2 1. ABOUT IVIS the on-line veterinary community, - Our Organization - International Veterinary Information Service (IVIS) was established in 1998 as a not-for-profit, tax exempt organization in Ithaca NY, USA. - Our Goals - The primary purpose of IVIS is to provide a vehicle (the IVIS website) through which authoritative, up-todate, clinically relevant information can be distributed worldwide to: clinicians students academicians industry government and professionals working in animal health care At IVIS, we are convinced that Internet-based publication is the way of the future. The available technology results in a much faster publication process and allows for frequent updates, resulting in more complete and up-to-date information. Internet-based publication also extends the flow of information to sections of the veterinary community that previously had limited access to traditional resources. The IVIS goals include developing original veterinary publications in textbook format, satisfying the same high quality criteria as those adhered to by traditional veterinary book publishers. IVIS has adopted an organizational structure that includes (1) an Editorial Board consisting of leaders in the veterinary profession who advise on the choice of Editors for IVIS electronic-books; (2) Editors who develop original books (monographs or multi-author, multi-chapter textbooks) for which they have full discretion in the choice of content and authors, assume responsibility for quality, and take credit for their creative effort; and, (3) Contributing Authors who are selected by the Book Editors and recruited to provide original, authoritative contributions to their e-book. At IVIS, we believe that it is paramount that information provided in the IVIS website is of the highest quality, up-to-date, accurate and well presented. The rigorous implementation of a system based on Editorial Board, Editors and Contributing Authors insures that all publications adhere to the same high quality standards. Maintaining the confidence and respect of the professional and academic community remains our highest priority. In all its endeavors, IVIS remains very sensitive to the important role that Editors and Authors have in the success of this project. The widespread acceptance of this new medium for providing veterinary information and educational materials represents a heretofore unparalleled level of access and use of such resources, as well as a recognition and appreciation of the contributions made by our editors and authors. We continue to seek ways to increase our readership whereby we will also increase recognition of the efforts of our contributors and sponsors IVIS, all rights reserved. 2

3 - Our History - IVIS was organized and established in 1998 by academic faculty from veterinary colleges and veterinary research institutes in North America, Mexico and Europe. In January 1999, IVIS contracted The AdvantEdge to develop software and graphics for the IVIS website. In July, 1999 IVIS was incorporated as a New York Not-for-Profit Organization with an educational charter reviewed and consented to by the State of New York Education Department (08/05/99). IVIS is a New York Tax Exempt Organization. The IVIS Board of Directors is in the process of establishing an advertising policy that will permit a limited amount of taxable paid advertisement in addition to tax free and tax deductible general corporate and private sponsorship. On July , a restricted-access, demonstration version of the IVIS website was placed online for the use of prospective authors, editors and sponsors. On July 2000, the IVIS website was made available to veterinary practitioners and other animal health professionals by on-line registration. The most actively visited components are the Library sections on IVIS Books, the Proceedings, the Calendar of Veterinary Events, Career Opportunities and External Links to Veterinary Education websites. In 2001, new features were introduced to the IVIS website. The Calendar of Events was modified to make it more "user-friendly". Veterinary events can be searched for by species, by region or by type of event. A full-text search engine for chapters and proceedings was made available. Information on products is made available by adding links in book chapters, and by including links to the US FDA website. The IVIS Board of Veterinary Librarians was established to facilitate communication with the veterinary college libraries on several continents. As requested by many IVIS subscribers, deep-linking functionality was introduced, allowing visitors to use URLs to link directly to a specific book chapter, as a means of promoting the website, and facilitating recruitment of authors and editors. The Spanish initiative was created to provide translations of IVIS publications into Spanish. This initiative has been very well received by the Spanishspeaking veterinary community. IVIS was pleased to host the proceedings for the meeting "Genes, Dogs, and Cancer: Emerging Concepts in Molecular Diagnosis and Therapy held" at Keystone CO, USA. In 2002, the IVIS database of Quick Links to Veterinary Journals was introduced, providing instant access to abstracts of veterinary and related journals. IVIS became the official host for the International Symposium on Equine Reproduction (ISER) organization, and published the proceedings for two conferences - the "Genes, Dogs, and Cancer: 2nd Annual Canine Cancer Conference" and "The Mayday Conference: A Cross-Species Approach to Pain and Analgesia". The IVIS Bookstore was created in association with amazon.com to offer a convenient access to printed veterinary books. In 2003, the American Association for Equine Practitioners (AAEP), the world's largest professional association of equine veterinarians, entrusted IVIS with the on-line publication of the Proceedings of the Annual Meeting of the AAEP. Fifty-eight (58) new book chapters were published as well as the proceedings of the third Canine Cancer Conference. Four new book projects were initiated: Veterinary Toxicology, Laboratory Animal Medicine and Management, Atlas of Hematology and Veterinary Care of Donkeys. The IVIS Veterinary Drug database was launched as a searchable and browsable compendium of over 3000 veterinary drug products and formulations with links to manufacturers websites and to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration animal product database. In 2004, IVIS published the complete book on Veterinary Toxicology by Dr. Val Beasley from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Two new books were added to the IVIS Library: A Guide to Hematology in Dogs and Cats and A Concise Review of Veterinary Virology. The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP), the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP), the American 2006 IVIS, all rights reserved. 3

4 Academy of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics (AAVPT), the Italian Society of Equine Veterinarians (SIVE) and the Belgian Equine Practitioners Society (BEPS) chose IVIS to publish the proceedings of their annual meetings. A new section entitled "IVIS Reviews in Veterinary Medicine" was created. In 2005, the translations were expanded to include translation of selected manuscripts in Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, French, and Russian. Eight associations were added to the IVIS proceedings section: World Buiatrics Congress (WBC), World Equine Airways Society (WEAS), World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA), European Association of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging (EAVDI), European Association of Zoo and Wildlife Veterinarians (EAZWV), European Society of Veterinary Orthopaedics and Traumatology (ESVOT), Geneva Congress of Equine Medicine and Surgery, and the Hill's European Symposium on Canine Brain Ageing,. On December 31, IVIS counts 118,218 subscribers. In 2006, the Proceedings Section has been expanded to include the new Proceedings of the Genes, Dogs and Cancer: 4th Canine Cancer Conference, the International Veterinary Radiology Association (IVRA), the International Conference on Equine Exercise Physiology (ICEEP), the Small Animal Veterinary Association (SCIVAC), the European Equine Nutrition & Health Congress (EENHC), the Hill's European Symposium on Canine Brain Ageing, the International Porcine Veterinary Conference (IPVC), World Buiatrics Congress (WBC), World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA), the 14th International Symposium in Lameness in Ruminants and the Association des Vétérinaires Equins Français (AVEF). We are currently in discussions with other associations to add their proceedings in IVIS. In the book section, more books have been added including Clinical Avian Medicine by Harrison and Lightfoot, and Dermatology for the Small Animal Practitioner by Mueller. Translations have been expanded and the website now includes publications in English, Spanish, French, Italian, Check, Russian and Dutch. Readership continues to grow at an increasing rate. In March 2006, the monthly increase reached 6,553 new members per month (211 new registrations per day). On October 31, 2006, the IVIS readership has reached 171,944 registered users IVIS, all rights reserved. 4

6 3. SPONSORSHIP ACTION PLAN: - Opportunity - In 2000, with the help of countless volunteers and financial support from a small group of private and corporate sponsors, IVIS has initiated the development of the on-line IVIS Library. Today the IVIS website includes textbooks, proceedings and reviews on a variety of topics and enjoys a reputation of excellence and quality. Membership is now over 178,635 registered members, thereby making IVIS the largest veterinary community worldwide. To attract corporate sponsors, IVIS has developed a set of goals to better define its planned growth and future direction, to indicate the activities and educational services that will be supported by corporate donations, and to delineate the special features that are being developed to enhance recognition of corporate sponsors and to utilize sponsors as information resources for the veterinary community. The overall goal of IVIS is to become the largest, most reliable, most respected, and most active veterinary community worldwide. Its mission is to provide the different target groups (practitioners, students, industry and academia) with up-to-date and relevant information and to improve the information flow to and among these groups. IVIS is structured to provide a common ground for practitioners and veterinary industry and intends to promote further development of this synergism in the future. Sponsorship of the IVIS project and website represent an opportunity for the pharmaceutical and other veterinary-related industries to form a long-term relationship with the veterinary community. IVIS wants to make it possible for the industry to communicate with this community. Thanks to highly advanced programming it is possible to communicate at a national, continental or global level with IVIS subscribers. No matter if your company is operating in one or several countries or active on a global basis, IVIS can customize page display and communications to specific sections of its community (limit to specific country of residence and/or species interest). - IVIS Website Development and Expansion of Content - Sponsorship funds will provide the resources to achieve the following specific goals: Recruitment of book editors in areas not currently covered Expansion of the IVIS veterinary drug database into a full true veterinary pharmacopoeia with authoritative text on drug actions and interaction, as well as on-line html and printable package inserts Offering the IVIS website as a venue for the publication of conference Proceedings. - Promotion of the IVIS Website - Sponsorship funds will aid in the conduct of an integrated communication campaign to promote the IVIS website and increase membership and participation in each of the main target groups - veterinarians, students, industry and academia IVIS, all rights reserved. 6
