Instruction a) New Seminar Course VPAT Special Topics in Pathology, Biochemistry Seminar. Course Coordinator This graduate seminar course aimed at clinical pathology residents served to fill a perceived gap in the biochemistry training of clinical pathology residents for board examination. Offered 3 semesters (Spring 2008, Fall 2008, Spring 2009), with 2-4 students in attendance during any given semester, all topics covered in the biochemistry portion of clinical pathology board examination were addressed. The greatest emphasis was placed on case summaries, using real case material identified through the teaching hospital, supplemented by directed textbook chapters reading assignments and article reviews. At the end of each semester students were given a written examination consisting of chemistry case material which mimicked the real time constraints and level of difficulty of specialty board examination in biochemistry. Within this course, and in conjunction with 8 other veterinary colleges, I contributed to and administered a 1.5 day mock board exam for the clinical pathology residents. This mock board exam had never done before at UGA. b) Standing Courses Taught VPAT Microscopic Pathology, Instructor. Pathology graduate students, 2 lectures (4 hours), Hematopoiesis (bone marrow, lymph nodes, spleen, thymus). Fall 2008 VPAT Systems Pathology, Instructor. Sophomore veterinary student class, 2 lectures and 1 AQS session (total 5 hours). Spring 2008 VPAT Clinical Pathology, Instructor. Sophomore veterinary student class, 3 lectures (3 hours). Spring 2007, 2008, 2009 Visiting Scholars Cytology instruction to two different visiting scholars, a surgical resident (Brendan Anders, April 2007, 8 hours) and a veterinary technician (Kristen, June 2007, 20 hours). I also spent a week instructing the Tifton Resident in hematology and cytology (Milagros Brookins, 30 hours, May 2008). c) Guest Lecturer: I was a guest lecturer April 15, 2011, in the Comparative Medicine Seminar Series at Emory University. I discussed clinical pathology in laboratory rabbits. d) Continuing Education: In March 2014 I presented at the SGVMA (South Georgia Veterinary Medical Association) quarterly CE conference in Tifton. The hour-long interactive case-based talk, entitled Likelihood Ratios: A better clinical option than Sensitivity, Specificity and Predictive Values, introduced clinicians to the Likelihood ratio as a diagnostic tool. This course fulfills the requirements for continuing education for maintenance of professional licensure for Georgia and South Carolina veterinarians. In August 2008 I presented Coagulation, a case-based approach which was offered at the Diagnostics in Veterinary Practice continuing education conference offered at the College of Veterinary Medicine through the Athens Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. With interactive case materials, I reviewed coagulation, coagulation testing, and discussed specific cases with the veterinary practitioners attending the course. I created a laminated hand-out for in-clinic use, summarizing the available diagnostic tests for coagulation, to assist clinicians diagnose coagulopathies in domestic species. This course fulfilled the requirements for continuing education for maintenance of professional licensure for Georgia and South Carolina veterinarians. 3. In the area of laboratory animal pathology, I have worked and continue to work with a private commercial pharmaceutical company in both diagnostic and research capacities, with multiple manuscripts resulting from this collaboration. I have taken courses in laboratory animal pathology, have published papers relating to multiple laboratory animal species, and have spoken locally at Emory University and at national meetings (AVMA) on laboratory animal pathology. I am the clinical pathologist for the new Georgia Laboratory Animal Diagnostics (GLAD) group which offers diagnostic services to animal researchers. In the area of bioinformatics, I particularly enjoy epidemiology, data analysis, and quality control. As these fields are applicable to a wide array of other subject matters, it provides me with an opportunity to be involved in diverse projects and to collaborate with an extensive assortment of researchers in other fields. e) Supervision of Student Research I am not responsible for supervision of any student research. However, I supervised Melinda Camus, clinical pathology resident, and Leo Susta, anatomic pathology resident and PhD graduate student, in different research capacities. Melinda Camus is now faculty in our department. I was the main mentor for Melinda Camus s peer-reviewed journal article, accepted by Veterinary Pathology, which was a retrospective epidemiological analysis of an unsubstantiated hypothesis frequently perpetuated in clinical pathology. The idea for the project and research was Dr. Camus, but my mentorship of her in epidemiology and its analysis, interpretation and data presentation was a significant intellectual contribution to the research. This provided her with instruction in an area of clinical pathology otherwise not addressed in her residency program. The research was presented as a poster at the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) Forum & Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) Convention 2009, as a platform presentation at the American College of Veterinary Pathologists Annual meeting, 2009, and was published in Veterinary Pathology. I also supervised Leo Susta in the fulfillment of the Merial contract to define a Lyme Disease (Borrelia burgdorferi) canine challenge model. We created and refined a synovium collection technique and scoring system for histological synovial lesions. In addition, we evaluated different combinations of joints to collect, as well as evaluated nonhistopathology tests, and performed a cost-benefit analysis to produce a final ideal recommendation to Merial to meet USDA requirements. An abstract on this Lyme Disease canine challenge model was presented at the American College 4.6

of Veterinary Pathologists and published in Veterinary Pathology. f) Editorship or Editorial Board Member 1) Editorial Review Board, Journal of Veterinary Diagnostic Investigations, 2009 to ) Assistant Editor, Diagnostic Veterinary Matters, Athens Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory Newsletter, University of Georgia, 2009 to ) In-house reviewer: Veterinary Laboratory Medicine: Clinical Pathology, 4th edition. Duncan JR, Prasse KW, Mahaffey EA, Latimer K. Iowa State Press, ) Ad Hoc Journal Peer Reviewer: Journal of Veterinary Diagnostic Investigation, Journal of Wildlife Diseases, Journal of Zoo and Wildlife Medicine, Veterinary Clinical Pathology, Journal of Small Animal Practice*, Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association*, Journal of the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science *I have been asked by JAVMA and JSAP editors to review only the epidemiological and statistical aspects of a submitted paper after disagreements between manuscript authors and reviewers, though I did not initially perform a review for those articles 4. Public Service Outreach Background: Beginning July 2014 I was assigned as the Outreach Services Chief, serving as the main liaison with practicing veterinarians for the Georgia Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories. Specific duties include site visits to clinics to maintain and recruit clients, attend regional meetings and create materials for promotion of the laboratories, organize annual continuing education meetings, improve and maintain our website, maintain Athens VetView catalog including online portal, address customer complaints, and provide support to the new LabExpress courier system. Accomplishments: Called all clinics in the courier area to promote the service, concurrently highlighting the prepaid UPS shipping option and online portal. Created over 50 new online portal accounts. Followed-up with ed instructions on how to use our services. Triaged and addressed many complaints regarding the courier service, and continue to do so. Created synergies with VTH Hospital communications director Cindy Rice for mutual benefit: handing out and discussing each other's areas on site visits and handing out each other's materials. Designed and produced a new Dlab booth banner coordinated with the VTH booth for mutual presentations at conferences, or independently as appropriate. Created new postcards to hand out during meetings & site visits, and new pricing Cheat Sheets for companion, farm, and equine patients. Visited Athens and Atlanta area clinics with significantly reduced caseloads to identify reasons for reduced submission. Summarized all results for distribution to faculty and identify potential action items. Worked with IT to ensure all Dlab tests were available to the VTH, and that the portal contained the appropriate VTH code to order those tests Created new VetView tests in response to client requests: Small Animal Renal Biochemistry Panel, Caprine/Ovine Diarrhea PCR Panel, Feline Respiratory PCR panels, etc.. Introduced my role and promoted the GVDL at the September 14, 2014, SGVMA quarterly meeting in Tifton. I performed a short survey regarding laboratory use by attending veterinarians and organized a $50 laboratory credit raffle for participants to volunteer information regarding their medical records software Staffed the GVDL booth at the GVMA Fall Convention November 7-9, 2014, in Atlanta. Organized a $150 raffle to attract clients to the booth. Promoted the courier service, and handed out new promotional materials (pricing cheat sheets, postcards, newsletter, etc..). Discussed assisting the GVMA with literature and developed a personal relationship with Louis Geneos, their Corporate Relations & Development Manager 4.7

Worked with the CVM s new web developer to revamp the GVDL website for ease of use and mobile access. Because of my efforts, we were the first section in the college to have our website updated. Since these updates, traffic to our website has increased visitors/month. Diagnostic Laboratory Service Duty: Pathology duty is shared among clinical and anatomic pathologists, with divided duties. Cytology duty is shared between me and another clinical pathologist, gross necropsy duty is shared among the anatomic pathologists, and all of us share in mail-in biopsy and mail-in necropsy duty. Samples are mailed in from veterinary clinics throughout the state of Georgia, as well as occasional out-of-state submissions. Below is a table demonstrating my caseload. I have the fastest turnaround time on biopsies among all the pathologists. My mean turn-around time for biopsies is 3.91 days from the time of submission. The group mean is 5.23 days with a range of days for all the pathologists. Year Cytology Cases Histology Cases In addition to discussing cases with client veterinarians pertaining to the cases I read, I also routinely consult on hematology and biochemistry cases and answer technical and medical questions for our staff. Because of so many phone calls by clients regarding basic test submission questions, I created a searchable spreadsheet with keywords of all available tests, fees, and turn-around times to assist receptionists with quickly responding to client s routine questions. This spreadsheet has become the basis for the website s online searchable database. Among my other significant contributions to the better management of the laboratory is the creation of a flexible computer program for equitable distribution of histopathology cases to in-house pathologists. The program assigns cases based on a combination of pathologist EFT s, necropsy credits, cytology credits, individual requests for off-service duty days, and scheduled days on or off service. This was previously performed by hand by the gross histology technician and was both inaccurate and labor-intensive. Approximately minutes daily is now able to be used for other activities because of this program. In addition, pathologists are now able to easily schedule off service days, which has allowed for faster turn-around time as cases are only assigned when pathologists do not have other obligations. Diagnostic Laboratory Project Manager, novel LIMS integration The University of Georgia the Athens Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (AVDL) tested and implemented a new laboratory information management system (LIMS), VetView, designed by an information technology (IT) development team at the University of Georgia. I was initially recruited to be a liaison between the UGA IT team and the Laboratory during this process, but eventually became the Project Manager due to the scope of the implementation process and the need for stronger leadership skills. The process of software testing, personnel training, implementation strategy, solution launch, and post-conversion issue management required intense focus and buy-in at all levels. Key success factors included establishing a multi-tiered team approach with central project management, active rapid communication which I coordinated, weekly meetings with section leaders, integrating testing with training, central 4.8

structured problem reporting, synchronizing time commitments, adequate IT resources, and upper management commitment. Unsuccessful strategies, attempted then abandoned, included relying solely on IT and super-users for testing, a structured internal ticketing system to report/track issues, passive communication before I became the project manager, and infrequent informal meetings. I continue to be the coordinator for implementation of necessary patches and updates to this software, communicating with the UGA IT team, attending monthly meetings, and strongly advocating for desired changes to the software. This project required very dedicated time and attention for the 2013 year, limiting my scholarly activities. Though this continues to require my ongoing attention, the expected time commitment going forward should be less demanding. International Programs: Grand Awards Judge, Animal Sciences Category. Specific New Achievements include: a. Directing the creation and co-authoring of two promotional Powerpoint presentations ( What is a Clinical Pathologist and Join Today! ) available for download at b. Redesigning and updating the membership brochure c. Including promotional materials in the registration kits of attendants to the annual SAVMA meeting (including our new brochure) and sending our promotional booth to the SAVMA meeting. d. Distribution of one-page notebook sized hematology atlases to every veterinary college in North America. These atlases were distributed in the clinical pathology course of each school, usually to sophomores. It is also now available online at: e. Funding up to 5 Clinical Pathology student seminars in multiple veterinary colleges. f. Distribution of a Clinical Pathology Jeopardy game, used in some seminars, to all our membership. 2) Advertising and Promotions Liaison, Veterinary Clinical Pathology Journal, 2009 to present. This was a new position advising Blackwell-Wiley on appropriate potential sponsors and advertisers to this journal. Because of my prior involvement in the American Society for Veterinary Clinical Pathology, I was approached by the journal s editorial board specifically to initiate this program. To fulfill this position, I examined all articles to be published in the journal as soon as they were accepted for publication (up to 6 months prior to publication), and then discussed potential sponsors and advertisers who may have a connection to each article and could be approached. Advice was general to the clinical pathology specialty. Examples range between how each potential manufacturer is positioned in the marketplace or similarities and differences to human medicine, to specific recommendations on how to bundle articles or how to approach competitors simultaneously. Initially, monthly telephone conferences were held to orient the publisher regarding the fundamentals of the veterinary pathology industry. Eventually there were quarterly conferences as the journal is quarterly and the publisher has become familiar with the industry. Wiley 4.9

eventually initiated a new electronic newsletter sent to veterinarians which would feature access to a select group of Wiley s veterinary articles for a period of 30 days. Each issue was themed or centered around a specific area of veterinary care, and my role was to identify appropriate articles from Veterinary Clinical Pathology applicable to each theme or topic. 3) Chemistry Case Review Session Co-Chair, American Society for Veterinary Clinical Pathology, 2009 and The American Society for Veterinary Clinical Pathology Executive Board asked me to participate in the chemistry case review session at the annual meeting in 2009 and I was one of two to four people reviewing and selecting cases for inclusion in this session, as well as co-chairing the session during the annual meeting. Because of issues raised during the process in 2009, I proposed and created standardized submission and writing formats to increase their value to educators and residents for board preparation and teaching. These standardized formats were adopted and used for the 2010 submissions. 4) Development Committee Member, American Society for Veterinary Clinical Pathology, 2006 to ) Quality Assurance Committee Member, American Society for Veterinary Clinical Pathology, 2010 to Method validation subcommittee volunteer.
