OVERVIEW OF AQUATIC ANIMAL HEALTH (AAH) SITUATION IN THE COUNTRY (a) List of aquatic animal diseases of national concern - Epidermis disease out-break in finfish and shrimp. - EUS occurred in 1985 and now the condition is no more serious. - A few problems of Parasites, Bacteria and Fungal disease is due to poor water quality management. - The parasitics diseases are Lernaeasis, Tricodimeosis, Crustacean disease (Argulus, Ergasilus), Monogenosis(Dactylogyrus) - Bacterial disease (Vibrio spp.) was occurred in December 2007 at Grouper farm. - WSSV occurred since At present, no more serious regarding Virus, however Bacteria. - Parasite occurred in some farms because of weather and management.

3 (b) Current situation of emerging diseases threats (con t) -In 2013 Feb-May MOLFRD received the report of mortalities from private fresh water prawn hatcheries from Kyauktan, Twantay townships in Yangon Division. -Investigation Teams included technicians from DOF and Veterinary Department and University of veterinary science conducted and investigated on 13 June 2013 to the reported area. -Investigation teams revealed that six private freshwater prawn hatcheries in Twantay Township.

4 (b) Current situation of emerging diseases threats ( Con t ) The investigation uncovered that since Feb 2013, mortality rate is 95% in all hatcheries at stage 5-6. The clinical symptoms showed color changes began at stage 4-5 larvae (10 days old) followed by different size of growth in survivors. All six affected hatcheries showed some similarities of naturally found breeders and food but differ in water resourced used.

5 (b) Current situation of emerging diseases threats ( Con t ) Laboratory Small larvae samples taken from the hatcheries ponds in Kyauktan and the 1 st sample sent to Arizona University. Arizona University lab reported that there are 20 post larvae (PL) from one sample set. 6 Observation High Mortality rate occurred at freshwater prawn hatcheries in Kyauk Tan and Twantay townships in Yangon region are- 1-Poor water quality. 2-Temperature is round about Temp; 40 c in Yangon Division at that time. 3-Poor handling and transportation.

7 Current situation SEAFDEC/AQD gave the training on Freshwater fish Health management with emphasis on Fish borne zoonotic parasites with funding support from the Government of Japan (GOJ) At present Kyauktan and Twantay will be started the 2 nd water prawn hatchery farms on 1 st week of November. Belgium expert will be trained and checked the relevant farms.

8 Competent authority Ministry of livestock, Fisheries and Rural Development, Department of Fisheries is the sole competent Authority AAH and disease control in Myanmar.

9 Objectives To support increasing fish/shrimp production activities according to international standard To make more effected on aquatic animal health management by advance technologies To increase fish/shrimp production by conducting training for farmers, students and fishery communities To support aquatic animal health management activities by checking import and export aquatic animals

10 Laboratories Two labs under the DOF (Yangoon and Nyaung Done) for aquatic animal health related work.

14 Level-II Can diagnose histopathology and microbiology in Lab, however, need more advanced technologies and training.

15 Level-III PCR detect for four shrimp viral diseases such as, White Spot Syndrome Virus, Infectious Hypodermal And Haematopoietic Necrosis Virus, Taura Syndrome Virus, Yellow Head Virus.

16 Transboundary AAD -Visit alive aquatic animals premises before export for quarantine to prevent Trans boundary disease - Issue Health Certificate

17 Conclusion The Department of Fisheries is conducting currently to:... Produce fish on sustainable basis. Uplift the role of fisheries sector and fisheries communities. Produce sufficient amount of quality and safety food for local consumption, to explore foreign markets. Invite more investments both from local and regional bodies. Avoid over exploitation and destruction of fish stock. Develop aquaculture. Safeguard fishery resources and protect fish habitats. Develop the technology on value added fishery products.

18 Future Plans Our future plans are- - To support departmental planning by Aquatic Animal Health and Disease Control Activities. - Need training, advance technology, and upgrade Laboratories.
