26 26 1. Project Name: Enhancement of Sustainable Productivity of Fish in Lake Victoria through Control of Pollutants with Emphasis on Endocrine Disruptors and Microbial Pathogens 2. Proposed Domain Name : Mbuthia, Paul Gichohi gichohip.org/ 3. Project Overview The aim of this project is to enhance the productivity of fish in Lake Victoria through improved management of sources of endocrine disruptors and water-borne pathogens. This will be achieved through establishing the sources and effects of endocrine disruptors on sustainable production of fish in the Lake Victoria. In addition, the project will establish the extent of contamination of water and fish by bacterial pathogens in an attempt to improve their management. The study is being conducted in Mwanza, Jinja and Kisumu (and its environs) cities in Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya, respectively and Nile tilapia (Oreochrmis niloticus) comprises the target population for studies. Main activities for this study include, sociological surveys to establish the sources and impact of pollutants in particular the endocrine disruptors, microbiological studies to assess the extent of contamination of water and fish by bacterial pathogens, immunological studies with vitellogenin-elisa to establish exposure of fish to oestrogenic pollutants and pathological studies to assess the health effects caused by pollutants and pathogens in fish. The research findings will be disseminated to relevant stakeholders and will be used to design an intervention strategy that will aim at reducing the burden of endocrine disruptors and bacterial pathogens in the lake and hence improve the fish (food) productivity and safety. The project will be accomplished in three years and sociological study has been undertaken in the three countries. 4. Objectives The main objective of this project is to establish sources of endocrine disruptors and their exposure and effects on fish in the Lake Victoria and potential pathogens that limit productivity and render fish products unsafe for human consumption. 26

27 27 Specific objectives 1. To establish the sources of pollution in the Lake Victoria with emphasis on endocrine disruptors from human, animal, industrial and agricultural origins. 2. To determine the extent of contamination of water and fish by microbial pathogens of faecal origin. 3. To assess the oestrogenicity of pollutants in the lake using vitellogenin biomarker in blood and liver samples from adult males and juvenile female fish. 4. To determine the effect of pollutants and microbial pathogens in fish using morphological and pathological indicators. 5.
