Of those 16,167 surgeries, 73% were for the public and TNVR (Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return) and the remainder were shelter animals. 4 Launched in 2014, Countdown 2 Zero is a public-private partnership between Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League, Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control, and the Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners. Its goal is to ensure that all adoptable animals in Palm Beach County are being saved by the year Learn more at Countdown2Zero.org Olivia s Fund A Critical Countdown 2 Zero Program Saving the Lives of Severely Injured Animals In 2011, Olivia was rescued from a terrible hoarding situation. She had severe medical issues from a lifetime of neglect and abuse. She had also been shot with a BB gun and needed emergency surgery to remove the BBs from her body. Thanks to generous and caring supporters, we were able to spend the thousands of dollars needed to save Olivia s life and find her the new home and loving family she deserved. In her honor, Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League created Olivia s Fund specifically dedicated to saving the lives of animals through special surgical and medical treatment. Tita New Hope for a Paralyzed Dog On November 11, 2016, someone abandoned Tita (a 6 year old Dachshund) at Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League. When we removed her from the crate she d been left in, we were alarmed to discover she had no use of her back legs. Our doctors took X-rays and discovered a severe problem with her spine. Her spinal cord was being squeezed by a massive herniated disc. Thanks to generous donations to Olivia s Fund, we were able to schedule Tita for surgery with one of the few board certified neurologists in South Florida capable of performing this type of spinal operation. The total cost: $4,000. Today, thanks to Olivia s Fund and compassionate donors, Tita is no longer paralyzed. She can walk once again. Still gaining her strength and mobility, Tita is recovering in the home of one of our wonderful foster care volunteers and goes to physical therapy several days a week. Tita With your help today, we can give hope to many more animals like Tita through Olivia s Fund. To make a donation, please call or Kim Hanson at k.hanson@peggyadams.org. If you wish to send a donation today using the enclosed envelope, please be sure to indicate that you would like your gift to support Olivia s Fund. 4 Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League

6 Mom Knows Best Kitten Season 2017 is about to begin in Palm Beach County. Here is what you can do to help save lives. We are at the start of Kitten Season: the time from early spring through late fall when cats mate and give birth to countless kittens. Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League is providing critical public awareness tips to help kittens, shelters and the community withstand the season. The abundance of litters throughout the community typically means too many kittens being brought to area shelters, even though it is best for newborn kittens to be left with their mothers. Most discoveries of newborn kittens do not call for human assistance and, in fact, no intervention is the best thing, said Heidi Nielsen, Assistant Director of the League. The goal is to keep the mother and kittens together to ensure the best chances for the kittens survival until the kittens are eating on their own and can be safely removed for socialization and adoption. Before jumping to the rescue, consider the following: In the first weeks of their lives, kittens need their mother s care and antibodies from her milk. As they grow, the mother will begin to give her kittens the critical training needed to survive on their own. Before concluding that the kittens have been abandoned, quietly observe from a safe distance to determine if the mother is present. The mother will continually stay with her litter for the first day or two after giving birth. Then, she will need to leave for short periods of time to find food for herself. If the mother is not present, she is most likely scouting for food and will return. A mother cat will instinctively move her nest of kittens. If a single, young kitten is spotted, it is likely that it is the first of the group to be moved to the new location or the last of the group to get moved from the old location. Do not interfere with the kittens or the space they are occupying. It is essential to not handle them, create shelter, or feed them as long as the mother is around. These interventions may cause the mother stress and possibly to abandon her family. Help by providing food and water to the mother. Be sure to place food and water far enough away from the nest so you do not disturb the mother and kittens or draw predators. Cats should be brought in for spay/neuter once the kittens are weaned. For details, visit PeggyAdams.org/found-kitten-resources and PeggyAdams.org/tnvr Following these simple measures will increase the survival rate of the kittens, allowing them to thrive in their natural environment. Additionally, it will allow local animal shelters to use their resources to further assist the current shelter population with the critical care they need and help place adoptable animals in homes. 7 Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League Celebrating Volunteers! Volunteer Manager, Tara Pregnolato, opened ceremonies honoring League volunteers with these words, The oldest operating lighthouse in the world sits in Co. Wexford, Ireland on the Hook Peninsula. For 800 years, the Hook has been guiding ships and sailors in and out of the harbors of Ireland. Three thousand miles west of Ireland, in America, in Florida, in Palm Beach County, and in West Palm Beach there exists another lighthouse; where for nearly 92 years the lost, unwanted, neglected, abused and underserved animals have found their way to our doors. These sailors have seen rough seas but they find us, because the League is like a lighthouse. Over 600 humans from all over the world; Canada, England, Boston, New York and the Midwest seek us out too. They come looking for retirement, opportunity, education, the chance to learn something new or to meet someone new, to give back and to serve. They too find our doors, because the League is like a lighthouse. On January 20, 2017, the League hosted its annual Volunteer Appreciation Ceremony, honoring those volunteers Sindy Conover - Volunteer of the Year who had accomplished 50 hours or more in The event was the largest to date, with a record number of department volunteers 20 in total being recognized for their dedication to the League. It is with great pleasure that the League hosts this event each year. We get to celebrate our program and all of the volunteers who make it so special. We honor their donation of time, which is so very precious. We are forever grateful," Tara concluded. Get involved today. Volunteer! 8 Kids Corner It is never too early to instill philanthropy in a child. Children should learn that philanthropy is not just for adults or for the wealthy, but that anyone making an attempt to better society is a philanthropist. We would like to show our appreciation to all of our young philanthropists! Here are just a few from December Nicholas won $100 in a math contest. He decided to spend 100% of it on food and treats for our shelter animals. Members of the Palm Beach Central High School s Animal Rescue Club welcomed World War II veteran Lewis Doelling to join them on a recent work day at the League. They mopped floors and socialized with the cats and dogs. They also donated food and 25 hand-made fleece blankets. Stella and Owen walked through their neighborhood collecting money to purchase supplies for Peggy Adams shelter cats and dogs. Thank you to ALL of our amazing young philanthropists for your generosity and compassion to Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League! 9 Ask the Vet Dr. Beth Keser Yuck Screwworm is fly larvae (maggots) that feed on living flesh. These parasites can infect any warm-blooded animal, including humans. Screwworm is a foreign animal disease and must be reported to the USDA or animal health officials within hours of diagnosis. Screwworms have not been seen in the US since the 1800 s. Found primarily in tropical areas of South America and some Caribbean Islands, alarmingly, the new-world screwworm recently has been detected in wild deer and pets in the Florida Keys and Miami. The adult screwworm fly is slightly larger than the common house fly. It has orange eyes, a metallic blue-green body and three stripes down its back. Typical maggots feed on dead flesh screwworms feed on living tissue. One female can deposit up to 400 eggs at a time and up to 2,800 eggs during a 30 day lifespan. The eggs hatch into larvae that burrow into the flesh for 5-7 days. Eventually the larvae drop Screwworms are back! to the ground, go into the soil and pupate. 3-5 days later, the adult screwworm fly emerges and mates. It s amazing that the adult screwworm fly can travel up to 125 miles before laying eggs in a wound. They can also be transported by people and animals traveling from infested areas. Wounds that may become infected are: Tick bite... Castration Branding Shearing Navels of new borne animals and Mucous membranes of body orifices. Clinical signs: Infested animals may present with enlarging, draining, foul smelling wounds and weight loss. The infected area becomes uncomfortable and, if left untreated, animals may die from secondary toxicity or infections within 14 days. If your pet develops any unusual looking wounds or you find maggots on live stock, especially those imported from countries where screwworm flies are found, immediately report to your local veterinarian! Get to Know Us! Dr. Livadas Happy to be on the Peggy Team. Dr. Gloria Marin Livadas is a surgical veterinarian at Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League whose area of expertise is, primarily, in shelter medicine. Dr. Livadas was previously employed by Palm Beach County Animal Care & Control for 20 years (the last 10 years as Lead Veterinarian). During that time, her training was focused on shelter medicine, including Veterinary Forensics and Community Cat Management. Dr. Livadas was a key organizer of the first, and subsequent, Palm Beach County "Op Around the Clock" events, a 24 Hour Spay/Neuter Marathon. She had been a volunteer participant in Operation Catnip, and most recently she attended the Medical Team Training Program at Humane Alliance in Asheville, NC. In 2011, Dr. Livadas was honored to receive the Palm Beach County Golden Palm Award for her work in Veterinary Forensics. When talking about her other loves, she says, Since 1994, it has been my privilege to volunteer as a foster parent to dozens of dogs and cats. I am married to a wonderful man, Peter, and I have the good fortune to live close to my mother and sister. I love God, nature, animals, exercise, and cooking. PeggyAdams.org 9

10 Thank you to current members of the Leadership Circle... The Leadership Circle is made up of friends who have made generous five-year pledges to Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League (ranging from $1,000/year to as high as $100,000/year!). This is an incredible lifesaving opportunity starting at as little as $2.74/day or $83/month. We launched the Leadership Circle both to help meet the needs of animals rescued today and to build a foundation of secure support for animals coming our way in future years, explains Rich Anderson, Executive Director/CEO of the League. The multiyear pledges from Leadership Circle members give us the kind of predictable revenue that allows us to create new initiatives, confident that we can fund them. Our new Kitten Nursery is a perfect example of how we could take a major step because we know the charitable support was going to be there to help underwrite this latest initiative. 11 Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League's 45 th Annual Christmas Ball Helps Raise Funds for Homeless Animals sell-out crowd of Peggy Adams Animal Rescue A League supporters attended the League's 45 th Annual Christmas Ball on December 8 at the Sailfish Club in Palm Beach. This elegant holiday event supports the mission of helping homeless, neglected or injured dogs and cats. Pauline Pitt, a devoted League supporter and board member served as Chairwoman again this year of this very successful event. This enchanted evening, filled with holiday lights, garlands, festive Christmas trees and decorations around the club, began with a receiving line of loveable pets greeting guests with tails a-wagging as they arrived on the red carpet. Later in the evening, the dogs and cats paraded through the party for the guests to get a second look, and a few of the precious pets found their new loving forever homes. This is our single largest fundraising event and it is always a Pauline Pitt (Event Chair) and Jerry Seay full house. The evening was festive and fun. We are forever grateful for the support of so many who help the animals at Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League, reported Rich Anderson, Executive Director/CEO of Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League. Guests also enjoyed an annual tradition of shopping at the Shaggy Shoppe boutique to find holiday gifts for their pets and pet-loving friends while at the Ball. Some of the many sponsors included: A. He looked so sad yet still so full of love and life. I noticed a few bald spots on his head and body just by looking at his picture, but just knew that he was the one and wanted to meet him just to make sure he felt the same way. When we met Winston, it was apparent that he had a skin condition, demodex to be specific. The amazing team at Peggy Adams had rescued him and were nursing him back to health. We have had Winston for a few months now and we couldn't imagine our lives without him. He is such a good puppy, extremely loving, sweet, so funny and extremely smart. He just keeps getting healthier and smarter every day. He now has five best doggy friends that he sees, plays with and can't live without. His hobbies include going to the dog beach and dog park and making all the other dogs run and chase him. We are so thankful for Peggy Adams and we are so lucky to have rescued him. The Henson Family Dewey the cat was very proactive in finding his forever home. He is a free-roaming cat in our cat adoptions room and today this fellow sneaked out the door and into the main lobby. The lobby was full of clients, but he went directly into the lap of Melanie. Melanie had recently lost her own cat and wasn't at Peggy Adams to look for a new family member but when love comes your way, you can't just ignore it. Melanie adopted Dewey on the spot! This is a true testament that when love is real, it finds a way. Congratulations to Dewey and Melanie on their new family! To submit a Happy Tail, visit: PeggyAdams.org/Happy-Tail

Please contact us if you have a question or concern at Thank You for helping Make a Difference in 2016! Have you ever wanted to add a pet to your family, but you just couldn t? If you are someone who wants to watch over the canine and feline residents in our dog and cat adoption centers, in a way that hovers above the rest, then please become one of our Guardian Angels. A Guardian Angel funds the care of our resident cats or dogs in a specific condo or kennel. Thus, during your year as a Guardian Angel, you ll be helping a number of pets as they await their permanent home. Your status will be recognized with a card on your sponsored condo or kennel naming you, your family, or your business as that pet s Guardian Angel. You ll also receive a certificate and a special angel pin. Anyone who visits the shelter will be reminded of your generosity. The average cost of care for a dog or cat in our program is $19 a day and the average length of stay with us is 30 days. 18 Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League Sponsorships: $150 Small Cat Condo $250 Large Cat Condo or Dog Kennel $3,000 Archangel, provides the full care for 10 animals for a year Guardian Angels 1/1/16 12/31/16 Linda and Bill Caval Nance and George Crockett The Evasius Family Archangel Susan Eyth Patricia and Marshall Hilsberg Archangel Cherie and Vince Jackson Stephen S.
