MY NEWFOUNDLAND MY LOVE I fell in love with a Newfoundland Right from the very start. When it looked into my eyes, I quickly lost my heart. A breed of highest courage, A rescue dog of old. Intelligent and devoted, With a heart of purest gold. Sprawled beside my chair at night, Or sharing play outside- I can't imagine life without My Newfoundland by my side. Happy Valentines Day!

3 February, 2010 Page 3 WDC Corner By Alex Hoops The NCNC WDC had a very productive Annual Planning Meeting at the beginning of January, during which we discussed our events for the upcoming year. A brief summary of the activities planned for 2010 is presented below, and the complete minutes from the WDC Annual Planning Meeting will be available on Keeping with tradition, we will be offering a series of carting seminars this year leading up to our Spring Draft Test on March 21 in Gilroy. The next seminar will take place on February 13 in Antioch, and I encourage everyone who is interested in carting work to participate. Instructions are geared towards all skill levels, from the complete novice (whether dog, handler, or both!) to those who are preparing to enter a draft test. Check the web site for registration forms and additional information. The final carting seminar prior to the draft test will be on March 13 in Gilroy. Additionally, at both of these events, we will be offering Specialty Carting Tests for those seminar participants who would like to test their skills at this beginner-level carting event. This year, the NCNC WDC is intending to hold a fun working event in conjunction with the club picnic. Currently, we are planning a themed rolling rally event similar to the Super Draft Dog Competition from the 2009 Spring Draft Test. Stay tuned for more details as the picnic draws closer! Looking ahead to water work, NCNC will kick-off water training season with our annual seminars on June 5 & 6 in Lincoln. As a change this year, NCNC will be holding four water tests this summer: the Early Water Test will now be two one-day tests on July 31 and August 1 in Lincoln, and we will once again offer two one-day tests at Del Valle on September 11 & 12. We are also planning to hold one WRDX test this year. Throughout the year, NCNC will also be participating in a number of community events, from the Kaiser Teddy Bear Clinic to parades in Walnut Creek and Pleasanton. These events are excellent opportunities for us to interact with the public and educate them about our breed, and are also extremely rewarding for our dogs who adore all the attention! As usual, updated information on all of our working dog events can be found in this column, on the NCNC web site, and any further questions can be directed to the event chair or me. Happy training! Check out ncnc.org for the Spring Draft Test premium! 6 Page 6 NewfsPaper Someday (when, you can't be sure), you will knock on heaven's door. Then how small or great your sin, you'll take a quiz to be let in. So now before this life is through, here's a test. See how you'll do! Did you spend time with a scoop, searching for each piece of poop? Did every single thing you wear, match or contrast with doggie hair? Buff or chocolate, red or blue, to give the judge a better view? Did you stay up all hours to help, Your own or some friend's bitch in whelp? While on earth was it your fate, to witness many a "doggie date"? Charter, aka Beach Beach was Briny's singleton puppy that came to be a littermate to Sadie, Sophie and Meg. He was so fat from all the milk Briny had, that he looked like a beached whale, hence the name, "Beach." Jezzie accepted him as one of her own immediately, and Briny never looked back. He will always have a special place in my heart. -Pam Was the only thing you drove for ages, was chosen to hold the most cages? Did you keep liver everywhere? Right in your mouth! You did not care? When you met good friends face to face, did they just ask you "how'd you place"? Have you stood in heat and rain? Endured every ache and every pain? Drunk coffee cold and soda hot, and sat on many a porta-pot? Did you face this kind of thing, for just a minute in the ring? Did all you own have dog hair in it? Yet, you would never trade a minute, with those who gave you selfless love. Have you answered "yes" to all the above? Then...They'll let you in heaven without hesitating. Expect to be welcomed... your dogs are waiting. Maryellen Nichols Baltimore, MD Capriccio's Allegro CD (Ali), loved and owned by Steve Graham and last of the Blossom babies has crossed Rainbow Bridge. March 3, January 12, I don't know if 1/12/10 is the actual date, but it's the date I received the news. Pam

7 February, 2010 Page 7 Massive Veterinary Drug Recall Getting Bigger (Dec. 09) Ketamine hydrochloride injection is an anesthetic agent for diagnostic and surgical procedures. Ketamine hydrochloride made by TEVA Animal Health was voluntarily recalled on 12/22/09, but that recall was suddenly expanded on 12/31/09 after it was discovered that 7 other companies were selling Ketamine Hydrochloride manufactured by TEVA under their own labels. Due to the long holiday weekend your Vet may not know about the sudden expansion of the recall. If your pet is undergoing surgery next week, you should ask what drugs will be used to sedate your pet. If your Vet is using Ketamine hydrochloride you should probably refer to this recall. Below I have included links to the articles that explain the different phases of this product recall During the summer the FDA sued TEVA Animal health, the largest manufacturer of generic animad drugs after agency inspections found adulterated animal drugs. Details here: FDA goes after largest manufacturer of generic animal drugs On 12/22/09 the FDA issued this Press Release Teva Animal Health, Inc. expands a voluntary nationwide recall of Ketamine Hydrochloride Injection, USP CIII 100mg/mL in 10mL vials. Details were sketchy, but the VIN News Service gives a lot of background information in their article Expanded ketamine recall leaves veterinarians with unanswered questions On 12/31/09, the VIN News reported that Teva manufactured Ketamine for other companies in their article Seven labels tied to Teva ketamine recall, FDA says The FDA s Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) confirms that the labels include: * AmTech Group Inc. Ketamine Hydrochloride Injection, USP, manufactured by IVX Animal Health Inc., St. Joseph, Mo. * Butler KetaThesia, distributed exclusively by Butler Animal Health Supply, Dublin, Ohio * Fort Dodge Ketaset, manufactured for Fort Dodge Animal Health, Fort Dodge, Iowa * VEDCO KetaVed, distributed by Vedco Inc., St. Joseph, Mo. * Phoenix Ketaject, manufactured for Phoenix Pharmaceutical Inc., St. Joseph, Mo. * LLOYD Laboratories VetaKet, manufactured for Lloyd Laboratories in Shenandoah, Iowa * RXV Keta-Sthetic, manufactured for RXVeterinary Products, Westlake, Texas Deadly Flu Warning For Dogs (Dec. 09) We just received this warning about a flu that could be deadly to dogs. I wanted to let you know that a dog I was fostering through the NorCal Ridgeback rescue has come down with a very serious case of what we think is the Canine Influenza. The illness has now progressed to Pneumonia and she might not make it. I took her to Joaquin Miller Dog Park (Oakland hills) on two separate occasions: Friday 12/11 and Saturday 12/12. The canine influenza can be VERY contagious and I know several other parks up North that have closed down to prevent spreading the virus. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me or Elizabeth Akers (Ygnacio Animal Hospital & Northern California Ridgeback Rescue). Thank you!
