5 from the president 2018 is certainly going to be one we will all remember with very tough seasonal conditions across the country. I certainly hope everyone is getting through lambing well and feed supplies are hanging on. Let s hope that a late start to the season leads into a good spring for all. On the flip side, we are seeing record prices for lamb and mutton across the country. Over the last few weeks we have seen White Suffolk sired lambs continually being mentioned in the top prices across sale yards and over the hooks. With lambs still being a sought after commodity, the strong returns for our clients is looking very positive. I will say though, this isn t a time for the breed to stop striving for success. We must continue to stay at the forefront of the industry selecting the correct genetics for our clients and processors. With challenging seasons like this year do we need to ask ourselves - is there anything we need to change? Are the rams we are breeding meeting the industry standards for our clients and the processors? It has been a busy start to the year for our Federal Council planning breed advertising and promotions. Peter Angus and Nikki Ward have done a fantastic job working with Fairfax Media on the national White Suffolk liftout in all major rural papers. With 114,000 copies distributed Australia wide and a good mix of stud advertisements, success stories from our clients and industry news I think this will be hugely successful for the breed. We are now in our third year of running a WIN TV advertising campaign and a new revamped ad will start going to air in August and September leading into ram selling season. Once again the White Suffolk breed is going to be well represented at LambEx. This year s event takes us to Perth, Western Australia in early August where we are sponsoring the Young Guns competition for the third year in partnership with NAB. The large scale exposure our breed gets at whole industry level is second to none. We will be once again having a stand at the event with all our promotional material promoting the benefits of our breed. Plans for the 2019 national conference are well under way with the location being Robe in the south east of South Australia. Once again it is a great opportunity to catch up with fellow members to discuss the future of our breed and hear the latest news from industry representatives. With Robe being a popular tourist venue we will be prebooking some accommodation. While I can t promise it, there is a chance some of the local delicacy could be on the menu (crayfish). Finally with the show season fast approaching I wish everyone great success showing their stock to fellow breeders and the wider public. The exposure that the breed and individual studs receive through the show season is extremely important showcasing the latest genetics and what the breed has on offer. All indicators are leading to a successful ram selling season with the increased returns we have seen in the market place. This gives us as stud breeders a fantastic opportunity to source great genetics to fit our programs. I look forward to catching up with you all soon and please if you have any queries, don t hesitate to contact any of our Council members. Anthony Hurst Australian White Suffolk Association 5

I take this opportunity to thank members for their support of the promotional liftout in advertising, on-farm story leads and willingness to assist with content ideas. Without your support the liftout would not be possible. I would also like to point out the work undertaken by Fairfax Media for the liftout. It has been a pleasure to work with a great team of journalists and I am positive the liftout will be a successful promotional venture for the Association and breed. It is pleasing to see that we have had a run of new members lately and several enquiries about joining the AWSA. 14 SA Sheep Expo teaches students the sheep industry Information courtesy ABC Landline, Ian Turner, and SA Sheep Expo The 2018 SA Sheep Expo held in April attracted more than 90 entrants from SA, NSW and VIC in its third year. Attendees were treated to an informative program focusing on sheep handling, health and management. They were shown low-stress stock handling techniques by Nic Kentish, taught a few sale tricks by auctioneer Chris Howie, and given an insight into a career as a shearer by two-time world champion Shannon Warnest. Other topics focused on nutrition, genetics, animal health and breeding values. SA Sheep Expo committee chairman Steve Kellock said the event was really building to something big. I think next year will be even bigger again, he said. He said it was great to see so many young people so passionate about the industry. They re all kids who love sheep and love working with stock, so they re a pleasure to teach, he said. they had built with their sheep in the handler competition on the final day of the Expo, with the points awarded going towards their overall age group score. Along with the Association support, the breed was well represented by a number of junior breeders, including Kate Heinrich (Ella Matta stud), Chloe Mitchell (Gemini stud), Harrison Wall (Borrehma stud), Josh Nourse (Hot Sauce stud), Lachlan and Stefan Grossman (Koonawarra stud) and Benjamin Frick (Gypsum Hill stud). Benjamin Frick took out third overall in the Junior age group category and Kate Heinrich was awarded third place overall in the Intermediate age group. Benjamin, Harrison Wall, Josh Nourse and Lachlan Grossman also placed in their age group handler classes. Josh Nourse, 22, has participated in all three Expos and Mr Kellock said the aim of encouraging young people to the wool and meat industries was beginning to pay dividends, saying there were some participants from previous years who were now learning to shear, and others who had become stock agents. The ASSBA Award of Excellence and SASAG highest senior achiever prize went interstate to Victoria for the third time, with Emily Webb Ware, Yea, Vic, impressing the judges. The Australian White Suffolk Association was a breed society sponsor of the event with a number of studs providing White Suffolk rams and ewes that were assigned to attendees to handle and learn good husbandry skills. They had the opportunity to showcase the relationship Last year's senior achiever winner Tess Runting, Mornington Peninsula, Vic, with the 2018 winner Emily Webb Ware, Yea, Vic. 14 Australian White Suffolk Association

15 has gained valuable knowledge and experience to put into practice as a livestock agent for Quality Livestock. When I read about the Expo I was keen to go because I am not from a stud breeding or big sheep background there is always more to learn, he said. The Expo is a great way to meet other like-minded people and when I am at field days or markets I am always running into people I have met at the Expo. Harrison Wall has many years ahead of him yet before he has to decide on a particular career path, but his Expo experience has already had him focussing on possibilities. I really enjoy design and machinery, so I am hoping I can combine these two interests to assist Australian farmers, plus I m hoping to continue to be involved in the family s White Suffolk stud. I definitely recommend the Expo to others, especially the practical hands-on sessions. It was a lot of fun and I enjoyed hanging out with other kids interested in sheep, Harrison said. With such a wide range of sheep industry subjects there is something for everyone at the SA Sheep Expo, including the opportunity to apply for scholarships offered by the Expo s highly valued sponsors. Photos courtesy of Ian Turner, Superior Selections Kate Heinrich, Ella Matta stud, Parndana SA, was supported by her grandfather and Association foundation member Peter Heinrich. 17 Drought feeding Article courtesy Meat & Livestock Australia Residues In a period of drought or a dry time by-products not usually fed to livestock and failed crops that were intended to be harvested can end up being used as feed. In this situation, it is critical that producers understand the history of the feed and whether it may have been exposed to chemicals. Confinement feeding Droughts and dry times are part of Australian farming enterprises. They result in increased costs, decreased production and income, and increased mental and physical strain on those affected. Making decisions Periods of drought require producers to make important decisions that will have short-term and long-term impacts on a farming enterprise. Droughts can be very difficult, but planning and management based on sound information will help producers through the experience. For producers facing a feed shortage, a range of options are available including selling stock or buying in feed. The earlier the decisions are made the better (and usually the economic cost is minimised). Each farm situation is different and needs to be considered on its own merits. Producers should know what livestock they can afford to feed through to the expected break and gain an appreciation of what the value of their livestock is in the current market. This will allow for a realistic assessment of the relative merit of management strategies such as selling, agistment and feeding. Animal welfare is critical when feed and water resources are under pressure and producers must always act in a way that delivers a good animal welfare outcome, even if that means destocking. Nutrition Livestock require a combination of protein, energy, roughage and minerals to maintain good rumen function and maintain body function. The condition score of livestock should be monitored throughout the drought and feeding regulated to ensure the condition score reflects reasonable animal health and welfare and suits the production requirements of the enterprise. If reasonable condition cannot be maintained, livestock should be sold or agisted. Confinement feeding is a drought feeding practice typically applied to sheep that aims to promote animal health and welfare while preserving ground cover and land condition across the majority of the property. This is achieved by confining livestock to a small area where they are fed a total ration. Successful confinement feeding relies on good site selection, an appropriate mob size and stocking density and the provision of appropriate nutrition. Management considerations Monitoring livestock condition The condition score of livestock should be monitored throughout the drought and feeding regulated to ensure the condition score suits the production requirements of the enterprise and maintains the health of the animal. Animal health and welfare The affects of drought on animal health will depend on the class of livestock eg dry versus pregnant stock, the body condition of the livestock as they enter a period of drought, the feeding regime adopted by the producer and the length of the drought. The effects of parasites and disease may also be more pronounced with the added burden of drought. Producers should at all times be aware of and effectively manage the health and welfare of their livestock. On farm biosecurity Stock owners need to be aware of the additional risks associated with introducing fodder and agisting stock during drought times. To ensure any possible introductions of undesirable plant species, feeding should be restricted to specially identified areas of the property that can be easily accessed and treated if necessary. If stock are moved into another region, producers need to be aware of the endemic diseases and toxic plants that may exist in those areas. Australian White Suffolk Association 17

20 Strategic 100-Day Plan is the key to lamb survival and lifelong productivity ARTICLE COURTESY OF ZOETIS KEY MESSAGES: The first 100 days of a lamb s life hold the highest risk of disease and death. A proactive animal health program at marking and weaning will optimise weaning percentages and lamb performance. The Survive to Thrive 100-Day Plan offers producers a comprehensive and effective strategy to protect lambs and support lifetime productivity. The first 100 days of a lamb s life hold the highest risk of contracting a range of diseases, which are costing Australian sheep producers more than half a billion dollars in lost production and control measures each year. However, recent research indicates many of these health impacts can be avoided through cost-effective prevention strategies. 1 Leading animal health company, Zoetis, has developed the comprehensive Survive to Thrive 100-Day Plan, 2 which assists producers to effectively and successfully manage the health of their lambs during this critical period. The 100-Day Plan delivers a simple and strategic vaccination and drench program, carried out at marking and weaning, which will boost weaner survival rates and set them up for a lifetime of productivity. Prevention the best option Research indicates that for a range of priority diseases impacting Australian sheep enterprises, prevention is the most cost-effective and productive option. 1 A vaccination program at marking and weaning, for diseases such as Ovine Johne s Disease (OJD), cheesy gland, and the five main clostridial diseases black disease, black leg, malignant oedema, pulpy kidney, and tetanus offers the basis of a lifetime of immunity. OJD is estimated to cost Australia s sheep industry $35 million each year. Infected sheep can shed infective bacteria from as young as eight months of age, while clinical signs of OJD may not be apparent for 2 3 years. Often OJD is not diagnosed until a significant proportion of the flock is already infected and deaths are occurring. Vaccinating lambs with Gudair at less than 16 weeks of age is a key preventative measure, to substantially reduce the shedding of infective bacteria. 1 A single 1 ml dose of Gudair at marking provides lifelong immunity against OJD. 1 Effective combination vaccines, such as Glanvac 6 can prevent disease, boost weaning percentages, improve meat and wool quality, and set the foundation for optimal growth. Glanvac 6 protects against cheesy gland (CLA), and all five priority clostridial diseases with an initial vaccination at marking and a follow-up booster at weaning Australian White Suffolk Association

21 Effective long-term control strategies seek to minimise the impact of parasites but also reduce the rate of development of drench resistance. 1 A strategic drench at weaning with a highly-effective combination drench, such as Startect, will control worms, reduce larval contamination of pastures for the benefit of the whole flock and can delay the development of resistance to other drench classes. 8 Supplementing growth Producers can achieve additional productivity gains in their 100-day program by incorporating tactical vitamin B12 supplementation. Vitamin B12 is vital for energy production and growth, with rapidly-growing sheep having the highest demands. Levels in sheep depend on ingestion of cobalt, with cobalt deficiency determined by soil type and pasture maturity and type. Supplementing growing stock with vitamin B12 has been shown to improve weight gain in lambs by up to 2.8kg over 12 weeks. 9 Even in non-deficient cobalt areas B12 has been shown to deliver an additional 0.5kg over 106 days. 10 About Zoetis Arthritis is a common problem of lambs, particularly where marking, or any activity that risks damaging the skin, is carried out in wet muddy conditions. Erysipelas arthritis is a common cause of carcase trimming with the average trim of 3kg per arthritic affected carcase costing producers $17.25 per carcase. 5 Stringent hygiene and vaccinating with Eryvac at marking, with a follow-up booster at weaning will protect lambs against Erysipelas arthritis. Scabby mouth is an easily-transmitted viral disease that causes scabs and pustules, usually around the mouth and face of affected animals. The disease is most common in lambs and weaners during summer. Animals become infected with scabby mouth when abrasions in the skin allow the virus to enter and establish. One scratch with Scabigard at marking will control the skin lesions associated with scabby mouth6 and reduce the risk of costly consequences, including loss of condition, lameness, fly strike, mastitis and death. Internal parasites Internal parasites (including Barber s pole worm) pose the greatest animal health cost to Australian sheep producers, at around $436M annually. 1 Young sheep are most susceptible to the effects of internal parasite infections. If uncontrolled, death rates can approach 100%. Ineffective control, most commonly due to increasing drench resistance, reduces ewe milk production by 22%, liveweight gains by about 15% and wool growth by 10%. 7 Zoetis is the leading animal health company, dedicated to supporting its customers and their businesses. Building on more than 75 years of experience in animal health, Zoetis discovers, develops, manufactures and markets veterinary vaccines and medicines, complemented by diagnostic products and genetic tests and supported by a range of services. Zoetis serves veterinarians, livestock producers and people who raise and care for farm and companion animals with sales of its products in 120 countries. 23 Animal welfare and biosecurity compliance part of LPA audits Article courtesy of Meat & Livestock Australia 8 June 2018 On-farm animal welfare and biosecurity management practices are key elements of the Livestock Production Assurance (LPA) program and compliance with these additional elements will be enforced under the program s random audit system from July These two additional requirements were added to the five existing elements property risk assessment, safe and responsible animal treatments, safe livestock feed, preparation for dispatch, and livestock transactions and movements in October 2017, with compliance set to be enforced in the approximately 2000 random on-farm audits carried out nationally each year. To meet the biosecurity requirements under the enhanced LPA program, every LPA accredited producer needs to have a Farm Biosecurity Plan in place and implement this on their farm. LPA accredited producers must also be able to demonstrate that their on-farm handling of livestock is consistent with the Australian Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines. Those responsible for livestock management need to have a copy of the Standards and Guidelines, be familiar with its content, complete the LPA Learning module, and advise and oversee others handling livestock. AUS-MEAT auditor Brendan Ryan conducts LPA audits from Werribee in south-western Victoria to Naracoorte in South Australia, and up to the NSW border. Since February, he has been covering animal welfare and biosecurity as part of the audits however, in order to allow producers to familiarise themselves with the expanded program, compliance with the new areas was not being enforced. Most producers are on the right track in meeting the requirements, they just need to spend some more time demonstrating what they are doing, Mr Ryan said. When they are notified about an audit, my advice to producers is to not panic, they just need to read the information pack carefully and they will know what to do. It s things producers do every day - managing and recording the introduction and movement of livestock; controlling people, equipment and vehicles entering the property - where practical; and monitoring and managing the health of their livestock. A Biosecurity Plan template has been developed to help producers complete this requirement which really helps to make it easy. Mr Ryan said in terms of on-farm animal welfare, producers must be able to show they have completed appropriate training in animal welfare. They need to take a look at the LPA Learning module which asks practical questions about animal care. Complete the module, print out the completion certificate, and they ll make their auditor happy, Mr Ryan said. Jo Quigley, Chief Operating Officer of the Integrity Systems Company (ISC), which manages the LPA program, said customer confidence in Australian red meat underpins the success and growth of Australia s livestock industry, and protects the livelihoods of more than 200,000 producers. Under LPA, on-farm systems are required to ensure the management and handling of livestock is consistent with customer expectations from more than 100 global markets that buy Australian red meat, Ms Quigley said. We must be able to prove we treat our animals ethically and manage them in a manner that minimises the risk of infectious disease. The LPA audits verify on-farm practices and help to provide that proof for our customers. All LPA accredited producers may be selected through the random audit system. Property Identification Codes (PICs) are selected for audit at random from the database of all LPA-accredited producers, including producers with just a few livestock. Resources to help producers plan for audits are available at: Find the Australian Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines at: animalwelfarestandards.net.au The Biosecurity Plan doesn t need to be a massive document. Producers just need to think about the things they do with regards to biosecurity on their own farm, and document it using a template. Australian White Suffolk Association 23

25 White Suffolk rams are producing top quality, heavy suckers near Glencoe Article courtesy of Ruth Schwager, The Land 17 January 2018 Brian and Rosh Lewis with some of their White Suffolkcross sheep at Grahams Valley, near Glencoe. NEW England lamb producers Brian and Rosh Lewis are getting good results with White Suffolk rams, with their lambs achieving strong prices and impressive results in one of the top prime lamb competitions in the country. The couple runs about 500 ewes, alongside a cattle enterprise, over about 485 hectares at Euroka and Killara, Grahams Valley, near Glencoe. The Lewis family the couple works in partnership with Mr Lewis parents, Darrell and Dawn has been using White Suffolk rams for the past eight years after a shift from Poll Dorsets. Mr Lewis said he focuses on structure and type, looking for good muscle and length, when selecting rams bred a local White Suffolk stud at Glencoe. The rams are joined to crossbred ewes bred by Mr Lewis to produce a second-cross lamb. The shift to White Suffolks has paid off, particularly in tough seasons. When it starts getting dry the Poll Dorsets put all their effort into growing wool, instead of meat and carcase, but the White Suffolk lambs seem to look fresher when it stays dry. The aim is to improve a paddock every two years on each place. The family had a chance to celebrate its hard work with success in the annual Dubbo Show prime lamb hoof and hook competition last year. It was the second time the commercial producers had tested their sheep against some of the top studs in the country after entering a pen in the 2016 event. In 2017 they sent three pens of six lambs, and the decision paid off. The Lewis lambs were second in the heavy export hoof class, and they had the heaviest lamb in the show. The pen average was 75kg and he weighed about 89kg, Mr Lewis said. The family also had the heaviest carcase in show at 52kg, with the highest dressing percentage of 61 per cent. Their lambs were first, second and third in the White Suffolk heavy export hook class and came first overall in the all breeds heavy export hook class. We also received the Dubbo agents choice award and were the most successful exhibitors, Mrs Lewis said. "We were very surprised, especially because not one lamb had any grain they were all just grassfed. In past dry seasons when we ve had to feed the cattle we haven t had to feed the sheep they re able to hold on for longer. About 100 ewes are kept every second year and remaining lambs are either sold through saleyards at Glen Innes or Guyra, or go direct to an abattoir in Tamworth. They used to go Wallangarra (on the Queensland border) which suited us, but they ve been going to Thomas Foods at Tamworth, Mr Lewis said. Most of the lambs are sold as suckers, about five months of age, and usually weighing from 50 kilograms to 60kg. The lambs are purely grassfed, on improved pastures which include a mix of fescues and ryegrass. We also try to spread superphosphate every 12 months, if not, every two years, and it makes a big difference to pastures and stock weights, Mr Lewis said. 28 White Suffolks adapt to dry conditions at Pearsby Article courtesy of Ruth Schwager Nestled among the infamous Traprock west of Stanthorpe, Pearsby is home to the Reimers family; a generational farming family continuing the proud tradition of sheep production which their ancestors began in the early 1900s. Owned and managed by Peter and Amanda Reimers, along with their three children, the 4800-hectare property runs more than 2300 head of SAMM/Merino-cross and White Suffolk-cross sheep. Predominantly commercial producers, the Reimers family have diversified their Merino wool enterprise over the years to incorporate White Suffolk rams from a local stud, for the meat trade. We have our Merino enterprise and we also have our prime lamb operation, Mr Reimers said. As wool prices began to decline several years ago, Pearsby gradually diversified into meat sheep. As we went forward, we didn t lose the wool side of it but, in our situation where we can t get very high lambing percentages, we have the wool in a bad year so we can cover our costs. We ve been putting our White Suffolk rams over the older ewes to scan them in lamb and sell them that way. Mr Reimers said he preferred the White Suffolk for their open faces, bare points and ease of lambing. Last year the joining percentage in the crossbred operation was around 115 per cent with the Merinos joining at about 90pc. Staggering the joining of the White Suffolks and Merinos mean the Reimers are able to concentrate on their separate operations. We join in March to lamb for early August and then the Merino operation is about a month later, that gives us enough time to prepare. The Reimers family have recently finished their scans of the maiden crossbred ewes with 94pc in lamb. Of the 440 older Merino ewes which were joined to the crossbreds, only nine have come back dry. Though joining percentages have remained high, Mr Reimers said the continued dry weather in the Stanthorpe area meant lambing percentages were often lower than expected. We have no trouble getting them in lamb, it s just getting them on the ground. As part of ongoing drought management, the Reimers have chosen to sell their older ewes along with their replacement young ewes which would normally be kept on in a good season. This is the driest I have ever seen it but we re still battling away. We ve chosen to sell the ewes off in order to concentrate on getting lambs on the ground and give ourselves some more room, Mr Reimers said. 28 Australian White Suffolk Association

29 With little to no improved pasture left on the property, the Reimers said their decision to buy in feed earlier in the year saved them with local hay and feed supply running low. People are having to truck feed up from Victoria for their stock. Mr Reimers said the drought often dictated where and when the family were able to sell their crossbred lambs. If it permits, we usually sell at 3-4 months of age with the lead going through the saleyards and the rest through AuctionsPlus, normally at around 35kg. The last couple years, because of the dry, we have been lotfeeding lambs ourselves and this year, we sold them over the hook at Tamworth due to the lambs having no pasture. A lot of our lambs often go through the saleyards at Warwick as it s the only centre in Queensland. The prices aren t as high as down south but it s an opportunity to sell close to home and we have a bit of competition and good support from local butchers. Mr Reimers said he was able to capitalise on high market prices at the time by finishing the lambs on grain. Opening up Pearsby s paddocks to allow access to remaining surface water, Mr Reimers said he was now hand-feeding his flock every second day. We rely on the summer rainfall for our improved pasture but the past two summers it hasn t been there. We re trail feeding barley, corn and lupins and, closer to their point of lambing, we ll have a bit of lucerne hay to get the ewes to take to lamb. With culling rates sitting at around 30pc, Mr Reimers said he was looking for length, depth of body and ewes with a solid frame. We need good muscling in the twist. Mr Reimers said, with the wool market continuing to gain traction, he would remain focussed on his Merino, White Suffolk and SAMM/Merino-cross operation. My passion is the wool and sheep industry and in the achievement of breeding sheep that can survive in our environment and produce the best fibre and meat possible. That s what drives me, Mr Reimers said. We ll keep doing what we re doing and we may join more of our crossbred rams over our merino ewes and keep the progeny while the market is good, Mr Reimers said. If we want to maintain or increase that, we can keep the older ewes. 34 LINDSAY EMBRACES INDUSTRY OPPORTUNITIES 2018 Lambex Young Gun Finalist At just 17, Lindsay Brown has a level of maturity and industry awareness that belies his age. Yanco Agricultural High School boys school captain Lindsay has been selected as one of three finalists in the high school category of the nationwide LambEx Young Guns competition for Growing up on Islay, his family's 930-hectare property at Beckom, NSW, sheep have always been a passion. Dad is pretty focused on sheep. We do a lot of cereals as well but the focus is on prime lamb and wool production, he said. Immersed in agriculture from a young age, Lindsay s desire to see improvements in the sheep and wool industry is infectious. I would like to see myself as a leading producer of sheep and wool. I want to achieve a long-term career that contributes to the industry. I want to make my contribution. I want to be an industry leader in terms of production and be able to assist others in marketing their own wool and stock. Part of the entry requirements for this year's LambEx Young Guns competition required participants to identify opportunities for positive change in the industry. The key opportunity I identify in the lamb industry is simply the use of technology," he said. "The consumer base is more educated. They desire a paddock to plate story. With the introduction of EID electronic tags, there is more traceability and transparency. It is also a help from a management point of view. You can manage individual animals rather than a whole mob." our industry going." Lindsay is key member of the Yanco show and sale team and has placed in Merino, Poll Dorset and White Suffolk judging. I have been pretty heavily involved with the show side of things for the past six years at Yanco. "I was also very involved in the running of Yanco s first White Suffolk Sale as well as sire selection throughout the years, and I have been able to go to the Sydney Royal for the state final of Merino judging. "As a school stud we have had plenty of individual sheep that have gone really well. A few years ago in Melbourne we had the reserve champion interbreed ewe. Being a school stud we are a little outclassed by some of the other big studs but we hold our own pretty well." Lindsay has been heavily involved with the White Suffolk breed, purchasing rams from the Yanco stud sale to run with his own flock on his home block in Beckom. He sells his prime lambs as suckers through the Griffith Sale Yards. They are a faster maturing sire which suits me in turning them off quicker," he said. "They are purpose bred for meat production so you get a good meaty carcase. I have a focus on increasing meat-eating quality as well, which suits the White Suffolks." Lindsay is also passionate about seeing more young people engaging with the industry. Yanco has helped foster the desire to enter the industry and do well, he said. "Teachers have given me the opportunities to follow my goals in the sheep and wool industry. In my year group at school there are a lot of students very excited about the industry. "There needs to be a big calling for young people to join the industry. "The average age of farmers today is 56. They need young people to keep our industries alive and to bring that passion. 36 SUPERWHITES Young Sire & Genetic Improvement Group Working together, with a common breeding objective, a desire to improve the rate of genetic gain in member flocks, a willingness to test highly ranked young rams and improve linkage between flocks. These are the core of the aims of the SUPERWHITES group within the Australian White Suffolk Association. The SUPERWHITES group is a renamed version of the AWSA Flock Improvement Program which was established in the mid nineteen nineties. The group currently has 19 members, Ella Matta, Langley Heights, Illoura, Woolumbool, Leith, Ida Vale, Felix, Ashmore, Glengarry, Farrer, Koonawarra, Gemini, Bundara Downs, Waratah, Pendarra, Trigger Vale, Yanco, Kohat and Yonga Downs. Collectively these flocks join over 9000 White Suffolk ewes and sell around 15% of the White Suffolk rams sold in Australia. Each year the group selects a team of young rams from those nominated by members. These rams are allocated independently across the group, together with a proven link sire, providing great genetic linkage and a commensurate increase in ASBV accuracy. This increase in the accuracy of selection, together with a lower male generation interval, has led to an improved rate of genetic gain across the SUPERWHITES group, providing its commercial ram clients with distinctly high-performance rams. With the advent of eating quality ASBVs and the introduction of the LEQ index, the group's selection focus has shifted slightly over recent years to include this information. Despite this slight change in emphasis, the group has maintained its gains in the traditional growth and carcase traits as shown by the Carcase Plus figure, whilst arresting the increase in Shear Force and the decline in Intra Muscular Fat, two traits which have a major effect on eating quality. SUPERWHITES has always been at the forefront of the breed in participating in industry research. Group members have led the breed, and probably industry, in involvement in the Sheep CRC/MLA Information Nucleus and Resource flocks, to the extent that 55% of the White Suffolk sires used in those programs emanate from member flocks. In addition, the SUPERWHITES group is also participating in a Producer Initiated Fast Track project with support from MLA. To this end the group has carried out 2137 genomic tests and collected phenotypic information on 287 lambs from 55 sires. All were 2017 drop lambs. These sires represent 18 different flocks, not all of them SUPERWHITES members. There have been three trial kills at JBS Bordertown, TFI Tamworth and Frewstal Stawell. When the phenotypic information is available it will be incorporated into the Sheep Genetics analysis. Effectively this project has established a White Suffolk reference flock based around the SUPERWHITES group. This project, together with continued involvement in industry wide research, will allow all White Suffolk breeders 36 Australian White Suffolk Association

40 2018 A YEAR TO VOTE IN WOOLPOLL The next time you get a phone call or an from your wool broker telling you your wool prices, you will have one of three reactions; you will be either happy, accepting, or disappointed. At the moment, if you are producing wool finer than 27 micron, you are in the first category, and contemplating buying a new ute. If you are producing 27 to 30 micron wool, you are probably still reasonably happy but aren t about to go and put an offer on the neighbouring block. But if your wool clip is over 30 micron, you are probably wondering why you are getting the same prices as you were 10 years ago. Australia is one of few countries where woolgrowers contribute to the management of their industry by investing in Research and Development and Marketing. Currently, Australian woolgrowers contribute 2% of their wool income to a fund used to promote our fibre in the world's markets, to research alternative uses and processing methods for wool, and to finance research and development from the dirt to the dockyard. This fund is administered by a company, owned by Australian shareholder woolgrowers, called Australian Wool Innovation or AWI. In the last full financial year (2016/17), the wool levy paid by growers amounted to $60.2m. In addition to this, the Federal Government put in $14.7m, licensees from the Woolmark Company contribute $9.4m and there is nearly $4m of interest and other income. The Woolmark Company was purchased by AWI in 2007 to help establish a marketing framework prior to that AWI was solely involved in R & D. AWI splits this fund, with 60% allocated to marketing and 40% to R&D, with a total expenditure of over $70m. What we get paid for our wool comes down to a simple equation of supply and demand, and the current market reflects this. Supply in Australia has been relatively constant over the last ten years, and we produce about 90% of the world's fine apparel wool, which makes up just over 80% of our woolclip. In that ten year period demand for apparel wool has risen, and so has the price, especially in recent times. On the side of the broader wools, especially over 30 micron, there is significant production in Europe and New Zealand. Wool of this description is often used in Interiors, and the market for that has not balanced supply is a year that gives woolgrowers an opportunity to vote in what is known as WoolPoll. Under Federal legislation, every three years woolgrowers get to choose which levy rate they pay to go towards their R&D and Marketing. Currently at 2%, eligible woolgrowers get to choose from up to five options for their new levy rate, which will begin in July An eligible wool grower is one who has paid over $100 in levies in total over the last three years, which equates to a total three year wool income of $5000. In September, eligible woolgrowers will receive their WoolPoll 2018 Voter Information Kit, and they will have until November 2nd to reply either online or by fax or post. When you receive this Kit, discuss it with other members of your family or business and send in your response. Please take this opportunity to have a say in your industry. 47 BE CIRCUMSPECT REGARDING OVINE BRUCELLOSIS Article Courtesy of Stephen Burns, The Land 7 July 2018 Ovine brucellosis has no cure, but it is preventable. That was the message Dr Emily Stearman wished to impart during the 2018 Graham Centre Livestock Forum held in Wagga Wagga. The Riverina Local Land Services (LLS) district veterinarian has been working in animal health and biosecurity since she joined the LLS in 2015 having graduated from Charles Sturt University in 2010 among the first intake of veterinary science students. The cost of Ovine brucellosis to a sheep business can be enormous, but it is preventable with sound bio-security and regular monitoring, according to Dr Stearman. There are a lot of different aspects to this disease, and during her address she focused upon how that cost can be prevented going forward. It is spread from ram to ram through sexual activity, although the ewe can be infected but she will typically be clear after one heat cycle, she said. The rate at which it can spread depends on a variety of conditions, but the key factors include the size of the ram flock, the age structure and the breed. Dr Stearman said the disease tends to spread a bit quicker through the meat breeds, as they tend to be more sexually active away from the ewes: and the smaller the flock, typically the easier it is to infect the sheep. In many cases the disease can be eradicated from the flock by following a specific testing protocol, and culling those rams tested positive, she said. Dr Stearman advised sheep producers, routine monitoring and awareness of following sound biosecurity principles will protect their flocks against an economically significant disease. Poor semen quality and reduced ejaculate volumes which will obviously reduce the pregnancy-scanning percentages, she said. No one knows they have got the disease, but testical palpation is a good place to start, and blood testing is onehundred-percent accurate. The options of control vary, but Dr Stearman recommends identifying those rams which are infected, and because the disease is not treatable the only way of eliminating it is to cull any animal which is infected. It is not just one test and you are clear, Dr Stearman reminded producers. It is a matter of continual testing until everything is clear. Obviously prevention is better, and there are ways in which the introduction of Ovine brucellosis to a flock can be restricted. Rams should always be purchased from Brucellosis accredited studs, effective boundary fences properly maintained and critically, rams are kept in an internal paddock, preferably close to the properties work centre where they can be regularly monitored. Especially if a stray ram should enter the property. Australian White Suffolk Association 47

52 New national saleyards lamb record set at Wagga Wagga Courtesy of Cara Jeffery of NSW Country Hour, ABC 28 June 2018 Heavy lambs have sold for a record-breaking $ a head at Wagga Wagga saleyards in southern New South Wales. The draft of 168 second cross White Suffolk and Poll Dorset lambs were sold by Doug Constance, who farms at Berridale on the Monaro and Humula in the Riverina. The 11-month-old lambs were packing plenty of weight and livestock agent Isaac Hill, who sold the lambs at auction to a processor from Goulburn, estimated they would have a dressed carcase weight of about 41 kilograms. They were also estimated to have a $10 skin value. A record-breaking run The lambs eclipsed the previous record of $260 set at Forbes saleyards, just two days prior to the Wagga sale. Mr Constance was not at the yards to see his lambs sold but he was shocked when Mr Hill called to inform him he now held the record for selling the most expensive lambs in the country. "I was just stunned and surprised by the call, I thought they might have made $260 a head," Mr Constance said. "We weren't aiming for the record, but they sold very well, and they were entitled to as they were monsters," Mr Hill said. He said reduced supply of heavy lambs led to strong competition for Mr Constance's lambs. "There is a shortage of big lambs as grain is too expensive and a lot of farmers can't feed to the extent this mob were," Mr Hill said. Getting lambs to such a heavy weight came at an extra cost for Mr Constance as they were fed a high protein ration of lupins. "It was pretty tough for a while when the price of grain was high, and lambs weren't selling as well due to the drought conditions," Mr Constance said. "So it's good to see we are now getting rewarded for the money and the effort we put into keeping these lambs." It's been a rewarding month at the market for Mr Constance, who sold lambs for $240 a head just three week ago. "I've had some pretty good wins lately," he said. Big numbers, big prices There were 32,000 lambs sold at the Wagga Wagga sale 12,000 head more than the week prior. Mr Hill said news that major processor Fletchers International would be shutting down for a two-week maintenance period, coupled with the strong lamb market had farmers keen to get their lambs to yards for the sale. "Numbers will drop away now as lambs clear off the place and people make room for the next generation of lambs," he said. Mr Constance said he would not like to see lambs at the saleyards get too much more expensive. "I don't think it will go much higher, it's pretty much at a sustainable level now," he said. "I would rather it stay at this level than get too dear and crash." And he's not too confident he'll hold the record for long. "I might have the bragging rights for now, but I'll probably get rolled somewhere next week," Mr Constance said. 52 Australian White Suffolk Association

All will fly to Perth to attend a Professional Development Workshop and LambEx 2018 on August 5-7, with the three category winners, who will each receive a $1000 prize, to be announced during the conference. The LambEx 2018 Young Guns Competition is held thanks to sponsors the Australian White Suffolk Association and the National Australia Bank. The competition aims to reward and encourage young and upcoming producers, industry professionals and scientists to consider a future or ongoing career in the Australian lamb industry. LambEx 2018 Chair Bindi Murray said she was excited by the strong field of entries and the nine finalists who had been selected. NAB Agribusiness throws its support behind this event because we strongly believe in the importance of providing opportunities for young leaders, he said. We have great confidence in the future of the sheep and lamb industry with the calibre of young people that the LambEx Young Guns Competition continues to attract. Australian White Suffolk Association Board Member Andrew Heinrich said the Young Guns concept was a great opportunity for youth, and his association was very proud to be a competition sponsor. It provides a wonderful example to help young people from within the industry to grow and develop more confidence and experience, as well as improve their networking skills, he said. This is the third time that the competition has run, and the third time that the association has been involved in sponsoring it. It has been really wonderful to be involved in the process and see the growth of previous finalists. The competition stepped up another level last year with some of the strongest applicants yet and the 2018 competition has hosted another strong field of applicants. The Australian White Suffolk Association really look forward to seeing the nine finalists and the three winners at LambEx For more information and profiles on the 2018 Young Guns finalists visit It s important to help support and provide opportunities for young people in agriculture, she said. We need to ensure more young people become involved in the sheep and lamb industry to build on the current buoyancy and help secure its ongoing success. NAB Head of Agribusiness SA & WA, Matt O Dea said it was important to celebrate emerging leaders in the agriculture industry and give them the opportunity to provide input into the direction of their industry. 56 Australian White Suffolk Association
