FREE Take One Volume 6, Issue 6 June 2016 Pet Preparedness HURRICANE SEASON JUNE 1 NOVEMBER 30 Get Ready, Virginia From the Virginia Department of Emergency Management Your pet is an important member of your household and pets are affected by disasters, too! As you put together supplies for your family s emergency kit, don t forget to plan for your pet. In an emergency, you may need to stay in your home or perhaps you ll have to leave. If you evacuate, DO NOT leave your pets behind. Pets most likely cannot survive on their own. Plan now where your pet will stay if you have to evacuate: a friends or relative s home, a pet-friendly hotel or motel, or a kennel or veterinarian s office. Talk to your vet or local humane society about an emergency plan for your pet. Make a pet emergency supply kit. Include: At least three days food in airtight, waterproof container (include can opener, if necessary) At least three days water specifically for your pet Food and water bowls Extra collar with ID tag and leash Current photos of you and your pet together, in case you get separated Crate or other pet carrier that is large enough for your pet to stand, turn around and lie down, with blankets or towels for bedding Litter box and pet litter, if appropriate; also, newspapers, paper towels, plastic trash bags Continued on Page 4
Pets for Adoption Brave, 8 month old neutered male. Brave is an affectionate guy that LOVES attention. He is still young and likes to play, but he is average energy and can settle down nicely inside. He is crate trained and doing well with housebreaking. He is also doing great with leash manners and he loves going for walks. Good with kids and other pets. Claire, month old female. Claire was found as a stray. She is super sweet and affectionate, but also timid and easily startled. Claire loves attention and likes to be around her people as much as possible. She is energetic and enjoys a nice romp in the yard, but then is happy to snuggle on the couch. Claire is crate trained, doing great with housebreaking, and making some progress with walking on a leash. Claire is very submissive with other pets. She enjoys playing with other dogs once she gets to know them. Opie is a very loveable two year old Labrador mix. He is neutered, crate trained, up to date on shots and microchipped. Opie gets along with other dogs, cats and older children. He does fine being loose with my three dogs and cats when I'm gone. Opie is very active so he needs a large fenced yard to run and play and lots of toys. He has had a bit of a rough start and can be a little skittish so a home visit will be required. DAX, 9 month old neutered male. Hound mix, very friendly. UTD on vaccines, crate trained, housebroken. All around nice boy. Buster, 10 month old neutered male, Walker Hound mix. Friendly, playful, and affectionate. Still a puppy with lots of energy. 2
Pets for Adoption Harley, 2 year old neutered male, houndlab mix. Harley was living with an untreated skin condition for over a year. He is in treatment now and doing MUCH BETTER. We expect him to make a full recovery. He is a friendly, playful, affectionate guy. Harley is good with cats and other dogs. Brother and sister duo, Zea (left) and Lou (right), 1 year old. Can be adopted together or separate. Both are good around other cats, but have not been around dogs. Zea, the female is very sweet and likes to explore and play. Lou, the male, is a big, sweet boy who loves to play. Puppies: hound mix, two different litters Kittens: Assortment of colors Chippy 8 month old male, black and white tuxedo. Good kitty that likes to play. Owners had to give him up because of allergies. Chippy was the only animal in a house with adults only, so we don t know how he is with other animals or kids. 3
Continued from Page 1 Familiar items such as toys and treats One other thought in an emergency, including severe weather, don t leave your pets outside. Bring them in. For more information about Hurricanes and storm preparedness, please visit the Virginia Department of Emergency Management at The 2016 Hurricane Season is predicted to be busy. Pets are often abandoned during natural disasters because of lack of planning. TripsWithPets.com offers a pet evacuation plan checklist and resources on finding pet friendly hotels in case of evacuation. TripsWithPets.com also provides general pet traveling trips and pet friendly things to do when on vacation. You may visit their site at: 4

Animals are reliable, many full of love, true in their affections, predictable in their actions, grateful and loyal. Difficult standards for people to live up to. ~Alfred A. Montapert I had a linguistics professor who said that it's man's ability to use language that makes him the dominant species on the planet. That may be. But I think there's another thing that separates us from animals. We aren't afraid of vacuum cleaners. ~Jeff Stilson THANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOU Tracey Carr Kerry Christian Jessica Gordon Rebecca Heath Melodie Kelly Casey McCaskill Mark and Donna Pollock Amber Richards Ann Weber Bob Wiatt, Heritage Antiques Susan Whitcher, Sparkle and Shine Cleaning David Nesselroad in the name of his daughter, Teresa Williams, who requested part of her birthday present go to the memory of Bailey, a special needs dog Petco Foundation, Spring a Pet in-store fundraising campaign Gimme Shelter Amazon Smile Special thanks to Cooper Smith, son of Jody Smith and Lisa Richardson-Smith.
