The International Respiratory Congress will be held in San Antonio, Dec Thousands of respiratory therapists and others interested in pulmonary care, critical care, transport and other cardiorespiratory disciplines will be attending the International Respiratory Care Congress, an annual meeting with an exhibit hall featuring all of the vendors in respiratory care. Hundreds of lectures on a range of topics including critical care transport, oxygen therapy, burn treatment, rehabilitation, ventilatory support, critical care medicine, asthma, COPD, and dozens of other subjects will be available. The AARC is making the offer of complimentary registration to anyone in a health care profession in the military to thank you for the sacrifice and service you provide to our country and our wounded warriors. A focus of the meeting will be on H1N1, as the respiratory therapy profession is so closely involved with the care of those patients. DO CATS SWEAT? Summer heat can be uncomfortable for both humans and cats. So you may be wondering Do cats sweat?" How do cats deal with heat? HOW MUCH WATER DOES YOUR DOG REALLY NEED?

Next to oxygen, water is the most important nutrient in your dog's body. Dogs can go for days without food. A dog's body can lose all of its fat and up to half of its protein and still survive.

2 DO CATS SWEAT? Summer heat can be uncomfortable for both humans and cats. So you may be wondering Do cats sweat?" How do cats deal with heat? HOW MUCH WATER DOES YOUR DOG REALLY NEED? I want to stress how vital water is to your dog's health. It is essential for life. It helps digest food, carry and absorb nutrients, flush out waste and control body temperature. Next to oxygen, water is the most important nutrient in your dog's body. Dogs can go for days without food. A dog's body can lose all of its fat and up to half of its protein and still survive. But when a dog loses just 10 percent of his body's water, bodily functions shut down causing serious illness. A 15 percent loss of water will kill him. So how much water does your dog need? It depends on his stress level, how active he is, his size, his age, his health and the kind of food he eats. Even the weather can be a factor. There is no steadfast rule. In general, animals should take in two and a half times more water than food. Another useful guideline for dogs weighing 20 pounds or less is that they need about 1 cup (8 ounces) of water for every 5 pounds of body weight. So, a healthy 15-pound dog would need 3 cups of water a day. Dogs don't have to DRINK their daily fill of water. They also get water from the food they eat. Wet food has a lot more water than kibbles or dry food. Snacks like apples are also a great source of water. When fresh and clean water is available a dog will generally drink all he needs to survive. The fresher the water, the more appealing it will be to your dog. Make sure your dog's bowl is clean. If you wouldn't drink from it, chances are he won't want to drink from it either. You need to wash your dog's water bowl every day and disinfect it regularly to control bacteria. The better the water tastes, the more likely your dog is to drink it. Dogs also prefer cool water. That's why a pet fountain is a great way to help your dog drink more. It filters the impurities so the water tastes better, and the constant motion keeps the water cool, just the way your dog likes it. Drink up!!!!! To answer the question, yes cats can sweat on the pads of their feet. You may have noticed that your cat leaves moist paw prints on the table at your veterinarian's office. How else do cats dissipate heat? Well, they can also pant like dogs when they get too hot, but this behavior is much less common in cats. They will also sprawl out to maximize their surface area since curling up retains body heat. They will seek cool places and cool surfaces to lie on. Also, cats don't usually work hard to exert themselves. Make sure that your cat always has a cool place to go and rest. It is also important to provide plenty of fresh clean water at all times. One way to do this is to top off your cat's water bowl or to add ice to the water throughout the day. You can also provide fresh bowls of water throughout the day or provide a pet fountain. Unique Collaboration Pairs Law Student Veterans and Volunteer Attorneys The University of Texas School of Law Texas Law Veterans Association (TLVA), with support from The William Wayne Justice Center for Public Interest Law, and Volunteer Legal Services of Central Texas (VLS) will offer a free legal clinic for low-income veterans and service members Friday, October 2, from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm, at the Travis County Veteran s Office, 100 N. IH35, #2400. Veterans seeking advice should sign in between 9:00 and 10:30 am. Volunteer attorneys recruited by VLS will provide free legal advice on civil matters to low-income Active Duty Service Members, National Guard Reservists, Veterans, and their immediate families. Attendees will be seen on a walk-in basis and can expect to spend about fifteen minutes receiving advice from an attorney. Typical advice ranges from military benefits to general housing, family law, and consumer issues. However, there is no advice about criminal cases. Law students will assist veterans in completing intake paperwork and clarifying the legal issue for which veterans need advice. Cases not resolved at the clinic will be reviewed to see if further legal services can be provided at no charge.
