What is the best way to administer successful injections? How do you know when an injection was done properly? How do you avoid residues and/or physical hazards during the injection process? 2 What delivery systems are available? Traditional syringe/needle Single use Multi use/auto syringes Large dose vs. low dose (<1cc) High viscosity vs. water based What delivery systems are available? Needleless systems Air or gas powered delivery Battery operated Advantage of no needles Potentially restricted volume 6 7 Gather all equipment needed into one location. Use a bucket, belt or grooming tray Include sharps container for used needles Decide what products will be administered and determine the best practices for product handling. Get all needed products for injection. Vaccines, medication, sterile water, etc. Make sure to have ample supply of needles appropriate for the age/size of pig to be injected 8 9 Needle Usage: (Information from the PQA Plus Certification Manual V 1.2) Intramuscular Injection Gauge Length Baby pigs 18 or 20 5/8 or ½ Nursery 16 or 18 ¾ or 5/8 Finisher 16 1 Breeding Stock 14, 15 or 16 1 or 1 ½ Subcutaneous Injection Gauge Length Nursery 16 or 18 ½ Finisher 16 ¾ Breeding Stock 14 or 16 1 Check to make sure equipment is in operating condition, clean and ready to go. Check calibration of syringe dose if necessary. Equipment can be checked using sterile water prior to using the intended products. Are all hoses and connecting lines in good working order? Are there any leaks in the seals that could cause bubbles?
3 Have proper marking devices for the individual pig or pens for marking treatments on paper. Location, location, location!!! Intramuscular (IM) = 99% of shots given If a producer considers using an alternative location for injections, both veterinarian AND packer should be consulted on the potential acceptability of using these techniques Giving Injections Intravenous injection (IV) Uncommon; Directly inject into a vein Intraperitoneal injection (IP) Uncommon; in the abdomen Subcutaneous injection (SQ) In skin of the axilla of the pig (underarm) or flank Larger pigs can be injected behind the ear Use of proper restraint of animals (varies by age) Allows for proper placement of the injection and reduces the risk of abscess formation Use of stalls for breeding herd restraint Crowding of pigs in a pen situation ti Manually picking up and restraining pigs All options should be age appropriate When giving an injection, make sure to have a clean area on the animal free of manure or other materials (avoid abscesses). Make a one time injection straight into the target area. Avoid placing multiple injections in one area when giving more than one product. Change needles often to maintain cleanliness and sharpness of needles. Never straighten a bent needle. Each producer should create an SOP for how to handle an animal(s) with a potential broken needle
4 Improper administration can lead to abscess formation, scarring and loss of performance of products given After you complete your injections Put away any open/used medications/vaccines and wipe down bottles with a disinfectant wipe and place in the refrigerator. Keep all used products in the refrigerator Properly dispose of one time use vaccines and empty bottles (see local requirements for proper disposal requirements) After you complete your injections Thoroughly clean and wipe down injection equipment including trays, buckets or belts. Use only mild soapy water for syringes. Do not use disinfectant for cleaning of syringes they can leave unwanted tdresidues. Rinse with sterile or distilled water. Allow equipment to air dry and store in a clean plastic container with a lid to keep out dirt/dust. Recordkeeping It is critically important to record the injection information for each pig or group of pigs treated. For withdrawal tracking For follow up with additional injections, when indicated d To evaluate treatment effects Records should be kept on file for at least one year after the pig(s) have been marketed Recordkeeping According to the PQA Plus Manual v 1.2, information to be kept includes: Animal(s) treated ID or pen ID Date of administration (for all days) Drug(s) administered i d Route of administration (IM, IP, SQ, etc.) Person giving the injection Amount given for each product Withdrawal time prior to harvest Summary Injections are a key tool producers can use to maintain herd health. Injections, when given properly, provide benefits both to pigs and to producers through improved animal health
5 Summary Technique and preparation are key in optimizing the injections you give. Avoid dosing issues Keep all equipment clean and in working order Record any and all products given within a herd, including pen and barn treatments.
