Samson evidenced all the symptoms of an advanced case: hair loss all over the body accompanied by crusting, pain, enlarged lymph nodes, and deep skin infections. We were able to provide Samson with the medications, dietary supplements and foster care needed to aid in his Mission Accomplished: Samson Becomes Chewbacca! Samson, a sweet 4 month-old puppy, was transferred to the League from Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control with a profound case of Demodectic mange. Demodectic mange causes severe and recovery. Despite his condition, he came to us full of energy! He also loved to take naps inbetween playtimes. Samson was adopted by a family that adores him! They renamed him Chewbacca, which certainly seems appropriate with that gorgeous coat he turned out to have! Chewie has attended dog training classes, received the AKC Star Puppy Award as well as the AKC Canine Partners certificate and AKC Good Citizenship Award. AKC Canine Partners allows mixed breed dogs and non-eligible AKC registered dogs to participate and earn titles in dog sports such as Agility, Obedience, Rally, Tracking and Coursing Ability. Keeping Pets and People Together In June, Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League formed an alliance with Pet Paradise Resort. For every 20lbs. of food donated to Peggy s Pantry, Pet Paradise Resort is offering 1 free night of boarding for your cat or dog at their West Palm Beach location. Pet Paradise has 26 locations nationwide and just opened in West Palm Beach at 7100 North Military Trail. 4 Project CatSnip News Project CatSnip was developed to address the most significant animal welfare challenge we face in Palm Beach County humanely and effectively managing our large population of freeroaming, community cats. We estimate there are 230,000 community cats living amongst us in our county alone. Whether you love or loathe community cats, Trap- Neuter-Vaccinate-Return (TNVR) is the answer to effectively reduce the number of these cats. TNVR reduces most cat-related nuisances and is a benefit to public health and safety. By helping community cats in need, you are part of the solution to the overpopulation crisis, decreasing the burden on overcrowded shelters and rescue groups. Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League launched its Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return program (TNVR) in Since that time, the League has spayed/ neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and left ear-tipped 23,346 community cats. Of the cats receiving TNVR services, 12,543 were female cats. It is estimated that one female cat can produce 100 kittens in her lifetime. Had these female cats not been spayed, they could have produced as many as 1,254,300 kittens (that is just first generation). If 25% of the kittens survived to adulthood and half were female, the second generation total could have been as many as 15,678,750 kittens. Since 2007, the number of cats arriving at either the government-run Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control or Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League has decreased by 114%. Thanks to the support of friends like you and major grant funding from foundations and other entities, we ve been able to expand our TNVR program and make great progress towards reaching our goal of making Palm Beach County a no-kill community by Project CatSnip Cat Spay/Neuter Grants Making a Difference in Our Community PetSmart Charities started funding spay/neuter in January 2012 in Lake Worth and Greenacres. Since June 1, 2015, PetSmart Charities has provided funding for free cat surgeries in the Lake Worth, West Palm Beach and Lantana zip codes of 33406, 33409, and To date, PetSmart has funded more than 4,500 surgeries. The current grant continues through May 31, Through a generous grant from the, we have funding to offer free cat spay/neuter in two of our highest intake zip codes, and In fact, was the highest intake zip code for cats for several years but dropped to fourth place in 2015 because of the free surgeries being offered in the community since February (The first 8 months of the free cat surgeries in 2015 were funded by Best Friends Animal Society.) This grant continues until 1,200 cats have been spayed/neutered or November 30, 2016, whichever comes first. The Folke H. Peterson Foundation provided a generous grant to help fund free surgeries for lowincome residents and large cat colonies in high intake areas where grants for free surgery are otherwise not available. This grant began on December 31, 2015 and will continue until November 30, 2016 or until funds are used. Darbster Foundation provides ongoing spay/neuter funding for cats in Palm Beach County. In 2015 alone, they funded 917 surgeries. You Can Help Now is the time! 5 Get to Know Us! Paul Bates, Community Outreach TNVR Coordinator Having spent many years doing community outreach with animals in New York, I was passionate about promoting the human animal bond. I adopted my cat Scooch Man from Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League 12 years ago. I realized that day that this is the place I would love to work. In January 2010, I decided to volunteer for the League. I could not have loved it more so when a full time position opened up in Client Services I was ever so excited to join the team as a full time employee. That same year, the League opened their new Grace Pavilion building and with it came our high volume spay/neuter clinic. As I helped to develop the League s Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return (TNVR) program, my passion grew as fast as the program did. Who would imagine that today we can proudly say we are doing nearly 600 TNVR surgeries per month. I look forward to the day when there are no more community cats to TNVR because they have all received services and we have achieved our Countdown 2 Zero goal! The entire staff at Total Truck Parts of West Palm Beach would like to extend a huge thank you to Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League and Project CatSnip. We started feeding a few cats near our loading docks and before long came another and another. The colony grew to about 18 or 20. We built a feeding station that was protected from the rain and some staff even came in on the weekends to make sure the cats were fed. When we started seeing kittens, we knew it was time to do something to stabilize the colony. We heard about the League offering free Trap-Neuter- Vaccinate-Return (TNVR) in many zip codes but unfortunately ours was not one of them. We filled out an on-line trapping assistance request on PeggyAdams.org and quickly received a call. Paul assured us that help was on the way. A few days later Paul came by with 4 humane traps and instructed us how to turn the traps on their side, open the two doors and place some food in the center. These would become the cats new kitchen table for the next 5 days. They call that trap conditioning. We did exactly as he instructed us to do and sure enough, the cats got accustomed to the little screened-in dining rooms and began eating in them every day. On the 6th day, Paul returned at 7am with 25 traps, tasty cat food and trap covers. Everything worked exactly as planned and within one hour, we had 18 cats now trapped and on their way to Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League for the TNVR service. Our little colony is stable now and the employees here at Total Truck Parts take great pride in knowing they did the right thing. PeggyAdams.org 5

Its goal is to ensure that all adoptable animals in Palm Beach County are being saved by the year Learn more at Countdown2Zero.org Saving Palm Beach County s Most At-Risk Animals As part of our Countdown 2 Zero efforts, Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League regularly transfers animals from Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control into our care. Thanks to the caring and generous support from friends like you, more than 250 dogs and cats have been saved through this program so far in Often, these are animals with medical problems that require the kind of special care the county-run shelter can t afford to provide. The cost to provide the necessary medical care and shelter for each of these animals is typically more than $1,000. That is more than double the average cost of other animals in our care. We are incredibly grateful to friends and supporters who make this important effort possible. If you d like to help save more animals like these, please make a gift today at PeggyAdams.org/donate or call Kim Hanson at Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return: A Partnership Saving Cats at Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control A little more than a year ago on June 23, 2015, the Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously to adopt Trap- Neuter-Vaccinate-Return (TNVR) as Palm Beach County s official approach to address the challenge of free-roaming, community cats. Chewie the dog on the cover and featured on page 3 was one of these lucky animals. As were Sammy, who had been hit by a car; Hannah, who needed emergency surgery to remove a bladder stone the size of a bar of soap; and Henry, who was nearly starved to death and had a severe case of heartworms along with other health problems. The animals that we receive from the county shelter almost always have significant health problems. Immediately, Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League and Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control (PBCACC) got to work on a program to save community cats that arrive at the county run shelter and are too wild (or feral) to be adopted into a home. Thanks to the support of our community, many of these cats are now being saved! The cats are transferred over to Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League to be spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped and with the help of our tireless volunteers, they are returned to where they live. This program alone has saved the lives of 1,206 cats since it was launched in 2015! 6 Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League

7 Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League is proud to host the 3 rd Annual Countdown 2 Zero Adoption Event, presented by The Lois Pope LIFE Foundation, Inc. Set for Saturday, September 10 th from 10am to 5pm inside the Palm Beach County Convention Center, this free event will feature several hundred of Palm Beach County s most adorable dogs, cats, kittens, puppies, guinea pigs and rabbits available for adoption. Organized by the League and Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control, the Countdown 2 Zero Adoption Event is a collaborative effort of more than two dozen local animal rescue organizations to save the lives of animals in Palm Beach County. In 2015, nearly 30 local animal rescue organizations participated and more are expected this year. Since its inception, close to 600 animals have found their forever homes at these adoption events. 8 Ask the Vet WHY IT S IMPORTANT TO VACCINATE YOUR PETS Dr. Beth Keser Vaccinations are an important part of your pets overall health routine and often one of the easiest ways to help them live a long, healthy life. To protect your pet from contagious diseases, it is imperative to keep the core vaccinations up to date. Many diseases are airborne and even your indoor pet can easily be exposed through an open window. If you frequent dog parks, boarding kennels or the groomer, your pet is likely to be exposed to contagious diseases. Parvovirus This is highly contagious, potentially fatal, and easily spread: symptoms are vomiting, lethargy, bloody diarrhea, fever, dehydration. Leptospirosis This is an infectious bacterial disease transmitted by contact with urine of an infected dog, rat or other wildlife. Symptoms include: high fever, depression, jaundice, and internal bleeding. Bordetella Also highly contagious and can be spread through the air, another cause of kennel cough aka the kennel cough shot. Vaccinations enable the body s immune system to fight disease causing organisms. Vaccinations contain antigens which look like the disease causing organism to the immune system but don t actually cause the disease. When the vaccine is introduced to the body, the immune system is mildly stimulated. So, if your pet is ever exposed to the real disease, the immune system will recognize and fight it off entirely or reduce the severity of the illness. Core vaccines for Dogs: DHPP, DHLPP, Bordetella, Rabies Distemper This is a serious, often fatal viral infection that causes a wide variety of symptoms in infected dogs like coughing, nasal discharge, vomiting, diarrhea and even seizures. Hepatitis This is a viral disease of the liver transmitted via urine, nasal, or ocular secretions and can cause severe and permanent damage. Parainfluenza One of the causes of Kennel Cough which is highly contagious and can be spread through the air causing coughing and sneezing. *Optional vaccinations include: Canine Influenza (a viral upper respiratory disease) and Lyme disease (a bacterial infection spread by ticks) Core vaccinations for cats: FVRCP, Rabies Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis FVR: Causes upper respiratory infections caused by Feline Herpes virus symptoms include sneezing, ocular and nasal discharge. Once infected cats usually carry the disease for life and may become sick when stressed. Calicivirus Is a highly contagious cause of Upper Respiratory Infection (URI). It can cause painful ulcers on the tongue and back of the oral cavity. Panleukopenia Known as Feline distemper is a common highly contagious viral infection of cats similar to Parvo virus in dogs. It can be serious and often fatal in young, unvaccinated cats. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, and a poor appetite. 9 Rabies: Information to Know Once symptoms develop, rabies is always fatal. The rabies virus attacks the brain and central nervous system, and is transmitted to humans primarily through the bite or scratch of an infected animal. It is required by law to vaccinate your dog or cats against rabies by four months of age. The World Health Organization reports that up to 59,000 people worldwide die from rabies every year, with 99% of them have been bitten by a rabid dog. The availability of vaccines for both humans and animals has led to a huge decline in rabies cases in the US, where there are only 2-3 deaths per year. Dogs, cats, rabbits, skunks, raccoons, and bats are able to transfer the virus to humans via bites and scratches. Although unvaccinated dogs are responsible for most cases of rabies, bats are the cause for the most rabies deaths in the Americas. Rabies is a preventable disease. The most important thing you can do is vaccinate your pets Florida law states all dogs and cats must be vaccinated for rabies by the time they are 4 months of age. A booster is required one year after that first vaccination. Keep them from roaming outside. Report stray animals. Avoid contact with wild animals. Prevent bats from entering living spaces or structures near your home. Get to Know Us! Dr. McCrary is proud to be a part of the Peggy team. Dr. Kia N. In her career, Dr. McCrary has performed over 45,000 surgeries that have had an incredible impact in the battle against stray overpopulation. Dr. McCrary graduated from Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine, Nursing & Allied Health. She received in-depth training in new and improved spay and neuter surgical techniques from experienced Veterinarians with Humane Alliance, out of North Carolina. She has further used those skills to help the underrepresented and underserved animals. Dr. McCrary is married and has a twelve year old son and an eleven year old daughter. 10 New Nursery Breathes Life into Orphaned Kittens The League is excited to announce the opening of its brand new Kitten Nursery. The nursery, located in the Domes, is a revolutionary approach to saving the lives of more neonatal kittens. The concept for the nursery came during this year s incredibly busy kitten season. When kittens are brought into the shelter, often only hours old, the League previously had to rely on the help from foster families to care for the kittens that require around-the-clock care and feeding. Even with 200 foster families currently assisting the League, we needed more help to reach a higher survival rate. With the opening of the Kitten Nursery, the League now has a designated room just for the most at-risk orphans. The nursery, which can hold up to twenty litters at any given time, is staffed 24-hours a day by employees of the League as well as dedicated volunteers all specially trained in bottle-feeding and the unique care that is involved in raising neonates. What does all this mean? With the nursery, we will be able to help more litters of neonates as we partner with Animal Care and Control through WANTED!!! We need you! Help us SAVE LIVES! Ultimately, this will result in saving more lives! In an effort to keep the nursery disease free and, therefore, protecting these delicate lives whose immune systems have not yet developed, the nursery is closed to the public as well as staff and volunteers not authorized to enter. When the kittens are old enough to eat on their own (usually around 4 weeks old), they will be placed in loving foster homes where they will continue to grow and get socialization before returning to the League for adoption. 11 Happy Tails Saving Palm Beach County s Most At-Risk Animals Meet Ziva Hello from the Zwemke family, Jeff, Pat and Ziva. I can't begin to tell you how happy we are to have Ziva as part of our family. She became an instant member when she walked thru the door. She won the heart of Jeff very easily. What's not to love? I have seen no behavioral problems at all. She walks perfectly on a leash and is house broken. She has a whole box of toys and she loves to play. We had a great game of chase in the back yard Friday afternoon. Needless to say, I am over the moon for Ziva! When I was at your facility waiting to meet the Adoption Counselor Dan, I looked around the room at all the owners with their new fur babies and saw how happy both were and I truly realized what a wonderful thing adoption is. I can't thank you enough for what you do. I encourage everyone to think of adoption first. There are so many great dogs, just like Ziva, and cats looking for a good home that will bring so much joy and love to you." He moved into our home with 2 cat brothers (Remy and Tybalt) and 2 dog sisters (Nala and Riley) and quickly made his place in the family. During the day, he loves to be carted around by the children while receiving lots of petting and tons of love. At night, he loves to snuggle up with all his furry friends. 15 Peace of Mind for Rock Star Prince and Fashionista CoCo! He s a rock star with a skinny, long face and goatee, which is why I named him Prince! exclaims Clare Lazarow about one of the two kittens she recently adopted while volunteering at the League. He and his sister, CoCo (after CoCo Chanel) amaze Clare and her husband, Larry, at how they do no damage at all, but the house really is a total cat tree for them! They really have fun. A devoted cat enthusiast, Clare volunteered this past winter season, coming up from her home in Highland Beach to help clean the cages for the kittens and cats in the Domes, in Post Op, and in Foster Alley. I fell in love with the people at Peggy Adams, too, she comments. They are knowledgeable and so dedicated to the animals and their welfare. She is particularly impressed with the shelter staff and their manager, Brittni Fleming. I m not anticipating going anywhere soon, she laughed, but I wanted to be sure that in case something were to happen to me and my husband, that Prince and CoCo would be cared for by the League. That s why we enrolled them in the Peace of Mind program. Peace of Mind for our Forever Friends: How the Program Works If you are a member of the League s Forever Friends legacy society, you are eligible to enroll your pets in the Peace of Mind program. The program provides for long-term, permanent care of your pets when you are no longer able to care for them. Unlike will provisions and letters of instruction, which can be delayed while an estate is administered, Peace of Mind takes effect the moment the need arises. To enroll in Peace of Mind, you need to have made a minimum commitment of $25,000 to Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League via a bequest, life insurance policy beneficiary designation, retirement account, or other planned gift vehicle, or via an outright gift. Prince takes care of CoCo, watches over her, even helps her when she has trouble with something, she explains. I saw them curled up, sleeping together in one of the display cases in the lobby one afternoon. I had been looking at Peggy Adams and other shelters for a few weeks for a kitten, after my wonderful cat of many years had passed away. These two just won my heart. Even my husband, who s not really a cat person, takes so much joy in their antics. We are so glad to know that there are people like those at Peggy Adams who we know will take great care of them if it s ever needed.

A Guardian Angel funds the care for the resident cats or dogs in a specific condo or kennel. Thus, during your year as a Guardian Angel, you ll be helping a number of pets as they await their permanent home. Your status will be recognized with a card on your sponsored condo or kennel naming you, your family, or your business as that pet s Guardian Angel. You ll also receive a certificate and a special angel pin. Anyone who visits the shelter will be reminded of your generosity. The average cost of care for a dog or cat in our program is $19 a day and the average length of stay with us is 30 days. In 2014, Peggy Adams' Executive Director/CEO, Rich Anderson, was elected to the Board of Directors of the Florida Association of Animal Welfare Organizations (FAAWO) which is an organization of dedicated animal advocates working together to positively impact animals throughout the state of Florida. Their goal is to offer assistance, exchange ideas and support colleagues in the compassionate work of saving lives. 20 Why Pet Insurance? Duke and Shelly, two adorable small Chihuahuas, love to run and play in their fenced back yard in the evenings. One night, they were joined unexpectedly by a Bufo marinus toad. Duke, being the curious pup he is, went over to the toad to investigate. The toad, feeling threatened, released bufo toxin from its back - causing Duke to retreat. Immediately after Duke began to foam at the mouth, his parents Karen and Dave knew something was wrong - just not exactly what. Dave rushed Duke to the sink to rinse his mouth, then drove immediately to the emergency vet. Upon arrival, Duke had an elevated heartrate and had to be kept at the vet for observation.
