5 #5 WATCH YOUR BACK Back injuries are the #1 occupational injury overall #2 for veterinary personnel. Multiple employees should be involved if lifting over 40 lbs. Lift with legs. NOT THE BACK!

6 #4 GET THE POINT (NOT!) Needle sticks and injuries with sharp objects are the second most common occupational injury. #1 for veterinary professionals. Never re-cap needles and place all sharps immediately in the designated containers

7 #3 GET THE LEAD OUT Diet, exercise, sleep and stress reduction are as important as studying to doing well in a stressful academic environment

8 #2 EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED Expect animals to behave like animals Many animal-related injuries can be avoided through proper restraining techniques and an understanding of animal behavior

11 Rabies is one of the oldest and most feared human infections with the highest case fatality rate of any infectious disease. In the United States, there has been an average of three fatal human cases per year since Rabies is a preventable viral disease of mammals Rabies has a worldwide distribution with few exceptions, including Antarctica, New Zealand, Japan, Sweden, Norway, Spain and some Caribbean Islands. Rabies is found throughout the United States except Hawaii.

12 Rabies Vaccination The first rabies vaccine was developed in 1885 World Health Organization estimates that between 30,000 and 70,000 people die worldwide of rabies each year. Most of these deaths occur in developing countries because of inadequate control of rabies in domesticated animals. Rabies vaccine is made from killed rabies virus. It cannot cause rabies.

13 PURDUE COLLEGE OF VETERINARY MEDICINE HEALTH REQUIREMENTS Rabies Vaccine 3 doses of either Rabavert or Imovax rabies vaccine given at days 0, 7, and 21 or 28 Complete your vaccines by the end of first semester PPD skin test (tuberculosis skin test) Antigen is administered on day 0 and the test is read hours later by a medical professional Complete your PPD test by the end of the first semester If you had a negative test within one year of matriculation, you don t need another one If you have a positive test, you will need to see a medical professional for evaluation and clearance to continue school

14 PURDUE UNIVERSITY VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS Indiana state law requires all new, regularly enrolled students attending residential campuses of Indiana public universities be immunized against: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, and Rubella (German measles) 2 MMR vaccines AFTER the first birthday Diphtheria and Tetanus within the last ten years

15 Where can I get these immunizations/tests? -Purdue University Student Health -Local pharmacies -Tippecanoe County Health Department -West Lafayette or Lafayette medical offices -Your family doctor at home How do I need to prove I had the immunizations/tests? -For Purdue University- go to the PUSH website and enter patient portal, enter your health information -For Purdue College of Veterinary Medicine- sign attestation form stating you completed the requirements

Enter your MMR and tetanus immunization history (do this before August 30, 2017) Make your appointments after Monday Aug. 21 for immunizations and tests at Lyles Porter Hall (make one appointment for each day you need to go to Lyles Porter Hall)

21 BY THURSDAY AUGUST 24TH!!! Everyone who wants PUSH to file a health insurance claim for your immunizations/tests: Submit a legible copy of your insurance card to CVM Student Services Office Both sides Policy holder s name and DOB Return to the Student Services Office in a sealed envelope with your name and DOB on the outside OR bring insurance card to your appointment in Lyles Porter Hall

22 INSURANCE LETTERS Your insurance company will almost surely deny your insurance claim for rabies vaccination the first time If they do, appeal the decision (they are banking on the chance you won t appeal) Submit a letter from the Vet School supporting your claim If you require a letter to justify coverage of the vaccinations, please request this letter from the Student Services office

23 OTHER FAQS Keep your own records of your PPD and rabies series and pass the information along to PUSH for an easy way to store the information. You do not need rabies titers or boosters in Indiana but you may need a booster depending on the site of your externship or practice.
