigrew. [3] Show Secretary.. Tim Hartung reminded members that Rebecca Mason cannot continue as show secretary due to family/work commitments. [4] Show Cage/Nest Box... Tim Hartung demonstrated the cardboard 'flat pack' show cage and nest boxes which had been brought over by our guests from France. Members were asked to consider whether they might be a viable alternative for our Fed '19. [5] Impromptu Presentation...Paul Williams made a presentation to the Hartung family for their 'dress contribution' to the meeting theme. Raffle [Pantry Item]---Winner Paul Williams. Lucky Door Draw...Winner Liz Ball. The next meeting will be at the Pettigrew residence. The meeting closed at 1430hrs. Page 5
Mount Morgan Ag Show 2016 Early August saw Duane and I organise the Cage Bird section at the Mount Morgan Show. I could not have done it without my right-hand man. Thank you so much for all your help Duane Sorensen with the organisation. A big thank you also goes to Rodney Gardiner (from Calliope,) and Clarry Horan (from Rockhampton,) who stepped up to help steward. You guys helped make the day a great success. Our member Dean Rodery did a marvellous job judging around 180 birds. Well done Dean. The champion zebra finch was owned by Clarry Horan who also managed to take out Grand Champion Bird of Show with a magnificent Java finch/sparrow. Congratulations Clarry he was a spectacular bird. (Unfortunately, the photo taken of the Champion Zeb did not turn out. Sorry about that.) I managed to take out the Champion Pairs with my stunning pair of Tri Colours. It was a good show and birds on the bench were once again of a high quality and standard. I would like to thank Rodney, Val, Clarry, Duane and Dean for a wonder and fun time. It is always a treat to get the gang together. By Karen Sorensen Page 6

ZEBRA FINCH STANDARDS A GUIDE TO The current Federation Show Standard recognises 21 Full Standards and 1 Interim Standard. Two of these standards form the basis upon which ALL other standards are classified; they being Grey & Fawn. We are excluding Whites in this assessment. All these standards are the effects of various mutations on the 2 base colours, Grey and Fawn, to produce the Standards we currently have. Of the 22 Show Standards there are 14 Colour Standards; these affect the various shades of colour and markings on the base colours, Grey and Fawn. These 14 Colour Standards are represented by only 5 individual mutations. The remaining 8 standards are Variety Standards represented by 7 individual mutations. Let me explain a little further. Consider our rivals in the bird world, the Budgerigar. It is represented in a myriad of colours but all are either Blue or Green based birds which have been affected by various factors to produce these colours. The Lutino is a green bird whereby all colour and markings have been removed to produce a yellow bird. The Albino is the blue equivalent. Spangle, Cinnamonwing, Pied (Dominant & Recessive) or Opaline can all be added to the Green or Blue based birds. They are still either Green or Blue birds affected by other factors (mutations) to produce the various colours. Our humble Zebra Finch is NO different; except we are dealing with Grey and Fawn. The following charts will help to explain. COLOUR STANDARDS The following 5 colour mutations combined with Grey &/or Fawn produce the 14 Colour Standards. GREY MUTATION FAWN Slate Recessive Dilute I Beige Dilute Blue Dominant Dilute Dark Cream (medium) Silver Dominant Dilute (light) Cream Marked White Sex Linked Par-Ino (dark) No equivalent classified Chestnut Flanked Sex Linked Par-Ino Cream Backed White (medium) Carabel (Interim Recessive Dilute II (dark) No equivalent classified Standard) No equivalent classified Recessive Dilute II Qld Isabel (medium) Alumina Recessive Dilute III Opal (to be classified) Page 10
VARIETY STANDARDS VARIETY Pied Grizzle Black Faced Black Bodied Black Fronted Charcoal Yellow Bill MUTATION Recessive Pied Recessive Grizzle Dominant Black (light) Dominant Black (dark) Recessive Black I Recessive Black II Yellow Bill The following 7 variety mutations can be combined with ANY of the above 14 Colour Standards. I have deliberately excluded the White mutation from the above groups as it could be argued it belongs in either group. Many Whites are Pied Whites which could mask many of the above mutations. Our current Show Standard does not recognise many of the combinations that exist or can be developed; Dilute CFW or as some call them Double Dilute is one such example. There are many more newer mutations being developed that would fall into the latter group of Variety Standards; Reds or George. Others such as Agate would fall into the Colour Standards group. Our overseas counterparts are fortunate to have many more mutations which can be combined to produce some wonderful combinations; Fawn-Orange Breasted-Black Breasted-Black Faced- Black-Cheeked-Isabel springs to mind. 13 Mount Larcom Show 2016 In June this year Duane and I travelled north for the Mount Larcom Ag Show. We have made this trip for the past three years now and must say it is well worth it. The bird section is organised by Rodney & Val Gardiner who do an amazing job each year. There were over 200 various birds to be judged by Kev O Callaghan who had his work cut out for him. The judge was very impressed with the quality of the birds benched especially the zebra finches. I was thrilled, to say the least, when one of my grey zebra cock birds took out Best Zebra, Champion Australian Finch and Grand Champion Bird of Show. (Unfortunately, this little fella did not make it to Fed 16 selections as he lost a toe somewhere along the line. Typical!) This is one Show where you are guaranteed to have a good laugh with friendly people and see a high standard of birds on show. We look forward to returning to Mount Larcom in By Karen Sorensen Page 13
