3 Stevens County 4-H Premium List ~ H programs across Minnesota use the online fair registration system called FairEntry. Fair registration will be done online at There are detailed, step-by-step guides and videos available at youth/mn4-h/county-fair/fairentry/index.html to help you get your projects entered online. GETTING STARTED FairEntry works best in Chrome, Safari or Firefox. It does not work in Internet Explorer. Go to In order to register for 4-H at your county fair, you must use your 4HOnline family login ( address and password). REGISTERING FOR THE STEVENS COUNTY FAIR When you log in, you will see a welcome screen follow the prompts to: 1. Register (create) an exhibitor. 2. Add entries to that exhibitor. 3. Repeat for additional exhibitors and/or entries. 4. Resolve any registration issues (look for the blue notices). 5. Do NOT click on Continue to Payment and/or Submit the Invoice until you have entered all the projects for your entire family. 6. When completed with exhibitors and entries, click Continue to Payment and submit the Invoice. (There are no fees or payments needed, but this step is required to complete your registration.) 7. Extension staff will approve your invoice as soon as possible. Until that time, you will not be allowed to enter any additional information. LOGGING BACK IN ANOTHER TIME When logging back in, you will find your family profile in one of three situations : Invoice un-submitted - You can continue adding or completing entries on that invoice. Invoice submitted, but not approved - New entries are not allowed, but you can review previous entries until your invoice is approved. Invoice submitted and approved - You can add entries by starting a new invoice. NAVIGATION HINTS Click on the fair Title to return to your family Dashboard at any time. When working on an invoice, you can often click on any of the navigation buttons even if they are not green. Need internet access? A computer station will be available at the Extension Office for your use in FairEntry. Please call ahead to reserve a time.

4 4 General Rules & Regulations 1. Members may exhibit in the projects and units in which they have enrolled and will complete records. 2. Pre-registration will be done online by each family. You will need to log in to using your family s 4HOnline username and password to register your projects for the county fair. It is the member s responsibility to register what they will be bringing to the fair by July 10. Failure to pre-register by the deadline results in ineligibility for champion, reserve champion or State Fair trips, and ineligibility to participate in livestock auction. 3. All exhibits must arrive during specified entry times and remain on display at the county fair until Sunday 7 p.m. for livestock and 8 p.m. for all other. Premium money will be withheld from all projects if the 4-Her doesn t comply. 4. The Stevens County 4-H Leaders Council and Extension Office will not assume responsibility for objects that are lost, stolen or broken. 5. Display For all project areas where a tri-fold display may be exhibited, the size may not be larger than 12 deep, 24 wide, 36 high. Poster displays may not exceed 22 wide x 28 high. They may be smaller. To improve quality of displays, members are encouraged to design a visual display which provides for a tri-fold exhibit. Displays aren t required in all classes. 6. Conference judging results are based on: 50% exhibit quality and educational value 50% 4-Hers ability to explain and knowledge of project 7. Age Divisions Youth must have completed the grade level they will be exhibiting in. Cloverbuds are 4-Hers in grades K-2. 4-Hers are grouped in the following way: Cloverbuds Grades K-2 Beginner Grades 3-5 Intermediate Grades 6-8 Advanced Grades 9 to 1 year post-high school 8. Exhibits can only be exhibited once in their lifetime. 9. Process for 4-H Grievances: A grievance may be filed and a local volunteer grievance committee convened to address rule violations and alleged wrongdoing. A grievance committee will not be convened for decisions made by judges, missed deadlines or code of conduct violations which will be addressed by staff according to an established process. For more information on the grievance process go to To file a grievance you must contact the 4-H Program Coordinator within 24 hours of the incident. 10. Copyright Law and Infringement: a. Copyright is a form of protection given to authors and creators of original work. Original work includes a person s ideas captured in writing or as an image, photograph, song, audio recording, or visual recording. b. All original work - including information found on the web - is subject to copyright protection. The author/creator has exclusive rights to reproduce, distribute, display, perform, or make derivative works. Stevens County 4-H Premium List ~ 2018 c. Before using another person s work as part of your 4-H exhibit, be sure that the work is subject to fair use, has a creative commons license or that you have requested and received permission (in writing) to use the original work. If an exhibit infringes on copyright law, a decision may need to be made to remove the exhibit from display at the county or state fair. State Fair Eligibility 1. The asterisk (*) next to certain classes denote that they are State Fair eligible classes. 2. A 4-H member selected for a trip to the State Fair must have completed the 6th grade. 3. Qualified 4-H members may participate in State Fair activities in the following ways: a. On individual project activity - example: exhibit, public presentation, fashion revue, small engine contest, Community Pride, etc. b. All other areas of participation such as Share the Fun, Learn By Doing Center, Demonstrations, Arts-In, Issue Display, and Judging Teams are open ended. A 4-Her may participate in as many of these as he/she wishes. 4. Not all project areas have State Fair trips, and not all classes or county exhibits are acceptable at the State Fair. A purple ribbon doesn t mean an automatic trip. 5. No project will be exhibited at the State Fair unless the member can be present for the judging at the State Fair. 6. The Stevens County 4-H Leaders Council and County Extension Office will not assume responsibility for articles lost, stolen or broken at the State Fair or damaged in transit to or from the State Fair. 7. All youth planning to exhibit livestock at the Minnesota State Fair must have a current certification of Livestock Quality Assurance and Ethics prior to the start of our county fair. Livestock Rules Pre-Fair Reminder! IDs that are not received by May 15 are eligible for blue, red and white ribbons only. You are ineligible for premium, champion, reserve champion, State Fair trip, and the auction. 1. Livestock is to be shown by the 4-H member exhibiting that animal except in the case of one exhibitor having two animals in the same class or State Fair line-up class. One animal can then be shown by another active Stevens County 4-H member. Livestock exhibitors unable to show due to emergency situations should inform Extension staff as situation arises. A decision on whether or not another 4-Her can show their animal will be evaluated on a case by case basis. 2. Livestock must be owned and identified according to MN 4-H animal science show requirements, which can be viewed at docs/id-requirements-table.pdf H livestock exhibitors are responsible for the following: a. fitting and showing All grooming of livestock, including clipping, trimming and blocking (all species) must be

5 Stevens County 4-H Premium List ~ clearly done by the exhibitor, members of the immediate family or any other registered MN 4-H member. Immediate family members are defined as being parents, step parents, legal guardians, grandparents, brothers or sisters. The 4-Her exhibiting the animal should be present and involved in the fitting process at the fair. b. care and feeding c. cleaning stall and pens d. providing equipment for feeding and cleaning e. provide own feed, hay and bedding 4. State Fair 4-H grooming guidelines apply. They can be found on the specie updates webpage located at H livestock health requirements are the same as open class and are as stipulated by the MN Board of Animal Health and the County Agricultural Society. 6. The Stevens County 4-H livestock program and 4-H exhibitors or livestock will abide by the IAFE (International Association of Fairs and Expositions) National Code of Show Ring Ethics. To obtain a copy of the National Code of Ethics contact the Extension Office. 7. Livestock must stay on grounds until 7 p.m. on Sunday, unless being marketed through designated means. All stalls must be cleaned by the end of Post-Fair Clean Up Monday evening, August 13. Per Fair Board policy premium money will be withheld from all projects if the 4-Her doesn t comply. Livestock Health Requirements All livestock will be inspected by the official veterinarian on the opening day of the exhibition and daily during the exhibition. The official veterinarian will order the immediate removal to a quarantine facility or removal from the exhibition premises of any livestock with symptoms of infectious or communicable diseases. Animals placed in a quarantine facility must remain there until removed from the exhibition premises. They may not enter a show ring. This includes livestock with warts and ringworm. Therefore, livestock affected by these diseases cannot be exhibited. A statement from a veterinarian that an animal is being treated for these diseases is not acceptable. Poultry: All poultry, except waterfowl and pigeons, must be identified by leg or wing band, which will be provided at check-in, and have a negative pollorum-typhoid test within 90 days, or have record of origin from a flock tested negative within last 12 months. Turkeys need to be tested negative for, or originated directly from parent stock that is tested negative for, mycoplasma gallisepticum and mycoplasma synoviae. Swine: Swine must be officially identified. The 4-H tag serves as an official form of ID. Cattle: Cattle must be officially identified. Please see requirements at Sheep and Goats: All sheep and goats, including wethers, must be identified with official identification approved for use in scrapie eradication program. Horses: A negative Coggins test result within the past 12 months will be required for all horses attending a Stevens County 4-H activity of any kind. A test is not required for suckling foals accompanying a negative dam. Dogs & Cats: Dogs and cats over 4 months of age must be accompanied by a current Certificate of Rabies Vaccination issued by a licensed veterinarian. MN 4-H requires dogs be vaccinated yearly for distemper, hepatitis, leptosirios, parainfluenza and parvovirus (DHLPP). Premium Schedule Project Area Blue Red White Part. Banner must be 3x5 and designed to hang vertically. 2. It must be completed and equipped with a dowel (minimum size 3 8 ) and ready to hang. 3. Banner must be fabric (no paper) and can be one or two-sided. 4. Club name on 3x5 card pinned to back. (Any assembly technique can be used.) Last year s banners may be brought in for display, but will not be judged and are not eligible for premiums. { COMMUNITY PRIDE *Community Pride, Club One exhibit will be selected for State Fair. 1. The exhibit may include a tri-fold display, video or other visual method which usually highlights the entire project or certain parts in a manner which tells the public what positive effects the project had on the community. 2. Youth from club who participated in the project may represent the club in conference judging.

6 6 { CLUB PROJECT 1. The exhibit may include a tri-fold display, video or other visual method. 2. Exhibit will show and explain the club s activities around the project, project learning opportunities and participation in the club project. { CLUB REPORTER Reporter s scrapbook of 4-H club s current year activities 1. Show and explain your club s activities and participation in community and county events for the current year. { CLUB SECRETARY Secretary s record of 4-H club s current year activities { CLUB PROMOTION PROJECT This year s promotion project will be a barn quilt of the Stevens County barn quilt tour. Each club may exhibit up to 2 barn quilts. Barn quilts must be waterproof. Display needs to be able to be outside. Place your display anywhere appropriate on the fairgrounds prior to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, August 7. This will be judged by the display only (no interview). ANIMAL SCIENCE PROJECTS ATTENTION! Please make sure to read the livestock rules and health rules on pages 4 and 5 for all species of livestock you will be exhibiting at the fair! ROUND ROBIN SHOWMANSHIP Champion and reserve champion showmen in each age division of Beef, Sheep, Swine, Dairy, Goat, Horse, Poultry, Lama, and Rabbit will be eligible to participate in this event. Please register with Kirstin Koch by 6 p.m. on Friday, August 10. { LIVESTOCK INTERVIEWS - Make sure you sign up! Completed Grade Beg. Interview 3-4 Jr. Interview 5-6 Int. Interview 7-8 Sr. Interview 9-10 Adv. Interview 11 & up You only need to sign up once. One interview covers all livestock species 4-Her will be exhibiting. Livestock Interviews will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Monday, August 6! New Advanced Interviews will begin at 4:45 p.m. Stevens County 4-H Premium List ~ 2018 { SCIENCE OF ANIMALS EDUCATIONAL EXHIBITS - 4 entries max. Judged at General Entry Day BREEDING HEALTH PRODUCTION ZOONOTICS OTHER NEW 1. Items constructed (such as feeding systems or show equipment) or science exhibits focusing on one of the five divisions listed above. 2. These projects may be enhanced with 3-dimensional displays, posters or notebooks. State Fair trips will be available. Exhibits will be judged during Livestock Weekend and 4-Hers may exhibit both an animal and a Science of Animal educational exhibit. This project is modeled after the 2015 Poultry exhibits that resulted from the Avian Flu outbreak when birds were not allowed to be exhibited. Be creative! { BEEF Specie Supervisors: Jon & Lori Moser, Matt & Adrienne Hilbrands Again this year, tie outs will be available for beef animals. All animals must have a halter and necktie to be in the tie out area. The 4-H Beef Show will be a Fit Show. LIVESTOCK INTERVIEW See page 6 for details. Calf may be part of a cow/calf pair. 2. Dairy Steer Calf can either be a purebred or a crossbreed of the following: Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, Guernsey, Holstein, Jersey or Milking Shorthorn (without the S suffix on their registration). 3. Dairy Beef Steer Calf can be any percentage cross of beef and dairy breed. MARKET BEEF A member may show a total of 3 market beef. *Market Steer *Market Heifer *Slick Shorn Market Beef 1. Recommended minimum weight for State Fair is 1,000 pounds; recommended maximum weight is 1,500 pounds. Market animals exceeding the maximum weight will not be purple ribbon eligible for State Fair. 2. Market beef will be weighed prior to judging. Classes will be divided according to weight. 3. Slick shorn beef must be sheared to 1/4 on any location except the tail switch (the tail switch may not exceed 12 ). They must be shorn prior to livestock check in. DAIRY STEER *Dairy Steer, 2 entries max. 1. The following pure breed dairy breeds (100% of one breed) will be accepted in the dairy steer show without registration papers: Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, Guernsey, Holstein, Jersey, and Milking Shorthorn (without the S suffix on their registration). 2. Crossbred dairy steers will be eligible for State Fair and must be from the following breeds in any combination: Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, Guernsey, Holstein, Milking Shorthorn, Jersey, Montbeliarde, Normande, Red & White Holsteins, Norwegian Red, and Viking Red (Swedish, Danish & Finnish Red). 3. Recommended minimum weight for State Fair is 1,000 pounds; maximum weight is 1,600 pounds. Market animals exceeding the maximum weight will not be purple ribbon eligible for State Fair. 4. Dairy steers showing permanent teeth may be shown, but they are not eligible for State Fair. { CAT - 2 entries max. CAT DISPLAY COMPANION ANIMAL SHOW - Cat, 2 entries max. (This class includes judging and the show.) Cat displays will be judged at General Entry Day. Companion Animal entries will be judged on Tuesday, August 7, from 5:30-6:45 p.m., with the Show at 7:30 p.m. 1. A cat may be entered in the cat show or the pet show, not both. 2. All cats must have current rabies vaccination certificate. 3. Be prepared to answer questions about your cat and its care. 1. Educational exhibits may include models, diagrams or pictures, and should show or explain something the 4-Her has made, done or learned. See 4-H display guidelines under General Rules & Regulations. 8 8 1. Senior yearlings that have calved must compete in the two year old cow class. 2. Advanced cows may be shown without a complete 305-day butterfat record, but are not eligible for State Fair. 3. A 2-year old or older animal can be exhibited only if it was identified (not shown) prior to its first freshening. BABY DAIRY - 4-Her should not have completed 6th grade Baby dairy (any breed) born after Jan. 1 of current year. DAIRY MERIT & PRODUCTION - 1 entry per head Dairy Merit Notes: 1. Net merit forms will need to be turned in in order to compete in the Net Merit Contest. Bring records to Brad Heins on Thursday morning of the fair. Dairy Production Notes: 1. Exhibitors may enter any two year old or older animal that has completed a 305-day lactation record; currently enrolled in central processed DHIA test. Bring records to Brad Heins on Thursday morning of the fair. The ribbon awards will be based on the value of the product of the last completed lactation based on 305-days M.E. { DOG Swift County will be hosting a Regional Dog Show at the Swift County Fairgrounds on Saturday, August 11. Classes will be split into two arenas with separate judges similar to the State Dog Show. Guidelines: 1. All dogs entered must have completed an 8-week dog training course with 4-H member. 2. All dogs entered in agility must have completed obedience training and a minimum of 6 agility training sessions with 4-H member; and must be at least 12 month old (18 months for larger breeds). 3. All dogs must be 16 weeks of age prior to starting the obedience training course and must be 6 months of age at the time of the Dog Show to be eligible to show. 1. A dog may be shown in the Dog Show or the Companion Animal Show, not both! 2. 4-Hers 3rd grade and older are eligible for county and state dog shows Her may show a maximum of 2 dogs; entering only 1 dog per class for obedience Hers shall exhibit in the class corresponding to the level of training they and their dog have received. Additional information, class requirements, and rules/regulations can be found in the MN 4-H Agility, Obedience, Rally and Showmanship rules and guidelines (four separate publications) available on the MN 4-H dog project website H.umn.edu/projects/animal-science/dog/. Stevens County 4-H Premium List ~ All dogs must be vaccinated according to the requirements listed on the MN 4-H Dog Project ID Form and Vaccination Verification. There will be a 4-H Fun Horse Show on Sunday, August 12, at 10 a.m. in the Horse Arena. More information will be sent as the fair nears. Put it on your calendar now, and don t miss the FUN! General Show Rules Riders need to abide by the following rules as part of the Stevens County 4-H Horse Show regulations: 1. Show will follow state Horse Show General Rules found in the MN 4-H Horse Project Rulebook at Cloverbuds are allowed to participate in arena practice sessions and the Showmanship and Lead Line classes at the County 4-H Horse Show. Animals must be led and controlled by a parent, volunteer or youth leader; NO EXCEPTIONS! 3. Riders in grades 3-12 cannot share a horse with another rider in the same class, with the exception of Cloverbuds. 4. Each rider may only register in each event once. 5. Riders are responsible for their own horses. Only 4-Hers are allowed to ride the horse at the 4-H Horse Show, at the fair, or at any 4-H sponsored event. 6. Suitable, neat attire as stated in the show rules is required and must be worn in all classes and events. All 4-Hers participating in any 4-H sponsored mounted activity are required to wear properly fastened ASTM/SEI approved protective headgear. Helmet use is required when mounted. This policy also extends to 4-H volunteers when

10 10 they are working with youth in a 4-H volunteer role during mounted activities. Helmets are required for all mounted classes. a. Western Clothing: Western boots, western helmet, dress or western long-sleeved shirt; western pants or jeans; belt; vest, jacket, or sweater is optional, as are chaps. b. Hunt Seat: Clothing must be clean, neat and appropriate for hunter classes. Riders must wear coats, boots, breeches, and hunting caps. The coat can be of any tweed suitable for hunting with matching neutral color breeches. High English boots and hunting caps are a necessity. Bats and gloves are optional, gloves for equation are recommended. c. All members must have two numbers on in all riding classes or will receive an automatic white placing. 7. Good sportsmanship must be exhibited at all times by both riders and parents. Cruel or rough handling of horses will not be allowed at any show/event. A horse and exhibitor may be excused from the ring, show or event for lack of control, cruelty, rough handling, or unsportsman-like conduct. 8. The judge, Extension staff or the Specie Supervisor have the authority and will dismiss from the ring for that class any animal that is unruly or not in sufficient control for the safety of the handler or other exhibitors. 9. Use of drugs as a tranquilizer or stimulant is prohibited. The Stevens County Extension Office, Specie Supervisor, in cooperation with the Stevens County Fair Board Veterinarian, reserve the right to collect and analyze blood and urine samples to assure compliance with this ruling. Failure to comply will result in disqualification. Consequences of positive drug test results are: disqualification, forfeiture of State Horse Show trips and forfeiture of premiums. Classes An exhibitor may show in each class once, but will be paid premiums on a maximum of their top two placings per horse, plus showmanship. Classes will be divided as follows: Junior Intermediate Senior Grades 3-5 (showmanship only) Grades 6 & up Grades & Up for showmanship Scoring Points will only be calculated from blue ribbon placings and only the top six placings in a class will receive points. 1. Points are awarded as follows: 1 st - 6 points 2 nd - 5 points 3 rd - 4 points 4 th - 3 points 5 th - 2 points 6 th - 1 point 2. Points will be used to determine games, pleasure and overall high point awards and trips as follows. 3. Awards and points are not official until verified by the Extension Office within 2 business days of the end of the show. 8. System for sending exhibitors to State Horse Show: a. If there is an even number of trips, trips will be split evenly between games and pleasure. b. If there is an odd number of trips, trips will be split evenly between games and pleasure and the remainder of trips will be designated as high point overall tips. c. For Grand Entry Rider the oldest participant has first choice; if they have previously participated, then it goes to the next person, and so on. Rules for the Horse Barn 1. Hay bags are preferred for hay (no feeding on the ground); wood shavings must be used for bedding. 2. No horses may be ridden out the front of the building, please use the side door facing the outdoor arena. 3. Do not leave your horse unattended in the arena for exercise; please respect others needs and kindly take turns for exercise time. 4-H horse project members are the only ones who should be riding their own horses. A helmet and saddle must be worn at all times while riding. No riding in barn! 4. No horseback riding is allowed during any grandstand events. 5. Could include their life cycle, prevention or treatment, their impact on the plant, etc. 2. A weed display or book identifying different weeds in agriculture or horticulture. Highlight one weed in depth, a class of weeds (such as grasses or broad leaves) or a collection of different weeds. Could include identification details, life cycle, weed control, the impact on crop production, etc. *Note: Do not include live or dried noxious weed samples in your display (check current listing at noxiouslist.aspx). If you are bringing in a sample of weed seeds, put it in a sealed container. { BICYCLE - 4 entries max. 1. Display showing types of bikes, parts of a bike, maintenance, traffic rules, bicycling hazards, how to wear a helmet, equipment used to teach others about bike repair or first aid, etc. 2. Notebook or picture story of a bike rodeo or other bike event you helped with, or research on some other aspect of bicycling that was presented to a class or service club. { CHILD & FAMILY DEVELOPMENT - 4 entries max. 1. Exhibitors should be prepared to discuss, in conference judging, the age and other characteristics of the child for whom the exhibit is intended and how the exhibit contributes to the child's growth, development, and well-being. 2. If the exhibit is designed to be interactive with children, the item is to be used with children before exhibiting and a photograph of this activity must accompany the exhibit. Signs of use will not detract from the placing of the exhibit. 1. Toy, game, puzzle, puppets, art/craft materials, etc., made from new or recycled/throw-away material. 2. Babysitting kit/travel kit/rainy day kit, including at least one item made by exhibitor. 3. Original book, story, poem, song, play, cookbook, audio or video tape and narrative, activity book, safety manual for children, file about children and/or families. 4. Note: At State Fair, clothing exhibitors can use the same garment to participate in both Fashion Revue and regular clothing in the same year. CLOTHES YOU BUY EXHIBIT - Purchased Garment or Outfit, 4 entries max. 1. The purchased garment or outfit must be accompanied by an 8 1/2x11" binder with, at minimum, the following information: a. Colored photo of member wearing the garment or outfit. Label photo with name, county, and color of complexion, hair and eyes. b. Cost of garment. Explanation of why garment was purchased and examples of ways it will be used in existing wardrobe. c. Additional items that could be included: inventory of wardrobe, price tags, comparison of similar outfit from a different store, cost to construct outfit, mix and match with current clothing items in wardrobe, fabric content and care of fabric. 2. Garments may have been worn before showing, but should be cleaned and pressed before exhibiting. 3. Clothes You Buy items exhibited at county fair need to be brought to General Entry Day in a box. CLOTHES YOU MAKE EXHIBIT - Constructed Garment, 4 entries max. 1. Each garment must include an information tag listing: pattern company name and number, fiber content of fabric and care instructions. 2. FASHION MODELING - 4 entries max. in each Class * For modeling judging you may exhibit 4 outfits for both Clothes You Buy and Clothes You Make, but you will only be allowed to show 2 of each at the public Fashion Revue. Fashion Modeling Purpose: The Fashion Revue program gives 4-Hers the opportunity to: 1. Build self-confidence and poise by developing an understanding of self, which aids in the selecting and making of clothing that is becoming and expressive of one s personality. 2. Develop skills in planning, selecting and making becoming clothing for different occasions and body styles. 3. Simple home or clothing accessory items such as a pillow, apron, locker caddy, bike pack, book bag, belt, placemat, racket cover, sewing kit, etc. Tie pillows and tie blankets are a craft; not a sewing project. Judged at Presentation Day on July Each item must include information listing: pattern book and name, fiber content of fabric and batting, and care instructions. If not hand tied by the 4-Her, state who hand/machine quilted the final project. (Note: Depending on the skill level of 4-Her, someone else may do the final quilting.) 2. Computers may be used in judging, but emphasis is on documentation, screen print and summary. 4-Hers are responsible for providing and securing any hardware used for judging; hardware may not be left on display. 2. Reports and written summaries should be bound in a booklet or placed in a folder. 3. Large expensive items should be accompanied by a display photo, which can remain and be displayed.

See for more information. AQUATIC ROBOTICS - 4 entries max. 1. Design and build their own remote-operated vehicle (ROV). 2. Use and adapt it to monitor water quality/aquatic invasive species (AIS) education. 3. Work in teams of at least 3 youth, or individuals may exhibit. 4. Illustrate the community partnership (e.g. DNR, Water Resource or Lake Association). 1. Display, binder, poster illustrating the process of doing the activity/project. 2. Exhibit of ROV. 3. Display showing their use in aquatic invasive species (AIS) education. 4. Booklet showing their progression in aquatic invasive species (AIS) education as a team. ENGINEERING DESIGN - 4 entries max. 1. Include description of the problem/challenge being solved. 2. Include description of the engineering design process/steps undergone to solve problem. 1. Display, binder, poster illustrating the process of doing the activity/project. 2. Exhibit of engineering design product. 3. Display, binder, poster, webpage exploring a related career. ROBOTICS - 4 entries max. Notes: 1. The goal of the 4-H robotics program is for the 4-H members to explore science, technology and engineering through designing and building a functioning robot. The robot can be either programmable or remote controlled. The robot can be created by an individual or a group. 1. Exhibits must be labeled with name, the county on all pieces of exhibit. Fair staff will not be responsible for lost, stolen or damaged robots or parts. 2. Exhibits may have a one page report explaining the function, purpose and construction of the robot. 3. Include a description of the robots ability to sense, follow a plan and complete an act. 1. A robot, display, diagrams or programming, booklets, etc. Stevens County 4-H Premium List ~ 2018 ENGINEERING DESIGN CHALLENGE LEVEL 1 & 2 (formerly Rube Goldberg) - 4 entries max. *Level 1 - grades 3-8 *Level 2 - grades 9-12 Youth in grades 6 and above can participate in Level 2 if they have at least two years previous experience in Level 1. Each member (regardless of age) needs to register in one of these classes. An Engineering Design Challenge machine is based on Rube Goldberg, an overly complex contraption designed to accomplish a simple task. The best created machines use a variety of everyday items in a whimsical way to create a series of chain-reaction steps to accomplish a simple task. In the contest, youth not only employ physics and engineering, but humor and storytelling, to create their machine. This activity is a team event of at least 3 and no more than 10 members. 1. Please refer to the Engineering Design Challenge Level 1 and 2 Rule Books at for complete details. 2. Teams of at least 3 youth. 3. Minimum of 10 steps. 4. Machine must operate in 2 minutes or less. 5. Exhibit physical size limited to 6 x 6 x Explain on thing/step on the machine that they use science content and skills to help solve a problem/challenge. 7. Need to keep a written record illustrating the process of doing the project. 1. Engineering Design Challenge machine itself. 2. Display, binder, poster illustrating the process of them doing the activity/project. Note: In 2018, the State Engineering Design Challenge for Level 1 and 2 (formerly Rube Goldberg) will be held at a site other than the State Fair. However, challenge teams are invited to showcase their machine and project at the State Fair. Participants can also have other general projects judged. { ENTOMOLOGY - 4 entries max. Insect Collection exhibits: 1. Collections shall be contained in a glass topped case (drawers available for purchase in varying sizes); approximately 19x16 1/2x3 to 24x18x3. Arrange so that the case may be displayed in a horizontal position. Place project label on lower right corner of glass top. 2. Specimens must be collected. Purchased insects are not acceptable. 3. Exhibitors must be the collector of the specimens in the project. 4. Specimens must be properly pinned with insect pins. Small insects may be placed on cardboard points. 5. Specimens must be properly labeled. a. The location, date and collector must be included on the labels. County and state (and country, when applicable) are minimum location information that should be included. It is valuable to include nearest town or township where

19 Stevens County 4-H Premium List ~ the specimen was collected, the type of habitat it was collected from (e.g. on elm tree, on lake shore, indoors), and the common name of the insect. b. All labels should be visible so they can be read. Use permanent ink marker or pencil to write labels. Labels produced by a computer printer are acceptable. Ballpoint ink or non-permanent markers are not acceptable. 6. For more specific information on pinning, labeling and other information, see Collecting and Preserving Insects, a MN 4-H entomology resource, at garden/insects/collecting/. Non-Collection Project exhibits: 1. Emphasis of project must relate to an aspect of entomology. 2. Project must demonstrate specific knowledge of insects. Be prepared to discuss references and sources (e.g. books, magazines, internet, interviews with an expert, etc.). 3. Live projects (e.g. bee or ant colony) will be accepted if the project can be self-sustaining for up to 14 days without special care. 4. A written report or journal should accompany the project, introducing the subject, describing the process (materials and method), predicting an outcome, stating the results, and discussing any conclusions. Pictures, drawings, charts, tables, or other figures may be used. 1. General insect collection: 25 specimens for 3rd-5th graders, 50 or more representing at least 8 orders for 6th graders and up. 2. Specialty insect collection can include but is not limited to a collection of a single order (e.g. Coleoptera or Lepidoptera), a collection of immature insects, a collection of insects from a particular habitat (e.g. aquatic, forest or prairie) or a collection of economic pests of a specific crop (e.g. insects attacking corn). 3. Non-collection project can include but is not limited to life history displays (e.g. insect life cycle), scientific investigation (e.g. insect habitats or effects of environment factors on insects), or insects in current events. { EXPLORING ANIMALS - 4 entries max. 1. This area is for 4-Hers enrolled in Exploring Animals, Exploring Beef, Exploring Dairy, Exploring Goats, Exploring Pets, Exploring Poultry, Exploring Rabbits, Exploring Sheep, or Exploring Swine projects, and who wish to learn more about a given specie. Animal ownership is not required. 1. An educational exhibit to show or explain something 4-Her made, did or learned, or may explore consumer issues, breeds or careers. 2. Exhibits may be tri-fold displays, posters or reports. { EXPLORING THE ENVIRONMENT - 4 entries max. 1. Display on environmental pollution describing the causes, effects on people and other living things, and methods to correct the situation. 2. Display showing features of soils such as color, structure, texture. 3. A display or journal of Minnesota plants, insects, animals, birds or fish. Include pictures or drawings and information on habits, foods, and shelter needs. 4. Display showing erosion control practices such as minimum tillage, terraces, contour strips, grassed waterways, field windbreaks, water control structures, etc. { FISHING SPORTS - 4 entries max. 1. Fish identification. Describe the habitat and food needs of selected Minnesota fish; develop a panel display explaining the life history of a fish; create a model or exhibit identifying the parts of a fish. 2. Fishing knots. Identify how and where each knot is used. Fishing equipment which is made or repaired such as lures, fishing rods and reels, ice fishing rig, or other fishing equipment. 3. Safety practices and techniques that are related to fishing or boating. 4. Examples of how water quality affects the fish eco-system. { FOODS AND NUTRITION FOOD EXHIBITS - 4 entries max. (applies to all grade levels) 1. Recipe card is required for all food exhibits. 2. Exhibitors should be prepared to discuss with the judge, references and information sources, nutritional values, methods, menu, costs, etc., as appropriate to that exhibit. 3. The exhibit may be a poster, mobile, three-dimensional display, scrapbook, balance beam, charts, journals, pictures, slides, equipment, supplies, photographs, puppet play, skit, judging comparison, taped interview, file of ideas, research study, etc. 4. Pictures, food models, plaster, plastic, papier-mâché, etc., are preferable to perishable foods in an educational exhibit. Perishable foods should be used only if they add to or help explain the educational exhibit. If perishable food is a part of the exhibit, the food is to be brought just for judging. 5. For potential State Fair exhibits containing perishable foods, you need to take a photograph of the exhibit prior to the county fair and attach to the exhibit. This photograph and a 3x5 note card listing nutrition and the recipe will be displayed at the exhibit instead of the food. Should you receive a trip to the State Fair with the item, you will need the photograph for your State Fair display. (that are eligible for State Fair) 1. One serving of a nutritious food (vegetable or fruit dish, snack, bread, dairy, etc.). You may include an 8 1/2x11 poster showing nutritional value and a photo of the food. A recipe is required. 2. Study of nutrients needed for yourself or someone else, using the dietary guidelines and MyPlate. 3. Make a food or fitness plan for yourself or someone else and show how it relates to nutritional and energy needs (example - an athlete on a volleyball team, a teen who doesn't have a lot of time). 4. Adapt a recipe(s) to show healthier ingredient choices. 5. Study of how physical fitness and/or food choices are related to

Ideas not eligible for State Fair, but are eligible for awards include: three muffins, three cookies, three chocolate brownies (unfrosted), three biscuits, cake, etc. BREADS - 4 entries max. 1. Exhibits could include 1/2 loaf of quick, yeast, or bread machine breads (no prepared mixes) (not eligible for State Fair). 2. State Fair eligible exhibits include educational exhibit on nutritional value of a bread product, study of basic ingredients in quick and/or yeast breads and their purpose, comparison of different types of flour etc., independent study related to project, or one loaf of nationality bread (include 8 1/2x11 poster showing nutritional value, recipe, and photo of the bread). FOOD PRESERVATION - 4 entries max. 1. Exhibitor must be enrolled in Food and Nutrition project. 2. All recipes, procedures, and times followed must be according to current USDA and/or National Center for Home Food Preservation recommendations. No family recipes. Quantities of sugar and juice used in jams and jellies may come from recipes on commercial pectin packages, but the processing method must be USDA or National Center for Home Food Preservation approved methods and recipes. 3. All food preservation exhibits must be labeled with a 2x3 label. Label to include county, name, grade, product, style of pack, processing method (boiling water bath or pressure canner), date, processing time, date processed and source or recipe. Pressure canned items indicate dial or weighted gauge and how many pounds of pressure used. 4. Jars must be heat-tempered glass canning jars. 5. All jars must be sealed. Leave screw bands on two piece jar lids. Jellies and jams should be covered with lids. 6. Use pint jars for fruit, vegetables and fish; one-half pint jars for jams and jellies; two 1-pint jars or one quart jar for pickled products. 7. Jellies and jams must be processed in boiling water bath according to USDA and/or University of Minnesota food preservation publications available through the Extension Office. Note: Paraffin is not acceptable. 8. No artificial food coloring should be added to entries. 9. Dried foods may be stored in glass jars, self-sealing plastic bags or airtight plastic bags. The quantity of dried foods should be: fruits and vegetables - 1/2 cup or more of each, herbs - 1/4 cup of each in whole leaf form, 3 strips of meat (e.g. venison or beef jerky). 10. Do not bring jams, jellies or spreads that require refrigeration or freezer storage. 11. Exhibit item needs to have been processed within the past year. 12. Exhibitors need to bring 2 jars of their food preservation project; one for exhibiting and one the judge will open during conference judging. Members exhibiting in this project should be prepared to discuss and/or have written information to show how their exhibit applies to the home, how and where it is used or displayed, and all details of how it was made or selected. They should know about the subject matter of the specific exhibit, the materials used, how and why it was done, costs involved, and alternatives considered. 2. A photograph and report showing its place in the home environment must accompany exhibits that are items for the home. 3. Pictures and wall hangings that are exhibited should be finished and ready to hang. 4. Purchased kits are allowed to be used. 1. Finished or refinished wood item, or reupholstered furniture. 2. Repaired, restored or remodeled item for the home. 3. Chart and/or plan for the care and maintenance of the inside or outside of the home including daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly jobs. 4. An article remade or reclaimed for the home with a link to the past, including history of use. 5. Description, diagrams/photos, samples and cost of a redecorating or remodeling plan showing before and after. { HORTICULTURE FLOWER GARDENING - 4 entries max. 1. Label each container according to kind or variety. 2. Outdoor living flowers and plants are to be exhibited in this area. 3. Live plant material will be accepted if it can be maintained in a fresh condition with ease. 1. When exhibiting cut flowers, we suggest: a. three stems of one variety of annual flower, or b. one stem of a hardy perennial, or c. one stem of summer flowering bulbs, or d. one blossom of a tea rose, or e. one stem of a hardy shrub rose. 2. Flower bouquet or arrangement on any theme. 3. Display of dried flowers with a card explaining the drying method. 4. My Flower Garden - exhibit on poster board, not to exceed 22x28". If displaying a fruit sample, exhibitor should bring 6 items of one variety of fruit and include a 3x5 index card listing the variety of fruit, name and club of exhibitor. 1. Display showing a comparison of several varieties of the same fruit (labeled); display using a branch to illustrate proper pruning of fruit trees and explaining the process; illustrate the many uses of fruits (fresh, jams, juices, cooking, baking, salads and recipes); illustrate the use of fruits as natural dyes.

Indoor living flowers and plants are to be exhibited in this area. POTTED PLANTS: 1. Flowering plants should be in bloom. 2. Foliage plants should be in vigorous condition. 3. Plants should be grown in the exhibited container for at least one month prior to fair. PLANTS IN HANGING CONTAINERS: 1. Container for the plant should not be more than 10" in depth or diameter. 2. Maximum total length of hanger and plant should not exceed 4'. 3. Evaluation will include appropriateness of plant for a hanging container, condition, arrangement, hanger to container to plant relationship, and plants being well established. TERRARIUMS: 1. The terrarium may not exceed 24" in any dimension. 2. Terrarium should be planted four to six weeks ahead of exhibiting. 3. Members must be able to identify all plant materials in their terrariums, know why they were selected for use (quality, container and design). 1.
