Box Sacramento, CA Dear Dr. Smith, It s that time of year again the Sacramento Area Animal Coalition (SAAC) will organize SPAY DAY SACRAMENTO 2012 on Sunday, February 26! We hope you will join us again this year as we strive to provide 1,000 spay/neuter surgeries to dogs and cats belonging to low-income residents of Sacramento and Yolo Counties. Participating veterinary clinics like yours are key partners in this important community event. During SPAY DAY 2011, your staff and clinic performed «surgeries» surgeries, helping SAAC spay and neuter more than 700 animals across the Sacramento area. This year, we want to provide 1,000 surgeries on SPAY DAY To reach this ambitious goal, we hope you will consider increasing the number of surgeries you can accommodate 10 percent. However, any level of participation will be very much appreciated and will make a difference in the pet overpopulation problems in Sacramento and Yolo Counties. If your clinic is unable to perform spay/neuter surgeries on Sunday, February 26, here are some other ways you can support Spay Day 2012: Make a monetary donation to SAAC for Spay Day. Donors of $250 or more will be listed in Spay Day promotional materials. Donate online at or by sending a check to SAAC, PO Box Sacramento, CA Complete pre-spay Day surgeries during your normal clinic hours anytime between February 13 and February 25. Complete post-spay Day surgeries during your normal clinic hours anytime between February 13 and February 27 and March 2. 2 SPAY DAY Frequently Asked Questions Q: What is included for Spay Day 2012? A: Spay/Neuter surgery, flea control (limited supply only for clients in need) FVRCP, DHPP, rabies and microchip. You may have the opportunity to order supplies from MWI and receive a 10% discount if you specify that the supplies are for Spay Day. Q: What if a client says that the animal is current on vaccines but they didn t bring their proof? A: We recommend going ahead with vaccination. You will be given a set for every animal scheduled at your clinic. Q: If we cannot reach the client at the number provided, must we wait around for them to pick up their animal? A: No. You may post a warning that has a final pick-up time and if they do not pick-up their animal by the stated time, you may charge them overnight boarding to stay. Q: Can we give analgesics or antibiotics? A: This is at the discretion of the clinic veterinarian. You are welcome to practice your standard quality of care. Q: What if the animal packet information differs from the animal actually presented at the clinic? A: If it is a male versus female mistake it is at your discretion what your schedule will permit. If you choose to proceed with services, that is okay. If not, please refer the client to SAAC website, sacanimal.org to request a voucher. If it is a different animal altogether, we leave it to the clinic s discretion. You can change the paperwork to have the correct information reflected or you may have them contact SAAC to request a voucher. Q: Is it okay for someone other than the owner pick-up the animal? A: Yes, as long as they have the microchip registration form filled out completely. (You may want to hand out an animal pick-up card so when the animal is picked up by a different person you will know the appointment name and carrier you are looking for.) Q: What if the animal is sick/obese/too old/feral? A: 1. SICK: A sick animal does not qualify for Spay Day. You may recommend the client seek appropriate medical attention for their pet. You may also suggest that they contact SAAC to request a voucher once the animal is healthy enough for surgery. If you want to do surgery at a later date you may retain the animal packet in the event that you want to implant the microchip, apply flea control and vaccinate. 2. OBESE. Spay day services for obese animals are at the discretion of the clinic veterinarian. 3. OVER THE AGE LIMIT. If an animal is found to be older than the 5 year maximum for Spay Day, you may choose to proceed depending upon how close to the limit the animal appears to be. You may also choose to refer the client back to SAAC to request a voucher. 4. FERAL. Feral animals do not qualify for Spay Day services. There are many other programs available for feral cats. Please have them contact SAAC through our web site for guidance. Q: What if the animal is aggressive or too stressed out? A: You have a few choices: 1. Have the client come back during the week and try to handle the animal without the stress of Spay Day; 2. Refer the client back to the SAAC web site to request a voucher during normal clinic hours (you may retain their animal packet for this); or, 3. If the animal is too aggressive please have them contact their regular vet for tranquilizers prior to any voucher appointment. Q: What is the procedure for microchips since the chips are not preassigned? Each clinic is in charge of assigning the microchip to each animal. Record the animal number and owner last name on the Microchip Logsheet (should be in the box or envelope with the microchips). We have provided a prepaid registration form for each chip. Following Spay Day, please return unused microchips and unused registrations forms in your clinic box. Q: How are microchips registrations handled?

3 We anticipate using AVID microchips again this year. We will provide one prepaid registration form for each microchip. The client will complete the prepaid registration form; clinic staff or volunteer will review for legibility and completeness, enter the microchip number on the registration form, and retain the form to be given to the site supervisor along with the Microchip Logsheets. The site supervisor will ensure the Microchip Logsheets match the registration forms and will mail the registration forms to AVID. Please note that these are prepaid forms and should not be thrown away if spoiled. For a spoiled form, the client will need to provide all information on a separate sheet of paper to be stapled to the spoiled prepaid form. The site supervisor is respnsible to account for and mail all registrations. PLEASE DO NOT SEND THE MICROCHIP REGISTRATION HOME WITH THE CLIENT. If a client loses a form, that client will have to pay for the registration. Q: What if the microchip is faulty or does not implant properly? A: Each clinic is supplied with at least one extra microchip. If you run short, contact Jonel at 916/ or Kim at 530/ Q: What if we accidentally give a vaccine intra-fur? A: That is okay. You should have enough supplied by SAAC to give another one. Q: What are the client payment amounts? A: Cats are $15.00 and Dogs are $ Q: What do we do with the client payments? A: The clinic has the option to keep the client payments to help cover the cost of supplies. However, the clinic may also donate the client payments back to SAAC. Your donation back to SAAC will help fund our yearround voucher program. Q: What if the client has more than one animal and can not afford to pay the fee for each pet? A: We recommend that the client call a friend to borrow the money so they don t forfeit a valuable Spay Day appointment. However, if they cannot pay the appropriate payment amount they need to be referred back to the SAAC web site for a voucher request. Please remind the client that their animal will not receive a microchip or flea control if needed, if they change programs. Q: Does SAAC reimburse clinics for any surgeries? A: SAAC will reimburse the clinic $40 for each spay or neuter performed on dogs 50 pounds or more. An invoice for surgeries performed on dogs 50 pounds or more. must be provided to SAAC within 60 days after Spay Day. Please submit the invoice to SAAC at P.O. Box , Sacramento, CA or jonel@sacanimal.org. Q: What kind of refreshments will be provided on Spay Day? A: Vegetarian items for breakfast and lunch and beverages will be provided for the number of volunteers that staff your clinic on Spay Day. Please communicate to your Site Supervisor what time you prefer to have your lunch delivered. Q: What if a client shows up but is not listed on the roster? A: If the client brought their appointment card you may see where they are assigned. If they did not bring their reminder card, you may call Jonel at to have the main roster checked to see if they should be at a different location. Q: What if cats are not brought in carriers (one cat per carrier)? A: You may require that they go to a nearby store and purchase a carrier. Also, you may provide them with a cardboard carrier and charge them your normal clinic price. Everyone is instructed to bring only one animal per carrier and that all cats must be in carriers. Q: What if the cat is brought in a homemade carrier?

4 A: Each client is clearly instructed to bring all cats in appropriate carriers. Safety is the primary factor. If you feel the homemade carrier is safe and appropriate, you may, at your discretion, allow the animal to receive services. However it is not recommended. Q: Do we provide E-collars? A: No. We do recommend that they purchase one at their local pet store or veterinary clinic during regular business hours. Q: Who do we call if we still have questions on Spay Day? Jonel or Kim will be available to take your calls and help answer any questions you may have. Jonel can be reached at and Kim at Q: How are post-surgery inquiries and emergencies handled? You have the choice of handling these calls if you chose. You will need to notify SAAC of your desire to do so and provide the contact information so that it will be included on the client s discharge instructions. If you do not wish to handle these calls, the clients will have two options: they can contact one of the on call volunteer veterinarians retained by SAAC or contact an emergency veterinary hospital or clinic. The contact information for the on-call veterinarians and for area hospitals or clinics will be on the client discharge sheet. It will also be made clear that any post surgery visits and services will be the financial responsibility of the client. This is also specified in the owner release form.

Visit starting on Saturday, January 15 to apply for an appointment Spay Day Guidelines Spay/neuter surgeries will take place on or around Sunday, March 6, Surgeries will take place at participating veterinary clinics in Sacramento and Yolo Counties. Appointments are required. You can apply for an appointment by visiting and filling out an application. If you don t have Internet access, visit your local public library. Applicants must have an annual household income of $35,000 or less to qualify for Spay Day. Proof of income will be required. 7 December 5, 2010 First Last Company Address Sacramento, CA Dear First, On March 6, 2011 the Sacramento Area Animal Coalition (SAAC) will coordinate Spay Day Sacramento, the largest one-day spay/neuter event for dogs and cats in the United States! SAAC s Spay Day mission is to drastically reduce the number of homeless dogs and cats in the Sacramento region. Our goal in 2011 will be to provide surgeries to the pets of families in need throughout Sacramento and Yolo Counties. Thanks to your support of Spay Day 2010, SAAC was able to provide close to 1,000 spay and neuter surgeries, easing the extreme burden placed on area animal shelters and rescue groups. Many families can t afford spay/neuter surgeries for their pets. SAAC plays a key role in providing assistance to these families by teaming up with staff and volunteers at more than 15 local veterinary clinics and animal shelters to offset the cost to spay and neuter hundreds of pets in one day. Though hundreds of volunteers pitch in to help cover some of the expenses associated with Spay Day, we still need your help to raise the additional monies required to achieve our ambitious goal for the animals.
