1 May MAY 2011 It Truly Takes a Village NCNC s 2011 Spring Draft Test was a day I will not soon forget. One of the largest reasons for that is due to the immense example of huge hearted NCNC members who volunteered for the many different positions to put on a successful test. These very special people worked truly from sun up until sunset to ensure each entrant had the best possible chance to pass the test. Why did these people volunteer? I observed throughout the day and enjoyed seeing and taking part in the friendship, laughter, love of the breed, sharing, and the most of all, the genuine support. Thanks to each of you; from the Draft Test Committee, Stewards, and NCNC members who simply came out to show their support. I would like to congratulate the handlers and the 5 of 15 entrants who passed this very challenging test. Congratulations to June Gibson who successfully passed with both of her individually entered dogs, Ch Kevaura s Return to Sender, aka Rudy, and Ch Karableus Coming on Strong WD, aka Trace; Gaby Cohen with her team, WA VN SaltyDog s Leapin Lizards CDX RE WRD(3) TDD, aka Lizzie, and Ch SaltyDog s Devon WD DD, aka Devon; Amy Ryan with Soda Creek s Why Not, aka Chloe; and last but certainly not least, Catherine Lamoureux with Capriccio s Earth Angel, aka Angel. And to the rest of us, yes that includes me (darn Chihuahua!), I wish each of us a successful test in November. I know we can do it; we were all so very close! Having lived with several Newfoundlands over the years, I thought it would be a good idea to help protect and support this wonderful breed by volunteering with Newfoundland Rescue. My first assignment was to provide temporary shelter for an 11- month-old male, Gibby. He was a wonderful houseguest, passed all tests and was ready for his forever home. A family came to meet him, brought along their two dogs and everyone seemed to get along. It was a good match. My husband and I felt we had done the right thing and were ready to return to our quiet life with our two companion dogs and the cat. However, we felt an emptiness when Gibby left. After only two days, we received a phone call from the forever family. Things were not working out. There were some aggression issues and they needed to return him, immediately. He arrived back to us before 7:00 the next morning. We were thrilled and they were happy to relinquish him. Now we needed to explore the issues. We exposed him to many different situations. He was great with other dogs. We took him to dog school. He learned quickly and soon became a star in the class. The one issue we weren t prepared for is that he doesn t like to be left at home alone (even with the girls-see picture). A newf can do some damage! So he had the privilege of going to work with my husband. Days, weeks, months went by. There was no suitable home for Gibby. Finally after three months we decided we couldn t let him go. He found his forever home. We were a happy family, however the cat didn t agree. She hid behind the couch with Gibby watching and waiting for her to emerge. Finally after four months, she took the chance. And of course Gibby did nothing except give her a lick. Gibby makes us smile and laugh on a daily basis. John rides horses in the hills above Pacifica and Gibby loves to come along. He is an amazing athlete; strong, fast, with amazing endurance. He comes home and continues to play with his girls. He still doesn t like to be left alone, but he is doing better. We can trust him for a few minutes at a time and he does crate nicely. He has become a muchloved member of our family and we couldn t imagine life without him. It doesn t look like we will be fostering anytime soon. ~ Diane Garfield and John Carlson Page 4 THE NEWFSPAPER

5 Working Dog NCNC s first working event of the year was a physically and mentally challenging one. For those who missed out on the fun, the draft test was held April 3rd at Garin Park in Hayward. We had a completely full test of 15 entries made up of lovely black dogs, one brown dog and a BEAUTI- FUL TEAM of Landseers! Please thank Linda Maggy who was test chair for all of her hard work, many thanks also goes to Laura and Kevin Gallagher, Merle Maggy, Cherrie Brown, Walt Parsons and all the stewards and volunteers. Thanks also to the park ranger who stayed late for our test. (see test results elsewhere in the paper and website) NCNC s next event will be the water seminar on June 4th & 5th being held at Martin/ Gaby Pond in Lincoln. Please see the NewfsPaper and website for more details, contact Gaby Cohen (event chair) for questions. Taking, holding and carrying are very important to water training and in order to make everyone s experience more productive at this year s water seminar we hope that all beginner dogs will already have those commands in their vocabulary. Water practice will be starting soon, please contact Rick Humphreys for practice at Del Valle Livermore on Thursday afternoons and Sunday mornings. Contact either Laura Gallagher or Gaby Cohen for practice at the Lincoln pond on Tuesday afternoons and Saturday mornings. See you all at the next Newf event ~ Dana Kuo How to bathe your cat Thoroughly clean your toilet. 2. Lift both lids and add shampoo. 3. Find and soothe your cat as you carry it to the bathroom. 4. In one swift move, place your cat in the toilet, close both lids, and stand on top so the cat cannot escape. 5. The cat will self agitate and produce ample suds. Ignore the ruckus from inside the toilet. The cat is enjoying this. 6. Flush the toilet 3 or 4 times. This provides the power rinse, which is quite effective. The cat is too big to go anywhere. 7. Have someone open the outside door, stand as far from the toilet as possible, and quickly lift both lids. 8. The clean cat will rocket out of the toilet and outdoors, where he will air dry. Cat will return when he gets hungry. Sincerely, The Dog The Dangers of Snail Bait We had a terrible scare with Sophie, a border terrier, on Saturday night. She's ok now, and I wanted to share our story so that this doesn't happen to any other pets!! She managed to eat snail bait, which we found out can be fatal for pets if not treated quickly. Luckily we noticed that she was twitching/ hyper and rushed her to the animal ER. She spent the night in critical care, and we were allowed to bring her home Sunday afternoon. We have to monitor her for a week as some dogs suffer from liver failure afterwards. But we went to our regular vet this morning and her liver blood work came back normal. woo! So please, please don't buy/use snail bait. The ER vet told us that the bait companies have doubled the amount of toxins in the last year, so the # of pet fatalities is increasing. And there is no anti-dote, they just use charcoal/enemas/induce vomiting to get it out of the animals system. We think we got her to the ER about 30 minutes after she ingested it. Online info says they can die within 4 hours of ingestion and that the amount consumed/time elapsed is the major difference between life or death. Tell your pet-owning friends too. Lots of people use that stuff this time of year for gardening - so warn them before they have an accident. ~Re-Posted with Permission Page 5 THE NEWFSPAPER

9 Spring Draft Test - April 3, Garin Park, Hayward, CA We had a very full entry for this test with 10 individual and 5 team entries. Following weeks of cold, wet weather, the beautiful spring sunshine brought out hordes of picnickers to Garin Park in Hayward, making for a very challenging test environment. Our judges were Kathy Mitchell from Southern California and Sue Marino from New England with our own Gina Bonnell as an observer judge. The large entry and the fact that the judges went over every nuance and personal pet peeve for each entry during harnessing and hitching made for a very long day. Basic control went well for the most part except for one entry taking a puppy moment to race around the ring to test the agility of several stewards and another zoning out on the recall. Harnessing and hitching took the lion s share of the day, and yet only two entries failed to pass the judges muster on this exercise. All handlers were given loads of pointers on their equipment. The freight haul route went around the field before taking the path to the pond. There it led up a steep bank and back toward the start. It crossed a foot bridge, and passed through the parking lot before circling the flagpole and descending back to the starting point and the finish. In addition to the official intriguing distraction (Mike and Ursula Reyer playing catch accompanied by loud critiques of each other s throwing style) there were picnickers, guitar players, soccer games, horses, and attack Chihuahuas. It was the last that caused at least one entry to fail. Test chair Linda Maggy was assisted by secretary Walt Parsons and third committee member Lynne Baker. Linda was also site coordinator, arranged the pre-test dinner, judges hospitality and assisted Pam Rubio with lunch. Lynne Baker was responsible for morning hospitality, having to scramble after her car was broken into the night before. Grounds and equipment were the responsibility of Kevin and Laura Gallagher. Trophies were provided by Gina Bonnell. Judges and participants gifts were prepared by Laura Gallagher and June Gibson. Donna Humphreys presented a nice raffle and Merle Maggy was the official photographer. This was my first effort as chief steward. I was very gratified by the number of people who volunteered to steward and by those who stepped in at the end when some of the stewards had to leave due to the longer than anticipated day. Thanks are due to Jen Allen, John Bonnell, John and Monica Brennan, Colleen Cahill, Roger Duke, Kevin and Laura Gallagher, Bari Halperin, Rick Humphreys, Bill and Susan Liley, Bill Masters, John Morozumi, John Pearson, Mike and Ursula Reyer, Pat Roy, Pam Rubio, Emma Taylor and Amelia Wheaton quite a list. At the end of the day we had 4 new individual draft dogs and one new team. Congratulations to these handlers. Most of the failing entries missed only a single exercise and are sure to pass on their next tries. The names of those passing are listed below. ~ Cherrie Brown Merle Maggy has uploaded over 300 photos to his pbase site, These photos resolution is half size of original and jpeg quality is medium and are suitable for prints up to 5 x 7 inches. If anyone wants higher quality files, contact him with the photo file number and he will forward them to you.
