3 December, 2010 Page 3 Dog Food Samples Needed for UC Davis Research By Jen Larsen We are doing a study to look at the fiber content of commercial dog foods. Fiber is an important nutrient for health and disease. However, the 'crude fiber' listed on pet food labels is a value derived from a laboratory method that does not measure any soluble fiber, and only part of the insoluble fiber. Since some ingredients commonly used in pet food contribute significant amounts of soluble fiber, this is not a accurate or useful way to measure the true fiber content of dog foods. We plan to use laboratory methods to determine the true amounts of insoluble and soluble fiber in canned and dry dog foods. Potentially this data will encourage regulatory changes in how fiber content is reported, so that pet owners and veterinarians can make informed decisions about food choices. If you are interested in helping, we are looking for donations of both kibble and canned dog foods. ***We need about 2 cups of kibble in a ziploc bag (with the original food label/bag/package) or 2 large cans of canned food.*** Foods we CAN use are: complete/balanced diets for puppies, adults, seniors, performance, etc. Foods we CAN'T use are: veterinary/prescription diets, or diets with 'inulin' or 'fructooligosaccharides' on the ingredient list (these aren t measured by our lab tests) I can pick up the samples at the NCNC holiday party on December 11. Feel free to send your donation with a friend if you cant make it. You can also mail me the food, but unfortunately I cannot cover shipping costs. Thank you for your interest and support! 5 December, 2010 Page 5 In Remembrance of Risa VN Ch Pouch Cove Southwind Sonrisa CD, DD, WRD February 4, 2001 November 10, 2010 Sonrisa in Spanish means smile, a name she certainly lived up to. She made me smile everyday, you just couldn t help it. Those of you who knew her, know what I m talking about. She exuded joie de vivre. From puppy hood she loved to carry her leash in her mouth. The minute you put it on, she would snatch it up in her mouth and literally prance wherever it was she was going. Jenni had a heck of a time trying to get her to let go at the National in her puppy classes, which she won; I think Jenni finally gave up. She loved to go places, any place, and was always there at the back of the van, asking to be loaded up. Following in Blossom and Jezzie s paw prints, she became my sidekick, traveling everywhere with me, even it was just to hang out with Auntie Joyce. Just getting in the van made her happy, and if you brought the water equipment out, she was ecstatic. She was the epitome of everything you read about the noble Newf. To me, she was perfect. She was beautiful, with that glorious coat she inherited from her sire, tree trunk bone and lovely, soft expression. She loved the show ring, and was never happier than when escorted by her favorite han- dler, Maria. She had courage and a heart as big as she was. I ll never forget the day she earned her WRD. The wind at Del Valle had picked up and blown her second article, the boat cushion, way beyond the last buoy. Risa, never a speedy swimmer, pursued that cushion with determination, eventually catching up to it and swimming all the way back. I don t know how far she had to swim, but it seemed like it was halfway across the lake and back. At that point I didn t care if she completed the rest of the exercises, I was so proud of her, but she did. She was intelligent but also silly, I never knew what she would come up with. Last year when we attempted to re-qualify for WD, exercises she was solid on, she went straight out for her dropped retrieve article, and when almost there, abruptly turned around, swimming back to shore. What none of us saw was a stick floating directly in front of the article. Risa returned to me, happily carrying the stick in her mouth, and then went on to complete the rest of the exercises flawlessly. How could I be mad? When she and Arthur were teamed for a draft test at PNNC, I left them for the recall in Basic Control, but when I turned around, there was Risa in a stand. If she hadn t been tethered to Arthur, there s no doubt in my mind she would have followed me. They then went on to perform perfectly in the maneuvering course. These are but a sample of the endearing things that are precious memories. Risa was kind and gentle with a temperament that truly exemplified what is meant in the breed standard. She loved everyone, and I think everyone who met her, felt the same. She never met a stranger. She got along with any dog she met; it didn t matter if it was a boisterous puppy, or an alpha bitch. She took it all in stride. As imposing as she was, my cats never were afraid of her. She happily pulled carts of children at many Teddy Bear picnics, and sat on the bench or by the information table at Golden Gate. I never did therapy work with her, but she would have made a wonderful therapy dog. Risa had been battling a failing liver (exposure to Lepto and copper toxicity), and later, atrial and ventricular arrythmia. I count my self fortunate to have been able to spend a little more than a month longer, than I thought I would have with her. The journey began at the end of June, but I would have lost her in early October without the help of many people. My thanks to all who helped in this effort: Dr. Helen Hamilton, Dr. Rick Kienle, Dr. Hilary Wheeler, Dr. Jenifer Larsen, John and Gina Bonnell and Joyce Taylor. Liver tissue has been sent to the U of Missouri and two experts in the field, thanks to Dr. Hamilton. Hopefully their research will give us some answers. Last Tuesday night she let me know she couldn t fight any longer, those of you who have been through it, know the look in their eyes. Joyce went with me, and I did what I had to do for my best friend, as a last act of love. -Pam Rubio

6 Page 6 NewfsPaper NCNC Fall Draft Test - 11/7/2010 By Cherrie Brown NCNC carting enthusiasts returned to Lagoon Valley once again for our 2010 fall draft test. In spite of the high pass rate at our spring draft test, we had a nearly full entry of 14 at the close of entries for the fall test. Three of these withdrew before the start of judging leaving 11 entries for our Oregon judges Pam Saunders and Shauna Bryant. Although the weather was decidedly inclement, everyone was in good spirits and the dogs were ready to work, as demonstrated by the perfect pass rate in basic control. The first five dogs to compete passed all the exercises and earned their Draft Dog (DD) titles. The remaining entries competing for new titles, including our only team entry, failed one or more exercises indicating the need for just a little more experience. Our celebratory mood was restored, however, as the last two entries to test requalified nicely. Harnessing and hitching proved to be the challenging exercise for most of those who failed. The maneuvering course utilized the natural obstacles provided by the site, including picnic tables, pine trees and rocks. Most of the entries handled the various challenges nicely. The freight haul began by crossing a fairly narrow foot bridge and then proceeded up a steep, rutted path made slick by the rain. The handlers wisely steered their dogs to the safer side of the path so there were no incidents. The route then went down a long, gradual hill on a paved path to the infamous garden where the path was lined by rocks and wove through a refreshing redwood grove before returning up the hill and back to the start. Many a cart has been flipped by those rocks in the past. This freight haul route is not just a walk in the park! During the freight haul, Rudy and Lex thought it was the Breeders Cup and got into a race. Fortunately Dana was able to keep Lex under sufficient control not to flip a cart or pass the lead stewards. Our draft test Chair Laura Gallagher led a committee consisting of Cherrie Brown (secretary) and Pam Rubio (sponsor). Laura also provided the pretest dinner at her home Saturday night and assisted June Gibson and Dawn Druge with morning and judges hospitality, respectively. Laura Gallagher and Pam Jackson provided the hot chili which hit the spot for lunch. Pam Jackson also provided her motor home as a comfort station. Kevin Gallagher was site coordinator and grounds person. Patti Sondgroth prepared the judges gifts, while trophies and participants gifts were prepared by June Gibson. Todd Bridge was our test photographer. Last but not least, John Pearson was the chief steward who led a crew consisting of Lynne Baker, Monica Brennan, Debbie Bridge, Dawn Druge, Kevin Gallagher, Rick Humphreys, Jennifer Larsen, Lori Littleford, Pam Rubio, Amy Ryan and Emma Taylor. THANK YOU to everyone who helped make this test a rousing success. Congratulations to the following New Draft Dogs! Chex, Tedi, and I participate in "Paws to Read", a read to the dogs program at Castro Valley Library. For our November session, the leader and I decided to give a little extra - I decorated the cart and got some mini pumpkins. About 20 minutes into each of the 30 minute sessions (2 of them), Chex pulled his cart in from outside. Each child could pick their own pumpkin. After we had gone around the room, we talked a little about what Newfoundlands can do. Hazel Jacoby
