INTRODUCTION Stomtopods or mntis shrimps re inhitnts of littorl regions where they live in ottom revies or urrows. They re osionily ught in fish nets nd re lnded with the trsh t fish hrours. A preliminry study ws Undertken y Tirmizi nd Bshir (1975) when individuls of mntis shrimps nd peneid shrimps of the sme size were studied nd oserved tht the edile met in the two ws of the sme weight. T.he speies omposition in the northern Arin Se shows diversifition. The erliest reords of Stomtopod in the northern Arin Se re in Wood-Mson (1895) of Squill supplex from Bomy. Out of the 37 speies reported from the Arin Se out 28 speies re known from long the Indin suontinent (Mnning, 1988). Big (1954) for the first time fter prtition from Krhi, Pkistn reord~d 3 speies nd then Tirmizi nd Mnning (1968) from Pkistn in monogrphi work reportedl7 speies nd lter on Tirinizi nd Kzmi (198i) keyed out 19 speies. Ahmed et!. (1972) pulished list for mrine fun of Pkistn. This list inludes 8 speies of stointopods. Llyod (1908) mentions of Squill speies from southwest ost of Ari olleted y RIMSS Investigtor in 1907 nd himself reported 6 speies from Bomy nd Krhi~ Of these, the reord of Squill ov to ri (misspelled for rtori) is onsidered here to e mistkenly given from Bomy y Lloyd sine S. rtori ertinly does not our south or west of Vietnm (RBM). Chopr (193 9) fro. n South Arin ost reported Lysiosquill sewelli,.gonodtylus demni vr. espinosus, G. demni vr.? espinosus, Eurysquill sewelli nd from Kuri Muri Islnd Pseudosquill ilit. The gonodtylid lot tully ontined G. hopri Mnning, 1967 rid G. inipiens Lnhester, 1903 (Mnning, 1990). From

Duris (1987) reported Ehinosquill guerinii from the western Indin Oen (Sootr Islnd). Ghosh (1990) mentioned 13 speies from Lkshdweep, only 4 of these fll in the re studied. All these speies re now inluded in the present key. In the key, tx ouring in the Pkistn wters re preeded y n sterisk(*). For nomenlturl hnges Mnning's works re generlly followed.
