Ask the Vet Dr. Beth Keser, Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League Lead Veterinarian* FIV & FELV Viruses that can be managed / Cats with them can be adopted FIV Feline Immunodeficiency Virus The feline immunodeficiency virus is a slow virus that affects a cat s immune system over a period of years. FIV is a cat-only disease and cannot be spread to humans or non-felines. These cats often live long, healthy and relatively normal lives with no symptoms at all. FIV is not easily passed between cats. It s not spread casually, like in litter boxes, water bowls, or when snuggling, or playing. The virus is spread through blood transfusions, badly infected gums or serious penetrating bite wounds. Keep in mind bite wounds are extremely rare except for free-roaming, unneutered males. A SNAP test can indicate active infection, but it is best to do a western blot to confirm the test at six months of age. If the pet has been bitten, the SNAP test should be performed approximately 2 to 4 months after the fight to see if the disease has been transmitted. FIV cats should be kept as healthy as possible. Keep them indoors and reduce stress, feed a high quality diet and, most importantly, treat any infections as soon as possible. The life expectancy for an FIV cat can be about 5 to 10 years. cats inhibits the spread of the virus by eliminating the primary means of transmission like fighting and inbreeding. Infected cats are often asymptomatic and can remain healthy with no signs of illness for many years. Prompt and accurate diagnosis is essential to allow early therapeutic intervention and have a successful treatment outcome. Many cats infected with FELV or FIV respond well to appropriate medications and treatment strategies. We advise pet owners feed an affected cat a nutritionally based diet and confine the cat indoors to prevent spread of disease to other cats. *Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League has five full-time licensed veterinarians on staff to care for our shelter animals, to operate our vaccine clinic, and to conduct our spay/neuter surgery services. FELV Feline Leukemia Virus FELV is known as a cat-friendly disease. Saliva is the most common way cats spread this disease by sharing food bowls and grooming each other. Mothers can spread the disease to their kittens in utero, by nursing, and grooming. The SNAP test will detect a virus circulating in the blood, but it can take up to eight weeks to show positive post exposure. Additionally, if the SNAP test is positive for FELV, you must confirm the test with an IFA test. The life expectancy for a FELV positive cat is about 3 to 5 years. Research from major universities in shelter medicine provides us with an incident rate of only 1 to 2% of animals that are positive with either FELV or FIV. The prevalence is actually low. 5 A Taxing Question: Can You Plan An IRA Rollover Gift In 2015? The Tax Increase Prevention Act of 2014 was passed in December, 2014 and extended for 2014 only the tax code provision which allows donors to make charitable gifts from their IRA accounts without incurring income tax on the withdrawal. The provision originally was enacted in 2006 and has been re-authorized several times. This summer, a new extension passed the Senate Finance Committee, but, at the time this issue of The Shaggy Sheet went to press, had not yet been approved by Congress for There is no way of knowing at this time whether legislation to extend this provision of the code will be enacted in time for If after talking with your professional advisors you decide to make a charitable gift from your IRA in 2015, you might wish to review the requirements of last year s provision. That way, if you comply with them and the provision does pass later this year, you will be able to make your gift without incurring income tax on the withdrawal. The key requirements of the recently expired provision were that: (i) the IRA account holder must be at least age 70½ at the time the distribution is made to the charity; (ii) the distribution must be made directly from the IRA custodian to the charity; (iii) the gift cannot exceed $100,000 per donor per year; and (iv) no goods or services can be received by the donor in exchange for the IRA gift If the law is not extended for 2015 the IRA distribution would not qualify for exclusion from your gross income, but your gift would still qualify for an income tax charitable deduction as do all gifts to Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League. If you d like to discuss how your gift can help the animals at Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League, please contact Kim Hanson at % of your purchase can help the animals! PeggyAdams.org 5

Jan Coulombe Vaccaro of Atlanta, Georgia, is a Forever Friend of Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League. Born and raised in West Palm Beach, she now lives in the Peach State, but continues to hold the League close to her heart. She writes, I have adopted several animals from Peggy Adams. Because of the League s steadfast presence and continued dedication to the animals in Palm Beach County, I wanted to share my appreciation by including Peggy Adams in my will. I want the money to go primarily to spay and neuter services because I feel that it is the only way to diminish the number of animals that are in shelters. I love animals and am an avid spay and neuter advocate and an adoption advocate. Everyone has their charities and Peggy Adams is mine. I would like as many dogs and cats as possible to have a home, and if we re going to achieve that, it is essential to prevent over-population through low cost spay and neuter programs. It breaks my heart when I see any animal in a shelter, even one as humane and life-preserving as Peggy Adams. Your FOREVER FRIENDS Legacy of Love for the Animals park here in Atlanta called Lenox Park thus the name Annie Lenox. Libby, I adopted from you when she was 18 months old and she is now 11. She is my soul mate dog. She has been with me through the roughest 11 years of my life. I don t know what I would have done without her. We thank Jan and all our Forever Friends for making provisions today that will continue our life-saving work well into the future. Jan is not alone. On September 21, members of our Forever Friends Society enjoyed a special reception honoring their compassion and foresight at the home of League President Joanie Van der Grift. Legacy gifts have been instrumental in helping the League expand the scope of its services over the 90 years it s been in operation, reflects Executive Director/CEO Rich Anderson. At the reception, the Forever Friends learned about a new program just launched September 1st called Peace of Mind. If a planned gift is at the $25,000 or more threshold, contributors may enroll pets with Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League and be assured that in the future their animals will be placed in a home with annual medical follow up and ongoing support to ensure that it is well cared for to the end of its days. 8 In my house it is, Oh dear Lord, the tree! You will also hear a round of get out of those presents and get off the counter. If you live with pet dogs in your home you know the holidays can sometimes be a challenge with all the great smelling food, boxes with all the shiny ribbons, and guests who don t always close the doors behind them. Dogs can be very sensitive to changes in their environment and routines. When the holidays bring lots of guests and activities, you need to try to preserve a few of their your pets routines. If there s considerably more hubbub than usual, plan some quiet times for them as well. Here are some key tips to keep your pets safe during the holiday season. For a more extensive list, visit: Christmas Trees Tinsel, popcorn strands, and other garland-like decorations can cause serious internal injuries if ingested. Ribbons, string, and other wrapping accessories can lead to choking or strangulation for a curious pet. Water at the base of natural trees can contain antifreeze and other preservatives that are deadly to your dog. All Christmas trees should be firmly anchored to the wall or ceiling to prevent toppling by an inquisitive pet. If you can t avoid all these things, try encircling your Christmas tree and gift display with an exercise pen to keep your pets away, but still allowing you to enjoy your holiday cheer. Electrical Cords Make sure these cords are well-secured so your pet doesn t make a chew toy out of them. Scented candles Candles can be attractive because of their smell, 8 Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League Is it O Christmas Tree or OH! Christmas Tree! Tips from the Trainer taste and texture. Make sure they are perched on high shelves out of your pets reach! Who s at the Door? Nowhere does the average family dog get into so much trouble as at the front door! Here are some ideas for making the doorway a safer place: Train polite greeting behaviors give yourself and your pet a week to come up to speed! A safe place If you haven t had time to train for all the comings and goings at the door, it s always good practice to have your dog crated or securely fastened on a tether or on a leash while guests are arriving or departing. Avoid visiting pets Unless your dog is already great friends with your visitors pets, it s a good idea to suggest your guests leave their pets at home. Multiple animals in the home present challenges. Keep snacking to a minimum Lots of fatty tidbits handed out by visitors can also lead to a dangerous bout of pancreatitis or intestinal upset. Have a portioned supply of your dog s special treats on hand that guests can use instead. Dogs and kids don t always mix! Gatherings can be very over-stimulating for dogs and kids alike, so never leave the dog alone with any little people, even his own kids. Interactions between the dog and kids should be strictly supervised by an adult who s dog-savvy enough to know when your dog needs a break. Teach Pets Leave it Drop it Trained positively, your dog will gladly disengage from just about anything you ve assigned a leave it to. Drop it can be trained through a series of fun trading games that will teach your dog to happily spit things out in anticipation of something better! Above all, enjoy the holidays!

Christmas Delivery Would you like to help us make lasting memories for families this holiday season? From December 13th until December 20th, adopters will be able to select a cat or dog to be delivered to their home on Christmas morning. Last year, volunteers and staff delivered 12 kittens and 2 puppies to their new loving homes on Christmas morning. Help us get these pets home for the holidays by volunteering to be one of our special delivery elves this Christmas! Sign up today by contacting volunteering@peggyadams.org or call going to the dogs! In celebration of National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month this past October, the great folks at CityPlace in Downtown West Palm Beach hosted Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League and the Schumacher PetMobile. On Saturday, October 17th in Center Court, Jennifer Ross from SUNNY and the Fun & Games Department from the radio station were on site playing games with great prizes. The SOCIAL SELFIE Kiosk was also on-hand allowing folks to take selfies and post them to social media. We are grateful to all of the volunteers and pet parents who came out to support us. We raised over $700 and more importantly six dogs and eight kittens found forever homes. THANK YOU to ALL! PeggyAdams.org 9

Happy Tails Saving Palm Beach County s Most At-Risk Animals As part of our efforts in support of Countdown 2 Zero (the initiative launched in 2014 to save the lives of every adoptable animal in Palm Beach County by the year 2024, Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League regularly transfers animals at high risk of euthanasia to our shelter from Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control (nearly 400 so far this year). Often, these are animals with medical problems that require the kind of special care the county-run shelter can t afford to provide. Today (and in future issues of The Shaggy Sheet), we want you to meet some of these wonderful, loving animals that you have helped save through your kind support of Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League. Day 1 at our clinic for Kingsley 10 Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League Meet Kingsley On August 14th, Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control responded to an urgent call about a dog crying out in pain from a fenced yard. The officers found the house abandoned. Nobody knows how long this dog had been left to suffer. He was tied tightly around his lower leg and tethered to a tree branch feet above his head. Blood flow to his leg and paw had been cut off; his foot was horribly discolored and swollen. The officer cut him free and rushed him to the county shelter. Once their clinic team saw the dog, they realized he needed more care and attention than they could provide. They knew to call Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League. We named him Kingsley. And we started this really sweet dog on his road to recovery. Besides mange, other skin issues, being malnourished, and unneutered, Kingsley had a seriously injured leg and paw. Examined by an outside veterinary specialist, Kingsley underwent specialty laser treatment to help restore proper circulation to his damaged paw. Thanks to the continued generous support of friends like you, Kingsley s life was saved. After several weeks of treatment and care, Kingsley Kingsley on his path to recovery was adopted into a new loving home in Lantana. The type of home he s likely never had. The type of home every dog deserves. Meet Sasha Sasha, an Old English Bulldog, came to the League from the countyrun shelter in May. Ten years old, Sasha had a long list of medical conditions, a severe under bite, and other dental problems. She had a benign tumor in her mouth. She also had arthritis. Despite her ailments, we saw that Sasha was a happy girl with a lot of life left in her. She was a good candidate for the Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League Fospice Program. Launched in 2014, this program supports permanent Foster Care for older animals, long-term shelter animals, and animals with medical or behavioral conditions. The League takes care of (continued on page 11)

(Happy Tails continued from page 10) the animals medical needs while Fospice volunteers provide them with loving homes for the remainder of their lives. On June 20th, Sasha and her Fospice family found one another. She is one of approximately 30 animals currently in Fospice, and one of the thousands of precious lives we are honored to rescue each and every year thanks to your support. Animals we transfer from the county shelter almost always have significant health issues (broken bones, wounds from neglect or abuse, heartworms, mange and other skin ailments). The cost to provide the necessary medical care and shelter for each of these animals is typically more than $1,000. That is more than double the average cost of other animals in our care. If you d like to help save more animals like Kingsley and Sasha, please make a gift today at PeggyAdams.org/donate or call Kim Hanson at PEGGY S PANTRY LAUNCHES Pet Supplies for People in Need Earlier this year Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League opened our newest addition. Peggy s Pantry provides pet food and supplies to needy individuals and families. At the League we do not believe that a family pet should have to be surrendered because of a financial challenge. Once a month our clients are able to pick up dog and cat food as well as treats, bedding, crates and any other supplies, all of which are donated. Since we opened the pantry doors in spring 2015, we have given out on average, over 12,000 pounds of food, cat litter and treats per month. If you can help, we d be so grateful. This translates into amazing numbers: we have fed 6,335 pets. We have distributed 61,887 pounds of food. We have provided 7,000 pounds of kitty litter. This service, which we provide free to the public, relies on donations of cat and dog food, toys, flea and tick shampoo, new or used crates, or treats. Does your child need community service hours for school or youth group? Peggy s Pantry can provide hours in exchange for food YouTube.com/PeggyAdamsRescue Peggy s Pantry assists struggling families located in Palm Beach County to feed their pets. We also offer referrals for low cost vet care and spay/neuter surgeries for struggling pet owners. Our goal is to keep families and their furry members together, to keep the pets out of the shelter. We recognize the important bond between people and animals. We believe this bond should not be broken or torn apart due to financial setbacks. If you have any questions or would like more information please call us at

Launched in 2014, Countdown 2 Zero is a public-private partnership between Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League, Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control, and the Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners. Its goal is to ensure that all adoptable animals in Palm Beach County are being saved by the year As in most communities around the country, here in Palm Beach County the government-run shelter (Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control) is overwhelmed on a daily basis by the number of pets being brought to them. Stray animals. Severely sick and injured animals. Victims of neglect and cruelty. Pets being surrendered by owners for a thousand different reasons. The tragic reality is that, as hard as they try, the county shelter does not have the space or resources to provide shelter and care for the thousands of animals that end up at their doors (more than 11,000 so far this year!). Here at Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League, each and every day we ask ourselves How can we prevent animals from ending up at the county shelter? How can we save the lives of animals that would make great pets but often need special medical care first? Our primary focus at the League as part of our leadership role with the Countdown 2 Zero initiative is to reduce intake and euthanasia at the county-run shelter. This year in particular, we have seen our work have a major lifesaving impact. Our Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return (TNVR) program this year alone has attracted major foundation funding, allowing us to alter more than 4,400 community cats through September nearly our total number for all of 2014 (4,885). These surgeries have prevented tens of thousands of kittens from being born and potentially ending up at the county shelter where they have a less than 35% chance of surviving. Does this sound like hyperbole? It is not One just one female cat and her first litter can produce as many as 370,000 kittens in seven years! Intake of cats at the county shelter in the 2 1 /2 years since we began has gone down more than 17%. Lastly, thanks to an ernest partnership with Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control, the League has been able to transfer and save 398 highly at-risk animals 293 dogs and 105 cats from the county shelter so far in 2015 (by far more than any other local rescue organization). The impact of these efforts is significant and immediate. Compared to last year, the county shelter has received 1,300 fewer animals and has euthanized 1,300 fewer animals. Thanks to your support of Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League and Countdown 2 Zero, our community is making progress and saving thousands of lives that, otherwise, would be at great risk. Together with you and the efforts of the entire animal welfare community we will no doubt achieve the Countdown 2 Zero goal of saving every adoptable animal in Palm Beach County by the year 2024! Learn more about the Countdown 2 Zero initiative at Countdown2Zero.org. To support the care and medical needs of animals transferred from the county shelter to Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League, or other Countdown 2 Zero programs, make a gift at PeggyAdams.org/donate or call Kim Hanson at (561) Our Foster Program s capacity to care for animals more than doubled in This means we ve been able to save nearly 1,000 more animals this year compared to last year. If not for our dedicated Foster volunteers, many of these animals would have ended up at the county shelter where they would have been at great risk of being euthanized. 12 Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League

Project CatSnip News One of the most significant animal welfare challenges we face in Palm Beach County is our large population of freeroaming, community cats. We estimate that there are 230,000 community cats living amongst us in our county alone. Left unchecked, these cats can produce as many as three litters of kittens each year with an average of four kittens per litter. Sadly, thousands of these cats end up at shelters where they are at great risk. This is why Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League launched its Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return Program (TNVR) in TNVR has proven to be the most effective and humane approach to stopping the cycle of reproduction. Not only does TNVR help control and reduce the population of cats, it reduces the risk of disease in our community (including rabies), reduces nuisance behaviors of cats (fighting, spraying, etc.), and helps protect wildlife (birds, in particular). has funded 4,012 cat surgeries. The current grant continues through May 31, in support of Countdown to Zero, provided grant funding in 2015 to spay/neuter 1,221 cats in Greenacres (zip code 33415), Royal Palm Beach (zip code 33411), and Loxahatchee (zip code 33470). We were able to successfully complete this work in just eight months. The Pet Partnership Project Grant supported our work in a 1.5 square mile, microtargeted area within zip code This grant enabled the League to spay/neuter 295 cats. Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control is currently funding a targeted project for nine zip codes in West Palm Beach, Wellington, Boynton Beach, Lake Worth and Greenacres, including 33401, 33404, 33405, 33407, 33414, 33435, 33460, and Since starting our TNVR program in 2010, the League s team of professional veterinarians has provided TNVR services to 18,426 cats. And since that time, the number of cats arriving at either the government-run Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control shelter or Peggy Adams has decreased by 50%. Thanks to the support of friends like you and major grant funding from foundations and other entities, we ve been able to expand our TNVR program and make great progress toward reaching our goal of making Palm Beach County a no-kill community by Project CatSnip Cat Spay/Neuter Grants Making a Difference in Our Community started funding spay/neuter surgeries in January 2012 in Lake Worth and Greenacres. Since June 1, 2015, PetSmart Charities has provided funding for free surgery in the Lake Worth, West Palm Beach and Lantana zip codes of 33406, 33409, and To date, PetSmart 14 Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League A Florida Animal Friend License Plate Grant funded 577 cat spay/neuter surgeries in zip code provides ongoing spay/neuter funding so far totaling 1,404 cat spay/neuters and has also generously sponsored our free cat Spay Day for National Community Cat Day. You Can Help Now is the time! Winter is the critical season to prevent the birth of thousands of kittens in our community. Now is the time to help Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return (TNVR) those cats that are in your neighborhood, around your office, or anywhere else you see free-roaming, community cats. Humane cat traps are available at Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League and surgery for community cats is available on a walk-in basis, Monday through Friday. Please visit peggyadams.org/pet-over-population today to learn how you can help!

Thank you to current members of the Leadership Circle... The Leadership Circle is made up of friends who have made generous five-year pledges to Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League (starting at $1,000/ year). This is an incredible live-saving opportunity for as little as $2.74/day or $83/month. We launched the Circle both to help met the needs of animals rescued today and to build a foundation of secure support for animals coming our way in future years, explains Rich Anderson, Executive Director/CEO of the League. The multi-year pledges from Leadership Circle members give us the kind of predictable revenue that allows us to create new initiatives, confident that we can fund them. Our Fospice and Adoption Ambassadors programs are just two examples of how we could take big new steps forward because we knew the charitable support was going to be there to underwrite them. Holland Richard Pinder In the name of love Volunteer Spotlight Lisa Tenbrook has been a volunteer at the League for two and half years and has logged over 1,500 hours of service. Before making her volunteerism official, Lisa would collect baby food for the foster kittens and have her son make the deliveries to the shelter. When her son went away to college, Lisa had to make her first donation delivery herself and she met Niki Gottesman, our foster coordinator. Niki took Lisa on a tour and convinced her to become a foster; she fostered and adopted all three of her fosters, two poodles and one kitty. Later in Lisa s career as a volunteer she realized the need for someone to manage the laundry regularly. Lisa now volunteers twice per week (and on holidays) making sure that the animals and staff have fresh and clean laundry at the ready. But there is more to Lisa then fostering and laundry; she is also a talented seamstress. 16 Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League The League is frequently the benefactor of blankets from the community; some pieces are too large for the washers. Lisa takes these pieces home, cuts them down, patches them together, works in her signature heart patch, and they become shelter-animal-ready. These lovely, cozy blankets are also used in our pet store locations. Lisa has also been known to help sew fabric pieces into trap covers for the TNVR program and has helped at many of our events. Lisa is kind, funny, inventive and a true asset to the program. She s always thinking up new ways to use what is donated, effectively and is very generous with her time and talent. Tara Pregnolato, Volunteer Manager. If you d like to learn more about the volunteer program at the League, visit to view program details and to sign up for an open house.

On June 23, 2015, Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League celebrated 90 years of building a more humane Palm Beach County. In 1925, The Animal Rescue League was formally incorporated by some incredibly compassionate women determined to save the lives of abandoned pets. The League has impacted the lives of more than 1 million animals in our community. Total services provided to cats and dogs Active volunteers donated hours. Volunteers are helping to enrich the lives of our shelter cats and dogs awaiting their new forever homes, assisting with special events, serving on our Board of Directors and, in general, ensuring that the League achieves our goals in serving animals and residents in our community. 20 Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League
