2 Statements & Search Criteria Mission To rescue orphaned or abandoned pets and other adoptable dogs from animal shelters in the Richmond area, provide spay/neuter and vaccinations, then find loving, forever homes for them. Background BARK (Bandit s Adoption and Rescue of K-9 s) was founded in 2001 by Bob and Denise Tillack who continue the legacy of a rescue effort they started when they saved Bandit in Bandit was a dog neglected by his owners. After watching Bandit deteriorate for several weeks, the founders approached Bandit's owners to purchase him. After several attempts, the owner released ownership of Bandit to BARK and they took him to his new home. The founders and Bandit were together for 14 years before his death in Bandit will always be remembered, serving as a constant reminder of all the other neglected, homeless and abused animals in the world.the Tillack s have created a safe-haven at their farm in Ashland for most of the rescued dogs. BARK also has a Foster Parent Program where lucky dogs and puppies can be placed in a foster home while waiting to be adopted. There are over 90 BARK volunteers (and counting) who perform the essential weekly tasks of kennel care, canine intake, medical review, application review & research, record management, adoption tracking, newsletter publication, special event planning, foster care, and response to training and/or behavioral inquiries. Each year BARK grows stronger in number of volunteers and number of rescued, orphaned animals saved. With your continued support the valuable work at BARK will save thousands of K-9 lives in the years to come. Impact In 2015, BARK placed 345 dogs. These lucky dogs were placed in forever homes. In 2016, 360 dogs were placed in permanent homes. BARK opened the Jessica Beath Spay and Neuter Clinic. This low cost clinic offers spay and neuter services to reduce animal overpopulation. The clinic also offers veterinary care and dental health care to rural areas at a lower cost. Our vets help educate new owners about proper and responsible animal care. Needs Our greatest need is financial support. We are an all volunteer organization (more than 100 volunteers; except for a very small 4-5 person veterinary team at the Spay/Neuter clinic). Our greatest needs are funding for dog food, preventative medicine (vaccines, flea and tick) and underwriting the cost of spay and neuter. We are always in need of volunteers. We have a great community of volunteers but with the changing of the season we tend to lose some of our college students when they go home. BARK has a wonderful partnership with the local colleges and universities. Great group of dedicated young people. To quote William James "Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does". Someone said to me that they can place 4 dogs in the time it takes us to place 1. I said they should place the 4, but someone has to save the one. I think that says it. We save the 1. Dave Harless Board Chair Statement BARK is a very unique and personal farm experience for both our volunteers and our dogs. People come to help for many reasons and they almost always find a reason to stay. We have such a warm and inviting group of volunteers which are often referred to as the BARK Family. Once you are in, you are in. Our group is inclusive and often that is the one thing that separates us from other organizations. We are not competitive with other rescue groups, we partner with any group that wants to share ideas and successes. We are just a community of good, solid people, doing what we feel is our responsibility to the homeless dogs in our area. We can't give them all a home but we can take very good care of them, helping to correct behaviors and temperament. We believe we can make a difference and we do. Everyday. Come see for yourself. 4 Programs Programs BARK Behind Bars Correctional Companion Program Description BARK is pleased to partner with Lawrenceville Correctional Center and Green Rock Correctional Center for the BARK Behind Bars Program. This program changes the lives of dogs and people. We see first hand the effect a dog can have on a human's physical, emotional and mental health. The program connects inmates with rescued dogs. The inmates work diligently to train their companions so they are more adoptable. The inmates find pride in the opportunity to make a difference, to give back, to gain self-worth. The graduation ceremony is powerful to everyone involved. Each inmate and dog being transformed. This creates a true connection and offers a positive change in their lives.
